Vidya Balan comes with a very strong traditional image, owing to her use of saree as a preferred garb at most times. How tough was it for you to transform that image and mould it into something else? It was a unique experience and great challenge for me to design Vidya’s character, considering the audience is used to and loves see- ing her in sarees. We haven’t seen Vidya in western outfits for a while now. So, the constant pressure of whether or not the audience will love her as much in western clothing was always there. But, since Vidya is an actor who gets involved in the smallest of details of the character she plays, she would let me experiment with various silhouettes to figure which looks best on her, at the same time keeping in mind her character. We went through several rounds of ideation to freeze on the character she’s playing and I must admit that she never lost patience over the number of trials we did. 2. Since Vidya’s body structure is unlike most actresses today, what cuts, styles, colours, etc, did you give her clothes in this film? Keeping any restrictions in colour palette wasn’t required just be- cause she has a curvaceous body. I just played with warm colours to show the fun side to her character. The colour palette has been from browns to corals, greens and blues. While working on silhouettes, I have given her straight-cuts to A-line outfits, in various lengths. Of course, I have given her few maxis to bring out the dormant hippiness in her character. I visualised and designed the character not in cou- ture clothes, but fused in flea market and high street brands to achieve the free-spirited vivacious upper-middle class Trisha. 3. How much of a free hand do you get while styling the look of a film? How much does a star involve himself / herself in the styling process? While working on Shaadi Ke Side Effects, I had absolute freedom on costume designing and styling the characters in the film. Both Farhan and Vidya were great fun to work with because they gave me absolute liberty to create each and every look. They never interfered with my thought process. Of course, they were the ones who would always help me keep the characters rooted. The footwear blog hasrecently launched its maiden footwear collection, titled The Ikat Collection. EACH DESIGN IS AVAILABLE IN FOUR DIFFERENT COLOURS “I had always planned to start The Sole Sisters’ line of shoes. I wanted to design and create the kind of footwear I would love to wear,” adds Cariappa. The collection comprises sandals, each of which are made from 100% genuine leather with hand-tied and hand-dyed Ikat fabric. “There are two designs on offer currently. Each design is available in four colours. They are a limited edition series and are made to order,” says Cariappa, adding that she used Ikat because she loves its asymmetrical, graphic and random patterns, which look beautiful. “No two sandals, even in the same colour end up looking the same,” states Cariappa. Both designs are priced at R1,800. “Having just launched the shoes, they will be available for the next two months,” she signs off. NEW ERA BEGINS AT DAYTONA WITH IMSA CONTINENTAL TIRE SPORTSCAR CHALLENGE T he Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 returns to its racing roots this week when the all-new Camaro Z/28.R race car debuts in a 2.5-hour endurance race ahead of the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona. It will be one of the most production-based com- petitors on the track, sharing aero, engine and even axle components with the new 2014 Camaro Z/28. Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport will campaign Z/ 28.R race cars in the GS class of the IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge. The Daytona race begins at 1:45 p.m. EST, on Friday, Jan. 24, kicking off the 12-race 2014 season. “The original Camaro Z/28 was designed for racing and became an iconic performance car through its hard-fought victories,” said Mark Kent, director of rac- ing for Chevrolet. “A new chapter in racing begins this week, as the new Camaro Z/28 makes its com- petition debut in one of the most hotly contested series in motorsports.” Developed alongside its produc- tion counterpart, the Z/28.R incor- porates the same performance elements that make the 2014 Camaro Z/28 the most track-ca- pable Camaro ever. To enhance grip, for example, the Z/28.R’s body shares the same downforce- generating aero package as the production model, including: * Front splitter * Rear spoiler with wickerbill * Hood extractor vent * Rockers, wheel-house exten- sions and front tire deflectors * Belly pan. Usually caused by infection, suffering from sore throat can get very irri- tating as it burns and you also face difficulty swallowing your food. How- ever, you can cure this condition by trying one of these natural remedies. Salt water gargle: Though old-fashioned, salt water gargle is quick and effective sore-throat relief. Besides being a mild antiseptic, salt helps to clear out the phlegm from your throat and reduce its swelling. Add half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Stir it thoroughly, so it dis- solves and gargle. Repeat about three times a day. Honey: Easily available on kitchen shelves, honey is a traditional sore- throat remedy. Due to its antibacterial properties, it can speed up the healing process. Add a teaspoon of honey to one cup of hot water or have it with herbal tea. Ginger tea: Though it has a spicy flavour, ginger works brilliantly as a sore-throat remedy. It helps flush out toxins from your body and boosts your blood circulation. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help kill bad bacteria. So, grate some ginger root in in a warm, soothing cup of tea.

