CONEXPOHere we are againConexpo, the biggest show in the world’s biggest construction equipment market and home to the world’s biggest equipment producers, is always a little bit special.

In this, its 90th anniversary, it is worth looking back at why.

Originally known as the “Road Show”, it was for many years held on a six-year cycle in cold, breezy Chicago with a brief stop in Huston before settling in Las Vegas. What made the show special was that the world’slargest equipment producers, such as CAT, Case, International, John Deere,Grove and P&H, always saved their most important product launches for thebig US exhibition and spent lavishly on exhibits and entertaining customers.

So, while not the biggest construction equipment show in terms of visitor numbers, exhibitors, or even space,Conexpo was, at the time, the most important. Following a period where it lost stature on the internationalstage, Conexpo is back big time this year with a record number of visitors expected and a profile that it hasnot seen for over ten years.

Three years ago the aisles at Conexpo were buzzing with the news that Manitowoc had bought Grove, havingonly recently added Potain to its portfolio, and that Terex, having sold Holland Lift, was effectively quitting theaccess industry. What unexpected announcements will this years Conexpo bring? Only time will tell.

This is an important show for both buyers and manufacturers to meet and assess the relationships that willdictate the performance of each others’ businesses over the next few years. All of the big Crane, Telehandlerand Access manufacturers are here with senior management present and ready to meet customers. Take theopportunity and make the most of it. The next four to five years will be exciting ones. The contacts, deals andrelationships made this week could influence your business for years to come.

Por ello, en su 90ª aniversario merece la pena saber por qué.Originalmente conocida como “Road Show”(Feria de Carretera), se celebró durante muchos años con unaperiodicidad sexenal en la fría ciudad de Chicago, con una breve parada en Huston, antes de celebrarse enLas Vegas. Lo que hacía de esta feria especial era la presencia de los más importantes fabricantes a nivelmundial, como CAT, Case International, John Deere, Grove y P&H, los cuáles siempre se reservaban el lanzamiento de los productos para la feria más importante de EE.UU., y ponían gran atención en las exposiciones y en el entretenimiento a los clientes.

Traditional all-terrainsinclude the AC140shown last year atBauma and the AC160,a crane well suited toAmerican road regulationsthanks to its axle spacing. On the truckside, look for the popularTT775 truck crane. Alsoask to view the latest

IC-1 crane control system and seethe level of information available tothe modern crane driver as well asits data logging capabilities.

Now we cross the road to the Goldlot, and our first stop is Link Belt: avery strong contender in the truck-mounted market here in the USA.Link Belt has its new 90-ton/81-tonne HTC8690 on display. This model also has a version, the HHT that offers rear-wheel steer. The Company isnot well known for its all-terrains,but it does produce two models, thelatest being the ATC 3130 on fiveaxles. The company claims that it isone of the few ATs that can travelon site when fully rigged.

Next we head for the far corner ofthe Gold lot where Liebherr, one ofthe pioneers of the all-terrain concept that persisted through theearly days when the technology

was still unproven and unreliable. The company’s all-terrain range now extends to 15 modelsfrom the twin-axle 30-ton LTM1030-2.1, right up to the 800 tonne LTM 1800.

The new product to look for is theLTM 1090-5.1 a 190ft/58mlongboomed 115 tonner, that can carryup to 15t of counterweight and stilloffer a GVW of under 132,000lbs/60 tonnes.

Also don’t miss a look at the Licconload indication system that adjuststo various boom configurationsautomatically.

Now we pass between the Sanyand Pettibone stands to look at theGrove models on the ManitowocGroup stand. The 11-model GMKrange is produced in Germany andextends from 20 tonnes to the 450tonne GMK 7450. The latest modelto hit the streets is the 165-ton/130-tonne GMK 5130 (GMK 5165),which appears to have scored a hit

in many European markets thanks toits 60 metre/197ft main boom andability to travel with a respectableamount of counterweight on such a compact chassis.

Also being unveiled on on the Grovestand is the TMS 890E an 80 ton/70tonne truck crane which takes thecompany’s range of trucks to four.

