That is where Islington is head ed now and she is likely to start favourite on the day, being quoted at 3-1 after this effort by Coral Eurobet. She is clearly on the upgrade, having finished fifth in a Newmarket maiden on her debut in August before finishing a head and a half length third behind Protectress (GB) and Snowfire (GB) in the Listed Oh So Sharp S. at Newmarket last October. That race ap- peared one of the most competitive races for two-year- old fillies run last year and she confirmed that impres- sion when beating subsequent Chester maiden scorer Fragrant View in a Newbury maiden Apr. 19. Yester- day, she was kept to the rail in third early, racing keenly as Half Glance (GB) (Danehill) was taken to the front. After settling his filly under cover, Kieren Fallon’s major concern was racing room as Frankie Dettori kept him pinned to the fence on the smooth-traveling Frau- lein (GB) (Acatenango {Ger}). When the gap came en- tering the straight, Islington was pointed at it and she showed impressive acceleration to pick up the long-time leader with three furlongs remaining. Lengthening into the clear, she was pushed along from there to maintain her advantage as Jamie Spencer made considerable inroads into her lead on Spinnette (Ire) (Spinning World). Fallon, winning his second Musidora, following subsequent Epsom Oaks winner Reams of Verse in the 1997 renewal, explained: “We’ve gone three out which is too far--I wanted to wait until I was inside the two but when the gap came I had to take it--she’s a dream ride and she has a good turn of foot. She’s sharpened up a lot since her win at Newbury, but I didn’t want it to turn into a sprint--she’d done well to do it the way she’s done it.” Stoute added: “I felt that Kieren kicked a little earlier than he would have wanted and she’s still a little bit unprofessional and babyish, so wasn’t doing a lot in front. She just looks around a little bit and has spooked before, but she’s gradually growing up. She’ll have to improve again, but she’s progressing and going the right way--we can go there with a little bit of hope.” DERBY WINNER WORKS War Emblem (Our Emblem) worked an easy five fur- longs at Churchill Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s GI Preakness S. The Derby winner completed the work in 1:03.20 over a fast track. Clockers caught the colt in frac- tions of :25, :37.40 and :50.40. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:16.20 with exercise rider Dana Barnes in the irons. “I just wanted to sort of breeze around there, just to take a little bit of the edge off him,” explained trainer Bob Baffert. “He’s going to be flying tomorrow [Wednes- day] and he’s never flown before, so I didn’t want him too high to get on that plane. And I didn’t want to excite him too much and go too fast. Basically, that’s the kind of horse he is. He doesn’t need to do a lot because he gets a lot out of his gal- lops. Every horse is different.” Others On the Work Tab... Also working yesterday at Churchill, Harlan’s Holiday (Harlan) drilled four furlongs in :48.20 with jockey Tony D’Amico up. “It was solid,” trainer Ken McPeek said of the work. “That’s the horse. I think we got a little fancy in the last breeze before the Derby. Maybe we should have given him a sharp one and popped him away from there when the gates opened, but hindsight’s 20-20. I can see clearly now.” Booklet (Notebook) worked four furlongs at Churchill yesterday in :48.60 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.60. New jockey Pat Day was up for the work. “This is the first time Pat Day’s been on him, so all I wanted to do was mainly let Pat push all the buttons, flip all the switches and see what he was going to be riding so there weren’t any surprises Saturday at Pimli- co. This horse has got some idiosyncracies about him and Pat was able to probably feel and see all of them, so I think we’re set up fairly well.” For information, call (732) 747-8060. After finishing unplaced in a Yarmouthmaiden in September, he contested a seven-furlongLeicester conditions event, where he was beaten 1 1/4lengths by the smart Lunar Sovereign. WEEKEND PEDIGREEPERSPECTIVES

by Alan PorterINFECTION SIDELINES TAKE CHARGE LADY Take Charge Lady (Dehere) will miss Friday’s GIIBlack-Eyed Susan with a slight lung infection. Afterthe three-year-old filly blew out three furlongs Tues-day at Churchill in :35, a routine medical examinationrevealed the infection. “She worked good and shefeels good,” said trainer Ken McPeek. “She’s fine andshe didn’t cough once. She’s got some mucous inher chest and we just need to get it dried up.”

