UKRAINE CLIMBING UP THE VALUE CHAIN LADDER
WHY UKRAINIAN FRUITS ARE SO SPECIAL AND TASTY?
Here are some scientifically confirmed facts:
Ukraine is a very dry, and, consequently, sunny country. In the key production regions annual precipita-tion averages from 400 to 700mm and most it comes outside of vegetation season. Moreover, thanks to its high altitude, there could be up to 15 hrs of sunlight per day in many regions of Ukraine! Thus, our fruits and vegetables are exposed to much more sun than in other countries leading to better BRIX;
Ukraine has a much greater variation between day and night temperatures than other European coun-tries, helping to develop better colouring of fruits and deeper taste!
We use less chemicals to protect our fruits and vegetables than most other European countries thanks to our dry climate, thus, our fruits are healthier and cleaner!
We could grow premium quality of nearly every variety of apples thanks to the very warm climate with great colouring possibilities!
Firmness of Ukrainian apples to sustain long distance transportation is hard to match thanks to these climatic benefits and proper technologies used.
There will be more apples coming from Ukraine every year as most of our orchards are no more than 8-9 years old and we do use the most advanced technologies of production.
While we offer premium quality fruits we could be very price competitive in this category thanks to lower costs of inputs, energy, labour and land.
We have access to deep water ports in the Black Sea and could ship fruits and vegetables nearly any-where relatively inexpensively.
FRUIT EXPORTS
Ukraine has exported up to 150,000 tonnes of apples per season in the past but nearly all of it went to the Russian market. Today Ukraine is exploring new markets for these apples, exporting already to the EU, Middle East and South-East Asia. In 2017/18 season Apple exports exceeded 42 thousand tonnes despite reduced harvest due to spring frost. In 2018 Ukraine is expected to have around 120-150,000 tonnes of high quality apples available for exports. Total apple production in the country exceeds 1 million tonnes and is growing rapidly.
Ukraine is the third largest exporter of raspberries in Europe and the most dynamically developing producer and exporter of berries in the world. Annually Ukraine exports around 55,000 tonnes of fresh, frozen and dried berries in fresh equivalent.
Ukraine is also a large exporter of blueberries and of a wide range of other berries. Most of the product is exported to the EU frozen and fresh and most of the producers are HACCP certified while many growers have GlobalGAP certification. Ukraine is also a major exporter of organic berries: wild and cultivated.
ONIONS AND GARLIC
Ukraine is a large exporter of yellow onions. Varieties grown in the south of Ukraine thanks to its favourable climate are comparable in taste to Spanish onions and are usually valued higher than onions from the Netherlands. Large scale of growers and high efficiency of production makes Ukraine unique and competitive, as you can contract the grower directly, who can handle production, storage, sorting, packing and logistics.
Garlic is one of the most traditional products in Ukraine and local varieties have unique taste charac-teristics, distinctly different from Chinese. Ukraine’s garlic is preferred by a variety of food processors in Europe and local production is trying to keep up with the growing demand. Over the past four years Ukraine’s commercial garlic production is more than tripled and is expected to grow very fast over the upcoming decade.
ORGANIC PRODUCEEach fifth organic roll in the EU is baked from Ukrainian wheat, making it one of the key suppliers of organic cereals to the EU. Ukraine is also exporting significant volumes of organically certified vegeta-ble oils, soybeans, oilmeals, apple juice concentrate and frozen berries. Recently Ukrainian suppliers started exporting value-added and ready to consume organic products in retail packaging such as grouts, breakfast cereals, vegetable oils, tomato paste, etc. Nearly 100% of the organic produce is exported to the EU and Switzerland although some volumes are also supplied to the USA and Canada. All organically products are certified according to EU organic standards by authorized certifiers.
WALNUTS
Ukraine exports around 40,000 tonnes of walnuts annually, remaining the largest Europe-an exporter of this product. Globally only USA, Mexico and Chile export more walnuts then Ukraine. Middle East, Central Asia and the EU remain the key buyers of Ukrainian walnuts. In 2018-2022 large area of new intensive walnut orchards will come into bearing fruits and exports will increase significantly.
GREENHOUSE VEGETABLES
Ukraine is rapidly expending exports of organi-cally grown vegetables, primarily tomatoes, to the EU thanks to very advanced production technologies, very strict quality control, favour-able climatic conditions and competitive prices. Leading growers are putting emphases on the tastiest and unique varieties of tomatoes on the market to appeal to the demand EU consumers. EU buyers also value the fact that we grow perfect quality tomatoes without any crop protection chemicals.