Continuing in the same direction(cutting though Snorkel and XL trailersstands) we reach Tadano, where we will find at least one NorthAmerican-style truck-mounted craneand three Tadano Faun all-terrains,topped by the ATF 160-G5. This200-ton/160-tonne five-axle modelhas almost 200ft/66m of boom. Besure to ask about the company’s boomdeflection device, which adjusts theboom angle in order to prevent theloaded boom deflection from swingingthe load as it leaves the ground.

The all-terrain craneconcept originated inEurope and is still verymuch a European-builtproduct. However, theall-terrains continue togrow in popularity inNorth America and theproduct type is wellrepresented here atConexpo. The truck-crane, which is almostan extinct species inEurope, is also verymuch alive and kickinghere in the USA.

This time we start ourtour with Terex in theNorth Hall, Terex offers a range of all-terrains,which encompass theDemag and PPM regularall-terrains, along withDemag’s City cranes – a cross between a rough-terrain and an all-terrain. The TerexWaverly American styletruck cranes are also represented.

Models to look out for onthe Terex stand includethe AC55 City, a true citycrane but without theusual compromises. Thismodel offers the compactdimensions of an RT butwithout the boom overhang. It sports a double cab and has thespeed and road mannersof an AT while maximumreach is 200ft/60m.

The Conexpo skyline you will note differs from the big Europeanshows, have you noticed what is missing? The preponderance oftower cranes. While the American market for tower cranes is growing, the volume is tiny compared to France and Germany. Our guide also includes specialist aluminum trailer mounted craneswhich cross over into the smaller end of the self erecting towercrane market.

Some of the biggest names in the tower crane business are here, beginning with Liebherr, in the far corner of the Gold Lot. Liebherr started off in the crane business with tower cranes, and they still represent a major part of its business, the company produce a full range including a truck mounted self erector. On the stand will be one of the larger models the 550 EC-H20 .with 205ft/ 62 metres under hook and over 265ft/ 80 metres working radius.

Then on to the Potain/Manitowoc group stand where models from eachof the company’s ranges are represented, including the MDT 80 Toplessand the popular IGO range of Self erectors. While the self erector concept is still new to North America, take up is gathering pace.

We now head towards Link Belt, opposite the Link Belt stand you willfind Albert Böcker, a German based producer of high quality trailermounted aluminium cranes, designed for a wide variety of light liftingwork, on applications where small self erecting tower cranes might beused. On display is the AHK271200 with up to 90ft/27m tip height and2,600lbs/1,200kgs lift capacity.

From Albert Böcker we cross the JLG stand diagonally, taking in its newrange of trailer mounted aerials that include a lifting attachment and turndown the aisle between Rayco and Daewoo to see the Spanish basedLinden Comansa, the originator of the flat top tower crane design. On the stand are an LC5211 and the company’s top of the range 21LC550 capable of lifting almost 9,000 lbs/four tonnes at 260ft/80metres.

There are many ways to reach overhead work safely. One preferred method is to useaerial work platforms (AWPs) due to their versatility, productivity and ease of use.They can be, positioned precisely where they’re needed, and quickly elevated directlyto an overhead area. When the work is done, they are lowered and driven off. Workersdon’t have to climb ladders or scaffolding and there’s no dismantling of structureswhen the work is done.

AWPs are tools used by skilled tradesmen to help them do their jobs. Unfortunately,unlike some tools, users are rarely taught how to use them properly. They appear to besimple to operate, so many first-time or inexperienced users simply climb aboard andstart using the unit, it is this type of person that can be a danger to both himself and tothose around him. Without proper training, AWPs can be dangerous.

Recently the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), a not-for-profit organizationwith Manufacturing and rental members from around the world, established AerialWork Platform Training, Inc. (AWPT) a US subsidiary headed by Dennis Eckstine.

Falls can Kill Every year falls from height cost lives as well as $ millions, The statistics tell the story, operator training can help reduce this cost.As in most countries, the American construction industry had more fatalities during2003 than any other industry according to the latest data from the United StatesDepartment of Labor. The 1,126 construction deaths accounted for more than one inevery five workplace fatalities. Specialty trade contractors recorded 56 percent of thedeaths. Falls were the cause of over 32 percent of them. Clearly, this is a serious problem.

