ATWO-PART package tour of some two dozenjazzmen will hit Britain this autumn.

Under the banner of " Newport Jazz Festival," the show is divided intotwo parts.

The first, consisting of modern and mainstream jazz,opens at the Royal Festival Hall on Saturday, Septem-ber 19. It comprises the Dave Brubeck Quintet, the DizzyGillespie Quintet, and the Buck Clayton All -Stars.

Britain's Vic Ash Quintet will also star with theseAmerican jazzmen throughout their 16 -day tour.

Two more concerts take place the following day (Sunday)at the Gaumont State, Kilburn. Also scheduled are dates atthe Guildhall, Portsmouth (September 21) and the St. George's

THIS year's Beaulieu Jazz Festival smashed allrecords. Besides the record attendance of 12,000,

millions watched the 40 -minute telecast by BBC orheard the two Light Programme broadcasts.

"It has been a really wonderful week -end," organisingsecretary Peter Burman told the MM. " The BBCcoverage was a tremendous boost and one that willencourage us to make the Festival even bigger nextyear."

'Very satisfactory'Peter Bale, who produced the TV excerpt, said: " I like to

get jazz away from the studio. And Beaulieu made avery satisfactory broadcast."

Ronnie Ross, the bari-tone saxophonist who,ironically, has never yetwon a British critics' poll,was voted to first place asthe best new baritone manof the year, ahead of suchestablished A4nericanfavourites as PepperAdams and Sahib Shihab.

Two of the three topclarinet spots went toforeign musicians, withRolf Kuhn running secondto winner Bob Wilber andputte Wickman in thirdplace.

Other results included avictory by Duke Ellingtonover Count Basie, who hasdefeated Duke so often inrecent years. Kenton was apoor third with only sixpoints to Count's 44 andDuke's 63. Chet told me he intendedstaying in Europe for some con-siderable time. He plans totour Italy and then Germany.

After that, he will visit theBelgian Congo and the Sudanwith his own combo, now in theprocess of formation.

Chet tells me he will mostlikely take a Dutoh bass player,a German drummer and prob-ably Al Haig, an Americanpianist.

At the Blue Note he is playingwith Jimmy Goulet (guitar),Pierre Michelet (bass), KennyClarke (drums) and. RennyUdringer on piano.

broke off her holiday to sing atan all-Gershwin concert at theInternational Sporting Club lastFriday. The concert was in aidof the Monaco Red Cross and theconcert was attended by Princeand Princess Ranier.

True, the band's soloists didnot tickle critical ears to thesame effect. It was observedthat they needed to spend sometime in the States to acquirethat "edge " which identifiesthe best.

Indeed, Oscar Goodstein-host to the band at Birdland-regretted that it was only aone-night stand.

Goodstein gave the Dank -worth boys the honoured -guesttreatment. They were given awarm welcome at Newport bymusicians and jazz writersalike.

TheloniusI didn't get to hear much

music there," says Johnny ruefully.

"Of those I heard, TheloniusMonk impressed me the most.Before that, his records left mefeeling that I had missed thepoint somewhere. But hiswork at Newport was full ofmelodic invention. I shouldsay he is truly one of the greatinnovators of jazz."

The rest of the tour waseventful. In New York, Arm-strong-defying doctor's orders-borrowed Stan Palmer'strumpet to blow a set. In theBirdland audience listening toDankworth were the BasieBand, Philly Joe Jones. Ellaand Erroll Garner.

In New Jersey, when the regular drummer was delayed, KennyClare accepted Duke's invitation to play with the Ellington Band.

There were hullos fromGeorge Shearing, Benny Good-man and ex-DankworthiteDerek Smith, now a Statesideresident.

The days after their tri-umphs, says Johnny, werespent "ligging around "-cool-ing off in George Shearing'sswimming pool, eating withMaynard Ferguson and Quin-cey Jones, breakfasting withZoot Sims. . . .

" It was great, says Johnny."And I'd like to spend somemore time in America. Butoddly enough, we were glad toget home.

" I suppose that living out ofa suitcase on tour is as weari-some in America as it is overhere."

Endless drum solos are theorder of the day, and if everynumber isn't " Perdido," everytempo is.

