Many thanks to the nearly 400 alumni, parents, and friends who have traveled with CC between 2014 and 2017. Often the most memorable highlights of any itinerary are the people we meet and the experiences we share along the way, regardless of the destination. Traveling with other alumni, parents, or those connected to CC, we find ourselves in just the right company — intelligent, adventurous, and engaged with the world. CC people repeatedly choose curiosity about the unknown over fear of the unknown. After all, as Mark Twain said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of [humankind] and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

On the following pages, enjoy a look back on where we’ve been and then look forward to where we’re going. You’ll find planned itineraries for 2018 and beyond. For the most up-to-date information on these and other trips, please bookmark: https://www.coloradocollege.edu/travelstudy and be sure to provide CC with your most up-to-date email address as many trips are promoted electronically.

“It was great fun to be in a magical,

beautiful, and invigorating place

physically. It was a treat (and honor)

being with other inquisitive intelligent

minds and having the opportunity

to learn about so many different

‘academic’ areas specific to the

location. And best of all, I made new

friends and they all have a tie to CC!”

— Becky Sisk Foerschler ’80

“Interesting people. Gorgeous

scenery. I liked having our expert

geologist right there to explain what

we were viewing. Didn’t have to think

about anything in terms of food/

transportation/directions/what to see

— loved that, all those details were

taken care of which let me just focus

on enjoying the trip, which

was fabulous…”

— Kim Stern P’18

“Wonderful group of intelligent and

curious people. Many of us made

lifelong friends.”

— Mary Preuss ’76

“We really can’t tell you what we

liked best. It was all world class.”

— Lloyd ’76 and Linda Hayne

“This was going to be a great

trip anyway, but the incredible

knowledge and insights that

Professor Lindau was able to

share informally with one-on-one

conversations, small groups,

and formal lectures made this

an amazing once-in-a-lifetime

experience.”

— Keith Engel P’18

“The CC magic does not stop.”

— Michael G. Sawaya ’71, P’05

“Well-organized overall, great

group of people to share a week

with, nice selection of inns and

restaurants. Well done! It was

especially nice to reconnect with

others who valued the open/

engaged spirit of a CC education.

The trip confirmed why I enjoyed

my time at CC so much.”

— Patricia Aronstein ’80

“The trip was a great combination

of riding, hiking, learning, laughing,

relaxing over cocktails and great

food, and making new friends.”

— Maryl Blackwell P’17

ARGENTINIAN PATAGONIA January 5-16, 2018 with Professor of History Peter Blasenheim. “Brazilianist though I am, I’ve developed a secondary field in Argentine history over the years and I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to share what will be a marvelous learning experience and much fun. Recall that Argentina is the Latin American country where the traditions of the European Enlightenment and classical liberalism have sunk their roots most deeply, but these traditions have clashed, sometimes violently, with the region’s authoritarian political tradition, which predated independence and is still very much alive. This collision explains what one Argentine historian calls ‘the secret of the configuration of the Argentine political spirit,’ which, in turn, pervades the country’s history, its politics, its literature and every aspect of its culture — including what is perhaps Argentina’s outstanding contribution to world culture — the tango, a dance form that entangles these two traditions in an erotic embrace but does not allow the two partners to look each other in the eye. Wouldn’t it be splendid to be together and to talk about all these things in Buenos Aires and Patagonia?”

We will begin in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires before departing for Patagonia, a vast land that has been shaped by time, wind, and glacial movements. Highlights include colonies of elephant seals, migrating whales, and guanacos, the relatives of camels, at Valdes Peninsula. See the largest warm weather Magellanic penguins at Punta Tombo. Gaze in awe at the magnificent glaciers of glimmering ice at Los Glaciares National Park. From local estancias (sheep ranches) to comfortable hotels, this tour will delight and surprise you.

July 3-July 9, 2018 with Eric Perramond, associate professor and director of Southwest studies. Some believe that Burgundy is the most fascinating and complex wine region in the world, largely because it is also the most personal and individualistic. Nowhere else does wine produce such an expression of the soil and of the person who made it. It is wine at its peak but also at its most artisanale. Join CC Professor Eric Perramond on this fascinating walking journey through this beguiling part of France. Meander through vineyards, meet some of the most important winemakers in the region, and visit off-the-beaten-path places with special access provided for Colorado College participants. Professor Perramond grew up in a bicultural, bilingual family (English/French) and is an environmental geographer with interests in water, land, climate, and livelihoods. His interest in wine reflects a devotion to understanding the connections between culture, place, landscape, and terroir. He also has a minor wine collection in his basement cellar.