Almost all construction projects involve work above ground level at heights from 10ft(3 metres) to 100ft (33metres) or more. Unfortunately, many people don’t follow safeoperating procedures when they’re working at height. Whether it’s because theyignore safety regulations, or because they weren’t properly trained in the first place,more OSHA citations were issued for violations relating to work at height than anyother. Of all citations issued in the construction industry from October 2003 throughSeptember 2004, violations of scaffolding, ladders and fall protection-related standards accounted for over 42 percent of them, and a whopping 51 percent of the total fines imposed!

The program that AWPT, Inc. provides is modeled on one developed by IPAF in Europe,but tailored to meet State, Provincial and Federal requirements including ANSI, OSHA,and CSA. Training is in English or Spanish and the curriculum includes a mixture oftheory, practice, and testing to assure that training is understood. The actual training, it is done by member companies who have met stringent qualifications and havebecome certified as an AWPT Authorized Training Center.

Upon completion of the training program, AWPT issues a PAL (Powered AccessLicensed-Registration) card stating that the recipient has been trained in the safe operation of a particular type of aerial work platform. In the past year alone, over40,000 operators received a PAL card from one of more than 150 training centersworldwide. That figure is expected to increase in 2005 as more training centers are certified.

AWPT vice-president Dennis Eckstine said, “Operator training is good business foreveryone. Not only does it increase worker safety and productivity, it also adds to corporate profitability by reducing downtime, lowering insurance premiums, minimizing damage to machines, and providing greater protection from civil and criminal liability. It’s a win-win situation”.

AWPT/ IPAF

Las PEMP son herramientas utilizadas por hombres cualificados que les ayudan a hacer su trabajo. Desafortunadamente, a diferencia de otras herramientas, losusuarios raramente son enseñados a cómo utilizarlos adecuadamente. Parecensimples de manejar, muchos primeros usuarios o inexpertos usuarios simple-mente se montan en la plataforma y la empiezan a utilizar, es el tipo de personaque es un peligro tanto para ellos como para los que están a su alrededor. Sin laformación adecuada, las PEMP pueden ser peligrosas.

Recientemente la Federación Internacional de Plataformas de Acceso (IPAF), una organización sin ánimo de lucro formada por fabricantes y alquiladores detodo el mundo, estableció la Aerial Work Platform Training, Inc. (AWPT), unaempresa subsidiaria estadounidense encabezada por Dennis Eckstine.

El programa que AWPT, Inc proporciona está basado en el desarrollado por IPAF en Europa, pero hecho a medida para adaptarse a los requisitos estatales,provinciales y federales, incluyendo ANSI, OSHA y CSA.

Self Propelled boom lifts include, a wide range of types, including straight or stick,Articulating, Rough Terrain or slab, electric orIC power and those units that are only self propelled in the stowed position with outriggers required at height.

The JLG stand is as good a place to begin the tour,the market leading producer with the industry’smost extensive boom product line. Ranging from 30ft/9m narrow aisle industrial electric models up to the 150ft/46m 150HX. No new JLG models are on display, but there is plenty ofchance to inspect the model range and to see thehost of attachments, options and accessories thatJLG is now offering on its boom products.

After JLG head to the back of the lot and oppositeManitowoc you will find Ui Distribution, with theUi/UpRight range of products, the boom modelsare back in production following the relocation ofthe company’s main plant, models range from apopular 38ft/11.5m articulated up to an 80ft/26mstick boom.

You should note that two companies in the Goldlot, Manitou and Tadano also produce a range ofboom lifts, but neither markets them actively inNorth America and so no display is planned, however, international staff will take enquiries.

The company is looking to launch in Europe so those looking for products to represent might do well to stop by.

Self propelled Scissor lifts are the most widely used form ofpowered access, the number ofproducers has fallen in the recentpast but the range available has increased, all of the majormanufacturers are present at this weeks show.

We begin at the UpRight stand atthe back of the Gold lot, Ui as it isnow known in the USA, was at onetime the largest producer of scissorlifts and was responsible for keydevelopments. Look out for the1930X, previously the MX19, manyclaim that this unit is still the best19ft micro scissor. The company’sbig scissors are also back in production.