The manager stands by thedoor, staring malevolently atthe cluster of people on the side-walk who-without paying acent for the privilege-are reallyhearing the music to bettereffect than those inside.

Remembering that the Metro -pole now has a modern jazzdepartment. I mouth at him theword: "Upstairs? " He nodsand points to a staircase behindhim. I walk up behind a youngman carrying an alto case.

The upstairs clubroom is ahigh-class spot, very differentfrom the beery bar. Curtainedand soundproofed, it haswaiters, subtle lighting, a neatbandstand-even a grand piano.

SwingingAs I enter the club, Buddy

Rich, slumped over his drumkit in an attitude of watchfulrelaxation, speaks into a hand -mike. " Where the hell wereyou? " he says. " We're sup-posed to start at nine."I am just about to replytartly that I come and go asI please, when it dawns on methat the alto player beside meis making noises of apology ashe opens his instrument case.

" Ladies and gentlemen-PhilWoods," says Buddy Rich." Late, but swinging."

He is, too. He blows fine.Parkeresque alto, and BuddyRich plays sympathetic drums.

If someone would remove hisbass drum when he wasn'tlooking. Buddy Rich would be acredit to the modern move-ment.

Alternating with Rich is theMarian McPartland Trio.

Marian has a delightfullymusical approach to jazz and acharming personality on thestand, but there's still some-thing or other that comes be-tween her and complete key-board mastery.

I suppose it's a tempera-mental thing.

Marian is not quite assured asshe sits down at the keyboard;not quite monarch of all shesurveys, as she flexes her fingersand decides what to play first.

The piano is a proud inde-pendent beast. and will soonhave you fretting and frus-trated if you don't show it afirm hand.

One mustn't be unfair, ofcourse. Marian is a fine jazz-man-jazzwoman, rather-andat any tempo from medium ondown she gets full marks.

But when, after a couple offunky things and a ballad wewere clearly due for somethingup -tempo, I fancied I caught asmile of quiet triumph on theface of that piano.

I played for Billie. GjonMiii, the "Life" photo-grapher, threw a big partyat his home-a real crazything.

It was for musiciansand entertainers, mainlyfor people who'd been atCafé Society, I think.Pete Johnson and AlbertAmmons were there, andBenny Goodman, I guess.

Billie, she was very muchthere. I'd met her before,casually, but this was thefirst proper meeting. Shehad been at the old CafeSociety before I workedthere, and I never got to seeher.

The bluesAnyhow, everybody at the

party did something, and Billienaturally had to sing. Shedidn't often sing blues, but onthis occasion she sang a few,and I played guitar behind her.

It was the first I'd ever heardof her in person, though I knewsome of her records. You can

It was like a superstition toher, that flower, and sooneveryone got to know about it.She didn't have to buy them, ofcourse. Admirers would keepsending them in, and Billiewasn't short of admirers.

of Baby Dodds, Lester Young and Sidney Bechethave been followed with tragic swiftness by the departureof Billie Holiday-to my ears, an incomparable jazz singerfrom the moment she hitthe record scene in themiddle Thirties.

Billie's death wasn't unex-pected. But it was no less ashock for that.

She had been ill for a longtime and was clearly in poorshape when she visited thiscountry last February. Whenshe appeared at Lester Young'sfuneral a friend told me shewas looking " incredibly beat."

But Billie mistrusted hos-pitals and refused to go in fortreatment. Then on May 31she was brought unconscious toNew York's Metropolitan Hos-

roal-butonly after an abortive

journey to the Knickerbockerspital. which sent her on

to the Metropolitan.It seemed no one at either

place realised who she was-she

had been admitted under hermarried name of EleanoraMcKay - and Billie's doctormade the disconcerting ob-servation: " It might have hap-pened to anybody."

William Dufty, who wroteBillie's memoirs, " Lady Singsthe Blues," added that the hos-pital authorities thought it washardly playing the game for astar to " Come in like a Harlemhousewife."

After a short time in hospital,Billie appeared to improve. Buton June 12 she was arrested forpossession of heroin and for awhile was guarded day andnight by the police.

Then she was paroled intothe custody of her lawyer, DonWilkes, and the watchdogs werewithdrawn. Wilkes describedthe law's last brush with Billieas " a very, very shabby per-formance on the part of theState of New York."

