What do we expect from you?

Commitment. You have opted for this subject and you need to show that you are able to handle the rigour of A level study. This will be quite different from your GCSE course where the onus now is very much on you working independently using your initiative to achieve the objectives and being prepared to persevere with drawing and making skills to raise your personal standards.

A desire to succeed. Design can be a very competitive world where only the best survive. Loughborough University for example typically have five applications for every one place. How much do you want to be that one?

Originality and innovation. Think about how many entrepreneurs are rejected in the Dragons Den. New situations and creative forms will be key both to the assignments on the course.

High skill base. The majority of the coursework marks are awarded to designing/sketching skills and making skills which can be developed through practice and experience. Expect to attend regular after school sessions to improve and expand your own skills.

Meet deadlines. You will feel the full weight of the sanctions system which could lead you to being removed from the course if the content of your work is not handed in on time and/or not of a sufficient A level standard.

Hints and TipsKeep the research really concise, this is not an exercise to show how much research you can undertake, it is only the findings that we are interested in. However you must substantiate what you say and support it with visual references.

You must reflect the design movement or designer with your own designing without imitation. We will be looking for clear links to your research.

The standard of sketching must be good. You must work hard on this aspect if it is not your strength. The folder work is a seriously important element of the coursework.

There is a mass of product designing examples on the internet, try key wording an image search on design sketching etc. There are tutorials and all sorts of styles you can view. Practice copy sketching to develop your skills till you are more confident to draw new designs. The key to good drawing is observation so looking at line weight, rendering techniques and the layout of a design sheet will do you no harm.

An excellent website is www.idsketching.com look in the sketchbook menu (you may recognise some of the examples), be sure to follow their recommended web resources listed down the right hand column of their web pages.

Unit 2 COURSEWORKPLAY EQUIPMENT

Design Context:A rotational moulding manufacturer wishes to expand its range of products by breaking into the play equipment market.

As a product designer you are required to design and develop a concept idea/model for an item of domestic outdoor play equipment to be used in the garden by pre-school children.

Unit 2 COURSEWORKPLAY EQUIPMENT

Research Tasks:

• In order to prevent imitation and/or pre-conceived ideas, Present an overview summary of different types of garden play and play equipment. (Approx 1 sheet)

•Mind map and analyse potential themes for play equipment. Make a decision on the theme you would like to adopt stating your reasons for choice. (Approx 1 sheet)

•You need to develop an awareness of health and safety issues relating to outdoor play equipment. Produce a key point list of the British Standard BS EN 71 Part 8 as it affects your designing. (Approx 1 sheet)

Unit 2 COURSEWORKPLAY EQUIPMENT

Presentation and Submission:

•Your work must be presented as a PowerPoint file in A3 Landscape (use 41 x 28.5 cm) to be compatible with the school network.

•Design a standardised master page as your ‘house style’ for the project. This will need to include: your name, the title at the top of this screen and have provision for individual sheet titles and page numbers.

•Do not be wasteful, you need to compress the information onto the sheets. Text should generally be around 10pt and a good tip is to use 100% zoom to get some idea of print out size.

•Your work is to be submitted first taught lesson back after the summer holidays.

Good Luck
