Around 2.1 million Australians suffer from mild osteoarthritis, an inflammatory joint condition that mostly affects the hands, spine and joints such as hips, knees and ankles, and usually gets worse over time.1

Inflammation is a key part of the body’s immune system

The inflammation effect

The good …

When our white blood cells protect us from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses — inflammation is the body’s natural response.4

This type of inflammation is typically localised to protect, heal and restore normal tissue function and often causes redness, swelling, pain or heat.5 This is where inflammation is doing good things for your body.

What is inflammation?

The bad …

When inflammation is prolonged, it can fuel symptoms such as heat, redness, pain and swelling, and may cause damage to your body’s tissues,6 leading to certain degenerative conditions. Inflammation is exacerbated by excess weight, a poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, smoking, pollution, poor oral health and alcohol.7

Australia is aching with inflammatory joint painPain, stiffness and limited joint movement, typically manifesting in the knees and hips is generally first felt during and after activity, but as the condition worsens pain may be felt during minor movements or even at rest.2

Low levels of vitamin D may be linked with higher levels of inflammatory markers so if you suffer from inflammatory joint pain, get your vitamin D levels tested by your GP. 3

If you suffer from swelling, pain and joint inflammation associated with mild osteoarthritis then you can be proactive to help reduce associated symptoms.

Being aware and addressing modifiable risk factors, as well as lifestyle and dietary interventions is critical.

You can also take your cue from traditional medicines too. A blend of natural compounds used for thousands of years may also help relieve symptoms.

Together they may help maintain and support healthy joints, and relieve symptoms of mild osteoarthritis.

There are ways to manage the symptoms… naturally!

Early intervention can delay the onset of reduced mobility due to degenerative joint conditions – and while mild osteoarthritis is not yet curable, it is usually manageable.

Get your room in the perfect space for slumber – dark, quiet, not too hot, and with a drop of lavender on your pillow for its calming properties.

There’s good news too and it involves chocolate and wine

Treat yourself to chocolate containing at least 70 per cent cocoa to reap the antioxidant benefits.11

And resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, may have anti-inflammatory effects, so enjoy in moderation (but seek medical advice for your condition to find out the amount, if any, is appropriate for you).12

2Try a turmeric latte with your brekkie. The curcumin content of turmeric is poorly absorbed, so combine turmeric in a healthy fat like milk to enhance its absorption.

Set a morning routine that includes stretching and meditation (in the shower is a good time). Mindfulness, meditation, yoga and tai chi can all help you relax, and a simple yogic breathing technique —pranayama— is scientifically proven to lower stress-related inflammation in the body.9

3Listen to some music or read a book on your commute – no news or social media, this is your time to relax and chill.

A mid-morning green juice of kale, ginger, turmeric, celery, cucumber and parsley will give you a pick-me-up bursting with some great inflammation-busting nutrients.

45 A light and healthy lunch like

pumpkin soup or salad will dose you up on beta-cryptoxanthin, another anti-inflammatory.10

Drinks lots of fresh, filtered water – good old H20 flushes out toxins so make sure you properly hydrate throughout the day.

Take a break from your desk and walk around the block. Moving more improves muscle strength and mass, which can slow the progression of mild osteoarthritis.

Enjoy dinner filled with Omega-3 fatty acids – think salmon or mackerel, or top your pizza with anchovies and tomatoes (the lycopene boasts impressive anti-inflammatory properties).

7

8Avoid screen time and connect with loved ones – connection and a good belly laugh can decrease stress hormones.

Don’t forget to brush your teeth, brushing and flossing regularly keeps bad bacteria in the mouth from sneaking into your bloodstream and triggering inflammation.

Precisely formulated With quality compounds and botanicals to treat inflammation and pain

Turmeric contains three bioactive compounds called curcuminoids. Studies reveal curcumin to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant however, curcumin alone is not easily absorbed.

Meriva® is a unique, patented curcumin phospholipid with enhanced bioavailabilty, and has been clinically trialled to provide symptomatic relief of mild osteoarthritis symptoms, including pain, inflammation and swelling, and increase joint mobility.14

3 powerful compounds

Natural flavonoids are commonly consumed in foods, teas and wines. Flavonoids from the root of Baical skullcap and the bark of Acacia catechu have long been used in traditional medicine.

Univestin™ is a extract containing these two herbs, with clinical trials revealing its efficacy in reducing pain and improving joint flexibility in mild osteoarthritis of the knees.15

And then there's herbal support

Most products containing curcumin are single ingredient, but a multi-ingredient formulation containing three potent ingredients clinically validated and demonstrated to provide relief against the symptoms of mild osteoarthritis

The combination of Univestin™ and Meriva® may increase the clinical effectiveness seen when each of them is used separately.
