BEGIN THE ADVENTURE… with Continuing Education. Our staff looks forward to working with you!

From the Dean of UW-Waukesha

It has been a year since I arrived from the hot winds of Arizona to the cool breezes of Wisconsin, but despite the temperature disparity, my outlook and reception from the community and UW-Waukesha has been quite warm. What I have consistently noticed, since my arrival, is the awareness from the community of UW-Waukesha Continuing Edu-cation and its excellent opportunities and programming. In many ways, the first introduction to UW-Waukesha is through Continuing Education and that says to me that this department is about creating a community of lifelong learners. Whether encouraging students in pursuing new talents through personal enrichment classes, attaining professional development through undergraduate credit courses and certificates or discovering the world through domestic and international trips, Con-tinuing Education is a leader in learning. Take advantage of Continuing Education by taking a step towards bettering yourself; remember, no matter your age, experience or level of education, continue to grow.

See you on campus!

"Up until recently, I have, for the most part, ignored my artistic side. This spring, to treat myself, I decided to take a class that I've always wanted to try: oil painting. This medium has both intrigued and intimidated me since I was a young girl. I had admired both professional and amateur artists' abilities, and wondered about my own possible skills. The class itself was wonderful: supportive, positive, and informative. Each week I was taught a different technique that guided me towards my ultimate goal. I am now on my fourth painting, and loving every minute that I spend immersed in oil painting!"

Ancient Eastern PhilosophyInstructor, Vinod ChaudharyFind a means to spiritual healing. Discover why the different an-cient Eastern philosophies of Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Taoism all share and advocate selflessness, an appreciation of the miracles of the universe, and respect for nature in all their wisdom. Students will learn the essence of Eastern philosophy, an awareness of the unity and mutual interrelation of all things and events and how these philosophies have great contemporary value in today’s busy world. 1.2 CEUW, Oct 3-Nov 7, 6:00pm-8:00pm, $99

History of Buddhist Thought Instructor, Michael MulloolyBuddhism is not just a religion. It is also a philosophical tradi-tion that delves into questions concerning the nature of human existence. The Buddha himself avoided metaphysical inquiry. He believed compassionate activity was more important than philo-sophical speculation. But thinkers have plumbed the depths to elucidate his teachings. This course surveys the development of Buddhist thought. Beginning with the teachings of the Buddha himself, we explore the early realist schools of Hinayana Bud-dhism. Next we analyze later positions held by the idealist schools of Mahayana Buddhism. Finally, we witness the great flowering of Buddhist thought in Zen philosophy. A knowledge of Buddhism is not necessary, but helpful. An interest in Buddhist philosophy is essential. In the end we hope to find answers to life’s great ques-tions from a Buddhist perspective. 1.2 CEU W, Nov 7-Dec 19 (No class Nov 21), 6:30pm-8:30pm, $99

Jourdan

Christopher J. Jourdan has worked as a photographer for over 15 years in our local community photographing everything from portraits, products, weddings, videos, advertising, and fashion. Born and raised in Milwaukee, where he now resides, his passion for photography started early on with black and white photography. The darkroom soon became his best friend. Chris was an early adopter of both the digi-tal medium and Photoshop. Working at many of the local studios in the Southeastern Wisconsin area digital photography became a breeze. With this early knowledge of such new systems Chris began offering basic digital camera and Photoshop classes. He joined UW -Waukesha Continuing Education as an instructor in 2005. His classes have gained much recognition and popularity in the local communities. Chris now currently owns and oper-ates Christopher J. 2013 Annual World Travel Fair

This spring Continuing Education will hold its 3rd annual World Travel Fair on campus! Explore in-ternational and domestic trips. We welcome new explorers. Discover where we can take you next!

Coming Soon…Spring 2013Blues and Greens: Act III With Vic Passante Following the tradition and success of past Blues and Greens trips this spring we will be heading to the Northwest for the best restaurants and most exciting theatre in Seattle and Portland.

Traditionally, Blues and Greens pairs exciting city’s best food with an art form. Blues and Greens 2010 featured the ribs and blues in Memphis and the gumbo and jazz in New Orleans; last May’s Blues and Greens: Numero Dos brought our group to New Mexico to sample green chili and the art of Santa Fe; 2013’s theatre and food trip to Seattle and Portland will offer other delightfully tasteful treats!

In Seattle, we will pair the Seattle Repertory and Intiman Theatres with the very best restaurants and throw in a side dish or two of Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, and a coffee tour. Then it’s on to Portland’s Artist’s Reper-tory Theater and Portland Center Stage paired with the city’s famous food carts and restaurants featuring fresh, local meals–heck, the Eat Local movement sprang from Portland’s passion for food. Of course, we’ll have time to spend in the city’s famous Rose and Japanese gardens. Look out for more breaking details on our website!

Lifelong

Learner 2012 Arlene Friedel

A lifelong learner is someone who embodies the spirit of Continuing Education by building skills and knowledge throughout their life. Lifelong learners are active investigators of the world

around them, creative and critical in their thinking and effective communicators and participants in

their community.

“I am definitely a believer in lifelong learning, having worked for higher education institutions most of my life. After taking courses at night for many years while working, I decided to focus on getting my college degree by attending UWM full-time where I received my B.A. degree. Since retiring I have continued taking college courses, most recently by taking many computer courses at UW-Waukesha. They were very helpful and informative. I highly recommend the Continuing Education courses at UW-Waukesha for anyone interested in lifelong learning.”
