‧ 5 year grade in Architecture major(department of Architecture & Architectural Engineering) should

pay 3,037,000 KRW for a tuition fee.

Tuition PaymentTuition fees are normally paid twice a year before the beginning of each semester. First semester (spring semester) registration takes place at the end of February, and Second semester (fall semester) registration takes place at the end of August of each year. Specific due dates will be posted on the university website. University policy states that students are responsible for their own tuition bill. This responsibility includes reviewing tuition fees statements online (http://snuhaksa.snu.ac.kr/sdj/Sdjfront.jsp?lang_cd=ENG ) and making sure that tuition fees are paid by the due date. The University may deny registration to those students whose bills are not paid by the established deadline.

Paying at on-campus banksStudents can visit the banks on campus [Nong-Hyup(농협), Shin-Han Bank(신한은행), and Woori Bank(우리은행)] and pay their tuition fees by providing the teller with their name and student ID number. Note that bank working hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 ~ 16:00.

Paying at off-campus banksStudents who wish to pay their tuition fees off-campus can visit any bank, including the post office, credit unions and the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (KFCC). However, students must bring their tuition fees statement which can be printed out from the university website at http://snuhaksa.snu.ac.kr/sdj/Sdjfront.jsp?lang_cd=ENG. Please download file 1 to see detailed procedures from the example.

Using virtual account serviceVirtual account service is a simplified money transfer method that enables tuition payment and verification of the sender. Students can pay their tuition fees using virtual account service via an ATM, Internet banking, or telephone banking with the exception of newly admitted graduate students. After creating a university account at Nong-Hyup(농협) or Shinhan Bank(신한은행), each student will receive a unique account number to which his or her tuition can be transferred. Each student’s virtual account number is shown on their tuition fees statement.

Please download file 2 to see detailed procedures for using ATMs.

Grading Scale and Grade Point AverageGrades for courses in the undergraduate/graduate program are determined based on an overall evaluation of Students’ test scores, assignment, attendance, and class participation. Grade points correspond with the grading scale as follows.

Withdrawal from Courses Note that you can withdraw a course with permission from the professor teaching the course (until the end of the second quarter of the semester without limitation as to the number of course) and the grade of a withdrawn course is not included in the grade point average: student will receive a “w”[withdrawal] on their transcripts instead.(※ If the student would like to withdraw from a course with inevitable circumstance after the end of the second quarter of the semester, he or she should not take the exam. However, in this case certificates verified by some public organization are required. (ex. medical certificate)

Academic WarningStudents will be placed on Warning if he or she receives F grades on 3 courses or more or 6 credits and lower than a grade point average of 1.7 during one semester. In this case, course credits can be restricted.

16

Academic DismissalAn academic policy geared towards inspiring student work ethic and in turn promoting an environment conducive to learning through strict observance of grade point average limits, where students that fall below the established limit will be dismissed from their registered program. Student seeking a bachelor's degree may be dismissed from their degree program in the event that they receive 4 warnings. Student status may be maintained only under specific circumstances recognized by the committee, and any further warnings received thereafter will result in immediate dismissal.○ Students who receive a total of 4 warnings are subject to dismissal.

Make-up Courses Students are allowed to retake courses when they receive less than a C+ for a course. When students retake the same course several times, they will earn credit through the grade obtained from the latest course taken and the repeat status of the course will be indicated on the academic transcript.

How to seek SNU Transfer CreditTransfer credits are admitted by the Evaluation Committee of respective departments. For more details, please inquire to each department’s office directly.

Summer/Winter Session for enrolled undergraduates and graduates Summer/Winter sessions are distinct sessions from the spring/fall semesters. They only open during the vacation for undergraduate and graduate students. The maximum attainable credits are 9 credits for the summer session and 6 credits for the winter session. All credits taken will be included in the credit requirements for both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Leave of Absence

When students want to take a leave of absence due to personal circumstances or any other reason, they will need to fill in the electronic form on the portal website, http://my.snu.ac.kr, and send it electronically. ※ If you take a leave of absence during the semester, your grades will be cancelled.

DurationA general leave of absence automatically expires after 2 semesters (except in the case of Military Service Leave of Absence and others specified), and the minimum length of a leave of absence is one semester. The aggregate term of absence cannot exceed six semesters for undergraduates, four semesters for graduate students in a master’s program, and six semesters for students in a doctoral program. You will be dismissed from the school if you exceed these time allotments. Depending on the reason for your leave, the period specified in the regulations can be extended. If you fail to register before the given due date it will also result in dismissal. Students who wish to leave the University permanently must report to the dean.

