Joseph (Joey) Gorman was born June 28, 1990 in Phoenix, Arizona Joey passed away July 2, 2014 in Rocky Point, Mexico. He was 24. He leaves behind his parents Elizabeth and Bill Thompson and John and Stephanie Gorman, his sister Taylor, two step-sisters Sarah and Jaimie, and three step-brothers Brandon, Steven,

and Aaron, in addition to a large extended family, neighbors, and friends. Joey lived in Glendale, Ariz. until 2001, when he moved to New River, Ariz. Growing up in New River, Joey’s outgoing personality made him lots of friends. Many of his friends’ parents became good friends to his parents. There were many good times. Joey enjoyed the freedom of riding his quad in the desert, and he loved sports and played baseball and football. He attended Boulder Creek High School through his Junior year and then moved to Yuma, Ariz., where he graduated at Yuma High School. He moved back to New River right before his 18th birthday and attended Glendale Community College until he decided to pursue construction. In January 2014, he moved to Rocky Point, Mexico to help his parents with their new business. He was a natural at bartending and felt he found his niche. He loved it in Rocky Point, made many more friends and that is where his funeral service was held. We will miss Joey’s charm, friendliness, and warm smile but find comfort in knowing he is at peace and his lovable heart has just grown bigger as he has taken a piece of everyone’s he has known.

PHOENIX – The Ari-zona Department of Transpor-tation is warning Labor Day travelers to expect slowing on the Interstate 15 this holiday weekend. An existing work zone through the Virgin River Gorge, combined with increased traffic due to the holiday, is ex-pected to slow traffic as much as two hours/ ADOT is currently working on a major recon-struction project on Virgin River Bridge No. 6 (milepost 16), located about 20 miles south of St. George, Utah. While no active construction will be taking place during the holiday weekend, the highway is currently narrowed to one lane in each direction through the work zone until the project is completed in 2016. ADOT has complet-ed upgrading the southbound bridge surfaces, girder repairs and other related work on Virgin River Bridge No. 2 (milepost 13), Bridge No. 3 (milepost 13) and Bridge No. 7 (milepost 22), so travelers will get some traffic relief in those areas. With limited alternate routes due to the remote loca-tion of the I-15 Virgin River Gorge corridor, ADOT urges drivers traveling between Mesquite, Nevada, and St. George, Utah, to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, slow down and drive carefully through the Virgin River Bridge No. 6 work zone. To stay up to date with the latest highway condi-tions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at az511.gov or call 511; outside of Arizona dial 1.888.411.ROAD (7623).

Heeee’s Baaack!!! Manuel, the friendly tarantula, has once again, arrived at my friend, Diane’s house in New River. Yes, one hairy little fel-low came “home” again for his annual visit. Well, let me tell the story from the very be-ginning.

How tolerant are you of houseguests? Imagine if they come unannounced (at around the same time each year), want the run of the house, and have eight legs. You might recall that my friend Diane has had a tarantula, fondly named Manuel, who has been visiting her home since 1990! It all started one July day, over twenty-four years ago, when Diane noticed something with a big belly and hairy legs walk-ing into her house through an open door (no, it wasn’t her neighbor). Yikes, a spider of the biggest, furriest kind was strutting around her kitchen!

From that moment on, a tradition (or migration pat-tern) was started. Each year, the tarantula arrives sometime in late July, hanging around until the end of September or early October. He leaves the same way he arrives – quietly and without any fanfare. He makes the perfect houseguest, since he finds his own food, doesn’t demand too much at-tention, and pretty much goes about his routine, not get-ting in anyone’s way. Manuel walks around the house, on the counters, on the ceilings, into the shower – he goes ev-erywhere!

Consider the kind heart and calm disposition that it takes to open your home to a big, fat spider! Not a pet, nor a companion, just a little creature of God that strolled innocently in through an open door. After checking out the premises and the occupant, this tarantula liked what he found. He’s been coming back annually, with pretty much the same behaviors and habits. Like an old friend, he just likes to “hang out.”

Diane keeps her eyes open this time of year for her hairy friend, never sure when and where he’ll turn up. A few years ago, Diane got a heart-pounding surprise when one morning she grabbed her sack of Velcro curlers, reached into the bag and found Manuel sit-ting in the midst of pink roll-ers! That must have been one hair-raising scream, because even the dogs came running to see what the ruckus was all about. (That summer Diane wore her hair straight). Yes, Manuel makes quite an en-trance when he comes back!

A few weeks ago, Diane was sitting on her patio one evening, and watched a furry friend saunter up her drive-way, walk onto the porch and through an open door into her kitchen. He paused, looked around, allowed the dogs to sniff him, and then happily disappeared down the hall-way, glad to be home.

Did you know that female tarantulas can live up to twen-ty-five years? The males?