Why people started to drinkmilk thousands of years ago

WASHINGTON: A new study has tried to understand why itwas so advantageous to drink milk in different par ts of theworld over the last 10,000 years.Mutations that enabled lifelong milk drinking appeared inde-pendently in several par ts of the world over the last 7,500years, according to growing evidence. And those genes spreadrapidly.Today, about a third of adults around the world can drink milkwithout stomach problems, a trait known as lactase persis-tence.The study debunks one leading theory: that milk provided avaluable source of vitamin D, which would’ve helped peopleabsorb its calcium.Newly analyzed human skeletons from an ancient site in Spainshow that the milk-drinking gene spread just as rapidly in thatsun-drenched climate as it did in other places, suggesting thatmilk must have been beneficial there for some reason otherthan its vitamin D content.Oddny Sverrisdottir, an evolutionary biologist at the Universityof Uppsala in Sweden said that throughout the years, she hasheard so many evolutionary hypotheses about lactase persis-tence because they are so fun to coin. She said that for decades now, people have hypothesized that itwas because of lack of sunlight in the nor th of Europe thatpeople would have had to supplement the lack of calcium andvitamin D by drinking milk. Now, looking at this picture from Spain, she added that thecalcium-assimilation hypothesis either didn’t affect the evolu-tion of lactase persistence at all, or other forces were there aswell.Sverrisdottir has long been interested in how and why Europe’searly farmers began drinking milk, so she was excited whenshe got her hands on well-preserved samples of skeletal re-mains from eight people who lived in nor theastern Spain about5,000 years ago. That was well after the milk-drinking mutation had appeared innor thern Europe, and she was eager to find out if those ancientSpaniards were drinking milk, too. So the first thing she didwas test their DNA for lactase persistence. To figure out whether the recent and rapid spread of lactasepersistence in Spain was a fluke or if natural selection was atplay, Sverrisdóttir and colleagues compared the mitochondrialDNA of modern Spaniards with the ancient samples. Mitochon-drial DNA changes very slowly, making it ideal for tracing fam-ily trees over time. The researchers repor t that the analyses showed that the an-cient cave dwellers were indeed ancestors of people who liveand frequently drink milk in Spain today.

“WASHINGTON: A researchteam headed by Tufts Universitybiologist Colin Orians will studythis development in a four-yearproject funded by a 931,000-dol-lar-grant from the National Sci-ence Foundation. The study will first examine how cli-mate change affects the concentrationof chemical compounds that are respon-sible for tea’s stimulant, sensory and health-ful proper ties.

Their work will build on preliminary research conducted insouthwestern China’s Yunnan Province by co-prin-

cipal investigator and tea expert Selena Ahmedwhile she was a graduate student and later Train-

ing in Education and Critical Research SkillsProgram (TEACRS) postdoctoral fellow atTufts. Green tea, Orians notes, is widelyknown to contain high concentrations ofantioxidants that are believed to help pre-vent or moderate a range of health prob-lems associated with the heart, bloodsugar and digestion. The study findingsmay also help scientists and growersbetter understand climate change’seffects on other agricultural prod-ucts such as grapes and cher-

the researchers will survey consum-ers to determine how tea drinkers re-

Spirituality and religion may protect brain from depressionThe study by Lisa Miller, professor and director of Clinical Psy-chology and director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Teach-ers College, Columbia University, involved 103 adults at eitherhigh or low risk of depression, based on family history. The subjects were asked how highly they valued religion or spiri-tuality. Brain MRIs showed thicker cortices in subjects who placeda high impor tance on religion or spirituality than those who didnot. The relatively thicker cor tex was found in precisely the sameregions of the brain that had otherwise shown thinning in peopleat high risk for depression. The results suggested that spiritualityor religion may protect against major depression by thickeningthe brain cor tex and counteracting the cor tical thinning that would

normally occur with major depression. The study is published by journal JAMA Psychiatry

hereditary factors, lack of sleep, illness, stress and nutritionaldeficiencies. Therefore, alongwith external treatment, it isadvisable to take these aspectsinto consideration in order toestablish the cause and bringabout the necessary changes.

Dark circles can develop atan early age, like adolescence andearly 20s, although it is morecommon in older people. This isdue to the causes discussedabove. The way to prevent darkcircles is to have a nutritious andbalanced diet, including freshfruits, salads, yogurt and sproutsin your daily diet, along withunprocessed cereals, skimmedmilk, cottage cheese (paneer),lentils and beans.

Daily exercise, along withdeep breathing, helps bloodcirculation, oxygenation andcontrol of stress. Adequate sleepand relaxation are very important.

Gentle movements and alight touch are essential while

handling the area, to remove makeup or apply creams. It is betternot to massage the area, so thatthe skin does not get pulled orstretched in any way.

Any massage of the areashould be done during aprofessional facial, so that correcttechniques are employed. Acleansing gel or cream should beused to remove make-up, usingmoist cotton wool. Gels andcreams help to dissolve make upand grime and thus facilitate theirremoval.

A cream which has beenspecially formulated for the areaaround the eyes should beapplied. Heavy creams are notsuitable. It should be a cream witha light texture and consistency. The cream should be removedwith a moist cotton wool after 10minutes. Cream should never beleft on the area around the eyesduring the night. Normal facialmasks should not be appliedaround the eyes. An under-eye

cream, containing almond, isgood, as it not only nourishes theskin, but has a lightening effecton the colour tone, if used over aperiod of time. Facial masks areusually not applied around theeyes. Eye fatigue can also berelived with washing. Wash youreyes with warm water and followthis with cold water. Thisimproves blood circulation to theeyes and soothes them. - Along with external care anda healthy lifestyle, take time offfor relaxation, using eye pads.Take cotton wool and make twothick square pads. They can besoaked in cucumber juice or rosewater. Lie down, close your eyesand put the soaked pads on them.Keep them on for about 15minutes. Used tea bags can alsobe used as eye pads.

- Applying a compress oficed water or cold milk directlyover closed lids for 15 to 20minutes also helps.
