For emerging independent researchers Guidelines for 2019 Funding Background As a result of a generous donations and bequests to the University of Melbourne, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is able to offer a limited number of fellowships to talented researchers. Faculty Trust Fellowships are highly prestigious awards. They have fostered the careers of many successful researchers and are a critical mechanism to enable the Faculty to provide transitional support for emerging independent researchers. Aims & Eligibility Fellowships are awarded primarily on the basis of merit but, all else being equal, they provide an opportunity for the Faculty to promote strategic areas of research. The scoring of applications follows the principles used in the assessment of National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator Grants. Ideally, successful candidates will have up to 10 years of relevant postdoctoral experience and will be seeking to establish a long-term career at the University of Melbourne. Allowance will be made for clinical researchers where specialist training has delayed or coincided with the postdoctoral training period. Faculty Trust Fellowships are expected to predict success in obtaining a nationally competitive fellowship, or an academic appointment at the University of Melbourne and the format of the application form has been based on this. Faculty Trust Fellows who are subsequently awarded a nationally competitive fellowship (such as an ARC Future Fellowship or NHMRC Investigator Grants) during the duration of their appointment must relinquish the Faculty Trust Fellowship. Faculty Trust Fellowships are not intended to be initial research appointments. Only in exceptional circumstances will applicants have less than three years’ experience since the award of their PhD. Prior overseas postdoctoral experience will generally be an advantage but is not mandatory. Candidates who are already employed at a level equal to, or more senior than, the fellowship being sought are less likely to be successful than someone of equal merit but currently employed at a lower level. Successful applications will contain clear evidence of internationally competitive research excellence with strong potential to develop as a self-directed health and medical researcher, either independently or as a member of a research team. In the latter case, the research must be clearly identifiable with the Fellow. The candidate's record will be judged relative to opportunity, taking into account career interruptions for family commitments or other reasons. Although not mandatory, it is expected that candidates for Faculty Trust Fellowships will submit an application for a NHMRC Investigator Grant or equivalent. Faculty Trust Fellowships

For emerging independent researchers

Guidelines for 2019 Funding

BackgroundAs a result of a generous donations and bequests to the University of Melbourne, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is able to offer a limited number of fellowships to talented researchers. Faculty Trust Fellowships are highly prestigious awards. They have fostered the careers of many successful researchers and are a critical mechanism to enable the Faculty to provide transitional support for emerging independent researchers.

Aims & EligibilityFellowships are awarded primarily on the basis of merit but, all else being equal, they provide an opportunity for the Faculty to promote strategic areas of research.

Grant-In-Aid (GIA)Refer to the Grant In Aid Policy document for further information on what can and cannot be purchased using GIA funds. Successful recipients of MDHS Trust fellowships are eligible to receive $10,000 per year (pro rata) GIA funding, which is supplementary to the fellow’s salary to support legitimate research expenses including consumables, travel and publication costs, in addition provided to cover legitimate costs including removal expenses to take up the Fellowship, attendance at conferences, and research expenses.

How to SubmitTo complete the application correctly, refer to the Position Description and Frequently Asked Questions documents. It is a requirement to be familiar with the NHMRC Investigator Grant information available on the NHMRC website and in GrantConnect. Specifically, the GrantConnect GO documents: Investigator Grants 2019 Guidelines and Guide to Applicants _ Investigator Grants 2019. Guide to Applicants _ Investigator Grants 2019 is known in this document as Guide to Applicants. Register on GrantConnect and download these documents.

The application must be written in English and submitted as a single, whole application document in a Portable Document Format (PDF) file, using the templates contained in this document.

Addressing the assessment criteria: Knowledge Gain (30%) Track Record, relative to opportunity (70%)

Knowledge Gain (30%)a) Grant Proposal Guidance:

The assessment of knowledge gain will be against the NHMRC category descriptors found at Table 6 of Attachment A in the Guide to Applicants.

NHMRC defines “Knowledge Gain” for the Investigator Grant scheme as the quality of the proposed research and significance of the knowledge gained. It incorporates theoretical concepts, hypothesis, research design, robustness and the extent to which the research findings will contribute to the research area and health outcomes (by advancing knowledge, practice or policy).

