There was a good atmosphere in the dairy ring with an excellent trade for the best
heifers. Judging was in the competent hands of Colin Whitelock who picked T & C
Robinson’s 31 litre heifer as winner in the non-registered class which sold at £1680
to Michael Kenyon. The pedigree winner came from Samantha Sugden which also
sold to M Kenyon at £1900. There were lots of good 30 litre heifers today with Rob
Smith, Samlesbury selling at £1820 and Lee Donkin with an unplaced heifer at
£1700.
Plainer sorts were still above the £1200 mark and in-calf heifers were a very mixed
show topping at £1120 for E Nowell & Son, Bashall Eaves.
NEXT WEEK we expect 25-30 new calved followed by 80 head from Pawson’s,
Longridge: 60 in-calf and 20 ready to serve. Catalogue on web Friday.

Today was the Autumn Calf Show and although we had a good entry of 177
calves in total, 62 of which were Blues, there was only a handful presented for the
pre-sale judging.
John Swann, Little Ouseburn, York judged the four classes kindly sponsored by
Judith Smith Accountancy and Genus Breeding.
Alec Simpson, Bolton by Bowland received the Championship with his 6.5 week
old Simmental bull which went on to sell for £500. Reserve rosette went to D K &
J Carlisle’s (Cracoe) Limousin heifer out of a Blonde cow at £395. Full prize
winners schedule below.
Generally, a very good trade for Continental bulls and heifers. The top price of the
day was £580 for John Pendlebury’s Blue bull, which was too old for the show. A
nice run of Charolais from J C Lees all over £400. A quartet of Blue hefiers from
Paul and John Cowgill sold for £412 a piece. A shortage of native calves today,
but a couple of Hereford bulls from Mark Bolton sold well at £410 and £362.
NEXT WEEK is HEREFORD WEEK – so we expect a few more around. Today
was not stirk week but 11 turned up anyway including 5 young Limousin bulls all
over £500. We expect at least 50 stirks next Thursday to follow the calves.
Would vendors please ring the office on 01200 441351 with anticipated entries
BY TUESDAY lunchtime for advertising.

Auctioneer Rachel Capstick: Cast sheep started the day. Continentals in the £65-£80 bracket.
Not many Mules today, but the better end £60s. Horned ewes averaged £39 for all quality.
Prime lambs, if well fleshed and some weight up could make late £70s-£86 no problem (180p-
196/kg), but the amount of raw and small lambs forward pulled the sqq average back to
166p/kg.
There was a shortage of youth in the breeding ewes, but a decent trade for the goods on offer.
Cheviots were good to sell. Andrew Atkinson brought a nice run to sell of particular note
some huge Texel 3 crops at £134 and Swaledales at £85. Texel Shearlings were dearer as
the choice is becoming limited as the season goes on. The better Mules £120-£134.
Topping the gimmer lamb section was a pen of pure Charollais from Grassington at £155.
The best white faced ewe lambs could command a premium, but some second rate gimmers
would be better sold on a single tag through the stores! Something for everyone in the stores.
Plenty of competition for the better end where £60 was the starting price pen after pen. Some
noteable larger runs of lambs from Alan Greenwood, Chris Alty, Earnshaws & Westalls.
Penning up in the cattle yard is encouraging bigger batches – George Blacklidge with 100
cheviots in the ring proves popular with buyers and staff! A very pleasing average of £55 for
all quality was achieved. Entries for next Saturday 15th to the office by Tuesday lunch time
01200 441351 for advertising. It is also helpful for penning & marketing purposes if you let us
know approximate numbers of prime lambs & cast ewes in advance too. Thanks.

A sharp trade in the dairy ring again today. Top price went to Rob Smith of

£1380. Pete Dakin was also in the money at £1640 with a Friesian type heifer
selling to J Faud of Great Harwood. M Bristol, Newton, showed an excellent red
heifer giving 30 litres which sold to Hill & Davies, Wrexham. G W Whitwell,
Austwick, showed a milky 2nd calver to J J & J D Graves at £1680.
NEXT WEEK IS COGENT WEEK when we expect 30 milkers plus 8 pedigree In-
calf heifers due November.
The first part of Bill Pawson’s young stock dispersal saw a good crowd of mainly
local bidders which provided a respectable trade for 60 in-calf heifers due from
November to April. They averaged just over £1,000 for some well bred heifers
which looked very competitive compared to recent imports. Twenty bulling heifers
were slightly harder to sell, making a top price of £740 and averaging £630. The
remainder of Pawson’s young stock will be sold on Thursday 27th October.
Today’s picture (below) is of T S Smith & Son, Claughton on Brock in the ring for
the last time selling his last animal from his holding Hole House Farm. We wish Mr
Smith well on his graceful retirement.

