have always had a love for miniatures As is true with many people I would always

o my sons who eventually got the b ding started and it has snow-b ed from there

ive years ago my son was s ching for something special to i e to his girlpoundriend for Christmas

er much searching he finally cided on a dollhouse kit that

they could assemble and decorate together That same year they conshyvinced my husband to buy a kit for me That gift changed the rest of my life

Working on the dollhouses and looking for miniatures to put in them became our obsession We traveled far and wide to dollhouse stores and miniature shows to find the perfect dollhouse furniture and miniatures accessories Then one day while searching on eBay I found an auction for a dollhouse store inventory My thinking was if I win the bid we can use the furniture we want in our houses and then sell the rest at miniatures shows until gone It seemed like a great plan

Within a week my husband and I found ourselves driving to New York We rented a V-Haul trailer and brought the inventory home to Iowa On returning home I learned that the flower shop owner who was renting our commercial building was closing her shop immedmiddotately This closing w ould leave our building empty during the Christmas season I reasoned with my husband that it w ould make sense for me to open a miniatures store for the three months of the Christmas sea on and then look for a new tenant for our building Tha was four years ago Not only is my store still open but it is thriving

Helpful Hints for Assembling Your

Dollhouse Kit By Deborah Perry

Identifying and Marking the Pieces The Eirst and most important task to do is to lay

all the pieces on a table Identify the piece with the list of parts in th e back of the instruction book f always mark each piece with the corresponding part number given Use a pencil as ink will ~bleed through your paint

Painting the Ceilings and Walls and Exterior

If you know your color scheme it is much easier to paint all parts before assembly Go to the pamt storeif you are having trouble coming up Wlth a color scheme They cany paint sample cards that have three colors that complement each other Your bouse will be more eye appealing jf you use a minimiddot mum of three colors on the exterior

Glue tbe Shell Together When assembling the shell I like to use very

small brads along with glue Elmerregs r w~od glue will work The glue I use is called Grmp It IS a water based glue dries clear and dries fast so m most cases no damping is necessary If ~amp1Dg 1S

necessary use masking tape It clamps rucely around oddmiddotsh pe pieces

Assembling the Roof Before you attach the poundoaf mark the large flat

parts of the roof for the shingles Your mstructlons will tell you how this is to be done When It comes to marking the small gableIOof sectlOns I w alt until the roof is attached Then using the blg roof lines as a guide I mark the gable pie es This way all rows are even t glue channel pieces on ~~ peak of each roof section This gives the roof a finished edge

where the top row of shingles ends If you plan to staut th~ shingles stain ~nough shingles to shingle ~e outsIde rows that will be next to a painted trim plece and you wn t ha~e to worry about getting stam on those pamted pIeces YOt can stain the rest when the roof is complete One bead of glue along the top ~dge of the pencil marking is enough to hold the shingles Remember if you get glue on the surface of the shingle it will not take staID You will have light spots any place glue has touched paint Paint the roof the same color as the house or tnm When dry use a darker color paint that has been watered down Paint shingle with this ~atered paint making sure to get the dark color mto cracks and where the shingles overlap one another With a rag wipe off excess

Positioning and Finishing the Interior Walls

It is much easier to paper before you install the windows and doors You now need to decide where your walls will be placed Be creative and build ~e rooms to your specifications Do not glue the mtenor walls in at this time but mark on the front inside wall where that partition will be Measure the height of the rooms to be papered and cut the wallpaper accordinOIy Dont worry about cutting out where the windows and doors are After the wallpaper glue has dried you can asily cut around these openings Be sure to bring a little bit of the paper around the back edges

pplying the Foundation Texture Paint the foundation the color you desire your

middotmo~r~ to be When dry apply a brick or stone s~enctl Your instructions tell you to do one side at a ume I do the complete foundation at one time b~cause you can wrap the stencil all the way around giVIng the look of reaJ bricks or stones on the corshy~ers Use masking tape to keep the brick in an even line and off the area where the steps will be placed Mix the same amount of water and Elmers Glue (1 usually add a litrle extra EImers) Add this mixture a little ltIt a time to the powder until you have the conslStency of frostmg Spread the mLxture on the foundati~n wi~ a thin putty krufe This is a place where thicker IS not better By the time you have spread the OllXture all around the foundation you can start pulling the stencil off 1

Gluing the Floor Using paper or thin cardboard make a pattern of

the room Boor You can easily trim the pattern to fit the room Place the Booring the way it will be put in the house Place the pattern the same way undershyneath the flooring _ ow tum the flooring and the pattern upside down and trace around the pattern ~nto the flooring back I use Magna Tac for all floorshymg Use a thin coat too much will soak through) Be sur to get an eIen coat on the entire floor Lay a bead of glue around the outside edge and up and down the inside with Lin s of inrervals from a halfshyinch to one-inch

was wondering why we could not win the lottery so we could afford a condo on a

O ne gray and somewhat cold February day my husband was suffering from cabin fever and

was wondering why we could not win the lottery so we could afford a condo on a

shop nearby and even though rderil g online is lIseful I like going to visi t a shop because it is a wondelful experience for me I discover that I can receive inspiratio when I see the aeiual productsThis is wl11 I enjoyed Dollhouse Dreams and Minial Wishes and wanted to share it with you Even the name itself is inspiring This delightful shop is owned by Debbie Pem Her sun Waylon also helps out in the stCY~ along with her yellow lab Allie

It is a well stocked store and has been open for six years So how did Debbie come to oln a miniature store It all bega~ when her sons girlfriend (now his wife)

Florida beach Never mind that he rarely plays the lottery So he decided that we should create our own excitement by getting in the car and driving over to the Mississippi River along eastern Iowa I thought that was a great idea because I had discovered there was a doll house shop in Fort Madison Iowa I am always up for an adventure besides ~lat more could a miniaturist want