Applicants should note that like how NHMRC peer reviewers assess, peer reviewers of your application will as part of their assessment, consider the reproducibility and applicability of the proposed research and research design. Within the experimental design of the proposal, applicants should include sufficient information to demonstrate that robust and unbiased results will be produced.

When drafting the response to the knowledge gain criterion, applicants should include the following headings:

Research Vision for next two years: describe their research vision for the next two years Proposed research objectives, basic methodologies and expected outcomes: briefly outline the proposed research

objectives, basic methodologies and expected outcomes Importance of problem, planned outcome of research plan and potential significance of research: describe the

importance of the problem to be researched, the planned outcome of the research plan, and the potential significance of the research

Support for proposed research: describe the support for their proposed research (e.g. access to technical resources, infrastructure, equipment and facilities, and if required, access to additional expertise necessary to achieve proposed outcomes).

The significance of the study is not a measure of the prevalence/incidence of the health issue (e.g. cancer versus sudden infant death syndrome). Applications are assessed relative to opportunity, taking into consideration any career disruptions, where applicable.

b) References for the Research Proposal Guidance:

References for the Research Proposal must:

not exceed 1 page provide a list of all references cited in the application in an appropriate standard journal format, NHMRC prefers the

Author-date (also known as the Harvard System), Documentary-note and the Vancouver Systems list authors in the order in which they appear in PubMed only include references to cited work

Track Record, relative to opportunity (70%)a) Publications - applicants will be assessed based on their publications from the past 10 years (taking into account career disruptions) as provided in the Publications section of this application.

Page 3: For - staff.unimelb.edu.au  · Web viewFaculty Trust Fellowships. For emerging independent researchers. Guidelines for 2019 Funding. Background. As a result of a generous donations

Applicants are required to nominate their five best publications from those 10 years and provide explanations of why these publications have been selected, outlining the quality of the publications selected and their contribution to science (maximum of 2000 characters including spaces and line breaks).

The assessment of publications will be against the category descriptors at Table 1 of Attachment A of the Guide to Applicants.

b) Research Impact - refer to the Guide to Applicants Section 3.1.2 Addressing the assessment criteria (Research Impact).

Applicants will be assessed based on: The significance and reach of their claimed research impact The contribution of their research program to the research impact The contribution of the applicant to the research program

The assessment of research impact will be against the category descriptors at Tables 2, 3 and 4 of Attachment A Guide to Applicants. NHMRC identifies four specific types of impact:

Knowledge impact Health impact Economic impact Social impact

Demonstrating Research Impact

Applicants should only include one research program to demonstrate research impact(s) across one or more of the four types of impact. Applicants will be asked to indicate in the application which of the research impact types they would like considered in the assessment of their application. If the research program can be used to demonstrate multiple impacts, the overall research impact score is determined holistically and on balance across the four types (it is not additive). This means that an applicant with one type of impact can score as well as or better than an applicant with multiple types of impact. 5

Whilst it is expected that the research impact is recent, the research program that contributed to the research impact may be from any time in a researcher’s career – there are no time limits on when a researcher made a contribution to the research program or when the research program contributed to the research impact.

Applicants should note that there is no requirement for their research impact to align with the research proposal/vision in their application – these are assessed independently against separate assessment criteria and category descriptors.

The following is provided to assist applicants to complete the application form. Applicants should provide robust, verifiable evidence (qualitative and/or quantitative, see Table 1 Guide to Applicants) to support the claimed research impact that can be independently assessed by peer reviewers.

Type Knowledge impact Health impact Economic impact Social impact Description of research impact

New knowledge, demonstrating the benefits emerging from adoption, adaption or use of new knowledge to inform further research, and/or understanding of what is effective.

Improvements in health through new therapeutics, diagnostics, disease prevention or changes in behaviour; or improvements in disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, management of health problems, health policy, health systems, and quality of life.

Improvements in the nation’s economic performance through creation of new industries, jobs or valuable products, or reducing health care costs, improving efficiency in resource use, or improving the welfare/well-being of the population within current health system resources. An economic impact may also contribute to social or health impacts, including human capital gains and the value of life and health.

