The Process of Corrosion

Bacteriogenic acid attack is a problem in sewers

which run partially full (figure 1). Anaerobic bacteria

reduce sulphates in the effluent to sulphides and lead

to the formation of hydrogen sulphide (H S). 2

The hydrogen sulfide escapes into the sewer

atmosphere and is then carried to the crown of the

pipe by convection. Once there, it oxidizes to sulphur or

dissolves in moisture to form sulphuric acid (H SO ).2 4

Both species of sulphur are nutrients for a second set

of anaerobic bacteria. This bacterial action produces

sulphuric acid – known as biogenic sulphuric acid

corrosion (BSAC).

The sulphuric acid attacks the Portland cement mortar

by dissolving the Portlandite (Ca(OH) ) and calcium 2

silicate hydrate phases, leaving a silica gel. Similarly in

effluent treatment plant or other high acidic or alkaline

environments the corrosive media attack the RCC

and substantially reduces its life by weakening the

structures both structurally and chemically.

Sangir, an innovative engineering company manufacturing semifinished thermoplastic

products, presents SanGrip, a premium Concrete Protective T Profiled Liner from its PlastNova

division of Sheeting Products.

Plastic Concrete Liners in various shapes and materials are successfully in use worldwide for almost 4 decades now. SanGrip

represents a better design and advanced material attributes & in wider widths to this same well proven basic lining principle.

SanGrip PE concrete Liner forms the barrier to aggressive corrosive media and protects the concrete structure. The best of both

worlds are achieved when the advantages of Plastic in combatting corrosion are coupled with superior mechanical & structural

strength of concrete.

The design of SanGrip offered by Sangir is superior to other competing liner products as it provides a full length deep coverage

within the concrete mass. Pull out tests indicate better performance and versatility of applications. The linear bonding within

the concrete handles linear coefficient of expansion far better than V shaped Profiles.

7SanGrip PE Liners for Concrete Protection

Installation of PE liners onRCC pipes & concrete surfaces

Installation of SanGrip PE Liners in RCC pipes

The SanGrip Concrete PE Liner sheets which can be procured from Sangir both in sheet or in

roll form. The welded sheets/rolls are placed in concrete pipe or structural forms and attached

by mechanical means so that they hold a fixed position when concrete is poured. The profiled

side always faces the concrete, mortar or grout. When the concrete is delivered and consequent

vibration of the same, it is to be ensured that the concrete has flowed around the projecting

T-Ribs fully for best results.

Following steps are taken:

a) Rolled PE Liner Sheet is inserted into pre-casting mould before inserting reinforcements.

b) Reinforcements laid and then concrete is poured in gap and vibration for settling is done.

Welding methods after pipes are installed on field

Welding & Quality Check Guidance

www.sangir.com

For vertical installations, use a wall crawling wedge-welding machine

For straight joints, a wedge welding machine

is popularly used

For all other general welding requirements, a hot air based welding gun is used

For RCC Pipes, an extrusion welding

gun with welding rodsis used
