Ergonomists are those thatclosely examine and assess thejob description of an employeeand the demands of the worker.Workplace ergonomics have a lotto do with the safety ofemployees, both long term andshort term. Ideally, workplacesshould be designed in such a waythat employees are comfortable,safe and do not over-extendthemselves, while workingproductively.
Back PainThis is one of the most commonmedical conditions that areexperienced in the workplace.Joint and spinal pain is alsocommon.
FactDid you know that a person’s bodycan only tolerate sitting in oneposition for a maximum of twentyminutes? If you are guilty of sittingfor long periods of time, you willtend to suffer from back pain. Thereason for this is that elasticity isneeded in our tissues. Thereforeif you are sitting for a long time,this elasticity is not present. Itbuilds up stress in muscles andjoints and causes a lot ofdiscomfort.
To curb this, move intodifferent seating positions toincrease elasticity, and do thisfrequently.
Tips for a healthy and safeworkplace experience• Your keyboard should be
placed so that your arms are parallel to your thighs.
• Do not use a laptop computeron your lap. Place it on your desk.
• Get a comfortable chair so that your upper and lower back is supported.
• Take breaks, walk around, andexercise yourself. This will mean that you are releasing all the tension in your body.
• Make sure there is ample space in your workstation, sothat you do not have to strainyourself or feel confined.
• Keep your computer mouse within easy reaching distanceand do not grip it tightly.
