The Benefits of MulchingThe myth of mulching

by john Cloutier

There is a myth out therethat mulching clippings isnot good for turf. The mythwould have you believethat mulching builds up

thatch and that the final appearanceis inferior to mowing and bagging clip-pings. The reality, however, is quite thecontrary. If you have the right equip-ment, you can mulch, get a great look-ing cut, and actually improve theheal th of your turf.

Mulching, sometimes called "grass-cycling," also recycles valuable nutri-ents into the turf while making signif-icant strides toward waste reduction.

Mulching can also provide dramat-ic boosts to turf maintenance produc-tivity. By eliminating the need to stop

and empty bags, thencollect and dispose ofelippings, turf care pro-fessionals can reducethe time it takes to cutgrass on a property by30 to 50 percent.

Mulching con-serves water andkeeps turf greenerGrass clippings containnitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.Grasscycling returns these nutrientsto the turf, providing up to 25 percentof the lawn's total annual nitrogenrequirement. Grass blades arebetween 70 and 80 percent waterwhen freshly cut. When the grass is

chopped finely and blown deep intothe turf, much of the moisture returnsto the soil. Plus, the dry mulch acts asa barrier that reduces evaporationfrom the soil, further conservingwater.

"In the summer when it's dry, wesee the difference in the turf.Even with the same watering, our grass stays greener thanneighboring turf where the clip-pings have been collected."

Mark HeinzHeinz Landscape and Construction

Glenview, IL

The myth that grasscycling createstoo much thatch is erroneous. In real-ity over-fertilizing, over-watering, andcutting too much of the grass bladecauses stems, roots, and partiallydecomposed matter to build up on thetop of the soil. The rapid decomposi-tion of the tiny clippings produced bygrasscycling helps to actually preventthatch from developing.

Earthworms, beneficial insects, and microorganisms actually improvethe quality of your soil and your lawn.Finely-chopped clippings, even leaves, make an excellent meal for these crea-tures and are quickly broken down, releasing valuable elements andhumus to the soil. This is a natural

way to a great-looking lawn.

"We've been inthe business 62years, cuttinglarge, privateestates for somevery particu-larly people. We startedmulching fouryears ago. Nowwe mulch year-round, and Ithink ourlawns are bet-ter for it. We'vereduced our fertilizer needs,we're using less chemicals, andare seeing more earthworms.Mulching works wonders. Withfew employees, I've cut a lot ofexpenses. It really helps the bot-tom line."

Mulching bad for your lawn?Remember the facts. Mulching cre-ates waste reduction, water conserva-tion, a healthier soil, and keeps nutri-ents in the soil. With the right equip-ment, the finished cut produced bymulching can be picture-perfect. •
