Campus Welcomes Returning and New Students, Faculty and Staff Seminole State College resi-

dence halls and parking lots were full of students back on campus and ready to start the 2012-13 school year. Classes at the col-lege started Thursday, Aug. 16.

The Housing and Student Ac-tivities Office was busy hosting "welcome week" activities for students living on campus that included a cookout at Henderson Park, “Inflatable Fun” on a two-lane water slide and hypnotist Michael Reeves.

Welcome week activities for the students continued to be host-ed in the evenings with students

being invited to a pool tourna-ment, movie night, swimming pool party and bowling outing.

Students had an opportunity to participate in a welcome week game called “60 seconds” on Monday evening.

The Native Americans Serv-ing Non-Tribal Institutions Pro-gram (NASNTI) sponsored a Campus Photo Scavenger Hunt contest during welcome week activities.

Area Students Participate in SSC Upward Bound Hawaii Trip over summer Seminole State College had six-

teen Upward Bound Bridge stu-dents recently return home from their week-long global studies class trip to Hawaii.

For six weeks, 140 students from Seminole, Pottawatomie, Hughes and Okfuskee counties stayed on the SSC campus as a part of the college’s Upward Bound summer residential program. Sixteen of those were “Bridge” students who were recent high school graduates enrolled in college courses over the summer.

Ending the summer school ses-sion, Bridge students who passed each of their classes with a “B” or better were eligible to partici-pate in the Summer Bridge Global Studies Class. The destination and length of the tour are determined

by the amount of funds raised by the students throughout their four-year association with the program.

The class included coursework at SSC and a one-week trip to Ha-waii where the students learned about Hawaiian culture, history and toured the Hawaii Volcano National Park.

“For most students participating in the program this is their first op-portunity to fly and see the ocean. It’s an opportunity for them to do something they never thought they would be able to do. It has prov-en to be a great retention tool and valuable learning experience for participants,” said Upward Bound I Coordinator Leslie Sewell.

Seminole State Offers eBay Course through Buisness and Industry Seminole State College is offer-

ing a three-week course that will teach participants a simple step-by-step system for selling items on eBay beginning Sept. 11.

In the course participants will learn a simple system for selling items on eBay. Selling on eBay allows anyone to have an instant home business. Participants will learn how to open a seller account, determine the value and price of your treasures, improve your list-ings with effective descriptions and photographs, open a Paypal account and monitor your listings and complete a transaction

Kristi Baily, an eBay education-al specialist and a successful eBay seller, will instruct this course.

Students must have computer knowledge and a current e-mail address. eBay registration re-quires a checking account number and credit card. If students wish to register during class, the men-tioned items must be brought.

The class will meet Sept. 11 through Sept. 27 on Monday eve-nings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in room 117 of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center. The cost for the course is $111.

Back to School Welcome Sacks....

Seminole State College employees Cindy Guinn, Theran Hernan-dez, Karan O’Dor, Rich Thorton, student worker Brittany Owens and Leslie Sewell prepared "Welcome to Seminole" sacks for 250 stu-dents who would be living in campus residence halls this fall. The bags contained snacks, promotional items and coupons from area businesses.

Quinn new head basketball coach Seminole State College recently

announced that Ryan Quinn, current assistant men’s basketball coach, will become the new head coach for the Seminole State College Trojans.

Quinn will take over the SSC program immediately replacing Dr. Tom Mills who has accepted the position of Dean of Instructional Compliance at Seminole State Col-lege.

“Ryan has done an excellent job for us with his duties as the Assis-tant Coach for SSC and has demon-strated his ability to recruit and get the most out of his athletes,” said Dr. Brad Walck, Vice President for Student Affairs. “With the adminis-trative and community support that Seminole will provide him, we are sure that he can lead Trojan Basket-ball to the top of Region II.”

Quinn came to SSC from the Uni-versity of Central Oklahoma where he was the Graduate Assistant Coach for two years. His academic

credentials include a bachelor’s de-gree in Social Studies Education from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Oklahoma.

Quinn said he is excited to be assuming the helm of the Trojan men’s basketball program. “I am very thankful for the opportunity to serve as head coach. We have a good group of guys who have dem-onstrated great attitudes and team-work. I am looking forward to the upcoming season,” he said.

The Trojans will open their sea-son at home against Oklahoma Baptist University Junior Varsity on Nov. 1. They will then hit the road for two neutral court games in Weatherford, Okla. at the Okla-homa-Texas Challenge hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State Uni-versity. The Trojans will play Frank Phillips and Howard College on Nov. 3 and 4.

SSC Global Studies Program to TravelSeminole State College’s 2012-

13 Global Studies excursions have been announced for London and Ireland/England.

The seven-day London New Year’s trip, slated for December 28, 2012 - January 3, 2013 will keep travelers in one city and in one hotel. SSC Professor of Art Kelly Kirk is coordinating this trip. Tour costs vary from $2,900 to $3,157.

A nine-day Western Ireland and London trip, slated for June 11 – 21, 2013 will take travelers throughout Ireland, Dublin, Wales and London. Kirk is also coordinating this trip and the tour costs vary from $3,966 to $4,336.

Kirk, will host an introductory

class on Thursday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. in Boren Library, Room 100 on the SSC campus for interested students and members of the public.

He stresses that community members are invited to participate in all of the trips. “You don’t need to be a SSC student to enjoy this opportunity. Openings are limited, so apply for your passport—if you don’t already have one—and re-serve your place now on this tour full of history and culture,” he said.
