Despite often being described with adjectives like harsh, barren and desolate the Sonoran Desert does support a variety of life.

The Desert Awareness Committee of the Foothills Community Foundation will celebrate that fact with a class on desert edibles at 8 a.m., Aug. 18 at Desert Awareness Park.

“We’re hoping for at least 50 people, but I could see up to 100 showing for an event like this,” Diane Vaszily of the Desert Awareness Committee said. “We will be there to answer questions, to hand out recipes and to dish out some treats.”

The harvest involves techniques for gathering and preparing

mesquite beans, prickly pear fruits, jojoba nuts and Mormon

tea. Participants will get to taste mesquite cookies, jojoba nuts and prickly pear juice\ along with lemonade.

“We want people to know how to tell when they’re ready to be harvested,” Vaszily said. “The prickly pear, for instance, are just about ready. We’ll teach people how to clean them, how to get the stickers of them and then we’ll make smoothies. I’d say maybe they taste a little bit like raspberry, only a bit sweeter. Quite a few restaurants feature prickly pear lemonades or ice teas.

Then you have the Mesquite beans. A lot of them are falling off the trees because of the recent winds and rains, but we’ll teach people how to grind them and turn them into a meal. Jojoba nuts are more famous for being an oil than a nut. For the

Mormon tea, you use the whole green leaf. It looks like a needle or a stem.”

A $3 donation is asked to attend the two hour event. For information call 480-488-1090. The Desert Heritage Center is located across the wash from the parking lot on the corner of Cave Creek and Vermeersch Road in Cave Creek.

STAFF REPORT

Arizona Department of Public Safety personnel served three different search warrants on Thursday morning including one in New River. The efforts led to the arrest of three alleged gang members.

The suspects allegedly burned a car for insurance money. DPS also said they may be involved with a man’s murder after booking them on multiple charges.

Search warrants were served at 7 a.m. at three locations, including the northeast Phoenix residence of the gang’s purported leader, 33-year-old Lakeisha Deniece Youmans (aka “Baby Girl”).

All three properties, the Northeast Phoenix location, the New River residence as well as a residence in Surprise were covered in gang paraphernalia.

Youmans ordered fellow gang members to strip her car, which

was then burned. One of the members involved with burning the car told a relative about the incident. DPS officials believe that admission led to him being run off the road and killed by fellow gang members.

Youmans was booked on fraudulent schemes, a felony, according to Carrick Cook of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The “sargeant at arms,” 30-year-old Gerolamo Dicarlo (aka “Gino” or “Stogy”), was to be booked on felonies that include fraudulent schemes and possession of drugs, Cook said, while Michael Darrah, 43, also known as “Big Mike”, was to be booked for possession of stolen property.

The suspects could still be charged in connection with the murder, Cook said.

STAFF REPORT

Jim Van Allen stepped down from the Carefree town council on July 31.

Van Allen, who was elected as a write-in candidate in May 2011cited non-life threatening health issues as part of his reasoning for resigning.

Van Allen indicated that he would keep his other reasons for resignation private for now.

At his final town council meeting, on July 10, Van Allen questioned the transparency in the budget for the Christmas Festival, asking why there was an $8,000 increase budgeted from last year’s total of $68,000 to this year’s $76,000.

While Van Allen said he wouldn’t hold up the budget for its lack of transparency on the item he said he was disappointed. “I feel bad for our citizens that we can’t get an explanation on that,” he said. That comment drew the ire of both councilman Glenn Miller and mayor David Schwan. “As usual you want to micro manage and you’re wrong,” said Miller, who explained that the budget for the event was based on anticipated donations.

Schwan also rebuked Van Allen’s statement. “I too take exception to the comment on lack of transparency,” the mayor said. “It’s disingenuous at best.”

Tai Chi/Body Balance, is among the fall lineup of classes being offered on the Black Mountain campus of Paradise Valley Community College. Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes are scheduled to meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church in north Scottsdale, starting Sept. 4.

Instructor Ray Sol is eager to introduce the ancient Chinese practice of Tai Chi and its many benefits to new students, and pleased so many former students are returning. In reflecting on the PVCC classes he’s taught since 2010, Sol said, “I’ve seen marked improvement in the flexibility, strength, and balance of many students. This

year, one of them won a Gold Medal in Tai Chi at the Arizona Senior Olympics. It shows how skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom can be used for success in the real world.”

