SUMMARY

The Cri Stenden County Bank 8 Trust Company stands on the south side of Military Road near the center o f Marion, Arkansas. Built in 1919, the bui ld ing has served as headquarters f o r f i v e different f i nanc ia l institutions d u r i n g the six decades o f i t s h i s t o r y , and today remains one o f Marion's most prominent landmarks. I t is also s j g n i f i cant a r c h i tectural ly as the f i n e s t local example o f the Neo-Classi cal Revival s ty le and for i t s eloquent use of fine materials.

ELABORATION

The front (north) facade o f t he C r i ttenden County Bank & T rus t Company possesses t h e b i 'I ater ial symmetry and monumental i ty characteri s t i c of the Neo-Cl a s s i cal Revi val . I

Clad i n whi te-paintad limestone, the-facade f s flanked by two fluted Dor i c columns and matching p i l a s t e r s which suppor t a portico spanning the width of t h e facade. The' . heavy a r c h i t r a v e which originally bore the legecd " C r i ttenden County Bank & Trust Co." i s surmounted by an ornamental balustrade. The facade o f the portico i s faced wi th r u s t i c a t e d l imestone and con ta ins two la rge openings. On the r i g h t , a t the top of a flight o f 1 irnestone steps, i s the main entrance w i t h a s ing le wooden door, glazed w i t h one large l i g h t , and flanked by side lights. Two f ixed transoms w i t h s ide I i g h t s are found above. The 1 eft-handed opening 1 s simi 1 i a r l y t reated, except t h a t a three-foot 1 imestone panel forms the si 11 o f the central casement windows.

The e a s t and west facades are, by contrast , qui t e plain. Clad in red brick, the use of stone i s 1irnited.to t h e s i l l s o f - t h e high windows which line the main banking room and the smaller windows to the rear. The rear facade i s similar i n design to the east and west.facades except f o r , a .masonry chimney f l u e and a small wood-frame shed which p ro tec ts a stai rcase t o the basement.

... - . - . . - . - - The interior consists of the main banking room, a rear o f f i ce , restroom, partial basement, and an unf in ished room on the second f l o o r . The main banking room i s entered directly from the f r o n t door and occupies the e n t i r e f ron t two-thirds o f the b u i l d i n g . Div ided into a banking lobby and a tellers area by the original marble tellers' row, the main banking room 1s characterized by f i n e materials and di g n i f i e d C lass ica l d e t a i 1 i ng. The lobby section features p ink marble flooring w i t h a black marble border and base. White marble w a i n s c o d i n g extends t o the s i l l s o f the h igh double-hung windows w i th transoms which extend along b o t h the east and west walls. White plaster walls w i t h rest ra ined Corinthian pilasters extend t o the high plaster c e i 1 ing, w i t h i t s exposed plaster-encased beams. Around t h e c e i 1 i ng runs a plaster cornice w i t h egg and dart moul ding . The three original ce i 1 i n g chandel iers have been replaced wi th flo>rescent 1 i ght f ixtures.

The white marble te7 lers ' row features the original bronze cages and plaques i den t i f y i ng each window" funct ion. Black marble inserts a re set flush w i t h t he wood surface o f the tellers ' counter tops. A t t h e north end, the tel lers row gives way t o a low marble rail and t ranslucent g lass p a r t i t i o n which originally defined the President" and Vice-President's off ices. The f l o o r i n g i n this area i s l inoleum, w i t h a wood base. A
