Director’sNOTES

Perk insArts.org 1

Perkins Centerfor the Arts im-pacts communi-ties and changeslives. It changedmine.

More than 40years ago I came

to a beautiful house at Main Street andCamden Avenue to work with fellowvolunteers to clean and clear out thebuilding for community gatherings andactivities. The visionary Mable D’Olierhad given her home, built for her sisterAlice and Alice’s husband DudleyPerkins as a wedding gift, to the Town-ship of Moorestown. I had lived inMoorestown for a short time and join-ing the work effort at what was to be-come Perkins Center for the Artsconnected me more deeply to my newhome and many wonderful people.

Nearly 25 years later I became the Di-rector of ARTS Education for our centersin Moorestown and now Collingswood.I worked out of the Collingswood Cen-ter for 11 years until 2016 when I be-came Executive Director. Stepping intoAlan Willoughby’s ‘shoes’ two and a halfyears ago was an eye-opener, to say theleast. During his 25 year tenure as Exec-utive Director Alan built a thriving andimportant regional multi-disciplinaryarts organization. This has been an ex-traordinary opportunity for me, withthe support and expertise of PerkinsCenter’s exceptional professional staff,to launch new programming and com-munity outreach. The challenges ofleading two vibrant and thriving artscenters have enriched my life andhelped me grow as a person, artist, andadministrator.

Perkins Center for the Arts is poised tomove into our next chapter under theleadership of Kahra Buss, the Board of

Trustees newly appointed CEO. Kahra isa life-long resident of Moorestownwhere she is raising her 3 daughterswith her husband, Joe. Kahra hasworked in marketing in both non-profitand for-profit organizations and is a rec-ognized civic leader. I believe Kahra’sskills and values match well with theneeds and values of Perkins Center forthe Arts.

Perkins Center is truly an arts organi-zation that addresses the individual andthe community with programs that im-pact artistic development and culturalwellbeing. Perkins staff takes these val-ues seriously and we reflect them in ourMission.

As a child art was the tool whichhelped me understand the chaos anddisruption in my personal life, it was asafe place to explore ideas and remapthe commotion around me. It was mywindow to a happier state. It helped meunderstand that, as J. W. Gardner said,“Life is the art of drawing without aneraser.” Art continues to help me seeand take risks and grow and not fearfailure or chaos. It will guide me as Imove to the next part of my life, to turn“retirement” into a time to give backand seek new challenges. I leave PerkinsCenter deeply grateful for this remark-able experience among the best peopleanywhere.

Richard Kamler, Artist and Social Ac-tivist, got it right when he said “Art isour one true global language. It knowsno nation, it favors no race, and it ac-knowledges no class. It speaks to ourneed to reveal, heal, and transform. Ittranscends our ordinary lives and lets usimagine what is possible.”

Thank you for your support, friend-ship and encouragement.

Conservatory of Music NewsWe would like to introduce our new

Manager of the Conservatory of Music,Bryan Williams. Bryan is an accom-plished musician who has held positionsat various music schools and conserva-tories including Westminster Conserva-tory, The Friends Music School and TheMoorestown School of Music. Alongwith managing the conservatory here atPerkins, Bryan also holds a position atClementon Elementary School as theirInstrumental Music Teacher and BandDirector. Bryan is hoping to use his ex-perience from working at other musicschools and conservatories, to success-fully create a positive learning experi-ence here at Perkins.

Flexible Summer Lessons One of the great things we offer here

at Perkins Conservatory of Music is aflexible summer schedule. Here atPerkins we understand that families canhave busy schedules during the summerand need flexibility. A flexible summerschedule allows students to register forjust the weeks that they are available totake lessons during the summer. Westrongly encourage students to con-tinue their instrumental studies duringthe summer in order to maintain theprogress they have achieved during therest of the year. Understanding this im-portance is a big reason why we haveallowed for summer flexibility so that allstudents have an opportunity to con-tinue their studies all year long.

As the celebration of Perkins Center for the Arts’ fortieth year closes, we honorthe legacy of our Executive Director, Karen Chigounis who will retire in June.

Stepping into Alan Willoughby’s footprints two years ago was an eye-opener, tosay the least. Alan built a thriving and important multi-disciplinary arts organiza-tion during his years as Executive Director. It has been an extraordinary opportunityfor me, with the support and expertise of Perkins Center’s exceptional professionalstaff, to launch new programming and community outreach. For nearly 14 years Ihave spent my days here. The challenges of leading 2 vibrant and thriving arts cen-ters have enriched my life and helped me grow as a person, artist, and adminis-trator. We are truly an arts center that addresses the individual and the communitywith programs that impact artistic development and cultural wellbeing.—Karen Chigounis

Chigounis began her career with Perkins Center at its founding as a communityvolunteer who played a part in adapting the Center’s Moorestown headquartersfrom a home into a Center for the Arts. She supported then curator Hope Proper increating the annual juried Photography exhibition which grew into the most re-spected photography exhibition in the tri-state area. As staff member, Karen was re-sponsible for expanding the Center’s programming in the City of Camden throughschool residencies, community public art projects, gardens & murals, and summerarts camp. As the Director of the ARTS program, she grew the Center’s school resi-dency program into a thriving program that creates mentoring relationships betweenartists, schools students and teachers annually over a 200 day period. Chigounis wasinstrumental in expanding the Center’s exhibition program to Collingswood, NJ byvolunteering as cocurator of the Center’s Collingswood Gallery and developing re-gionally recognized curated art exhibitions for the space with curator Philip Carroll.

Karen's professionalism, compassion, and commitment to Southern New Jersey, schools and artists, will be a treasured and enduring part of her legacy. Perkins Centerfor the Arts is indebted to her tireless efforts and will miss her tremendously. In honorof our forty years of community impact through arts experiences and in honor ofKaren Chigounis, we are asking for a donation to our spring annual appeal. We thankyou for the support in building community with the arts and are honored to call youone of our supporters.

Thank you,Diane Felcyn, Associate Director