Improvements in the health of society, including the well-being of the end user and the community. This may include improved ability to access health care services, to participate socially (including empowerment and participation in decision making) and to quantify improvements in the health of society.

c) Leadership - for the assessment of leadership, applicants are required to outline their outputs over the past 10 years (taking into account career disruptions) across each of the four leadership elements:

1. Research Mentoring 2. Research Policy and Professional Leadership 3. Institutional Leadership 4. Research Programs and Team Leadership

Page 4: For - staff.unimelb.edu.au  · Web viewFaculty Trust Fellowships. For emerging independent researchers. Guidelines for 2019 Funding. Background. As a result of a generous donations

Each element will be addressed by applicants in separate fields with a maximum of 2000 characters including spaces and line breaks per field.

Career Disruption (within the last 10 years) A Career Disruption is defined as a prolonged interruption to an applicant’s capacity to work due to pregnancy, major illness/injury and/or career responsibilities. For guidance on what constitutes a career disruption and how it is considered, refer to the Investigator Grants 2019 Guidelines.

a) Impact - Applicants are required to provide a brief explanation of the impact the career disruption (s) has had on their research, research achievements and associated productivity relative to their career stage. Applicants should not describe the nature of the career disruption in this field. Note that the information in this field will be provided to peer reviewers (maximum of 2000 characters including spaces and line breaks).

b) Date - Applicants are required to nominate the periods when they have a had a disruption (approximate dates)

Relative to Opportunity (within the last 10 years)If applicable, the applicant should use this section to provide details on any relative to opportunity considerations and the effect they have had on their research and research achievements (see Investigator Grants 2019 Guidelines for further information).

a) Circumstance - Provide a brief explanation of the type of relative to opportunity circumstance (maximum of 200 characters including spaces and line breaks).

b) Impact - Applicants are required to provide a brief explanation of the impact this has had on their research, research achievements and associated productivity relative to their career stage (maximum of 1500 characters including spaces and line breaks).

c) Date - Applicants are required to nominate the periods when they have a had a disruption (approximate dates)

PublicationsApplicants will be assessed based on their publications from the past 10 years (taking into account career disruptions) as recorded in the Publication section of the application form.

Assessment Process Applications will be assessed by committee assessment and ranking.

Conditions of AwardBy accepting the award, recipients agree to the following:

Annual ReportAll Trust fellows must submit short annual reports on progress of their research due on the anniversary of their award. The report will be reviewed by the Faculty, as per the position descriptions for each fellowship. A report template is attached to this document and it is the fellow’s responsibility to ensure the timely submission of reports.

Acknowledgment of support MDHS trust grants and fellowships are funded from funds established through the generosity of alumni, former staff and other benefactors as well as philanthropic foundations. Recipients of MDHS trust grants and fellowships are required to acknowledge the support of the donor or trust on publications or written material which relate to the funded research/project, provide annual reports so that donors may understand the use to which the funds are being put, and may be asked to attend thank you, award, prize-giving or other ceremonies to acknowledge the generous support that has made the research/project possible.

Conditions of PaymentFunding will be provided to the administering entity (Department) as a total salary package (Fellowship Support Package, FSP) which includes the Fellow’s salary and the additional on-costs incurred by the appointment. This is similar to the NHMRC Personnel Support Package (PSP) except it will be based on actual UoM salaries and include grant-in-aid support.

Note, requests to carry forward unspent GIA must be received by [email protected] by the end of September each year.

If not applicable, please write “not applicable” or “intentionally left blank”

Example extract from Guide NHMRC Peer Review 2018:

As an example of career disruption considerations: If, in the last five years, an applicant took 18 months maternity leave before returning to an active research career, then that applicant can add on an extra 18 months to the normal duration counted for all of the applicant’s outputs. These outputs include publication and translation outcomes: refer to sections 6.2 and 6.2.1 of the NHMRC Funding Rules. A peer reviewer must then take into consideration in their assessment of track record, the additional outputs provided by the applicant to account for the career disruption.

DatesApplicants are required to nominate the periods when they have had a disruption (approximate dates).
