In 1933 the boys basketball team won the Blackhawk league with an 8-1 record under head coach Nat Baird. Harold Birney was a player. The HS voted to bring back “The Torch”, which was a 3- page school annual. The high school girls were participating in a horseshoe tournament and “A Quiet Evening at Home” was the HS play. It cost 10ç for students to attend and 20ç for adults. St. Joseph’s basketball team were considered “dangerous contenders” when they entered the District tournament. The football team would have 40 out for the team and would play Dubuque in the first game and end the season by playing Muscatine. Men’s dress pants sold for 95ç and a Chevy Coup cost $445. DeWitt community held its first Street Dance.

When I think of families that are representative of our school and community, one of those names that come to mind is the Scheckel family. One of the outstanding 5 siblings to graduate from Central DeWitt was 1997 graduate Ryan Scheckel. Ryan was an outstanding multisport athlete who played football (Letterman & Captain), Basketball (2X Letterman, Captain and 1996 State Tournament), Track & Field (4X Letterman, 2X Captain, 6X State Qualifier/4th Place State 1600-meter run), and Baseball. He later attended Mount Mercy University and played 3 sports. He was a member of Basketball (2 years), Cross-Country (2 years, 2X MCC 2nd Team All-Conference) and Track & Field (4-years, 2X Captain, 2X MVP, 7X MCC Champion, 2X NAIA National Qualifier and 2001 Most Valuable Performer at the MCC Track & Field Championship). He graduated in 2001 with a BA in Criminal Justice & Sociology and in 2016 earned his MA in Strategic Leadership. He was an outstanding coach for Mount Mercy from 2001-2016. During 16 years as the Head Cross Country Coach he coached 7 NAIA XC National Meet Team Qualifiers, 35 NAIA Cross Country National Meet Individual Qualifiers, 9 Conference Cross Country Team Championships, 12 Conference Cross Country Individual Champions and 9 times was named the Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year and in 2001 was named the NAIA Region VII Women's Cross-Country Coach of the Year. He was inducted in to the Mount Mercy Hall of Fame in 2017. As a Track & Field Assistant he was a part of 2 NAIA Track & Field National Champions, 20 NAIA Track & Field All-Americans, 78 NAIA Track & Field National Qualifiers, 5 Conference Track & Field Team Championships, 138 Conference Track & Field Champions and was named 6 times as the Conference Track & Field Coach of the Year. Since 2016 he has been a Business Development Manager for Infrastructure Technology Solutions, LLC in Monticello, Iowa. He has also served as the acting Meet Director for Mount Mercy University XC including the NAIA SC National Championships in 2018 & 2020. He is active in the West Linn Community Group, Corridor Running Club and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. He enjoys running, biking, hunting, fishing and still runs road races and triathlons. He serves as the Mayor of Palo, Iowa. He and his wife Jill have 3 boys: Myles (13), Ryker (10) and Cy (6).

2006 Inductee: Carolyn Eggleston (Sponsor) Carolyn Eggleston is the first sponsor to be inducted into the Central High School Hall of Fame. Carolyn began her teaching career in the Central Community School district in 1963. She served as the high school choral music director and is credited for many “firsts”. Carolyn initiated the Central Chamber Singers during her tenure as Choral Director. Carolyn also began the practice of having Central students sign the National Anthem at indoor athletic events. Central students entered into the All State Chorus competitions and Carolyn brought the first Broadway musical production to the Central High School stage. Carolyn continues to serve as a judge for the Iowa High School Music Association solo ensemble and large group competitions as well as the All State Chorus competitions.