Not so lucky. Usually the males have a life span of ten to twelve years. It seems after the male mates, it weakens him and his life is soon over. (Sadly my husband agrees). Could Manuel really be a girl? Or is this an offspring of Manuel? I guess we’ll never know, but he seems to have found “true love” when it comes to Diane. What else could explain his unusual behavior?

The arachnid specialist at the Phoenix Zoo speculates that this tarantula has an

established migration path each year to include Diane’s home. And it is likely this mi-gration pattern could have been “imprinted” in the off-spring. What does Manuel do at Diane’s house? Well, he just strolls around; sometimes he can be seen on a wall, or sit-ting on the back of her sofa, watching television, or snooz-ing in the corner of her bed-room. He just seems to “fit in” and mostly keeps to himself.

I had my own spider en-counter. I walked into a stall in my barn, doing the morn-ing chores, and found a large tarantula on the ground. Fear-ing that one of my horses might step on him, I grabbed a large shovel and very carefully scooped him up and headed out of the barn. He glared at me with his beady eyes, and I was scared he might jump up at me. As if perched on an amusement ride, my spi-der sat on the shovel while I ran around trying to figure out where to put him. The arena? No, a raven might pick him up. I headed over to the pasture, thinking maybe he’d like grass. No, a snake could be there. Suddenly, I realized I had no idea where he might want to go, much less where he ought to be! I ran back into the barn and set him down in the exact spot where I found him. He quickly walked up the stall door, probably dizzy from our encounter.

Well, Manuel is back, and that is all that matters! Dear Readers, we can all rest easy, because while there are plenty of problems in the world, the earth seems to be spinning on its proper axis and the stars are lined up just right. Life is good, because one big, happy spider seems to have found his way back “home.” If you see one of our desert wonders, the tarantula, please look kindly and do not be afraid. They make perfect houseguests.

J & B Furniture Consignments. Owner Barb Willis bought J & B as an existing Anthem business. The store now offers mainly furniture and home décor items. “We’ve furnished a lot of homes here in Anthem,”

Willis said. The store also offers extras for people who “need that little extra home décor item.” Many of Willis’ customers are repeat cli-ents. Since the store is exclusively consignment, customers can buy some-thing and sell something they already own through J & B. To sell items through J & B, customers can email pictures to Willis. Sell-ers are frequently local, although Willis has had clients from as far as Colo-rado. J & B Furniture Con-signments is located at 42407 N. Vision Way in Anthem. CAVE CREEK – Author Nora Roberts wrote, “Life will be your treasure box, fi lled with the sparkle of laughter, the gleam of adventure, the shine of discovery, the fl ash of magic. And through all these jewels streams the steady glow of love.” This eloquently penned refl ection is the perfect introduction to Sandy Schen-kat, local jewelry designer. Sandy’s love of Swarovski crystals and Chakra/rainbow colors bring brilliance and balance to life’s energy.

Sandy, like many profes-sional women, did not start her creative journey in jew-elry design until mid-career. She spent 30 years working as a successful real estate broker in south Florida. Her respon-sibilities in management and sales of new homes in private country club communities bringing in over 250 million in sales taught her the

importance of keeping a positive outlook, balancing her priorities, and apprecia-tion for the beauty around her.

Ten years ago, Sandy de-cided to leave the pressures of high-end sales and concen-trate on a more creative path for her and others. Armed with a background in market-ing, an eye for design, and a love of art, Sandy decided to take up the challenge of de-signing her own jewelry and helping other designers mar-ket their art, as well.

In 2005, Sandy became affi liated with Luxe Jewels, a California based company. She was trained by their top designers in the creation of fi ne jewelry and soon became a company representative. Soon she was acknowledged nation-ally for teaching a 78-year-old student how to create a brace-let for her mother’s 100th birthday. When Luxe Jewels became Stella and Dot, Sandy decided to change her focus

focus and became globally active with a fair trade co-op in Kenya. She and other women bought thousands of dollars worth of Kazuri (small and beautiful in Swahili) beads for use in one-of-a-kind jewelry creations. Sandy then created Kenya Kasuals and sold the pieces at Christopher Gallery on Main Street in Scottsdale. The venture was wildly suc-cessful in the knowledge that this was a woman-to-woman enterprise. The purchase of these unique and beauti-ful pieces helped support the woman of Kenya in support-ing their families.

The recession took its toll on the imports and Christo-pher Gallery. When the gal-lery closed, Sandy moved her focus to creating Heart and Soul Gems using Swarovski Crystals in her new design line. In 2009, Sandy was ac-cepted into Xanadu Gallery on Main Street and is current-ly their only jewelry artist. She became involved with Storm Wisdom (store/gallery

for intentional living) with her jewelry sales in 2010.

