These meals will take place at 6:00 pm, with singing and devotions to follow. Cost of the meal is $6. We plan to have a five week study of John Ort-berg’s The Me I Want to Be beginning Wednes-day, January 18, if there is sufficient interest. Please express your interest by calling Al Carlson at 843-7071, or sign up on the sheet posted in the church office.

January 2012 XYZ MEETING

The XYZ (Xtra Years of Zest) Group will meet at noon on Thursday, January 5 in Fellowship Hall. The meeting will begin with a potluck lunch, so please bring a dish to pass and your own table ser-vice. Following lunch, Cris Wegener and the Lud-ington Center for the Arts volunteer coordinator will present a program on the activities taking place in our former church building on Harrison Street. Please join us for a time of good food, fellowship and what I’m sure will be an interesting program regarding the uses for our former church.

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tourna-ment victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “But why?” they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said, “I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.” This timely pun submitted by Lyman Lauver.

To Friends and Family at the United Methodist Church of Ludington, Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your prayers, calls, cards and visits

during my time of healing. I further appreciate your expressions of concern as expressed to Eldonna dur-ing my absence from church and normal daily activi-ties. I have been blessed! No longer do I wear the medical vacuum that accompanied me twenty-four hours a day nor am I under the care of Home Health Care anymore. In September I was told that I would be facing twelve months of healing. Nevertheless, I am now allowed to participate in activities of my choice. So I continue to pray for complete healing in God’s time and patience so that I may endure the wait. Please continue to pray that the healing power of Jesus Christ will continue to touch me. With thanksgiving and in Christ’s Love, Ken Tabor

I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of our congregation who have served so willingly as Ludington United Methodist Church leaders during the time I have served as Administrative Board Chair-man. Thank you for your cooperation and your par-ticipation! Gregg Heimall I would like to thank all of you who rang bells for the Salvation Army at Walmart this Christmas season: 72 of our church people, age 6 to almost 90, rang a total of 174 hours. Your time and efforts were greatly ap-preciated. Bev Hamman, Coordinator

On November 10, 2011 seven men and women went on a 12 day mission trip to Haiti. Members of the team include: Becky Sopha, Rommie Mac-Donald, Dave Hamman-team leader, from UMC of Ludington; Delberta Troutman, Hartford UMC; Dawn Brown, Traverse Bay UMC; and Steve and Chris Wettle, Marshall UMC. We left Detroit Thursday morning and arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti later that day and spent the night at the Meth-odist guesthouse. The next day we went to the town of Petit Goave about two hours west of Port-au-Prince, near the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake. We stayed at a Methodist guesthouse. In Petit Goave we distrib-uted 10 Sawyer water filters to the Brakeman Meth-odist School, and 31 water filter systems to pre-chosen women at the Olivier Medical Clinic outside of Petit Goave. The following day we gave 10 more to selected families of the Central Methodist Church of Petit Goave.

Above: Part of the mission team with Haitians who received some water filter systems. Right column: Becky with infant at La Pistere clinic

At each place of distribution we assembled the sys-tems and gave instructions as to how to use and maintain them. We also left $100 for a nurse to do a follow up with the recipients. Another 20 systems were left to be distributed by the District Superin-tendent in Miragoane and 10 for the Leone area near the town of Jeremie. We attended a church service in Petit Goave on Friday night and another one on Sunday which was a special harvest service. Becky played a few songs on the keyboard at the Sunday service and the congregation sang along. We

returned to Port-au-Prince later that afternoon. On Monday, November 14, we flew north on a small 30 passenger plane over the beautiful mountains of Haiti to the city of Cap Haitien. The Methodist Guesthouse we stayed at for five nights overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. While in the Cap Haitien area, we distributed 20 more water filter systems to schools, clinics and families. We visited Baudin Elementary School, which our church sponsors, and distributed one pair of shoes to each teacher. Last June the teachers had requested black shoes so we brought them from home. We also gave each of them $20 for transportation back and forth to school. Next door to the school is Baudin Agricultural School where we cleaned walls, ceiling, and floor and then painted the walls. While Becky was sweeping and painting she was humming and singing. Then young Haitian men from the Baudin Methodist Church came in and started singing and working right along with her. Just outside Cap Haitien we visited the small village of Pistere at the foot of a mountain. Here we visited a spe-cial medical clinic operated by a United Methodist woman from Michigan. While there we met four Meth-odist Haitian men who have started an orphanage next to the clinic. They also started a very poor government school and we vis-ited both places. The next day in that same area, we visited an amazing program empower-ing women in busi-ness. The program makes micro loans to women to each start a business. For example, each woman signs for 10 chickens for ap-proximately 80 cents each. Then they go out and sell them for $2 a chicken. continued on next page

MISSION TEAM TO HAITI - NOVEMBER 2011

With the profit, they pay back their loans and then have money left over to purchase 15 more and sell them for a total profit. Most of the women are sell-ing up to 200 chickens per month. Other animals and fruit they sell are goats, guinea fowl, plantains, bananas, other fruit, and chocolate. The following day we packed up food and drink for the day and 11 of us took a challenging four hour ride in and on a pickup truck following the Grande Riviere du Nord north all the way up to the moun-tain top village of Ranquitte. We crossed four streams along the way and at one point had to stop and repair a muffler. We stopped at a medical clinic at Latannerie and left $510 to hire a nurse to reopen the clinic. In Ranquitte, we visited the construction site of the new church our Methodist Church of Ludington is helping fund. The walls are two-thirds complete.

UMC of Ludington is one of the funders of this Methodist church being built in the mountainous town of Ranquitte. On Saturday, November 19, we flew back over the rugged mountains of Haiti to Port-au-Prince (PAP). We gave away a few more water filters to people in PAP. On Sunday, the 20th, we attended Frere Cam-pus Methodist Church along with orphan friends, then went to lunch with some of our Haitian friends at a nice American style restaurant. We also visited King's Orphanage, school and hospital where we visited with old and new friends alike. On Monday, November 21, most of the group re-turned to the U.S., arriving in Detroit late that night. Rommie & Dave stayed in PAP an extra day to meet with the President of the Eglise Methodiste de Haiti.

Dave also visited the home of the orphan girl he and Bev are sponsoring. The major accomplishment on this mission trip was the distribution of 102 life-saving water filter sys-tems. Overall, we were happy to see much more of the debris from the earthquake has been removed since last June and more construction has been tak-ing place throughout Port-au-Prince. Dave Hamman Mission Team Leader The office receptionists and newsletter folders attended an appreciation party December 15. These are the folks who answer the office phone and greet visitors; fold and stuff the weekly bulletins; fold, label and tape the monthly newsletters; and do many other behind-the-scenes duties to keep the gears of the church running smoothly.
