PAUL BHASINEmory University Conductor Paul Bhasin joins the faculty of Emory University as Director

of Wind Studies in 2015. In this capacity, he will direct the Emory Wind

Ensemble and teach conducting. Praised for his “crisp, clear” conducting

and “highly expressive” interpretations, Bhasin has led a variety of

ensembles throughout North America and abroad including recent

performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and throughout

the People’s Republic of China. Bhasin’s recent guest engagements include

appearances with the Interlochen Arts Academy Concert Band, Virginia

Symphony Brass and Percussion, and the American Youth Philharmonic. He is in demand as a guest

conductor and adjudicator and was recently invited to present at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic

(in collaboration with the U.S. Marine Band), the College Band Directors National Association Southern

Division Conference, and the Music Teachers National Association Conference. His transcriptions

and arrangements have been performed and commissioned in the US and abroad by the United States

Marine Band, St. Louis Opera Th eater, the United States Air Force Brass in Blue, Grand Tetons Festival

Orchestra, La Unió Musical l’Horta de Sant Marcel·lí (Valencia, Spain) and the Washington Symphonic

Brass (DC). His upcoming Centaur Records release features the music of Brian Hulse and is performed

by principals from the Richmond and Virginia Symphonies as well as the College of William & Mary

Wind Ensemble.

Dr. Brian L. Bowman enjoys a distinguished career as a soloist, clinician,

Pitt sburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, Oklahoma

City Philharmonic, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Symphonica of Xlapa, Mexico.

He has performed concertos with the Sapporo Japan, Symphony Orchestra the North Carolina

DAVID BRUBECKMiami Dade CollegeDr. David William Brubeck serves as Professor of Music at the Kendall

Campus of Miami Dade College where he coordinates the chamber music

program and teaches trombone as well as courses in Music Th eory and

Jazz. Brubeck performs regularly with the Miami City Ballet Orchestra,

Brass Miami, DUO BRUBECK, DUO BRASS and DUO WINDS. Brubeck’s

occasional performances have included the likes of Stevie Wonder, Th e

Bolshoi Ballet,Ray Charles, the American Ballet Th eatre and as a solo

artist for the International Trombone Festival, and the International

Tuba and Euphonium Conference. Brubeck’s compositions, entitled

Stereograms, have been performed and recorded throughout the globe

and three were recently recorded by Boston Symphony bass trombonist

James Markey on his latest CD, “Psychedelia”. Th ese self-accompanied

rhythmic etudes inspired by the Cello Suites of Bach and the unaccompanied works of Bobby McFerrin

have been transcribed for saxophone and tuba. As a soloist, Brubeck has been featured with the Miami

Wind Symphony, Th e Florida Atlantic University Orchestra, Greater Miami Symphonic Band as a

soloist with pianist Bronwen Rutt er. Brubeck has comissioned,premiered and performed countless

RICHARD CLEMENTSGeorgia State University

Grammy-winning American tenor RICHARD CLEMENT has

performed with most of America’s major orchestras and mu-

sic directors. He recently earned particular acclaim with the

National Art Centre Orchestra in Ott awa in Beethoven’s Missa

Solemnis under the baton of Pinchas Zukerman and for the title

in Elgar’s Th e Dream of Gerontius with the North Carolina Sym-

phony and Sacramento Choral Arts Society and Orchestra. In

addition, he premiered and recorded Th eofanides’s Th e Here and

Now (nominated for a Grammy) with Robert Spano and the At-

lanta Symphony, including performances in Atlanta and Carn-

egie Hall. Among the most in demand tenors for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, invitations include the

Boston Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and other orchestras throughout the United States.

Recent engagements include a debut at the Casals Festival in San Juan Puerto Rico, the Vermont

Symphony Orchestra and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra the Cincinnati Opera and a return

to the Tanglewood Music Festival for Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music. Mr. Clement’s opera

engagements include performances with the New York City Opera, Belgium’s De Vlaamse Opera,

Opera Frankfurt, the Vancouver Opera, and Glimmerglass Opera among others in operas ranging

from Handel to John Adams. Mr. Clement graduated from Georgia State University and the College

Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He is currently an associate professor of

voice and artist-in-residence at Georgia State University.