FIGHT YOUR CORNER SOLD Trainer Mark Johnston yesterday confirmed thatSheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum had pur-chased Fight Your Corner (GB) (Muhtarram) for anundisclosed sum. Having won last Tuesday’s G3Chester Vase in course record time, the three-year-old was being pointed for the G1 Prix du Jockey Club(French Derby) at Chantilly June 2 as he did not holdan entry for the G1 Epsom Derby June 8. Fight YourCorner will now run in the colors of Sheikh Moham-med’s son Sheikh Hamdan, whose Millennium Dragon(GB) scored at Newmarket last weekend, and willremain with Johnston for at least the remainder ofthis season.

Nonsuch Bay has spent most of her short career intough spots. She didn't see a racecourse until January20 this year, when she won a maiden special weightcontest at Gulfstream Park. After adding an allowancewin at the same venue, she contested the GII BonnieMiss S., and finished second, dividing the winner DustMe Off and Belterra, in a race run in stakes-record time.Shipped to New York for the GIII Comely S., NonsuchBay ran into another buzzsaw, and finished a distantthird to one of the nation's best three-year-old filliesBella Bellucci. In the GII Nassau Breeders' Cup S. Nonsuch Bayfaced a field which included Infinite Spirit, conqueror ofchampion two-year-old filly Tempera in this year's UAE1000 Guineas, the unbeaten Wilzada and Lethal Tem-per, the highly thought of Wopping, and her GulfstreamPark conqueror, Dust Me Off. Trainer Frank Alexanderwanted Nonsuch Bay close to the pace, but in the earlystages the still relatively inexperienced filly resentedgetting dirt in her face and drifted back to seventh, some eight lengths off pacesetting Wilzada. Sent insidein the stretch, Nonsuch Bay charged between Wilzadaand Wopping in the closing strides to get up by a noseover Wopping, with Wilzada just a half-length back inthird. The first two are expected to renew their rivalryin the G1 Acorn S. at Belmont Park June 7. Cont. p. 6

SECOND-CROP EURO SIRES FIRE With the French and English Guineas now in thehistory books, what already looked like a good group ofsires is looking even better. This group was among fouron whom we ran tables in our May 1 edition (p. 8-9),and was then headed by Royal Applause, DanehillDancer, and Spinning World, but it's been from thesecond five from that table--Zamindar, Alhaarth, andSingspiel--who supplied last weekend's fireworks. But first...another word about Danehill, who endedup as Andrew Caulfield's Selected, as he detailed, froma lot of choices for his column yesterday. Alreadychampion sire in Australia five times and champion sireof two-year-olds in Britain and Ireland the last twoyears, he is now looming up alongside Sadler's Wells asEurope's top sire. Not only did he have this tremendousEnglish-French 2000 Guineas double compliments oftwo of those top two-year-olds from last year, Rock ofGibraltar and Landseer, but he's also got the four-year-old filly Aquarelliste, second in the Arc to Sakhee lastyear, and already winner of the G1 Prix Ganay thisterm. He is on fire, the unfortunate loss of Mozart not-withstanding.

Second-Crop Sires in Europe... Back to business...European second-crop sires. Thebiggest win fell to Zafonic's younger brother (you can'tsay ‘little brother,’ he's 16.3), Zamindar (by GoneWest). He was not so good a racehorse as Zafonic, who was a superstar, but displayed plenty of abilitynonetheless. Like Zafonic bred by Prince Khalid andtrained by Andre Fabre, Zamindar ran four times at twoin 1996, winning his maiden and the G3 Prix deCabourg (6f), and placing in two Group 1s, second toBahamian Bounty in the six-furlong Morny and thirdbehind Revoque in the seven-furlong Salamandre. Fabrebrought him over for the English 2000 for his first start

at three, and he was an arguably unlucky three-lengthfifth behind Entrepreneur. That was about it. He rantwo more times, but cut no ice. He went to stud atBanstead, but transferred to Marablue Farm in Floridafor the 2001 breeding season, just as he was about tohave runners. Up until last weekend, he was a goodsixth among this group, with 14 winners, including theuseful 2001 Listed SW Lipstick. He's in the top fivenow, after the canny J. Gosden produced Zenda, undera fine, front-running ride by Prince Khalid's stable jock,Richard Hughes, to hold off Firth of Lorne (by someunknown, Danehill) and Sophisticat in the French 1000.It was a very fast time, and you wouldn't be confidentof calling it a front-running fluke until we see whathappens in the Coronation at Royal Ascot, which latelyhas been settling the issue of who is the top three-year-old mile filly in Europe each year. So, a major credibilityboost for Zamindar.