Certainly, nothing says success in a teacher’s world more than the difference their instruction makes in the lives of their students. Chris Hutchins is among nine returning students who began learning the Guang Ping Yang style of Tai Chi from Sol two years ago.

“My kids suggested I try Tai Chi, because I couldn’t touch my toes, had difficulty turning my head from side to side, and couldn’t concentrate long enough to feel refreshed after exercising,” he said. “Now, I can do all those things,

and my family says I’ve changed. I not only feel better, I’m a better person.”

Both Sol and Hutchins acknowledge some beginners experience frustration or fear they won’t master all the moves. Sol says a good teacher is always teaching individuals, even when engaged in group instruction. “If someone has physical limitations or difficulty doing any part of the form, I work with them to find their personal solution.” Hutchins says, “Ray is patient, kind, and fun. After three months, I was hooked. I’d encourage new students to stick it out, because it’s so worth it.

To register, visit: PVCC at Black Mountain, 34250 N. 60th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85266, 602-493-2600.

later that I noticed that there was water seeping through the brick wall, through my back fence.”

Going out into his backyard he stood on a chair to look over the fence.

“It looked like a lake,” he said. “I knew the wall wasn’t going to be able to hold that amount of water. The water was probably 14 maybe 18 feet deep.”

After alerting his family, Rene went next door to warn his neighbor Jeannette Feeley of the situation.

“I told her she needed to get out of her house,” he said.

Feeley instead went out to her backyard to see what was going on.

Minutes later the two were talking back and forth from over their adjoining wall when the back wall gave out. The rush of water entering Feeley’s yard knocked over the adjoining wall to Rene’s house and sent Feeley flying.

After disappearing under the water Rene said he wasn’t sure if he’d see her alive again.

Fortunately Feeley was able to grab a hold of the spa in

her backyard which the water moved from the center of the yard to the corner by the opposite neighbor’s wall.

From the spa she crawled onto the fence and was able to safely escape the rushing water.

While Feeley was able to save herself, her home had police tape around it Thursday. She lost almost everything.

Rene was in slightly better shape, as his family was able to salvage some personal belongings, although neither family had flood insurance.

“I was a zombie yesterday,”

Rene said. “I just couldn’t believe what happened. I don’t know what we’re going to do. Just take it one thing at a time I guess.”

As he showed video from his phone of water swiftly running through his house Rene was paid a visit by a friend offering a hug and a bag of clothes.

While Feeley was staying with friends in town, the Salvation Army was able to come up with funds to put the Vides family in a hotel for a couple days.

Where the Vides, with an

incoming freshman and a junior at Boulder Creek High School, were headed while their home is prepared was a deep concern for Rene. By lunch that mystery was solved from an unlikely source.

Toby Kommer, who lives in Fargo, North Dakota has been coming to the Valley on business for more than 10 years. He said he’d always liked the Valley and had wanted to invest in a property for some time. Initially looking in Scottsdale, he was persuaded by a real estate agent to give Anthem a look.

The Parkside resident purchased a vacation home in Anthem last November. After getting a phone call about the storm from his realtor he called a handy man, who periodically checks on his home. Hearing that his house was fine, but that some in Anthem hadn’t been nearly as fortunate, Kommer said he immediately decided he wanted to help, offering up his home as a place to stay for free.

“Even though we aren’t there very often our experience in Anthem has been so positive. Everybody is so nice and

helpful,” he said. “It reminds me of the Midwest in that people kind of look out for each other. We have three kids so I can only imagine what it’s like trying to deal with what they’re going through and then having to try and get their kids ready to go back to school. Hopefully by giving them a place to stay it will help them in getting back on their feet. We’re happy to help out.”

Outside the damaged homes Thursday the Christian Emergency Network was on hand to start the cleanup efforts. The Daisy Mountain

Fire Department also turned out to lend a hand with the cleanup while neighbors came by to drop off a wide range of donations.

Mike Marshall of the Christian Emergency Network said the family can use all sorts of things from school clothes and supplies for the kids to dry wallers, framers among others.

“This is going to require a lot of restoration services,” he said. “We’re looking at an overhaul being needed.”

Rene said he doesn’t know what he would have done if not for the community’s backing, mentioning his son’s club baseball team as a strong support system.

Accounts have been set up for both Jeannette Feeley and the Vides family. To offer financial support to Feeley those interested can contribute at US Bank, account #151704268342. To support the Vides family, go to Wells Fargo Bank, account #6939014855. For information on helping in some other fashion email [email protected].