Billie herself, when she wascaught smoking a week beforeher death, said: " They alreadyarrested me a month ago. What

Then Billie suffered a relapseand died at 3.10 on the morningof the 17th. She was 44.

At her funeral, a crowd of2,500 mourners attended, with500 more gathered outside.

Among the honorary pallbearers were Teddy Wilson,Mary Lou Williams, GeneKrupa, Benny Goodman, RoyEldridge, Charlie Shavers. HenryAllen, Joe Williams, JuanitaHall, Leonard Feather and JoeGlaser.

Billie was born EleanoraFagan on April 7, 1915, inBaltimore, Maryland. H e rfather, Clarence Holiday, wasthe guitarist who played withthe Henderson and Redmanbands.

Billie moved to New York asa child and got her start as asinger at the age of 14. In1934 she was heard by JohnHammond and, as a result,made two sides with Goodmanand the famous series withTeddy Wilson.

Solo artistIn '38 she sang with Basie,

and afterwards with Artie Shaw.From then she appeared as a

solo artist, but after two con-victions on narcotics chargesand nearly a year in a federalreformatory, she found it in-creasingly difficult to get regularwork.

It was largely because of theNew York police ban that shethought about coming to Europethis year for a long stay.

Billie's final concert appear-ance was at New York's PhoenixTheatre shortly before sheentered hospital.

Billie didn't depend on poweror forceful swing for hereffectiveness, but on subtlevariations of beat and melodyand a completely individualapproach to the words of thesong.

Her voice was never large.but it was one of the uniquesounds in jazz. And from thestart of her recording career tothe end she was original, in-stantly recognisable, and alwaysartistically honest.

I'll tell you about " StrangeFruit." I heard Billie's record.and it was such a powerfulthing that I felt the songshould be used and heard toopen people's eyes to somethingthat shouldn't be.

I didn't want to steal any-thing from Billie. I loved herinterpretation of the song, butI wanted to do "StrangeFruit " my way.

I explained how I felt toBillie, and I think she saw thepoint. After that, she oftencame in the Café-more oftenthan not for the late show,around 2.30 in the morning.

After hoursSometimes she was real late,

and wouldn't even come in.She'd drive down to the Village-the old Café was at 2 Sheri-dan Square - and sit outsidelistening to the car radio withher big boxer dog, Mister.

Then we would drive aroundthe after-hours spots, the keyclubs, the drinking places likeAlex's. We became the best offriends.

Billie was often accused ofbeing temperamental, hot-tempered and wild. She hadher weaknesses, also more thanher share of troubles, andfinally they wrecked her health.

But at heart Billie was a goodgirl. She had more thought forhumanity, and was more race -

conscious, than people thought.She'd had to fight all her life,and most people hate fighters,I can tell you.

That is one of the reasonsshe told so strong a story whenshe sang. It was as if she weresaying : " Goddam you, listen towhat I have to say! " And youlistened.

What of Billie as an artist?She was the queen. I don'tknow who influenced her, whereshe got that after -the -beat style.but I never heard anyone singlike that before.

Looked goodIn recent years I didn't see

much of Billie. The last time Icall to mind was San Francisco,around '54. when she was work-ing a spot out there.

You couldn't not notice Billie.She was going around in ahuge chauffeur -driven Cadillac.looking good-damned good. She

had lost a lot of voice then, bullwhen she got up and sang shestill sounded wonderful.

You know one of her recordsI'm crazy about? " No More,"made about 15 years ago. I'veadmired it for years, and theonly other record of the song Iknow is Dinah Washington's.

One and onlyBut the words don't mean the

same again, once you've heardBillie sing them. It's one ofthe hardest songs in the worldto sing, and you won't findmany trying-they're afraid ofit.

There was only one LadyDay, and even her closestimitators never sound like herin any important respect. Shewas only 44 when she died, butin that time she gave more andtook more than a whole lot ofartists could if they lived tobe 84.

ExtraFOR, to my mind, every band

played at least up to stan-dard, and occasionally above.In the Dankworth Orchestra,too, I found just that extrasense of confident relaxation Ihad expected to result fromtheir successful American tour.

The Heath boys displayed itimmediately after their firsttrip. And I'll be interested tohear the Lyttelton seven ontheir return.

