A totally different sale than last week and the May Anniversary sale lived up to its
reputation for a quality turnout. Today’s judge was John Dodgson who had an easy
start with the non-registered class, but a ring full of quality pedigree heifers took a bit
more sorting. It is fair to say that all 12 heifers deserved to be in the show and the
winner was Jeremy Taylor with Robin Cowgill in second place.
A top price of £2250 came for W A Booths Melody heifer which caught the eye of
local breeder Will Oldfield. Next in line was Jeremys 3rd prize heifer going to Ted
Walton at £2220.
A New Calved cow from Frank and Ruth Coar just topped the £2000 mark to WTC
Farms
The biggest improvement was for second quality heifers which were £200 dearer on
the week.
The youngstock sale again attracted buyers looking for goods to turnout. The
highlight was a pen of quality Feb born heifer calves from Ed Towers which traded to
a top of £440 with most over the £400 mark.
NEXT WEEK is regular sale week with entries from A Wensley and four from
Jeremy Taylor plus four in calf from Mike Broadley.

A very good trsde for all breeds without there being any ‘show stoppers!’ Blue bulls
topped at £428 from Messrs Bowker. Plenty just shy of £400. Blue heifer sold to
£400 from Messrs Graves. Several above £300. Simmental bulls from Richard
Parsons sold for £370 and £365 and his heifers aid even better at £395 and £360 to
a new customer. Limousins were just as good to sell, bulls to £388 and heifers to
£312.
Twenty two Angus bulls ranged widely from £70-£382. £330 from David Coulthurst
for an exceptional young model and plenty of choice either side of £250. Angus
heifers sold to £312 for a proper ‘cow maker’ but plenty of choice either sider of £200
for a straight type.
The black and white bulls were well bid for. Proper black sorts £190 x2, £162, £125,
£122, £110, £105 and an overall average of £78 for all types including bobbies.
NEXT WEEK we would anticipate an entry exceeding 200 followed by the
Anniversary Show and Sale of Stirk sponsored by PVDobson, Skipton. Stirk will be
sold in the bottom ring and not before 12.30pm. Stirks consist of dairy bred
continentals, black and white bull and steers and smarter suckler bred types. We
usually say generally in the 6-9 month age bracket. However, now we are down in
the bottom ring, we can handle a little bit livelier and a touch older.
Please also remember Monday is a bank holiday and catalogue and penning by
Tuesday lunchtime; “so give us a call – we have customers for all creatures
great and small!!”

Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick Clerk: Annis Schofield 682 Breeding Sheep comprising 267 ewes with 415 lambs. Trade was mixed, but so were the goods on offer! Top pen today was £228 for well grown continental shearlings with twin Texel x lambs. Mule shearlings with twins all sold £172-£178. Correct continental ewes with twins topped at £188. Plenty of straight double outfits could be bought either side of £150. A handful of hogg’s today topped at £150 twice for Mules with singles. Next Saturday 11th May is our main Mule day. The broken mouth and aged sheep were not the trade they have been in the past few weeks, as there are more outfits around, buyers can afford to be choosey. We look forward now to our May Anniversary Show & Sale next Saturday for ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot. We have several batches entered and remind you that Monday is a bank holiday, so please let us have your entries before Tuesday lunch time for the catalogue and penning. We have the annual production sale of 70 Beltex sheep from A L Thompson, Foulridge and others include from Harry Wood, Dutton.

174 calves today and a super trade throughout. 36 Blue bulls topped at 3555 for a
quartet of stronger s month old calves from Alan Bowker. Younger calves topped at
£485 and a further 10 bulls above £400: £480, £452, £448, £440, £432, £430, £425,
£418, £415 & £405 and an overall average of £350. 33 blue heifers topped at £428
from Merrs Jackson, followed by a trio again from Alan Bowker at £420 and a further
15 heifers above £300: £398, £395 x 3, £375, £365, £360, £355 x 3, £352, £345,
£340, £330, £320 and an overall average of £315.
Other Continentals, the Simmentals, Charolais and Limousins were just as good to
sell, both bulls and heifers. The Angus bulls varied widely from a stomping sort at
£428 down to a little tot at £100 and everything else in between. The same
statement for the heifers ranging between £290 down to £110 – something for
everyone. Please remember next Thursday is our Anniversary Calf Show and we
hope to have a fantastic entry of quality TB4 calves for sale.
Down to the bottom ring for the Anniversary Show and Sale of 202 Stirks and Young
Store Cattle. It really is a far safer ring to sell in than after the calves. Thanks to all
the yard staff for working so hard. We had a packed audience and a super trade for
all the goods on offer, which ranged from black and white bulls and steers to dairy
cross continentals to suckler bred cattle, which were kindly sponsored by PV Dobson
Tractors and judged by father and son, Ken and Martin Throup, Silsden, who
awarded as follows:
Top price at £935 was the 1st prize heifer and reserve champion, a blue x at 7months
old from DM & RE Capstick. There really was something for everyone. Shorter term
keep goods to summer grazers. Come and have a look in a fortnight – you never
know, you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised!!
We now look forward to a busy day this Saturday including the Anniversary Shows of
Pigs, Store, Breeding Cattle and Stock bulls, Hoggs and Ewes with lambs at foot with
the much anticipated Annual Production Sale of Beltex Sheep from Anthony
Thompson, Foulridge.

