H2020 - the Twinning call
• Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation
Type of action: Coordination and Support Actions
• H2020-TWINN-2015 for “widening countries”. Aims:
… significantly strengthen a defined field of research
in a particular knowledge institution … by
creating a link between this institution and at least
two internationally-leading research institutions
• Enhance the S&T capacity of the linked institutions; • Raise research profile of staff and whole institution
Savršeno za ZTF…

Hrvatskoj. 550 znanstvenika, 14 zavoda, 80 laboratorija
DTP - Division of Theoretical Physics (Zavod za Teorijsku Fiziku)
• 16 znanstvenika + 12 postdoktoranata/studenata.
dva nedavna FP7 FETOPEN projekta, jedan aktivan FETOPEN H2020, nekoliko HRZZ projekata, 3 ZCI.
1 • 5 istraživačkih smjerova na DTP:
1. Čestična fenomenologija 2. Astročestična - kozmologija 3. Matematička Fizika 4. Fizika Čvrstog Stanja 5. Statistička Fizika
DTP izazovi
• Promjena generacija, moramo biti privlačniji! • Svijet ide dalje, ne možemo ostati na mjestu!!! • Otvaranje novih područja? (Quantum
computing, biophysivcs) • Dosta suradnji – stare suradnje (PhD ili
postdoc veze) • Politika zapošljavanja (The only important scientific
strategy is employment strategy) • Evoulcija zavoda nakon smjene generacija.

DTP – Performance indicators
1. Number of papers and working papers produced in TPD during the project. Increase in this number will indicate strengthened research activity and improved scientific capacity.
2. Average impact of publications in this period. Increase of this indicator would indicate improvement in the quality of research in TPD.
3. Number of joint collaborations within TPD during the project. Increase of this indicator will show stepping up of research critical masses in TPD.
4. Number of joint collaborations between TPD and Twinning partners. Increase of this indicator will show strengthening of TPD collaborative potential in the most important research questions of modern theoretical physics.
5. Number of visits and seminars in TPD. Increase of this indicator will demonstrate exposure to new ideas and should correlate with indicators 1 and 2.
6. Number of international conferences attended. Increase of this indicator will show increased visibility of the research done in TPD.
7. Number of events offered to the local community, as a measure of the role of TPD and RBI in the Croatian science and general public, which should correlate with an increase attractivity of RBI as the elective choice for the best students.

13
Feedback on Twinning
• Impact on regional environment -
we would like to support/invite external students.
• Excellence follows also from competitive (salary) offers.
But CSA do not contribute to it (e.g. no postdocs).
• Limited involvement of external institutions
(hard to invite other conference speakers)
• Most of the actions targeted to main node…
Most budget and man-months in RBI…
For a theory project - this puts a lot of effort on staff…

Fizika Čvrstog Stanja
Topics:
Ab initio calculations in materials science.
Search for novel materials, in particular van
der Waals heterostructures
(layered structures of different vdW materials – such as
Graphene, Molybdenum disulfide)
Expertise (SISSA): Development of ab
initio (density functional theory)
codes and functionals, in particular
the functionals for the vdW interaction.
see lecture by Stefano De Gironcoli (SISSA) 18
Complex systems and Statistical Physics
Example activity:
Applications of stochastic networks to cyber security,
Evolutionary game theory,
Metal-insulator transition, Quantum computing
Goal: To learn about bio-networks and formulate 2-3 good
research questions to help transition to this direction of
research. (NBI)
19
Čestična fizika
Standard Model:
• Precision calculations! • Quantum chromodynamics
• Flavour Physics
• Higgs physics (LPT, LMU)
Beyond the Standard Model
• More fundamental theory? • New signals from LHC?
• Neutrinos need a theory
• Dark matter needs a theory
(SISSA, LPT)
see lecture by Sébastien Descotes Genon(LPT) 20
Astročestice: misterije kozmosa
• Dark Matter: Galaxies and theory of Gravitation tell us that there exist a mysterious kind of invisible matter…
…with puzzles challenging theorists
• Or maybe we must modify the theory of gravitation?
• Also the observation of the deep
cosmos challenges us.
…structure formation Andromeda
(SISSA) (LPT)
see lecture by Paolo Salucci (SISSA) 21

Matematička Fizika
• Example: an open problem is How to unify Einstein's
theory of General Relativity with Quantum Physics? • Hypothesis: Is classical space-time insufficient?
…study generalized or non-commutative geometry.
…no more point particles but extended objects like strings and branes.
• Approach – Generalize the
concept of symmetries in
new geometrical picture:
dualities, non-commutative
gauge theories, holography,
higher algebra structure. Mathematical physics (M.C. Escher)
