CANYON COUNTY
Canyon County is Idaho’s second most populous county with 207,478 residents. It is the seventh smallest county geographically. It lies within the Boise metro area and combined with Ada County, Idaho’s largest county, the population is almost 642,000. Many people are drawn to Canyon County by lower housing prices and a rural life style within commuting distance of jobs in Ada County. The population grew 43,531, or 27 percent, from 2005 to 2015. Growth remained robust over the past year at 2.2 percent after posting 2 and 2.6 percent growth in each of the previous two years.
The Canyon County civilian labor force exhibited strong growth throughout the past decade, increasing by 12,026, or 15 percent since 2005. By 2005, the county had started reaping the benefits of the housing boom and accompanying commercial construction. That drove the unemployment rate to record lows in 2006 before the recession dealt a blow to the county in the second half of 2008. The housing bubble, which fueled the expansion, had burst. The unemployment rate added 2.8 points from 2007 to 2008, then shot up to 11.3 percent in 2009 and remained there through 2010. 2011 saw the first unemployment rate decline since the recession, dropping to 10.6 percent. The county has since continued to recover, with the rate dropping to just under 5 percent in 2015. As part of the Canyon County’s robust recovery, the county has added 2,344 jobs in 2015. The leaders were other services, which added 432 jobs, and construction, which added 401 jobs.
Despite commuters who work in neighboring Ada County, Canyon County ranked 42nd in per capita income. 2014 showed some improvement, up $695 to $26,968. This puts the county at only 73 percent of state per capita income and a paltry 59 percent of national per capita income. Average wages range from $13,481 in the leisure and hospitality sector to $44,549 in financial activities, only 3 percent are employed in this sector. Most jobs are in manufacturing, retail and wholesale trade and government.