We cross Manitowoc to Snorkel,better known for its booms, thecompany has a decent range of

scissors, that have a solid following,thanks to its simple straightforwardeasy to repair technology that gives them a good reputation for reliability.

From Snorkel head to Skyjack oneof the top three producers in NorthAmerica, you will also see some ofits refurbished models, the companynow offers a variety of rebuild programmes, mainly on larger units.The big scissors with their self centering scissor linkage offer high capacity with large dual deck extensions.

We begin our Tour of the Trailer lift products in the centre of the Gold Lot with JLG. For many of you this will be the first opportunity to see the two newtrailer models that the companyannounced in June last year, the T-350with 35ft/10.5 metre platform height whilethe larger T500 offers up to 50ft/15metres.The two units offer faster towing speeds,up to 65 mph/105kph, and a wide working envelope.

From JLG head towards the main buildingsand take the first left at stand 348 and keepstraight ahead until you see UpRight, nowknown in this part of the world as UI it produces two popular models with 38ft/11.5 metres platform height and 50ft/15metres respectively, the 50 is a second generation full featured unit. If you then takea cheeky short cut across the Manitowocstand you will find Snorkel, which produces a well proven range built to be simple andrugged for rental operations. It plans to showa new trailer lift model at Conexpo so do stopand take a look. Then it is back towards theentrance and you will pass Haulotte. While it is not planning to exhibit trailers at the show, you can always collect abrochure or discuss the products.

Next stop is indoors so cross the footbridgeon your right is the Silver lot and you can’tmiss the massive Terex stand, on which youwill find Genie, with its TZ, two model rangeof trailers including the two units launched in2004 the TZ34/20 with 34ft/10.3 metres andthe TZ50 with 50ft/15m platform heights.Finally cross the path towards Central Hall 2 take the first door for Hall 2 and headtowards the left and stand 4525 where youwill find Bil-Jax, the employee owned company which is showing two new trailerlifts, one the 36/32T telescopic with 36ft/11metre platform height the other is a 50ft/17mSEV-Aerial model which Bil-Jax distributes in the USA.

The company produces a whole range of uniquetruck-mounted units, including theHi Reach range with heights of up to 160ft/48m many of them available as insulated units.Specials are also possible and one design incorporates a multi-telescopic vertical mast onthe top of which the slew ring for the top boom is mounted.

Now off to a company in the sametarget market and just a short strolldown the aisle, opposite JCB. Altec are reputedly the world’slargest producer for truck- and van-mounted aerial work platforms.The range is aimed at five key markets: utilities, telecommunications,tree care, lighting and signage contractors. The range is vast andincludes both straight telescopicand articulating.

Also for a specialist truck mount take a look at Hyrdraon stand G-404 the producers of underbridge units.

Truck-mounted aerials are not as well represented at Conexpoas they are at European showsand yet some of the biggest producers in the world in termsof unit volume are based here.

While four producers are represented,Palfinger, which recently took over truck-mounted producer Bison, has not yet decided on launch plans for its aerial devices in North America and therefore does not have units on display.

We begin at Time Manufacturing,the company that owns theVersalift and Condor brandnames. Time is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Condor is known for making some of the highesttruck-mounted models available.The current range tops out at205ft/62m. On display is the 170-S with 170 ft/52m working height.

Also check the CTA-104-I thatoffers a short jacking capabilityenabling the lift to operate withoutthe outriggers fully extended on one side. The Versalift VO-40-MHI material handling aerial is a combined platform and jib with acapacity of 2,200lbs/998kg at up to 103ft./31m work heights.

A big construction show is not thebest forum for these units, whichare more industrial orientated,although many are used by thefinishing trades. Push-around liftsare one the most economicalforms of powered access, butbest used in maintenance work.

We start our tour on the Haulottestand. The company has a strongrange of mast booms, some withjibs and some with deck extensions.The mast boom range is marketedunder the Star banner, with fivemodels that qualify as full-mastbooms, along with the Star 13 (Star 6 in Europe) which debuts in the USA at this show. However, the Star 6 is closer to the scissorlift category as it has no outreach or rotation.