And what of the organisationof this Newport in the NewForest? At least as good, saythe Dankworth boys. if notbetter than its Americancounterpart.

Why ...GRUMBLES? Of course. For

instance: Why did the BBCaccord it so little airtime (allthe facilities were there)?

Why are the disc companiesscared of on -the -spot record-ings?

Why no afternoon jam ses-sions for the scores of musicianskilling time before the eveningshow?

But most of all:... oh, why ?

WHY does the National Press(with a few notable ex-

ceptions) persist in misrepre-senting jazz events?

WHY has traditional jazzbeen muscled in upon by theludicrous loonies Lyttelton lam-basts elsewhere this week?

And are these the mainreason

WHY modern jazz still can-not successfully be mixed withtraditional in the same con-cert?

Sat. is Trad.THE latter seems to have been

accepted as a regrettablyinexplicable fact by Lord Mon-tagu. He told me on Monday:

" Next year, I think I'll makeSaturday Night TraditionalNight and leave all Sunday forthe Moderns."

Which should relieve thelatter from the presence of theformer and absolve the formerfrom the necessity of expressingtheir mistrust of the latter.

Producer Peter Bale and hisBBC team on their excellentMonday -night telecast;

ExtraFOR, to my mind, every band

played at least up to stan-dard, and occasionally above.In the Dankworth Orchestra,too, I found just that extrasense of confident relaxation Ihad expected to result fromtheir successful American tour.

The Heath boys displayed itimmediately after their firsttrip. And I'll be interested tohear the Lyttelton seven ontheir return.

And what of the organisationof this Newport in the NewForest? At least as good, saythe Dankworth boys. if notbetter than its Americancounterpart.

Why ...GRUMBLES? Of course. For

instance: Why did the BBCaccord it so little airtime (allthe facilities were there)?

Why are the disc companiesscared of on -the -spot record-ings?

Why no afternoon jam ses-sions for the scores of musicianskilling time before the eveningshow?

But most of all:... oh, why ?

WHY does the National Press(with a few notable ex-

ceptions) persist in misrepre-senting jazz events?

WHY has traditional jazzbeen muscled in upon by theludicrous loonies Lyttelton lam-basts elsewhere this week?

And are these the mainreason

WHY modern jazz still can-not successfully be mixed withtraditional in the same con-cert?

Sat. is Trad.THE latter seems to have been

accepted as a regrettablyinexplicable fact by Lord Mon-tagu. He told me on Monday:

" Next year, I think I'll makeSaturday Night TraditionalNight and leave all Sunday forthe Moderns."

Which should relieve thelatter from the presence of theformer and absolve the formerfrom the necessity of expressingtheir mistrust of the latter.

CHARLIE MINGUS is some-thing of a jazz enigma. A

superb bass player and expertcomposer, his music is so oftenmarred by over -conscious striv-ing for effect.At his best he is among themost important voices on thecurrent jazz scene. At his worsthe is a second-rate imitation ofmany of the more " advanced "classical composers of the lastfour decades.

This " Mingus Jazz Work-shop " LP has three magnificenttracks, and one so horrifyingthat, with the best will in theworld, I have yet to play It rightthrough at one sitting.

Fortunately, this monstrosity-the title piece, " The Clown-is the final track on the recordand doesn't interfere with theplaying of the other three.

It presents a certain Mr. JeanShepherd improvising a highlymoral narrative against assortedburblings from the musicians.

The other titles show theleader's talents to real advant-age. As a bass soloist, Mingus isin a class of his own. Everythinghe plays really does make senseand he has great rhythmicdrive.Trombonist Jimmy Knepper isa new name to me, and his play-

ing throughout is most im-pressive. His conception isutterly modern but he uses theslide of his instrument as it usedto be used, for slurs and glis-sandos. In addition he has apleasingly warm vibrato.

Porter, Legge and Richmondalso acquit themselves honour-ably.-Bob Dawbarn.