Alhaarth’s Feat... Barely less impressive was the double scored by1995 European champion two-year-old Alhaarth, whohad the winners of both the Lingfield Derby Trial (G3)and the Lingfield Oaks Trial (L) last Saturday, both runat 11 ½ furlongs. Derby Trial winner Bandari, one of apassel of big three-year-old winners lately for trainerMark Johnston, was hugely impressive, winning by 13lengths, and he would be third favorite for the EpsomDerby (behind Hawk Wing and High Chaparral) if he'dbeen entered. He could still be supplemented for£90,000, but the trainer rightly considers that's rathera big bet to make. He is Alhaarth's third Group 3 win-ner (Oaks Trial winner Birdie is his fourth SW), follow-ing Nell Gwyn winner Misterah last month and lastyear's Cornwallis winner, Dominica. Considering theCornwallis is at five furlongs and the Nell Gwyn sevenfurlongs, Alhaarth is looking very good on the versatilityscale. This horse, by Northern Dancer's last sire son toway outsire his race record, Unfuwain, is in the processof making an excellent start.

Singspiel Rising... Still in the second five, as of today, but poised toblast off, is Singspiel. No less than a half brother toRahy (and champion South African sire Rakeen), Sing-spiel's not been getting many calls among this group sofar. With a crop of fewer than 40 named foals, it'sbeen taking a while for things to happen; but that's allabout to change. On Sunday Singspiel colts ran secondin the G1 Prix Lupin (Secret Singer, behind FrenchDerby favorite Act One, who is by Singspiel's sire, Inthe Wings) and in the G3 Derrinstown Derby (In Time'sEye gave High Chaparral plenty to think about). Andtoday, Godolphin's Moon Ballad, fourth to Essence ofDubai in the G2 UAE Derby and a nose second in theNewmarket S. (L) at the Guineas meeting, has a realchance in the G2 Dante. They're all three 10-furlongthree-year-old colts, and they are saying, “Wake up.Here comes Singspiel.” But there's another statistic from the last threeweeks which suggests to me that, ultimately, the verybest sire of this very good group is going to be Spin-ning World, who I now think will be the best sire son ofNureyev since Theatrical. I know, I know. He's benefit-ted from the Coolmore 'overpower them with numbers'policy, but even so, he's had nine stakes horses so far, including G3 Craven winner and English 2000 secondfavorite King of Happiness and he's had no fewer than30 individual runners in the last three weeks (NorthernHemisphere only). Five of them won, the best of thosebeing Common World, who won a good nine-furlongthree-year-old handicap at Sandown, and Fomalhaut, ahalf brother to Machiavellian, who won a 5 1/2-furlongconditions race at Chantilly. His latest stakes filly isSpinnette, who ran second to Oaks favorite Islingtonyesterday in the G3 Musidora at York, finishing the racewith one shoe off. One after another by this sire isshowing up in the right kind of places, so I would say itis strictly a matter of time before the right one showsup in the right place at the right time.

(Pedigree Perspectives cont. from p. 3) Nonsuch Bay is a daughter of the Gone West stallion,Mr. Greeley, and the weekend was a good one for sonsof Gone West. In addition to the victory of NonsuchBay, Zenda, from the first crop of Zamindar, won theG1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas)and Maybe Forever, a daughter of Zamindar's brother,Zafonic, captured the G3 Prix de Saint-Georges. Mr. Greeley is a member of Gone West's fourth crop.A winner twice in six starts at two, Mr. Greeley reallybloomed at three. At that age, he took a trio of gradedstakes over six and seven furlongs--the GIII SpectacularBid Breeders' Cup S., GIII Swale S. and GIII LafayetteS.--and was four times graded-stakes placed, confirm-ing his place as one of the best sprinters of his genera-tion when running Desert Stormer to a neck in the GIBreeders' Cup Sprint on his last racecourse appearance. Mr. Greeley retired to stand at Dixiana Farm,Lexington, Kentucky (he moved with the other Dixianastallions and management team to Spendthrift Farm for 2001), at a fee of $10,000, which has now risen to$25,000 for the current season. Like his sire, GoneWest, Mr. Greeley wasn't an instant hit with his firstjuveniles, although 10 of his first crop two-year-oldswere winners. However, that first crop proved theirworth with time, producing four stakes winners, includ-ing the extremely talented El Corredor, winner of fourgraded stakes, including the GI Cigar Mile H., and themultiple-stakes winning and graded-stakes placed LuckyLivi. Mr. Greeley's second crop has so far produced fivestakes winners, and is headlined by Celtic Melody, winner of the GI Humana Distaff S. at Churchill Downson Kentucky Derby day; GII American Derby winner FanClub's Mister; and Reel Buddy, unbeaten in three starts, two in stakes events in England this year, and currentlypointing for the G1 Golden Jubilee S. (formerly Corkand Orrery S.) at Royal Ascot.