From here we head towards the back of the lot. AlongsideManitowoc, is UI/ UpRight.It produces the MB mast boomrange that includes 20 and 26ft (6 and 8 m) versions, including a32-inch (82cm) wide model for single doorways. UpRight also has a range of Aluminum push-around lifts the UL’s that

unusually use a box section mastfor additional rigidity.

From here head to the market leaderin the mast boom sector and yet themost recent entrant, JLG. At Bauma2004 JLG announced that it hadacquired the Manlift Toucan range,which has been the market leaderfor several years, Now shown forthe first time in the USA as the JLG-Toucan line. The highly popular24ft (8m) Toucan 8 is on the stand, The Toucan is different from othersin that it uses a forklift type mastrather than a steel box section. Bothcamps claim advantages for theirdesigns, in reality both work well. In addition to the new Toucans, JLGhas a vast range of aluminum mastedproducts, including a full pusharound range with self propelledversions and stock pickers. If youare looking for this type of productthen this is the stand not to miss.

Manitou make some superb mastbooms, but as they are not yet marketed in North America thecompany is not intending to havethem on display, but details are available.

Now we head indoors to the Centralhall and Bil-Jax, it makes a rangeof push around units that differ fromthe others in that they are all Steel,this makes them less costly, andthey claim, more rugged and thusbetter suited to construction tasks.The additional weight does limit theheight attainable and they are not asPortable as their aluminium cousins,but they have their place. In additionthe company has a new self propelled unit the ESP 19 which it targets at stock picking.

A crowded and interwoven market place.This growing market is well represented at Conexpo with noless that 12 manufacturers and19 different brands present. It isby far the most crowded sectorin the guide. Highly active brandmarketing, badging agreementsand strategic alliances betweencompanies complicate the products on offer. So if you feelyou have seen the same productalready, but in a different colouror with different name, don’tworry you probably have!

We begin on the first stand in theGold lot; Bobcat markets the lineup originally acquired fromSambron in France. The producthas been significantly refined anddeveloped since its takeover byBobcat. If you cross to fellow IRgroup company Ingersoll Rand’s

A short step away isManitou, one of the top

two producers of telehandlersworldwide. It recently launched two new additions to its NorthAmerican MT range the 6642 andMT8044. Also look for the ultracompact European-styleManiscopic 523 and ask about itsdeal with Gehl, the company is distributing some Gehl models inthe USA. Manitou is also now offering fully ANSI-compliant aerialwork platform attachments onsome models.

The Haulotte stand is a step away,Haulotte claims a strong acceptancefor its European-built telehandlerline. The range, which consists ofall low-profile models, now extendsup to 56ft/17m lift height.

Head past Manitowoc to Pettibone:a pioneer of rough-terrain reachlifts. Its products are rough, tough,no-frills rugged machines. Pettiboneoffer traverse versions with a sliding

Cross the JLG stand to marketleader JCB, which has several unitsfrom its ten-model North Americanline up among its massive display.For something completely different:cross the aisle to Carelift.

Canada-based Carelift builds theZoom Boom range and has threeunits on its stand, including thenew 32,000lb/14.5tonne capacityZB32032, with a lift height of32ft/10m. The model will beunveiled at the start of the show.

Close by is just one of Caterpillar’sseveral stands at Conexpo. On display will be its latest models the TH210 and 215. Finally the lastGold lot stop is next door at New

Holland/Kobelco, part of CNH. In Europe New Holland sells a specially designed branded rangebuilt by Manitou.

Cross the road to the North Hall tothe next stop, the Gehl stand wherethe widest range of new models isto be launched under a strategicalliance with Manitou. Gehl hasintroduced the CT-Series comprisingfive models, the CT5-16, CT5-16Turbo, CT6-18 Low Profile, CT6-18 Turbo, and CT7-23 Turbo. The new models join the Dyna liftand RS ranges.