CARYL CONGERCollaborative PianistPianist, Caryl Worthington Conger, continues her passion

of musical collaboration, performing regularly with wind and

brass artists in recitals and conferences throughout the U. S.

and abroad including the annual U.S. Army Band Tuba-Eupho-

nium Conferences and the recent ITEA conferences in Finland

and Greensboro and Denver. Her niche of interest has been her

LAUREN VERONIE CURRANUS Army Field Band

Sergeant First Class Lauren Curran plays euphonium with the United

States Army Field Band in Washington, D.C. As a member of the Army’s

premier touring ensemble, Lauren travels and performs across the United

States over 120 days each year. She has been a featured soloist with the

Concert Band in 18 states and regularly performs with the US Army

Field Band Brass Qu intet. Lauren is a graduate of the University of North

Texas, where she studied euphonium with Dr. Brian L. Bowman. She is

the winner of the 2004 Potomac International Euphonium Competition.

Lauren is a passionate performer and teacher, and works hard to balance

the life of a euphonium rock star with her new role as “mom” to an

energetic baby boy. She loves hiking, science fi ction, and cooking Cajun

RON DAVISUniversity of South CarolinaRonald Davis is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the

University of South Carolina School of Music and principal tuba

with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra. Ron was born

and raised in southern California and during his early career

was an active free-lance musician in the Los Angeles area. For

fi ve seasons he was the principal tuba with the Santa Barbara

Symphony Orchestra, and had also performed with the Los

Angeles Master Chorale and Sinfonia Orchestra under Roger

Wagner, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles

Civic Light Opera. During his college years Ron and three of

his friends formed “Th e Tubadours”, a professional euphonium/

tuba quartet that played seasonally at Disneyland and capped

its early years by winning television’s Th e Gong Show. He was

an original cast member of the Pioneer Hall Hoop-De-Doo

Review at Walt Disney World, Florida (playing banjo) and also

performed regularly at Knott ’s Berry Farm and Ghost Town, Six

Flags Magic Mountain and Universal Studios Tour.

Adam Frey is the Artistic Director of the IET Festival for the

past 12 years and travels the world sharing his music with

audiences and students. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Adam Frey received his musical training at the University of Geor-

gia and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester,

England. As a major ambassador of the euphonium, Adam

has more than ninety works that have been composed or

specifi cally arranged for him. Adam has soloed with orches-

tras the world over, including the world famous Boston Pops,

Cheju Symphony Orchestra (South Korea), US Army Orches-

tra (Washington DC), Harvard Pops (MA), Fort Collins (CO),

Indian Hill (MA), the Vaasa Symphony Orchestra (Finland), Atlanta Philharmonic (GA), Cascade

JAMES GOURLAYRiver City Brass Band

James Gourlay was born in Scotland where, at an early age, he was

volunteered to play in the local school brass band. He made rapid

progress and soon became Scott ish National solo champion at

junior and senior levels. Gourlay later studied tuba performance

at the Royal College of Music, London, but left aft er a short time to

take up a full time position in the City of Birmingham Symphony

Orchestra. Th ree years later, he became principal tuba of the

BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. Aft er 10 great years at

the BBC, working with some of the world’s greatest conductors,

Gourlay was invited to become the solo tubist of the Zurich Opera House Orchestra in Switzerland.

Today, James Gourlay is the General Director of Pitt sburgh’s own River City Brass, the world’s only

full-time professional brass band, performing 70 concerts annually all over the USA, and Director of

Instrumental Music and University Bands at Wheeling Jesuit University, West Virginia.

JAY HUNSBERGERUniversity of South Florida, Sarasota SymphonyTuba legend Harvey Phillips wrote “Jay Hunsberger is one of

America’s premiere orchestral tubists, an experienced soloist and

sensitive chamber music performer.” Mr. Hunsberger is the principal

tubist with the Sarasota Orchestra and Professor of Tuba and

Euphonium at the University of South Florida in Tampa. During his

tenure at USF, he has developed a tuba/euphonium studio which rivals

that of major universities in the US. In addition to the OCTUBAFEST!

Series (which features guest and student performances), the studio

brings world-renown tuba and euphonium soloists to the Tampa

campus for recitals and master classes with USF students. Mr. Hunsberger received both BM and MM

degrees in performance from the Indiana University School of Music. His teachers have included Dan

Perantoni, Harvey Phillips, Roger Bobo, and Sam Pilafi an.

