Animal welfare leaders in New Jersey agree that currently the animals most at risk in NJ shelters are cats and pitbull mix dogs. PFA is taking steps to target these high-risk populations with innovative
programs aimed at reducing shelter intakes by preventing unwanted litters at the source.
Cat Programs:
PFA collaborates with the ASPCA for cat behavior study
PFA is collaborating with the ASPCA to study the behavior of cats during their first three days in a shelter environment. The
goal is to develop a reliable behavioral assessment tool for shelters to determine whether a cat is adoptable and acting fear-
ful (but will come around with time) or if the cat is feral and should be placed in a TNR program. PFA is proud to be involved
with this project.
February was “Beat the Heat” month for cats!
PFA completed just under 750 FREE female cat spays in the month of February—550 as part of a grant from PetsMart
Charities and 200 funded by donations from supporters like you!! If you add in the male cats, PFA altered almost 1200 all
together. In one month, we have prevented millions of cats and kittens from being euthanized in NJ shelters in the future.
Spay Day 2012, Free Feral Cat Day
Dr. Sarah Barnes of Eleos Vet generously volunteered her time along with PFA veterinarians Dr. Iris Biely, Dr. Laurie Heeb,
Dr. Faith Perrin and Dr. Peter DiGeronimo to provide even more FREE spays and neuters for feral cats on February 26th to
celebrate HSUS's World Spay Day. PFA staff, TNR advocates and other volunteers provided support for this effort to alter 80
cats in one day.
Pitbull Programs:
Itty Bitty Pitty
Through a grant from Pitbull Rescue Central, PFA is offering 1/2 price surgery for your pitbull puppy! Altering your pittie be-
fore the age of 6 months is critical to reap the most health benefits and to prevent accidental litters. Funds are limited—call
for your appointment today!
Primp your Pit in August 2012
PetsMart Charities is sponsoring $20 spay/neuter for your pitbull in August. Primp your Pit for just $20 (includes nail trim).
Limited availability so call today!!
$50 off your pit spay/neuter