ICELAND: LAND OF FIRE AND ICE June 26-July 4, 2018 with Professor of Geology Jeff Noblett. When asked to serve as faculty study leader on this special Icelandic Block Break Away Professor Noblett shared his excitement, “Being able to stand where a mid-ocean ridge reaches the surface, and follow it inland, witness recent volcanic activity, and discover how this activity might reflect the way in which our earliest continents began to form makes Iceland a geological hotspot (pun intended!). I look forward to sharing with you some of what I have learned over the years from how knowing the atomic structure of silicate minerals allows us to predict the nature of volcanic eruptions and hazards, to the plate tectonic theory that describes how rifts and hot spots form and move, to the actual volcanic, glacial, and geothermal geology of Iceland that we will see on this excursion.” Active volcanoes provide natural spas throughout Iceland; glaciers and mountains dot the country, providing many rivers flowing to the ocean; and the Gulf Stream warms the island. Discover this warmth for yourself in Iceland’s famous natural spas; on the trails of its mountains, waterfalls, and volcanoes; and in the culture of its people.

GREAT TRAINS AND GRAND CANYONS October 21-26, 2018 with Professor of Economics and Business Mark Smith. “The Grand Canyon is the one great sight which every American should see.” In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt said these words when he first laid eyes on one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights. Every traveler should explore our own beautiful American West, and that is exactly what you will do on this exciting journey through Arizona. This travel experience features a combination of American West highlights with the scenery of Grand Canyon National Park and the red rocks of Sedona, the Native American history at the Montezuma Castle National Monument, the Old West nostalgia of two train rides, and five nights at a resort property in Sedona, Arizona.

Just north of Phoenix, Sedona is known for its upscale resorts, artist galleries, and breathtaking red rock scenery, and is the perfect “home base” for this six-day adventure.

Professor Smith is an expert in western water resources. His courses in natural resource and environmental economics have explored issues ranging from Glen Canyon Dam to Native American water rights to mining to conservation of national parks. His grandfather was a steam engineer for the Santa Fe railroad. This will be his first time to Sedona without a van full of students.

“BEYOND THE SEA:” MUSICAL EXPLORATIONS OF THE WINDWARD ISLANDS March 19-26, 2019 with Assistant Professor of Music Ryan Bañagale ’00. “Sailing takes me away,” sang Christopher Cross once upon a time. Now it is your turn to experience the sounds of the sea. Join us on the beautiful Le Ponant as we visit Barbados, Tobago Cays, Grenada, Union Island, St. Vincent, Martinique, and St. Lucia, all the while exploring the importance of music in our lives. As an internationally recognized musicologist with a passion for public engagement, Bañagale demystifies the powerful nature of music. As a group of voyagers, we will examine our emotional connection and why certain music resonates within us so profoundly, including the genres that appeal most to those on board the ship as well as those of the inhabitants on our itinerary islands. We’ll ponder what music we would want with us if castaway on a deserted island, but with all of the comforts and none of the grief. And, just for the fun of it, we’ll look at the role of sailing to a host of musicians over time, from Richard Wagner’s Flying Dutchman to Billie Holiday’s “Sailboat in the Moonlight,” from the Beach Boys’ “Sloop John B,” to “I am on a Boat” by Lonely Island — and many more. Come sail away, come sail away with CC.

HIKING SCOTLAND’S INNER AND OUTER HEBRIDES June 15-25, 2019 with Professor of Geology Eric Leonard. This trip takes us along Scotland’s west coast, a unique seascape, wild and exposed, dominated by the archipelago of islands that make up the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Sculpted by the sea from geology both ancient and young, these islands have long and varied coastlines, with high cliffs, spectacular sea lochs or fjords, sandy or rocky bays, caves and arches — always something new to draw you around the next corner, and always the sound and smell of the ocean at the very edge of Europe. The itinerary takes us from south to north along the western edge of highland Scotland across incomparably beautiful — and fascinating — islands. Edges are immensely important in geology because it is there that continents have repeatedly met and parted, on each occasion leaving the trace of their tectonic dance written clearly in the landscape.

Professor Leonard‘s specialties are glacial geology, paleoclimate, and geomorphology (the study of landforms and earth-surface processes). His own research work has focused on the U.S. and Canadian Rocky Mountains, the Washington Cascades, and the Andes and coastal areas of Chile. He has also done geological fieldwork and led geology field courses in Scotland, Argentina, Costa Rica, New Zealand, western Canada, and throughout the American West. In addition to his geological expertise, Leonard has strong interests in history, skiing, photography, and all kinds of exotic foods.

POLAR BEARS AND BELUGA WHALES July 28-August 3, 2019 with Miro Kummel, associate professor and director of Environmental Programs. Head north and discover the beauty and wildness of Churchill, Manitoba. Known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” this small town on the banks of the Hudson Bay is famous for these majestic animals, who spend summer and fall on the local shores before returning to the pack ice when it forms in early winter. In summer they share the area with more than 60,000 beluga whales and a wide variety of other wildlife. Come and see this annual exhibition that can only be found here in the Canadian north, and meet the local people who call it home.

Miroslav “Miro” Kummel is a population ecologist whose research connects the boundaries of mathematics, biology, and climatology. His research focuses on two distinct areas of spatial ecology — population dynamics in complex networks and the role of climate change in species migrations.