Coming after " The High AndMighty Hawk " and " Blue Saxo-phones," this LP speaks forHawk's continued potency.though it is not in the sameclass as the other two.Hawkins himself has less' todo this time, anal his fellowsoloists rarely offer anythingoutstanding.Moreover, the material couldhave been better-or better pre-pared, at any rate-to avoid aconsistency of mood whichmakes some parts of the recordmore suitable for background oraccompaniment purposes thanfor concentrated listening.

guitar over a smart, shufflingkind of beat, is uneventful ifsolid quartet playing for itsfirst eight minutes.

Then Hawkins lifts theInterest with a long and admir-able solo. He employs a heavytone and pronounced attack,phrasing at first in a deliberateway that fits the rhythm-and-blues character of the piece.

At his best, bassist Charlie Mingus is one of the most importantvoices on the current jazz scene. Here he is seen with the lateCharlie Parker (alto), Thelonius Monk (piano) and Roy Haynes

in the fourteenth chorus resultsin a savage squeak.

After the tenor there is anti-climax, but Bryant plays welland, after 18 minutes, the bluesriffs convincingly to a close. Theabsence of flute does this one noharm.

Hawk produces more un-expected turns of phrase in

Blues Wail,' a slow blues withshort solos and a lot of Grimes'sguitar, and the slightly fasterSoul Station."

He is fairly impassioned on thetwo non -blues tunes, but theseare largely dull. Though Kaleemcan construct phrases, his fluteblowing is often perfunctory.

Grimes plays traditional bluespatterns on his four -stringguitar with sound swing, butwithout an individual touch, sofar as I can judge. And it isleft to Bryant (apart fromHawk) to rise above the ordinaryin solos.

Though this is not the mostelegant of Hawkins, it has thestamp of quality. For a ran-dom example of his rhythmicprowess, take his conception ofa simple riff for the final chorusof " Soul Station."-Max Jones.

THERE are many jazz musi-cians who are not start-

lingly original, yet give a greatdeal of pleasure with their work.

One of the most consistent ofthese is Red Garland. He hasgreat drive, a sure touch and ahappy logic in his improvisa-tions.On this delightful EP he issupported by the superb Paul

Chambers on bass and some aptdrumming from Art Taylor-who cannot be accused here oftasteless bomb dropping.

Foggy " is taken at a brisktempo and is Garland at hisneatest-uncluttered, swingingjazz piano.

The Rodgers and Hart ballad," My Romance," gets a dreamy,thoughtful treatment withChambers playing compliment-ary lines behind the piano.

Not great jazz perhaps, but itall makes for very pleasantlistening.-Bob Dawbarn.

as a Holiday imitator, I wouldconclude from any of thesetracks that here was a girl try-ing desperately to sound likeBillie.

To a surprising degree she suc-ceeds. Often she gets close tothe curious timbre, thoughusually without the timing thatmade Billie's singing jazz.

Viewed as an imitation, thething sounds studied, well ob-served and unconvincing-like acuter, featherweight Billie. Youhave only to play a Holidayrecord to realise the world ofdifference.

Don Abney leads a neat.attractive accompaniment whichincludes solos by Wilder andCohn. The horns don't work on"Ill Wind."-Max Jones.

BERT COURTLEY is one ofthe most original of British

jazz talents. When he fails toget his message across it isusually because he has aimedhis sights too high instead oftaking the safe and familiarpath.

This EP is as good an exampleof his work as any on record.

"New Blues" is a Courtley

original taken at slow tempo.Bert takes It easy and there is ageneral air of relaxation. Bothhe and Eddie Harvey build toneat climaxes but the drumsand bass solos add little to thepiece as a whole.

The standard, " Sweet," rocksairing, with Bert getting a MilesDavis muted effect. Harvey,though no virtuoso on piano,again impresses with anauthoritative solo.

" Shake " is an Ellingtonwritten for the revue "JumpFor Joy," and thoroughlydeserving revival. Taken atmedium speed it is the mostsuccessful track of the three,with short feature spots for therhythm section and intelligenttrumpet-Bob Dawbarn.

It would be unjust to callthem Bilk or Colyer fans.From what I know of those twoestimable leaders. they welcomethese hooligans as enthusiasti-cally as a mass visitation of nitsto the head.

They are the people who turn astudent rag from harmless highspirits into a public nuisance.

They are the Chelsea ArtsBall hearties who have madethe senseless destruction of thedecorated floats a dismaltradition.

