Throughout his nearly 31-year career at PPG, Dr. Swarup has been a highly creative scientist, mentor and asset to PPG and the Science and Technology organization. He has made numer- ous contributions that have helped create many-many commer- cial products with higher performance, less environment impact, worker safety, productivity improvement, energy conservation, and lower cost than prior generation of products. The breath of his polymer contributions spread in the automotive, refinish, in- dustrial, packaging, photochromic, adhesive and sealants, and mobility sectors and brought more than $9 billion in cumulative sales to PPG. He is named inventor and an author on 530 global patents and publications including 83 granted U.S. Patents and many pending. Dr. Swarup has received numerous PPG internal and external awards. These include, 2008 PPG President Award for develop- ing etch resistance clear coat. His research has been presented to a number of conferences and earned PPG several R&D100, PACE, Surcar, and ACS Hero of the Chemistry Awards. In 2016, he was inducted into prestigious life-long PPG Collegium, an or- ganization of PPG Innovator leaders for significant technology development and commercialization. He is the recipient of 2019 ACS Nation Award in Applied Polymer Science. ABSTRACT : Recent Advancements in Polymer Synthesis and Applications in Coatings In recent years the automotive industry has adopted compact painting process to reduce energy consumption, CO2 genera- tion and operating costs. One such compact process is known as high solid 3-Wet, and it has been published that the 3-Wet process has reduced CO 2 emission by 15-25%, VOC emissions by 10%, and process time by 20-25%. Other painting process is known as waterborne basecoat 1 and waterborne basecoat 2, where the primer layer and the bake associated with it has been completely eliminated. The later process further reduced these desired attributes and also reduced the footprints of the new plants. PPG has developed unique polymer architectures which enabled successful launches of these processes with improved appearance compared to the conventional painting process. In this talk, innovations in polymer synthesis and their application in new automotive painting processes will be discussed in details.

Dear PSCT Members,

the presentation on rheology fundamen-tals and quantification techniques given by Joseph ambrosi of ashland speciality ingredients at the february meeting was very interesting and informative. i was glad to learn about the different types of rheol-ogy modifiers and rheology terminology and

measurement. if you missed this meeting, i recommend you ask Joe to make a presentation at your company. he is an excellent speaker.

We were honored to have some of our past presidents join us at the february meeting. the presidents who attended answered a question i have wondered about for a while: who was hiram P. ball, the namesake of the Psct scholarship? if you are like-wise wondering who hiram ball was, talk to former president cliff schoff—he’s planning on attending the March meeting. Please remember that applications to the hiram P. ball scholarship and steM grant are due March 15. the application may be found at the end of this newsletter and on the Psct website at paintso-ciety.com.

We are honored that shanti swarup, associate fellow at PPg, will be the speaker at the March 9th meeting. Dr. swarup has had fantastic career at PPg, and in addition to being the named inventor on 550 global patents and publications, he has been the recipient of numerous awards from PPg and other organizations. Please join us at roland’s seafood grill in the strip District to hear his presentation on recent advancements in polymer synthesis and applications in coatings. We hope to see you there!