IGOR KRIVOKAPICIgor Krivokapic was born on 10 November 1965 in Ljubljana, and

now lives in Polhov Gradec. He studied tuba at the Academy of

Music in Ljubljana, graduating in 1988, and then achieved a Master

of Music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, USA,

studying tuba with Toby Hanks, electronic composition with Caleb

Morgan, classical composition with Robert Ceely and orchestration

with Malcolm Peyton. Before dedicating himself completely to

composition, he was a tuba soloist with the RTV Slovenia Symphony

Orchestra (1985-1995), a symphonic music producer at Radio Slovenia

from 1996 until 1999 and also taught at various music schools in

Ljubljana. He has become a promoter of brass instruments. His fi rst symphony was presented by the RTV

Slovenia Symphony Orchestra in 2003.

VIDOR AND BRATO KRIVOKAPICAt age of seven, Vidor (b. 2003) started to learn Soprano helicon with his father at the Ljubljana

Conservatory of Music and Ballet. Brato (b. 2001), at the age of secen, began the accordian and later

learned the tenor helicon in 2011. Both won special fi rst prizes (100 points) at 17th International Music

Competition in Novi Sad (Serbia). Both have been playing numerous concert occasions in Slovenia,

Serbia, Germany, Austria, Latvia and Spain. Both have appeared with the Symphony orchestra of Emila

Melngaila Liepajas muzikas vidusskolas in Liepaja Latvia and were guest artists of ITEC 2014.

KATALIN PETER KRIVOKAPIC Katalin Péter Krivokapič graduated from the music school in Subotica with her teacher Prof. Maria

Szekely. and earned a Master’s degree in Novi Sad with Arbo Valdma. During her studies she was

awarded many fi rst prizes at the states and federal competitions of young musicians. She performed

in the Vojvodina Youth Orchestra, the chamber orchestra of Novi Sad, the Philharmonic Orchestra of

Television Novi Sad and Belgrade.she is employed at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana.

BRIAN MEIXNERHigh Point UniversityBrian Meixner is an active euphonium soloist, conductor and educator, currently on the faculty at High

Point University where he serves as the Assistant Director of Bands and teaches studio low brass. Brian

is also is the Founder, Music Director and President of the newly formed North Carolina Brass Band,

the newest professional brass band in the United States. Th e NCBB released their debut album, “First in

Flight”, in 2014. Brian has held the position of Assistant Conductor of the River City Brass Band, where

he played euphonium full time for six years. Brian has been

featured with the RCBB on several performances, both as a

euphoniumist and conductor. He has also been featured as a

euphonium solo artist and clinician with several professional

ensembles, various universities, community bands, high

school ensembles, brass bands, and state, national and

international music conferences. Brian has previously served

on the faculties of UNC-Greensboro, Slippery Rock University,

the University of Texas at Arlington and Texas Woman’s

University. He also served as the Euphonium Teaching Fellow

at the University of North Texas, where he completed a DMA

in Euphonium Performance.

NATHAN DAUGHTREYHigh Point UniversityPercussionist, composer, & educator Nathan Daughtrey (b.

1975) is a musical chameleon who uses his wide-ranging

talents to adapt comfortably to a variety of environments. As a performing artist and clinician for

Yamaha percussion, Vic Firth sticks & mallets, Zildjian cymbals, and Black Swamp accessories, he has

performed and given masterclasses and clinics throughout the United States and across three continents.

Nathan has recorded two solo marimba albums to date – “Spiral Passages” and “Th e Yuletide Marimba”

– as well as several chamber music albums, including a recent collaboration with euphoniumist Brian

Meixner titled “Praxis.” With over 60 publications for percussion ensemble, concert band, orchestra,

chamber ensembles, and soloists as well as an ever-growing number of commissions, Nathan balances

his performing with composing, and to great acclaim. He is the only composer in the history of the

Percussive Arts Society International Composition Contest to procure both 2nd and 3rd place in the

same year with his percussion ensemble works “Limerick Daydreams” and “Adaptation,” respectively.

Nathan’s compositions appear regularly on performances at PASIC, the Midwest Band and Orchestra

Clinic, the Bands of America National Percussion Festival, and in concert halls and other performance

venues around the world.