Pig Auctioneer – Jack Pickup
May Anniversary Show and Sale today. Not as many weaners forward today however there was still a flying trade. Top call was for a pen of Gloucester cross gilts selling for £45 to Thornton Hall Country Park.
Prime pigs were definitely out in force today and they met a first class trade. Topping the prime pigs was a pair of Pietrains from Richard Haworth these pigs took second prize in the pre-sale Show and they sold away to a cracking price of £120 to loyal supporter Steven Taylor. The next call was for the first prize in the pen of Prime Pigs this time a pair of gilts from the same home, they sold away for £120, again to S Taylor.
The overall Champion of the day was for the first prize Breeding Pig. This was a pure bred Pietrain Boar at just 12month sold for £160 to the judge Alan Bancroft.
Thanks again to judge Alan Bancroft Thornton for doing a super job.

Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick Clerk: Annis Schofield
LET’S CALL TODAY ‘SUPER SATURDAY’! We started the hoggs and lambs at foot in the bottom ring at 10.30am. The show was kindly sponsored by Pendle Sharpening Shed and judged by J Finlayson Jnr. Bradley’s Jeremy Maude was awarded 1st and 2nd prizes in the Mule class which went on to sell for £195 and £188. Father and son team Raymond and Robert Johnson, Felliscliffe, took the yellow rosette and their 3rd prizers sold for £182. Trade was bouyant throughout with plenty of customers for them and many more Mules and Texels could have been sold. In the Continental hogg class Skipton man John Stapleton’s powerful Texels took first and third prize and sold for £232 and £225. It was the 2nd placed pen from Bowland Farms, Stonyhurst whose smart Continentals went on to sell for the top price of £238 twice. We had a handful of goats again topping at £300 for a Pygmy nanny with a billy and nanny kids. Up to the top yard for the ewes and lambs. The show was kindly sponsored by James Tatham Clipping Services and thanks to Ian Lancaster for stepping in at the last minute to judge. First prize in the native class with a pen of Mule shearlings was John Lancaster, Bordley which sold for £182. Frank Ainsworth, Rossendale took the blue rosette in the natives with Masham 3-4 crops which sold for £166. LJ Penter, Littondale’s Easycares took 3rd prize and sold for £148. In the Continental class it was Anthony Thompson, Foulridge who claimed 1st and 2nd with Beltex shearlings and lambs at £375 and £300 respectively and Chris Craven’s Suffolk x 3-crop ewes took 3rd prize and sold for £176. All in all, we had a good trade throughout. Commercial sheep with lambs were a much improved trade on the week.
The much anticipated annual sale of Beltex sheep and lambs from Anthony Thompson attracted plenty of interest. Top price achieved was £600 with a Black Beltex shearling and single gimmer lamb. Outfits from the same home with single ram lambs were generally £450-£520. A Beltex shearling with twins from Stuart Currie, Rathmell sold for £325. Harry Wood, Dutton topped at £430 with a reciprient Cheviot x Texel shearling with pure Beltex twin lambs. We had customers for all classes of sheep from the very best to aged outfits bought to eat off the Spring grass. Remember, we have sheep and lambs again next Saturday 18th and would ask vendors to ring the office with entries for penning and catalogue by Tuesday lunchtime. Finally, thanks to all the yard staff on such a busy day.