Also in the North Hall is Mustang, adivision of Gehl. On display are thenew 642 and 844 models Mustangtelehandlers that have a patentedWork Platform System (WPS) thatclaims to make it safe to use awork platform attached to the forks.“Once the WPS is activated, the system senses the attitude of the machine, neutralizes thetransmission, applies the parkingbrake, disables the fork tilt and auxiliary hydraulic circuits, andrestricts use of the frame levellingcircuit. A remote shutdown switch is also included.

We then head over to Terex, it has three new models and has recently launched two regular models: the Telelift 3512 and 4010with 7,700lbs/3.5tonnes and8,800lbs/4tonnes lift capacityrespectively, along with lift heightsof 40ft/12m and 33ft/10m plus a360-degree rotation model theGirolift 4518 with 60ft/18m liftheight. We start the tour at Altec, acrossthe aisle from JCB. Altec is bestknown for its market-leading rangeof aerial lifts for the utility markets,including insulated booms. Thecompany also produces two boomtrucks with 26- and a 35-ton liftcapacity and 127ft/39m of reach.

A short walk down the aisle bringsyou to Elliot, a company that alsotargets utilities, but with a widerboom truck range. The latest modelto look out for is the 32-ton 32105,with 105ft /35m main boom.

There is a vast array of cranes at Conexpo designed originally for loading the truck on which they were fitted. However the products have grown to the pointwhere many of them dominatetheir vehicles and can handle awide variety of lifting duties.

This sector is unusual in that thereis an almost total divide betweenEurope and North America. In Europe the articulated or knuckle

Crane electronics, including remotecontrols and rated load indicators arethe fastest area of development inthe crane industry. The ability to control a crane at a distance, completewith a detailed read out well beyondeven what was available in the cab a

few years back, isalready with us. The information nowprovided to the operator is improvingevery year. Add to

this the sophistication of data logging and it is clear that the craneis moving into the aerospace age.

Overload devices are also becomingthe norm on aerial lifts, at least in Europe, and several exhibitors offer off-the-shelf solutions to platform load measurement.

Many jobs require reaching overheadareas. Sometimes it's no more thansix feet (2 metres) off the ground,other times it can be over a 100 feet(33 metres). No matter how high,reaching overhead areas efficientlyand safely is essential.

In years past, climbing ladders orerecting scaffolding was the usualmethod for working at height. Today aerial work platforms areincreasingly used. These machinesquickly elevate tradesmen directly to the area wasting no time erectingscaffolding or energy climbing to the job.

Aerial work platforms can be purchasedor rented and are available in a varietyof styles and sizes to fit almost anyapplication. The leading manufacturersoffer over 60 different models includingtrailer lifts, slab and rough terrain scissorlifts, and telescoping and articulatingboom lifts to name a few. Platform heightsnow extend to 150 feet (45 metres).

With such a wide variety, there's amodel that will match your needswhether you're using it indoors or outdoors, on a solid surface or drivingthrough mud. Selecting the rightmachine though requires more than justknowing how high you want to reach.If you don't consider ALL your needs,it can cost you both time and money.

Obviously platform height is the numberone criteria. But height alone is uselessif because of job site conditions, youcan't position the machine directly underthe work area. In such a case you needto consider both height and horizontaloutreach. You need to determine whereto position the machine, then you cancalculate the combination of height

and horizontal outreach you need toaccess the work area.

Other things to consider when selectingthe right machine for the job include:

The power source; choices includegas, diesel, dual fuel or electric.Electric units are not only useful forindoor work with heights up to 60ft(18 metres) they can be useful outdoors where noise is a concern.

The operating surface; Is it a concreteslab or soft earth? Is it level or sloped?

Will it support the machines weight?Boom lifts with additional outreach or rough terrain scissor lifts with outriggers may be required.

The operating location: Is it a congestedarea that requires a tight turning radiusor minimal tail swing? Are there anyfloor loading limits? Are there any lowoverhead obstructions to reach aroundunder or through? If so an articulatingjib might be needed.

The work requirement: How manypeople are required for the applicationand how much material is needed?

This will dictate the platform size andcapacity required.

Once you have decided on what typeand size of machine that best meetsyour needs, consider what tools youwill be using to do the work. Along withelectrical outlets and air lines on theplatform, today's leading manufacturersoffer a variety of optional features thatwill increase your productivity whenyou reach the overhead area.