DEVIN REIDLanier Middle SchoolT. Devin Reid is currently an active musician and educator

throughout the southeast. A native of Fayett eville, NC,

Mr. Reid is a 2005 recipient of the North Carolina Teaching

Fellows Scholarship. He holds a Master of Music in Wind

Band Conducting from Georgia State University and a

Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University

of North Carolina at Greensboro. His primary conducting

teachers include Dr. Robert Ambrose, Dr. Chester Phillips,

and Dr. Kevin Geraldi. He studied percussion with Dr.

Andrew Dancy, Dr. Cort McClaren and Mr. Peter Zlotnick.

In 2015 Mr. Reid accepted the position as Director of

Bands at Lanier Middle School in Sugar Hill, GA. Prior

to his appointment at Lanier, Mr. Reid served as Graduate

Assistant for the Georgia State University Bands and

previously, Director of Bands at James Kenan High School

in Warsaw, NC.

PATRICK SHERIDANSalt River Brass & International SoloistPatrick Sheridan is one of the most celebrated soloists in his instrument’s history. He has performed

more than 3,000 concerts in over 50 countries in venues ranging from the White House to NBA half-

time shows to the Hollywood Bowl. At 20 years of age,

Patrick became a member of “Th e President’s Own”

United States Marine Band. During his military service,

he thrilled audiences across the United States with

his amazing virtuosity and musicianship as one of the

band’s primary soloists. Since then, Patrick has gone

on to become an incredibly diverse artist with concert

performances transcending stylistic genres and building

fans around the world for his instrument, the tuba. He

has been featured in television and radio broadcasts on

4 continents including appearances most recently on

NBC’s Today Show and NPR’s All Th ings Considered and Performance Today. Patrick maintains a

busy international career with more than 75 concerts annually with orchestras, bands, and chamber

ensembles and in recital.

MAGDALANA SHUMANOVACollaborative PianistOriginally from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Magdalena Shumanova

started her piano studies at the age of 4, and att ended Secondary

Music School “Dobrin Petkov” from 1st - 12th grade. After

graduating with honors, she continued her studies at Florida

State University, pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Piano

Performance. She recently graduated with her Masters of Music

in Collaborative Piano at the San Francisco Conservatory

of Music. Magdalena has accompanied world renowned

musicians at the Summer Brass Institute for 4 years, and at the

International Euphonium Tuba Festival for the 10th year now.

Some of the musicians include international brass soloists and

brass members from the San Francisco Symphony, Opera, and

Ballet Orchestras, as well as Chicago Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra. Ms. Shumanova has the

pleasure to reside and currently work as a Music Director and Pianist for the Musical Th eatre Works in

San Francisco.

JANEZ ŽNIDARŠIC Principal Tuba, Slovenia Philharmonic OrchestraJanez Žnidaršič, born in 1969 in Postojna, Slovenia, started his musical training in 1979 at the Fran

Gerbič Music School in Cerknica where he played the trombone.

After only two years’ training, he joined the Godba Cerknica

wind orchestra. At the time, the orchestra was in need of tuba

players, so upon request of the conductor, Tone Urh, and also in

his own wish, he switched to tuba. Even as a trombone player, he

wanted to pursue musical career, but that was not possible at the

time because a profession in music was still a big unknown.Aft er

completing secondary vocational school in Postojna and a few

years’ work in one of the local factories, his wish to engage in music

professionally grew even stronger. In 1993, he started training to

enroll at the Secondary Music and Ballet School of Ljubljana with

professor Dragiša Mišković. In 1996, he entered the class of professor Igor Krivokapić as a tuba student

and completed the course in 2002. In the same year, he enrolled at the Ljubljana Academy of Music

and successfully completed his studies under the mentorship of professor Darko Rošker four years

later.While still a student, he started teaching at the Ajdovščina Music School and later at the Postojna

Music School where he remained for ten years. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Slovene

Philharmonics Orchestra. In the past years, he has att ended seminars of renowned professors and

musicians (Velvet Brown, Mario Barsott i). Among others, he has also completed a two-year masterclass

for tuba with Roger Bobo.32

COBB WIND SYMPHONYFormed in September 1999, the Cobb Wind Symphony (CWS) is comprised of 110 adult musicians

from all over the Atlanta area. Th e CWS was created to provide a musical outlet for musicians of

