External Examiner for PhD thesis at the University of Alberta, 2013-14.

I continued to co-supervise four international PhD students who stayed with me previouslyat the University of Saskatchewan with exchange visits: A.Poye of Aix-MarseilleUniversity, France; R. Sgalla of University of São Paulo, Brazil; F. Bashir of SalamChair, Government College University, Lahore, Pakistan; and S. Ivko, KharkovNational University, Ukraine. A. Poye has successfully defended his Ph. D. thesis inOctober 2012.

I was a member of the jury examining committee for two international Ph. D. students: D.Meshcheriakov, of CEA Cadarache/Aix-Marseille University and De F Solminihac,Aix-Marseille University, October 2012.

Two PhD exchange graduate students, Renee Sgalla, from University of San Paulo, Braziland Fraz Bashir, from University College Lahore, Pakistan, visited me for 6 monthseach (February-August) supported by the Scholarships from Foreign Affairs andInternational Trade Canada (DFAIT). I supervised their research projects during thestay at U of S. It involved daily meetings with students (often several meetings in oneday) to describe the research projects and background, check and discuss their workand progress. The interaction with Renee Sgalla also involved the reading class onNeoclassical Theory which I have prepared for him. He was working though my lecturenotes and we were meeting regularly (several times a week) for additional explanationsand discussions. The results of these research projects are being prepared forpublications. I maintain e-mail communications with these students and theirsupervisors at home institutions guiding them further in the research.

Plasma Physics Seminar:I organized and conducted Graduate Plasma Physics Seminar (October 2010-April 2011),

over 20 presentations in total. I gave 3 seminars myself.

9.4 NEW OR REVISED TEACHING MATERIALS DEVELOPED OR AUTHORED

2011-2012: I substantially reworked the class materials for EP464 (teaching it for second year in 2011-

2012). I prepared over hundred pages of class lecture notes which were made availableto students. I have prepared new assignments and practice problems for two chapters inthe course (Transmission Lines and Antennas, over 50 problems in total).

For Phys 461/Phys 861, a new Collection of Tutorial and Assignments problems (over 90problems in total) was prepared.

All these (and more) teaching materials were made available to students via BlackboardLearn pages at U of S. I was working with Stephanie Frost of Gwena Moss Centre onOpen CourseWare project. The goal of this project is to make the course materialsavailable to wide audience of U of S students besides those registered in a particularcourse, e.g. via the commonly accessible links, such as http://ocw.usask.ca/AR/EP/464.

June 2014 Smolyakov, Andrei I.

2010-2011: I was assigned to teach a new (for me) class, EP464, AppliedElectromagnetics. I had to modify this class substantially from the version that wastaught previously. I selected a new textbook, which had many modern applicationexamples. I developed new lecture notes, new assignments and solutions for thiscourse.

2009-2010. I was assigned to teach Phys 812, Electromagnetic Theory, class for the firsttime in 2009-10. I prepared my lecture notes, assignments and solutions.

2006-2007. I was assigned to teach new for me class: Phys381.3- Quantum Mechanics. Ihave prepared my lecture notes, and parts of the assignments and solutions.

2002-2003. I was assigned to teach a new class: Phys 402- Techniques of TheoreticalPhysics I

2001-2002. I was assigned to teach two new for me classes: Phys 227 – Electricity andMagnetism I and EP 317, Applied Physics of Materials. I have prepared my lecturenotes, new assignments and solutions. A new textbook was selected for EP 317.

1997-1998. I was assigned to teach new for me class: Phys403 - Techniques of TheoreticalPhysics II. I have prepared my lecture notes, new assignments and solutions.

9.5 SUBSTANTIALLY REVISED OR NEW COURSES DEVELOPED ANDAPPROVED

2009-2010. New class, Phys 461/Phys 861 was prepared, approved and given for the first time. New lecture notes, assignments and solutions were prepared for geophysical fluids component of the class. Lecture notes, assignments and solutions for plasma physics part were substantially revised.
