TO THE DIRECTOR

This authentic salsa is the second movement of Centenario commis-sioned by the Riverside City College Centennial Celebration. The RCCmascot is the tiger, hence the title El Tigre. This piece utilizes the popu-lar songo style, which has been carefully notated in the rhythm parts toensure authenticity. This rhythm is most commonly heard in salsamusic and employs lots of exciting syncopation supported by a repeti-tious, but always moving rhythm section background.

During the solo section at m.68, chord changes and solo sheets areprovided for baritone sax, trumpet and trombone. However, thechanges are quite accessible and solos may be assigned to any instru-ment.

As in most of Jarvis’ offerings, frequent articulations and dynamics areprovided for the horns and the rhythm parts are an integral part of thearrangement, not merely an afterthought.

The key to performing El Tigre is to avoid the tendency to get too fancywith the rhythm section parts. In any type of Afro-Cuban music, the keyis to have a lot of players doing very simple things that “puzzle togeth-er” into a rhythm that is easy to follow whether listening or dancing. It isrecommended that rhythm section players listen to other Latin music tointernalize the various styles. Feel free to add other auxiliary percus-sionists, but make sure they play simple figures! Timbales, congas,bongo, and cowbell are likely choices.

During unisons, resist the temptation to play loudly, instead performingin a precise and controlled manner. Make sure your entrances andreleases are accurate and let the rhythm section maintain the steadi-ness of the time feel.
