JULY 2018 2 Mid-Town Bulletin
Dear Friends,
Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town is in its 50th year. To become President of this prestigious Club, especially in this year, is indeed a privilege. It is also humbling when I look at the past presidents who’ve served our Rotary Club.
As I write this message, I cannot help but think of one of Warren Buffet’s quotes. He said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone else planted a tree long ago.” So, it would only be fair that we do a bit of planting ourselves. We as Rotarians, based on this quote, act not only by choosing to be a member of this Club but also by contributing time and money to our Clubs causes.
Having said that, under the leadership of Manoj Jalan, what a wonderful year we have had! We have undertaken many meaningful projects, but, to both Manoj and I, the most important thing is that we added 12 new members to our Club. New members bring with them energy and enthusiasm galore, and this year, some of our relatively new members have taken up leadership roles in the Clubs activities and for this, I am grateful and proud.
We kick off this year with Hindi comedy play “Wrong Number” on the 4th August. The Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town will be hosting the event in association with the Inner Wheel Club. I am grateful to Mrs. Asha Singh, President of the Inner Wheel Club, for her support. Vice President Abuzar Zakir, IPP Manoj Jalan and Fellowship Committee Chairmen Mohan Lalwani and Rahul Mehta continue to work tirelessly to plan this and the many upcoming events and I am extremely thankful for that.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan is a mission we, as proud Indians, need to fulfill. For this, with efforts from Yogesh Pandya, our Club aims to undertake a global grant for building 450 toilets. Yes, it is a tall order, but I am sure that a Club like ours would have no issues raising funds for such a high impact project.Availability of drinking water is expected to be a huge problem in the near future. Unfortunately, today, many villages and communities in India struggle to gain access to this basic necessity. Along with Nirbhay Jain, Founder and Chairman of SKS Chakshu Foundation, our Club will do a drinking water project, thanks to their generous donation. As a doctor I feel privileged to be able to help an individual while doing what I have been trained to do. This year, like in the last 15 years, we will do the plastic surgery camp and also try to close funding for two years of this project by way of a global grant. We will also do a cataract surgery project and perform between 100-200 surgeries in South Mumbai. The surgeries will be performed by me and volunteer ophthalmologists. Since this project will be held close to where most of the members live and work, the Board of Directors hope that members will come and take part in large numbers and see for themselves how they are changing lives. As part of the project, patients will undergo eye examinations, cataract surgeries, and will also be provided with medications post-surgery and glasses, six weeks after surgery. I am happy to announce that we have already received funding for a 100 surgeries for this project.
The Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town will continue to support its partners for many years like the ISKON Midday Meal Program, Naseoh and the Kamla Mehta School for the blind. Abuzar Zakir, who is also the Chairman of the Medical Camps Committee, is also in talks with the district to plan a very big camp for the Mumbai Police. I sincerely hope that this camp fructifies.
I would like to thank Manoj and Sonali for the immense support shown to me. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors. Finally, a big thank you to Raju and Sushma Barwale, my parents, and my wife Sarika for all the help and support.
I know that with all your encouragement we will have a great year ahead and will continue with all our social endeavors.

Little Hearts Project
6th June: PDG Dr. Bharat Pandya on ‘Timeless Rotary’
The Rotary Club of Edgware and Stanmore donated 400 pounds to the Little Hearts Project on Sunday, 1st July, 2018. Pres. Dr. Deepak Garg, in the midst of Manoj Jalan, Immediate Past President, Sucharita Hegde, Past President and Yogesh Pandya, Director International Projects, received the donation from Mr. Suresh Bharwaney and Mrs. Anjali Bharwaney.
It was an honour for our Club to have PDG Dr. Bharat Pandya as a speaker on 6th June. Dr. Pandya was the District Governor of our Dist. 3140 from 2006-07. Over the years, he has served Rotary International (RI) in various capacities. Recently, he was elected as RI Director for the year 2019-21, which is an honour for our Dist. 3141. Dr. Pandya was felicitated in the meeting for his election as Director where everyone wished him for his forthcoming term.
Dr. Pandya is a gifted orator with an extensive collection of quotations. His inspiring words were an encouragement for the audience. A graduate from the KEM Hospital and Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai, Dr. Pandya has been a practicing General and laparoscopic surgeon for the last 30 years. His wife, Dr. Madhavi Pandya, is an OB-GYN and was also the District Chairman of Inner Wheel Dist. 314 for the year 2017-18.
With his vast knowledge on history and achievements of Rotary, Dr. Pandya spoke at length about the phenomenal work done by Rotary across the world, over the decades, in various areas of service. Rotary has a huge presence in Asia where community development work is being done on a large scale. Dr. Pandya gave advice, based on his experiences, on ways to strengthen the Club and overcome the challenge of membership development, an issue faced by all Clubs alike. He also shared at length what his role and responsibilities would be as RI Director.
In conclusion, the session with Dr. Pandya acknowledged the great work undertaken by Rotary in India, and simultaneously took a look at the many challenges that need to be surmounted to flourish and achieve the intended goals of service.