Cobb County and the Atlanta area as a means to further the development of band music. Th e group

has grown from its initial 77 members to over 100, and includes musicians from all professions

including music, education, medicine, law, engineering, and management and technology. Brought

together by a common love of music, the members of the Cobb Wind Symphony bring a unique new

sound to the metro Atlanta area. Th e charter committ ee and current board are made many of Lassiter

High School Band alumni and past students of Alfred Watkins. In 2009, the Cobb Wind Symphony

was awarded Sudler’s Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for community

concert bands. Th e purpose of this award is to identify, recognize and honor those community bands

that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period

of several years, and which have played a signifi cant and leading role in the cultural and musical

environment in their respective communities. Th e Sudler Award is sponsored by the John Philip

Sousa Foundation, which seeks to uphold the standards and ideals of the American icon, John Philip

Sousa. Some of CWS’s past performances include: 2006 and 2008 NBA/CBDNA Southern Division

Conference; 2005, 2007, 2010, 2015 GMEA Convention; and the 2003 and 2010 Midwest Band Clinic.

ALFRED WATKINS Conductor, Cobb Wind SymphonyMr. Alfred L. Watkins was Director of Bands at Lassiter High School for 31 years. For six years

prior to joining Lassiter, Watkins served as Director of Bands

at Murphy High School in the APS. Bands under Watkins’

direction have performed four times at the Midwest Band Clinic,

six performances at the BOA National Concert Band Festival

and fi ve performances at the GMEA In-Service Conference. Th e

symphonic band has performed on the college campuses of the

University of Georgia, Florida State University, the University

of South Carolina and Troy State University. The Lassiter

Percussion Ensemble has performed twice at the Midwest Clinic,

PASIC, National Percussion Festival and three times at the

Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference. Th e

Lassiter Marching Band was the 1998 & 2002 Bands of America

Grand National Champion and the band has also won nine

BOA Regional Championships. Th e band has also participated

in four Tournament of Roses Parade, three times in the Macy’s

Th anksgiving Day Parade, twice in the Orange Bowl Parade and once in the Citrus Bowl Parade. Th e

band program is one of only fourteen high bands in America to have received both the Sudler Flag of

Honor for concert and the Sudler Shield for marching. Mr. Watkins was selected as a member of the

Florida A & M Gallery of Distinguished Alumni, the Bands of America Hall of Fame, the American

Bandmasters Association and the Georgia Chapter of the Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame. He has

received sixteen Certifi cates of Excellence from the National Band Association, the Sudler Order of

Merit from the John Philip Sousa Foundation and the Band World Magazine Legion of Honor. Mr.

Watkins is Co-Founder, Conductor and Musical Director of the Cobb Wind Symphony, an all-adult

community band based in the Atlanta. Th e $1.5 million Lassiter Band Building bears his name.

HELICON ENSEMBLE OF THE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC AND BALLET LJUBLJANA Th e Helicon Ensemble was formed in September 2014 at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet

Ljubljana. It is the fi rst and currently the only one in the world. Members of the Helicon Ensemble

are mostly young musicians led by professor Igor Krivokapic. Th e Conservatory of Music and

Ballet Ljubljana is also the musical educational institution where the idea of the new instruments

was born as well as the pioneer on the education of these splendid new brass instruments. In

2012, aft er eight years of intensive research, development and cooperation with musicians of at

least four European countries led by. Igor Krivokapic, an eminent music instrument maker from

Germany, Wenzel Meinl GmbH, fi nally constructed a brand new family of brass instruments - the

New Helicons. Aft er almost two centuries of invention of valves and research in construction, a

consistent theory if acoustics have been successfully applied to a whole new family of wide bore

conical brass instruments. Th e six new instruments from soprano down to contrabass are a genuine

but decisive step in the evolution of an ancient concept based on the golden ratio.instruments from

The MDC Kendall Mixed Low Brass Quintet has performed throughout South Florida,

launched the Jazz at Th e Clinic series at the Cleveland Clinic-Weston and has been coached by

Delfayo Marsais and the Ahn Trio. Th e group is among the fi rst dedicated to the mixed low

brass genre which includes tenor trombone, euphonium, bass trombone and tuba.