Nonsuch Bay and the OBS Championship S. winnerBronze Autumn are stakes winners from Mr. Greeley'sthird crop, which are currently three-year-olds andinclude several impressive maiden special weight andallowance winners. Nonsuch Bay's dam, Brighter ThanGold, is a minor winner by Light Idea. This son of Ma-jestic Light won three of 10 starts, for earnings of$11,284. Standing in Ohio, he has sired 13 crops andjust three stakes winners, the best of which is BrighterThan Gold's full sister, Light's Question, a multiple-stakes winner in restricted Ohio-bred company. Thefemale family hasn't been an exalted one in recentgenerations either, as prior to the appearance ofNonsuch Bay, Light's Question was the only stakeswinner to have been produced by Nonsuch Bay's firstfour dams. We can note, however, that Brighter ThanGold's first foal (Nonsuch Bay is her second), What'sUp Dog, by another Mr. Prospector-line sire, Roy, fin-ished fifth to City Zip, Yonaguska and Macho Uno inthe GI Hopeful S. Nonsuch Bay's pedigree represents a duplication ofRaise a Native in the tail-male line of the sire andbroodmare sire via Raise a Native's very different sons:Mr. Prospector and Majestic Light. This cross has pro-duced at least 18 unrestricted stakes winners, includingtwo-graded scorers by Mr. Greeley's sire, Gone West,as well as Grade I winners Gold Fever and MahoganyHall, and other graded-stakes winners King Cugat,Life's Luck and Petionville. Various forms of Raise aNative duplications also appear in Mr. Greeley stakeswinners El Corredor (who is inbred to Mr. Prospector),Dr. Lewis and Lovewithoutend. Nonsuch Bay's dam is also inbred 3x4 to Hail toReason, with one strain coming through Proud Clarion;a Hail to Reason/Djeddah cross. Hail to Reason alsoturns up in the male-line of Mr. Greeley's stakes win-ners Fan Club's Mister and Bronze Autumn, who is outof a mare by another Hail to Reason/Djeddah cross, Mr.Leader. Hail to Reason is a grandson of Royal Charger,so Proud Clarion and Mr. Leader are bred on very similarlines to Never Bend (by Royal Charger's three-partsbrother, Nasrullah out of a mare by Djeddah). NeverBend appears in three of Mr. Greeley's stakes winners, including his Grade I winners El Corredor and CelticMelody.

WELD TURNS EYE TO EPSOM Dermot Weld may run In Time’s Eye (GB) (Singspiel{Ire}) in the G1 Epsom Derby June 8, Irish Racing onlinerevealed yesterday. Having finished a length second toHigh Chaparral (Ire) in Sunday’s G3 Derrinstown StudDerby Trial at Leopardstown, Paddy Power quoted themaiden at 16-1 for the Epsom Classic. “We are quitehappy with him and we will make a decision aboutEpsom in a fortnight’s time, after the Irish Guineas,”Weld told Irish Racing online. “But the Derby is defi-nitely being considered. He was getting seven poundsfrom the winner, but I thought he ran an excellent race.He will improve for the run, but he was only beaten alength by the Derby favourite, so he won’t have toimprove substantially. He will have learned a lot and heshowed he likes that good ground.” Weld also ex-plained the poor run of Rum Charger (Ire) (Spectrum{Ire}) in Sunday’s G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. “Shewas struck into on both hind legs and she was prettysore afterwards,” he continued. “She even had to bebandaged on the plane coming back. But she is okaynow, and in time we will think of her next race.”

SHAANMER MAY DODGE ACT Connections of Shaanmer (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) arekeen to avoid taking on Act One (GB) (In the Wings{GB}) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby)at Chantilly June 2. Although Andre Fabre’s colt, who was fourth in Sunday’s G1 Poule d’Essai desPoulains (French 2000 Guineas), was muted as anEpsom Derby contender, his run on Sunday sug-gested to connections that he would not handle thetrack there. Fabre explained that he was also keen toavoid Jonathan Pease’s unbeaten colt, telling PASport: “Shaanmer didn’t handle the downhill part ofthe course at Longchamp, so we ruled Epsom outafter Sunday. We were then looking at the JockeyClub instead. However, this isn’t an easy option withserious customers like Act One around. So Shaanmermay instead go for the G1 Prix Jean Prat [June 2].”