17

Tuition RefundsIf you apply to take a leave of absence before the registration period, you need not pay tuition for the semester. However, in the event that you wish to take a leave of absence after the registration period is over, you must attach relevant documents proving your valid reason. Acceptable reasons are limited to mandatory military service (Korean Armed Forces) and severe health problems. The administration office, after screening the submitted documents, will approve your request if they feel the reason presented is valid. The paid tuition fees will not be refunded in cash, but will be transferred to the next semester you will be enrolling.

Leave of absence ProcedureApply for the leave of absence in the portal website ⟶ Admission head of department(or advisor)⟶ Submit to the department’s office ⟶ Admission of leave of absence by dean of Engineering

Valid Reasons for Requesting LeaveThe validity of reasons for requesting leave is quite flexible, and all reasonable requests will be approved. However, there are a limited number of reasons acceptable for extending your total number of semesters of possible leave. Serving for the Korean Armed Forces (Mandatory Service) is one, and the other is leave due to serious illness or surgery. If you are required to serve in the military of your nation during your enrollment in the University, you must submit an application along with a copy of the enlistment notice. Within 6 months of being enlisted in the army, you need to submit documents proving your service in the military.

Leave due to mandatory military service will not be included as general leave but as a separate Military Service Leave of Absence period. Similar procedures should be followed to request leave due to health reasons. You will need to submit a diagnostic report from a doctor, or otherwise prove that you will be needing hospital treatment and that you will not be able to carry out academic activities for the semester. Along with the Military Leave of Absence, leave due to these reasons will extend your total semesters of possible leave to the number of semesters that you must take leave.

Returning to SchoolIf you are currently on leave of absence, expelled or removed from the register, it is necessary for you to undertake specific procedures in order to re-register. Returning to school will require either: a) simple re-registering, b) reversion, c) reinstatement or d) readmission. You can only be reinstated or readmitted once during your enrollment. If you were removed from the register because of disciplinary measures, exceeding the maximum number of terms or expulsion, you do not qualify for readmission.

Simple re-registering (Returning Studcents)You fall into this category if you are returning from a General Leave of Absence.

ReversionYou fall into this category if you are returning from a Leave of Absence taken after the registration period. You will be exempt from paying tuition for your returning semester as you

Reinstatement You fall into this category if you were dismissed due to not registering without taking a leave of absence. Reinstatement must take place within one year of your dismissal, and is only possible if the department that you wish to enter has extra space.

ReadmissionYou fall into this category if you were either expelled or dismissed from the school for reasons other than not registering. You are permitted to re-register only if the department you wish to enter has extra space.

Leaving from SNUIf you would like to leave SNU, you should write the reason with your and a guarantor’s joint signatures, which should be approved by both dean of the college of engineering and the president of Seoul National university.

available in both Korean and English. There are several ways to contact the Division of Educational Affairs to request a certificate: visiting in person, via e-mail or postal mail, or through automated issuance machines situated around the campus. Currently, SNU does not offer online request services, so requests from outside of Korea must be submitted via e-mail or post.

There are three ways of submitting a request when you need a certificate issued. Visiting the Office in PersonApplicants may directly visit the Division of Educational Affairs in the Administration Building (Bldg. 60) to submit a request for certificates. If applicants are not able to visit the office, requests may be submitted by someone else, but the agent must carry a letter of attorney (no specific format required, but must include applicant’s hand-written signature) and a copy of the applicant’s photo ID. Business hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 to 18:00, except holidays.

Using Automated Issuance MachinesAutomatic issuance services are available for students of SNU who entered after 1981. The automated machines are located all around the campus. They are usually available from 9:00 to 22:00, but operating hours may vary upon location. Both Korean and English versions of certificates are available, for 300 KRW and 600 KRW respectively. If you need to have certificates sealed, visit the Division of Educational Affairs with the issued certificates. The machines are located at the College of Humanities (Bldg. 6, 1st floor), College of Engineering (Bldg. 39, 1st floor; Bldg. 301, 2nd floor), College of Business Administration (Bldg. 58, 1st floor), Doore Cultural Center (Bldg. 67, 2nd floor), Gwanaksa (Bldg. 900, 1st floor), and the Administration Building (Bldg. 60, 1st floor).

Submitting a Request via E-mail or PostIf applicants reside outside of Korea or find it inconvenient to visit the University in person, he/she may submit a request for certificates via e-mail or post. Although requests can be sent by e-mail, the certificates themselves will be sent to the applicant via postal mail only. Applicants should e-mail the office at [email protected] or send a request by mail including the required information as listed below. For verification purposes, a request acceptance notification e-mail will be sent to you within 48 hours. The e-mail will also state the appropriate amount of payment, depending on shipping and handling costs.