After reviewing the job requirements,you will need to be able to move thelift from its point of delivery on site tothe work area. Here too there aremany things to consider.

Look at the terrain, how level is it arethere steep slopes to negotiate? If soyou may need a machine with moregradeability. If the ground is uneven,you may need a machine with moreground clearance. If it's soft or muddyyou may need 4-wheel drive or a trackedundercarriage. Tire options might alsobe a consideration, including foam filled,pneumatic, high floatation "turf tires",or solid non-marking tires for use onwood flooring or tile and marble surfaces.

Snorkel, Skyjack, JLG and Genie alloffer one programme or another tocustomers wishing to reconditionmachines from their fleet or whopick up a bargain at auction andwant to have them restored.

There is a difference according toANSI A92.5 between reconditioningand remanufacturing. It seems thatwhen an original manufacturer strips down one of its machines and then rebuilds it with new parts,this is remanufacturing and the unitmust then meet all of the latestANSI standards.

The line between remanufacturingand restoration appears to be quite fine, only JLG openly offers to “remanufacture”. Most manufacturers provide various levels of “reconditioning” or “refurbishment” and at the top endit is hard to spot the difference.

The cost of transport and labourmean that rebuilds are only viablefor larger scissors and boom lifts.The results though can be spectacularand seem reasonably priced,depending of course on what youhave done. A ten-year-old scissor,for example, can be made to look new and even come with asix-month warranty for as little as$12,000 plus, of course, the cost of the machine. However, even the slowest depreciators will have written such a unit down to nearzero. The manufacturers generallyclaim that the reconditioned unitswill have an economic lifespan offive to ten years, not far off theoriginal expectation!

Snorkel primarily restores its ownbooms from the 1980s and early90s, the machines it turns out lookremarkably close to some of theunits coming off the line today. The performance might not be thesame, but the units will reach thesame heights and be just as safeand reliable, allowing rental companies to make a decent returnon poor rates, or to encourage endusers to trade up. Ask to see its

half restored unit on the stand.

Skyjack has gone fully into therebuild process establishing a separate rebuild business unit thisyear. It also offers to rebuild boomsfrom JLG, Genie and Snorkel as well as its own. As with Snorkel,Skyjack’s reconditioning facility willinspect a used machine and quotevarious levels of restoration,

The View from the top of theStratoshpere tower..fantastic. If you are a little unbalanced there are also some crazy amusement rides.

If you enjoy the Great Outdoors,then you can’t get much greaterthan hiking to the floor of theGrand Canyon. It is one of thoseclassic experiences that gives a real sense of personalachievement and leaves youdreamy and watery eyed everytime someone mentions it. Morethan anything, it is too grand forany lens to capture so you justhave to see if for yourself.

It is very ‘do-able’ so long as youtake a little time out for some preliminary preparation and youhave a reasonable level of fitness.You can hike down to the Canyonfloor and back up in two days butif you have the time take an extraday for exploration (or well earnedleg rest) it is well worth it.

• It is a mile (1.6km) deep and 10 miles(16km) wide

• It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World

You will be hard pushed to findanything so grand...anywhere else

Canyon Anxiety

Canyon Anxiety is a recognizedmedical term which sounds ridiculous until you experience it!It is the feeling of being ‘seriously overwhelmed’ at the prospect ofhiking out of the canyon. I’m notsaying the Rangers are unsympatheticbut their response is normally “if you didn’t rent a mule thenthere’s only one way out”.

Hiking down the South Kaibab Trail

If you descend using the SouthKaibab Trail (7.7 miles/12.4km)there is no water until you reachthe floor -you must carry all youneed on your back. Take energybars, fruit and high energy drinkssuch as Gatorade for those ‘weaker’ moments. Hiking Up the Bright Angel Trail

We opted for the Bright Angel Trail(9.3 miles/15km) because it offersthree water stops and shade. It may be a little longer but it’sgentler on the knees!

EssentialsGood footwear, preferably hikingboots with good socks. You alsoneed head cover, shades, and along sleeved shirt or ‘T’. And don’tforget the sunscreen.