They are the " educated "morons whose exploits are re-counted in the murkier gossipcolumns, the " deb party " oafswho, through the peculiar elas-ticity of British justice, getaway annually with offences

which would land a Teddy Boyin the nearest magistrates'court in less time than it takesto knock off a policeman'shelmet.

In every field in which theyrear their ossified and repellentheads, they are a menace. Jazzfans -real jazz fans in everysphere - detest and disownthem.

When Ted Heath resolutelywithstood their onslaught, heearned the warm applause ofthe great majority of trad fanswho were patient and receptiveenough to listen to somethingunfamiliar to them.

It is an unfortunate thingthat the antics of these people-unaffectionately known injazz circles as " Ooblies " or" The Great Unwashed "-arecoming to be associated closelywith traditional jazz.

There is a growing convictionthat it takes no more than afew resolute twangs on a banjoto unleash in the subhuman

Acker Bilk. . . he hates them

bosom all the most swinishemotions.Unhappily, the unrulyminority -for minority it is. anda small one at that -can havea major effect on the jazz scene.

They have converted theannual Floating Festival of Jazzinto a floating purgatory formost intelligent jazz enthu-siasts.

As a result of their van-dalism, they have roused thatnormally subdued body, theAlbert Hall seat -holders, to putthe block on the all-night Car-nival of Jazz at the Albert Hall.

And their performance thisyear at Beaulieu must at leasthave sown seeds of doubt as tothe practicality of holding jazzfunctions in pleasant and ex-pensive surroundings.

All along the line, jazz suffers.

the chief of the local constabu-lary. whom I spoke to atBeaulieu.

Pointing to the thousand orso intent fans sitting and stand-ing round the Johnny Dank -worth Orchestra, he said" These are jazz fans, aren'tthey? Then why should wehave anything against jazzfans?"

There can be few better Quali-fied than Mr. Sharpe to compilea book of this nature. His de-tailed and authoritative historyof the Spanish guitar, its makers,composers and players, will makefascinating reading for allaficionados.

Mr. Sharpe emphasises thatthis is a book about the " legiti-mate "-gut or nylon strung -Spanish guitar. So it is perhapsunderstandable that he hasomitted detailed reference tosuch artists as Eddie Lang -pioneer of the plectrum guitar -Django Reinhardt and Oscar

Aleman, to name but a few whocaptured the interest of the jazzfraternity.

But a guitar enthusiast suchas Mr. Sharpe can hardly behappy at their omission from abook on " the guitar "-eventhough he is on sound technicalground.

Perhaps on some future occa-sion he will oblige with a follow-up volume on the great jazzguitarists who have emergedover a period of some 30 years.

Only then will the story of theguitar be really complete. -Laurie Renshaw.

" They then receive part of asong's royalties. And, owing totheir influential position in themusic business, they can in-fluence a song's progress intopossible Hit Parade status.

" Although as executives theyare paid good salaries to promotesongs.

" The PRS is to be congratu-lated on a bold endeavour tostamp out a racket that is fastbecoming harmful to the musicworld."Many of the " hard core " of

pop songwriters among the PRSmembership are known to be op-posed to the PRS's new ruling.

Says Jack Fishman, writer ofscores of songs and the musicfor over 30 major films: " It isan arbitrary decision. The PRSshould have taken a referendumamong its 3,000 -odd members. Itis a well-meaning intention, butwrong in the way it has beenbrought into play.

" People use pseudonyms tosuit different types of works. Imay do a gor-blimey ' type ofsong-and not wish to have myname associated with it."

Norrie Paramor, A&R man ofColumbia Records, says:

" Song rackets? I have neverbought myself into a song. Andwhy shouldn't writers use pseu-donyms? There is a big preju-dice against British songmaterial. A pseudonym attachedto a song may enable it to getmarketed."

record price war. This is the sum being spent on a two-week campaign on ATV to launch Pye's new Golden Guinea "Series of 12 in. LPs.

This follows the recent issueby the rival Top Rank label of" King Size " 45s, featuringnearly double the playing timeof the normal single.

famed Copacabana has triggered off a big offer from NBC-TV. The bid takes the form of a regular series of live appear-ances on the network that would extend over several years.Each show would run for 90 minutes and be transmitted incolour.