Another bumper day in the calf ring 338 calves and stirks. A good trade for the
Continental calves, 70 Blues in total. Bulls from £180 to £475 and heifers £150 to
£440, something for everyone. The heifers were particularly good to sell.
Natives were well bid for and today was Hereford weeka which attracted a few
more. Black and white bull calves were harder to find new homes for!
The stirks which followed were dominated numbers-wise by black and white bulls
and steers. We cannot stress enough, the importance of pre-entering by a
Tuesday lunchtime prior to a Thursday, to give us a chance to contact buyers. The
Continental stirks attracted plenty of interest and were good to sell.

Auctioneer’s comment: A good show of lambs today with all regular buyers in
attendance. Trade very similar on the week and again a noticeable difference in
the price paid for fleshy, well finished lambs compared with lambs that lack finish.
Generally, 41 to 44kg Farm Assured lambs selling at 165 p/kg regular away.
Better end lambs topping at 223 p/kg for smart lambs
from RA Wallbank & Son and many more either side
of the 200 p/kg mark. More Farm Assured lambs
required.
Heavier end lambs seemed harder to cash today,
however, ther would be more of these about.
Ewes again a flyer at Gisburn, compared with other
centres, where more could have been sold to
vendors’ advantages. All qualities were rewarded
with enhanced prices, topping the trade with straight
pedigree Texels was Swinbank & Doyle at £140 per
head. Cont JT for info 07834772276

217 calves and stirks. All continentals very good to sell as were herefords & angus. It's just the black & white
bulls which are a struggle at the moment! Blues were fantastic 48 bulls over £400 time after time & 30
heifers regularly £350 plus. Remember next week is stirk week and includes the autumn show - so will be
some smart goods on offer. Also expect blue and angus calves ready for weaning to be particularly good for
next two Thursdays.

Auctioneer Rachel Capstick: Cast sheep started the morning and compared to trade earlier
on in the week vendors would be very pleasantly surprised indeed.
Prime Lambs followed and again trade was for brisker than earlier in the week, particularly for
smarter and heavier lambs.
Breeders next, and a pure British Alpine bill goat defied all expectations and sold for an
amazing £180.00!
Ewes and shearlings were a good trade for the time of year and goods on offer. Proper
gimmer lambs are worth the double tag!
A pen of pure Charollais from WM Hall, Grassington topped this section at £132.00. Good
white headed Texel’s could achieve more than store price, but second rate gimmers are better
in the stores. Mule gimmers from Richard Mawson £76.00 to £82.00 and from Gordon
Haynes £76.00 to £83.00.
Store lambs topped at £70.00. Good lambs regularly £60.00 plus, but as the season wears
on, the amount of smaller lambs forward pulled the overall average back to £51.00.

Texel ram lambs from JW & LJ Mellin sold to £470 & £420 whilst Texel x ramlambs realised £310 again from TC Whiteford.

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon:
Apologies for no report last week but we dashed off to the
British Farming Awards at Birmingham. Congratulations to
Farmers’ Guardian for a very well run event. Also well done to
Meg Elliot for winning auctioneer of the year.
Today was another sharp trade with David & Sue Graveston and Malcolm Fell
hitting £1760 and £1780 respectively and George & David Whitwell topping the day
for a wonderful 2nd calver at £1880.
In-calf heifers made to £1520 and £1500 for Angela Middleton, Wigton. The sale
was followed by the final group of cattle from L & M Pawson, Inglewhite. First in
the ring was a Procters bred 18 month old Limousin Bull which sold at £2000.00.
This was a perfect bull for dairy heifers but not shapey enough for the suckler boys.
The bulling heifers were similar trade to last sale at £600-£660 but the younger and
smarter calves sold for similar prices. Alta Oak heifers were very impressive
making up to £580 for 4months old stirks. The dairy team worked hard today and
we have been very honoured to sell Messrs Pawsons’ cattle.
NEXT WEEK is show week with 30+ milkers, 10 In-calf and some more bulling
heifers on offer.

What a day! A predicted, all calves were simply a right trade!
Even black and white bulls were better today. 47 Blue bulls, 25
of which were above £400. 34 Blue heifers, 20 of which were
above £350. Where else could you find such a choice of TB4
calves?
174 stirks followed the calves and provided a wide range of
goods from the smart suckler bred types to Holstein Friesian
bulls and bullocks and everything else inbetween.
The Autumn Stirk ShowKindly judged by Simon Thompson, the results were as follows:
Best Male Animal

Auctioneer’s comment: Lambs up in trade on the week with
numbers less nationwide. All weights and qualities dearer on the
week where more lambs could have been sold to vendors
advantages. Ewes still coming forward in numbers and prices
increasing upwards compared with last weeks trade.
