Summer Reading Essay for Incoming 6th Graders at Breed Middle School
Directions: Consider the challenges (struggles) the main character in your book had to overcome. Choose three
examples that demonstrate how the main character overcame these challenges and what happened as a result of
overcoming these challenges. Follow the steps below to write a well-developed essay. This assignment is due FRIDAY,
SEPTEMBER 14.
Steps to Success:
1st Paragraph: Introduce the title and author of the book, as well as the setting and general plot.
2nd Paragraph: Describe one challenge the main character faced, how s/he overcame it, and what happened as a result.
3rd Paragraph: Describe a second challenge the main character faced, how s/he overcame it, and what happened as a
result.
4th Paragraph: Describe a third challenge the main character faced, how s/he overcame it, and what happened as a
result.
5th Paragraph: Conclude your essay by reviewing a lesson that the main character learned as a result of overcoming
these challenges.

book review form. Each review counts as a

Walmart gift card and movie tickets. Check out the weekly
challenges on our teen calendar for extra chances to win a prize.
Return the filled out book review to the teen
center on the third floor. We will call or email if
you have won!
