FOR JOHN HEWITT

A jutting bearded profile, ready for a fight, puritan, pontifical and usually right.

Captain McWhirr of Ulster as you flowered, as you aged,

competent, impotent while the tycoon raged.

What foul business was it sent you to Coventry?

Or was it a hidden blessing, John, to get away?

A protestant Prospero who, of course, abjured

magic of any sort, you leave

the island uncured,

the old dogs still in office.

Although your gifts were ample what can we say you left us? A map, an example.

Your work is alive and kicking in our heads and hearts.

After a life of service

your body is spare parts.

James Simmons, September 1987