Fellowship Center seeks aid in storm aftermath

In the aftermath of the recent “Storm of the Century” in Anthem, many families in the small community find themselves digging out from under fallen trees, reinforcing retaining walls and making insurance claims.

The Fellowship Center is no different. This community building serves the North Valley in many ways. The building houses a private school and a local church. Artists display their work in the art gallery and many of the North Valley’s groups use the Performing Arts Center for concerts, plays, musicals, and community-wide events.

The water damage from the wind and rain is extensive, leaving the building out of commission for up to three weeks for repairs and reconstruction. Even if insurance covers the damages, Fellowship Church, the building owner, will be out several thousand dollars in deductibles. Additionally, school is set to begin classes next Wednesday, but may be displaced or delayed as a result of the damages.

“The Caepe School has been committed to making a positive impact in the North Valley since its inception several years ago,” Tamara Lee, Head of Caepe School said. “We choose community service projects each year and have plans to plant a community garden this fall. But first, we need help getting the building back in order so we can start classes.”

“One of our primary goals at Fellowship is to serve our community in as many ways as possible through volunteering and giving of our time and resources. It is difficult for us to find ourselves the ones in need this time around. But even in this challenging time, we are encouraged by the sense of community and support,” Ted Baird, pastor of Fellowship Church said.

Doug Clark, Anthem

U n d e r t h e S u p r e m e C o u r t ’ s M i r a n d a dec i s ion, the police a r e r e q u i r e d to inform

an arrested suspect that he can consult with an attorney before and during interrogation and that the suspect need not answer questions.

This rule raised a hypothetical: If the late Marcel Marceau, the world’s best known mime, had been stopped for speeding, would the arresting officer have had to tell him, “You have the right to remain silent”?

There is no Miranda Rule in American presidential politics, where we voters expect, even demand, that presidential candidates tell us about themselves — who they are, what makes them tick and what makes them both like us and yet different from us. Please know if you might someday want to run for the White House and are inhibited by either an acute sense of privacy or terminal humility from answering such questions, your political rivals will — unflatteringly — fill in all the blank spots for you.

Think about it: What did we know about Republican candidate Ronald Reagan long before he was elected in 1980? That he had been a radio sports announcer in Des Moines who went to Hollywood, where in “Knute Rockne, All American” he played George Gipp, the dying Notre Dame star halfback (earning himself a lifelong nickname), became president of the screen actors union, left the Democratic Party after four times voting for FDR and won two terms as Republican governor of California, then the world’s sixth-largest economy. We knew that the Gipper, who had an easy sense of humor, if

elected would be the country’s first divorced president.

George H.W. Bush? Born into a wealthy New England family with a commitment to public service. His father was a Republican senator from Connecticut. On the day in 1942 when he graduated from prestigious Andover, where he was captain of the baseball team, George celebrated his 18th birthday and enlisted in the Navy.

In less than a year, as that service’s youngest pilot, he would be flying torpedo bombers and be shot down by Japanese guns. He married at 21, moved to Texas, founded an oil company, lost two U.S. Senate races and got elected to the U.S. House, where he voted for the 1968 Civil Rights Act.

What do we know about Mitt Romney? Not that much. His dad, a committed Mormon, was the successful president of American Motors before winning three terms as the civil rights-championing Republican governor of Michigan. We know that Mitt went to a select private boys’ school, served a 30-month Mormon mission in France, graduated from Brigham Young University, married Ann, his high-school sweetheart, and earned degrees from Harvard Law and Harvard Business School. We know that he founded Bain Capital, became a multimillioniaire, successfully headed the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, won one term as governor of Massachusetts and has been running for president since at least 2005.

But Romney must have an outsized zone of privacy. As a Republican who served successfully as governor in one of America’s bluest states, he would have been, on paper, a formidable general election nominee. But he spent the last two presidential campaigns running to the right of John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Rick

Perry and Newt Gingrich, while wooing the most conservative of GOP primary voters, especially on the issue of immigration. Romney is not comfortable speaking publicly about his religion or how his faith informs his politics.

The Obama campaign has spent time and money defining Romney’s private equity career as regularly putting profits before people and private international paydays ahead of American domestic prosperity. From Romney, there have been no public sightings of humor, candor or empathy. The Romney campaign insists that there will be time to introduce the Real Mitt to American voters at the Tampa, Fla., convention. But the longer he remains silent about who he is and what his personal hopes and, yes, doubts might be, Mitt Romney all but guarantees that essentially hostile brushes will paint his public portrait.