A mixed show of milkers met a mixed trade, but as always quality animals sold well.
Kendal farmer David Knowles took a top prize of £2120.00 for a non-pedigree 30 litre
heifer going to Evie Gibbons. Craven farmer Richard Close turned out a 6g milky
heifer that shot to £1960.00. The pedigree section was not a vintage show and to be
fair the two best heifers were declared as slow milkers and weren’t eligible for the
show. The winner was a very correct smaller heifer from Philip Halhead selling to
Dave Coulthurst at £1750. A true British Friesian bull from Andrew Jennings went to
Horsfields at Sunnybank for £1400.00. The youngstock sale could only be described
as a huge success, especially for a pen of 10 heifers from Sam and Emma Wilkinson
selling to £470.00 with all of them over £300.
Many thanks to Holstein UK, Cogent Breeding and Jamesons Feeds
for todays sponsorship
NEXT WEEK is a regular sale with 25-30 head.

With silaging in full swing the number of calves forward for our Anniversary show was
not as high, as was expected. Kindly sponsored by Genus, the show was judged by
Chris Baxter who awarded the Champion to the first prize British Blue bull from F & S
Faud & Son. This nine week old Genus sired calf went on to sell for £525. Second
and third placed Blue bulls from Messrs Vickery and Starkie sold for £425 and £415
respectively. The highest price bull of the day, too old for the show, was a February
born suckler bred, bucket reared Blue bull from Stephen and Tracey Fawcett which
sold for £575. Plenty of others in the £400-£450 bracket.
In the non Blue bull class first prize was awarded to a Simmental from Roger Vickery.
This calf took the Reserve Championship too and later sold for £455. Second prize a
Bazadaise from Joe Pemberton made £415 and third prize a seven week old
Limousin from Wins Horsfield sold for £320. In the Blue heifer class red and blue
rosettes were claimed by Pauline Anderton and yellow went to Messrs Baldwin. Not
as much strength generally, but plenty above £300. In a nutshell, short of numbers
today but certainly not short of trade!
We would expect twice as many calves next week followed by stirks in the bottom
ring. We have several batches of suckler and dairy cattle booked in already and
would ask for further entries by Tuesday for the catalogue. Thanks.

Calf & Stirk Auctioneer Rachel Capstick. Auctioneer’s Clerk: Anna Robinson
With still a lot of grass cut silage, we were not quite as busy as expected, but
nonetheless 121 calves sold to (as predicted) a fantastic trade.
Blue bulls topped at £550 from JC Lees, a trio from Alan Bowker at £520 plenty of
younger models in the £400 - £495 bracket.
Other continentals just as good to sell, as were the Angus and Herefords. Those
better types of black and whites were good to sell topping at £140 for a young calf
from Michael Fish.
161 stirks turned up un the bottom building and were also very good to sell. From
smarter suckler bred types, to dairy cross continentals to the usual selection of black
and white bulls and steers. We didn’t quite reach £800, but topped at £790 for an
8month old Limousin bull. Anything to turn out for summer attracted fast and furious
bidding. If you haven’t yet tried our fortnightly Thursday sale we look forward to
welcoming you on 6th June. We have customers for all creatures great and small
and now we are in the bottom ring it is much safer and we can handle the more
‘spirited’ sorts!

plenty of 40-44kg hoggs in the mid 80’s.
Ewes were also met with a strong trade, best ewes to £98 for a pair of continental
ewes. Horned ewes up to £52 for Swaledales and Mules £65-£75
More sheep needed every week to meet buyers demand

Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick Clerk: Annis Schofield 577 breeding sheep comprising 238 outfits of sheep with 339 lambs. To be fair as the season gets towards the end, we didn’t have the same quality, so not the £200+ outfits compared to last week. Top today was Roy Canning with Texel x Shearlings with twins at £192 and John Lancaster with Mule Shearlings and twins at £170. Correct ewes with twins could
generally be bought just shy of £50/life with young lambs. Correct ewes with singles were sold to a high of £152 for Beltex ewes with strong smart lambs from Ian Daggett (£76/life). The single outfits generally had much stronger lambs on and plenty sold in that £120-£140 bracket. Ian Daggett also topped the broken with twin section with Suffolks at £160. John Neary’s pen of Texel ewes with strong singles sold for £132 (£66/life). A nice selection of Hoggs and good to welcome new vendors to Gisburn. Mark Wilson had Suffolks with singles at £168. Raymond and Robert Johnson had Mules away at the same price and Jeremy Maude Texel x at £170. Goats finished the sale. Pygmy nanny kids sold to £220! A Guernsey with single £205 and Boers to £215.
The sale concluded 12.10am. #GETINGETONGETHOME!
Remember we will now sell sheep with lambs at foot only on a fortnightly basis. We have several outfits booked in already for 8th June.