15th June: Awards NightAs has been tradition, the Awards Night was held on the last month of the Rotary Year in the beautiful C.K. Nayudu Hall of the Cricket Club of India. Being a Friday, the turnout was huge and members indulged in a Fellowship prior to the start of the formal meeting.
In a brief talk, Pres. Manoj Jalan thanked all the members for a smooth year gone by and emphasised that he could discharge his role only with the support of members, which was available for the asking.
Over the next hour or so, awards for the year were announced and the award donors or past presidents were requested to come up and present the awards. Post the awards distribution, cakes were cut to celebrate the birthdays and anniversaries falling in the month of June.

20th June: A session with Jamal Mecklai
Jamal Mecklai is considered to be the guru of financial risk management in India. A chemical engineer from IIT who went on to do his doctoral research in biomedical engineering from USA, Mecklai moved into lines of work most disconnected to his education. He became a freelance media consultant and over course founded Mecklai Financial Services Ltd., a leading financial risk management company in India.
Having assessed international markets on risk and risk managements, Jamal feels, "The market is God's creation" and no one can decide the market. One can only speculate by knowledge and experience. He has been appointed on several key committees by the Government of India, most notably the Sodhani Committee set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 1994-95 to suggest methods of deepening and widening the local foreign exchange market, and the R.V. Gupta Committee of the RBI (1997) to assess whether and how Indian companies should access international markets to hedge commodity price risk. He has done a wide array of consulting work on policy issues (including work for the World Bank on a special assignment for the Forward Markets Commission in India) and on risk and risk management (for some of the best corporate names in India, both financial and non-financial, including Ashok Leyland Ltd., Exim Bank of India, HUDCO, Infosys Technologies Ltd., and JSW Ltd).
On Wednesday, Mecklai started the talk by saying that there is no way that markets can be predicted and all those who claim to be able to do so are bluffing or delusional. According to him, when the chips are down, the flow starts coming out. The markets act in cycles but the cycles are identical. One can only try to safeguard oneself from movements and fluctuations, but being able to predict with certainty is simply not possible. Regarding the international markets, he
feels that Europe is the best reincarnation of liberal democracy. He spoke about the conditions under which the Euro came into being, which, though made life simpler for Europe, is not easy to hold on to. He believes that a day will come when Euro will have to be disbanded simply because there is too much of variance in the state of the economies of the members of EU and the stronger economies will support the weaker ones only to a certain point. The internal issues and problems of the stronger economies will, sooner rather than later, compel them to question the unending propping-up that the weaker members seek and the Union will come unravelling.
Mecklai further shared his experiences and beliefs saying that The United States of America has a new wave with the massive progress in technology and that this new wave, which will eventually flow to the world, will be fantastic. There will be a considerable increase in the number of people helping others. "A brave new world," is what he calls it. He sums up by saying, "No one can forecast the market as everybody makes rules which suit themselves."
The talk was followed by an interesting Q&A session. It was a pleasure listening to Jamal Mecklai.

During the last few months the Club has added almost a dozen new members. In order to assimilate them into the Club and for everyone to know more about these new members, a ‘Know Your Rotarian’ session was held a few months ago. It was befitting that this meeting was also the last meeting of the Rotary year 2017-18 and Pres. Manoj Jalan thanked all for a smooth and enjoyable term.
On 27th June, new Rotarian members Rajesh Sharma, Antonio Fasano and Dr. Lotika Purohit were on the dais with senior member PP Navin Shah for a Q&A session which was moderated by our witty PP Rahul Mehta. He asked them questions, turn by turn, to keep the dialogue going for all.
Mr. Sharma is the Chairman and MD of Ion Exchange Ltd., a leading water and sewage treatment company in India. Originally from Delhi, when Sharma first moved to Mumbai about 20 years ago, he stayed in a hotel for six years and hoped to be able to go back to Delhi soon! However, days turned into weeks, months, and then years, and before he knew it, Mumbai had grown on him and he finally made it his home. Sharma with his expertise in water and sewage treatment exponentially grew his company’s international presence. His wife, Aruna, runs a school for special children and the couple can offer their knowledge in these two areas, water and education, for Rotary projects.
Mr. Fasano is from Italy and came to India about 10 years ago. In Italy, his family lived on the beautiful island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples. Fasano is the Managing Director of Relations at Work India Advisory P. Ltd., a company that helps international companies, especially European, to set up base or deal with India. His wife Dina is from Russia and they met in Mumbai. They were recently blessed with a baby boy.
27th June: Know your Members
Dr. Purohit is a Diabetologist and so is her husband Dr. Suresh Purohit. They both practice in Colaba and their patients are predominantly from Gulf and Africa. She is passionate about patient care and claims to have been able to drastically improve the life of many of her patients with excellent diabetes management and counselling. The Club can well use their services for various medical projects.
PP Navin Shah is a senior member of our Club and well known to many, however, it was necessary that more be known about him by the new and not so new members. Originally from Kolkata, Shah moved to Mumbai to run a successful business. He later started devoting time to his family’s charity initiative, Lotus Eye Hospital, in Juhu. Lotus is well known for eye treatments and 30% of their patients from the indigent class are treated free of cost. Shah has also been the President of the prestigious Willingdon Club. A lover of music, he is also connected to Sangeet Kala Kendra.
PP Rahul Mehta conducted the session with much humour. His amusing remarks resulted in everyone enjoying the session.