Thank you to all our Administrators for helping me through the year. A big THANK YOU to all of our Boosters & all our Volunteers… and a huge THANK YOU to all of our Coaches, Sponsors and Student-Athletes for making this such a great year! Club Notes

Our Park & Rec put on a nice youth track meet this spring… the “Live Healthy Iowa Kids Meet”. We had over 80 youth participating. Thanks for Coach Olson & Lansing for organizing this meet for our youth and all the support from Kevin Lake. Runners… don’t forget our own Skeffington’s Race and the Bix this summer! Our youth soccer organization, EISA is well underway, contact Jim Lass if you are interested in being involved. Don’t forget there will be volleyball, football, wrestling, basketball, track and soccer camps this summer.

Congratulations to our Boys Golf Team (Rielly McGranahan, Tucker Kinney, Jacob Brainerd, Tanner Steffens, Drew Eden, and Dylan McAleer) & Coach Ellis for winning the 3A State Championship!! It was back-to-back titles and what an incredible year they had by winning about everything they competed it. Only one other program, our Boys Cross Country teams under the leadership of coach Jim Hetrick has won consecutive titles in 2000 & 2001. Our golf program has been to State 4 of the last 5 years and it is certainly our dominant sport right now. 11 months ago, our first grandchild entered our lives. Thanks to his parents Casey & Meghan, we have been blessed with the addition of Landen James Kreiter. Coach Machovec, Mrs. Wildes and others have warned me before his birth that it was going to have a big impact on me… and it has! I am not in the same position as Coach Mach or Mrs. Wildes and get to make weekly or daily visits but I think I would if I could. It is great being a grandfather! I have joked with others that I cannot believe how quickly I have grown attached to that little guy. Looking back to when we were raising our own children, it just seemed like a lot of WORK. I jokingly have professed that I don’t even know if I even really liked our own kids that much until they got to be about 3 years old! Babies are tough! Some people are definitely “baby people” and love that infant stage… I was not one of them! I can honestly say… and lucky for our kids… that Jenny did the majority of the child rearing when they were young. I was frequently found elsewhere having fun coaching football and wrestling or still finding the time in the off-season to fit in a game of Rugby! But although I don’t perceive fond memories of that age, something is different with this little bundle of joy and I have grown very attached to him even at this young stage. Talking with other grandparents, they just smile as they recognize that it is some universal phenomenon that I am now experiencing. Overall, minus my thoughts on the infant stage, I can say that raising our children was such an honor and a blessing. I reminisce fondly about so many of those memories and think of all the good times we had as a family. If I could, I would go back and do it all over again! I am not experiencing some sort of midlife crisis, I just really enjoyed all those good times in our lives. CREATING GREAT MEMORIES. It may not be “what it is all about” but you are really missing out on one of the best parts of life if you are trying to make some for yourself. And now I am thinking maybe I missed the boat a little bit when the kids were infants because I was looking at it as work. I could be just now realizing that I was too focused on the struggles involved with babies…the hours… the crying… the not knowing… the responsibility and forgot to enjoy the moment. All that “stuff” can and does wear on you but if I had shifted my focus I could have taken more time to enjoy the process. I didn’t take enough time to think about how special that time was and that I would not never get it back. I was anticipating moving beyond that stage and wanting to rush ahead. It probably wasn’t babies at all… it was my own attitude that prevented some additional memories that now I am enjoying with a different perspective with my grandson. As an Activities Director, I get to be at so many events where parents are experiencing those same fun times with their own children. I certainly recognize what a special time that was in my life and know it is the same for them. It makes me smile a little more just thinking of how important these times are in their lives. I worry a little bit though, when I observe what appears to be adults that are not enjoying the opportunities but instead are hyper-focused on the work, the time, the ups, the downs, the drama, the struggles. Some of that is necessary but when it happens for the sake sacrificing the fun experiences and great memories is a real misfortune. Enjoy these times because they are not going to last! I think it is easier for grandparents to enjoy those moments, probably because we don’t dive so deeply into the activities and try and just enjoy the brief moments we have with them. Maybe it’s similar to that well-known phenomenon that I am just experiencing with Landen. The joy of just sitting back and enjoying the ride! Have a great summer!!