Sandy continues to take classes and create her unique jewelry pieces, inspired by the spiritual connections at Storm Wisdom in Phoenix. Her Chakra jewelry has

been a mainstay in combi-nation with her hearts, angels, and butterfl y pieces. Sandy’s creations are all made from sterling silver or gold fi lled in her commitment in producingARTScont. on pg. 11

handmade heirloom qual-ity designs. She believes that any classic outfit, formal to ca-sual, can be changed to set the mood with a stunning piece of exquisitely designed jewelry.

Sandy is still firmly ground-ed in her marketing roots. She has organized marketing workshops for artists of all backgrounds to help connect with customers. She joined Artisan Creative Exchange, an offshoot of Creative U in Cave Creek, shortly after Mar-lene Sabatina, Linda Hoff-man, DeLynn Hendrickson, and Elizabeth Sun formed the group.

In March 2014, Sandy was elected president of the group. The group’s mission is to encourage a community of supportive and knowledge-able jewelry artists, while expanding their growth, self-expression, and connections. Sandy is enjoying developing programs for the group, learn-ing new skills at the monthly meetings, and developing net-working opportunities for the custom creations.

NORTH VALLEY – Over the past five years, the Daisy Mountain Fire District has seen over a million dollar reduction in tax-generated revenue as property values declined. Fire Chief Mark Nichols, along with elected Fire Board Officials, made critical cuts to programs and budgets in an effort to sustain staffing and ser-vice delivery for district taxpayers. In addition to the drastic decline in tax revenue, the District also lost five employees due to retirement. In late 2013, Nich-ols under direction of the Daisy Mountain Fire Board applied for a Federal

S.A.F.E.R. Grant to replace five firefighter positions lost to attrition. In early 2014, the Daisy Mountain Fire District was awarded a grant to not only hire five new firefighters but also pay to train them and sustain their salaries for two years. On Aug. 8, five new firefighter recruits began their training at the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Academy. Once the Recruits success-fully complete a rigorous thirteen week training acad-emy, they will be assigned to one of Daisy Moun-tain’s four stations.

The GiverDir: Phillip Noyce

Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgârd, and Katie

HolmesMonte’s Rating2.00 out of 5.00

The beloved Lois Lowry novel “The Giver” was a self-interpretive ex-perience for readers. Dis-covery of individualized emotional conditions and thought provoking open-ended questions were two major components in bringing the reader into the dystopian world. Di-rector Phillip Noyce of-fered some interesting de-sign elements but adapted the source material with highlights and forced in-terpretations, unfortunate-ly giving the viewer noth-ing to truly contemplate. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) lives in a color-less world of contentment and conformity. When young adults in the com-munity reach a certain age they are given responsibili-ties within society. Jonas is given the special calling as the receiver of memory. The Giver (Jeff Bridges)

has been the sole keeper of memory as a source of guidance to the governing authority. Jonas’ power is knowledge and while at first his experience is eye opening with excitement and a happiness never felt, it soon turns to fear and anger over the secrets of the past and how they are hidden from the commu-nity. In order to save the people he cares for, Jonas must escape. “The Giver,” com-ing first in the recent hash of dystopian young adult novels, had a clear influ-ence on the “Divergent” and “The Hunger Games” series. It didn’t take long to see how familiar every-thing felt and looked on screen in this rendering. Much like the film adapta-tion of the formative sci-ence fiction The Givercont. on pg. 13

novel “John Carter,” “The Giver” suffered from being a late bloomer. Characters, settings, and narrative twists felt overly familiar. A complaisant dystopia society with varying de-grees of controlled class structure leads toward a rebellion. At the center of the story was a young sav-ior tasked with demand-ing expectations that ulti-mately displayed lessons of admirable character qualities. This simplistic description could describe all these films. However, while familiarity and a one-di-mensional approach to the challenging source material

ultimately hindered “The Giver,” Noyce displayed some great design qualities throughout. While Jonas was in the early stages of discovery, shown through a boring clutter of repre-sentative images, he began to experience strong emo-tions of love and happi-ness. After this gained feeling, Noyce changed the gray world palette with bursts of color to show Jo-nas’ enlightenment. Jeff Bridges did a decent enough job as The Giver, the best scenes in-volving Brenton Thwaites and Bridges discussing the ramifications of the past. The remaining cast, all fine

actors like Meryl Streep as a cold authoritarian or Ka-tie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgârd as an unfeeling “family unit,” had a few worthwhile scenes but were unfortunately shouldered with a script that didn’t offer much more for them. The interpretation of “The Giver” may mean something different today because of emotional matu-rity and experience, that’s the brilliance of great literature. This film adaptation was un-derwhelming and overly simplified, proposing a valuable message within a muddled and vague por-trayal.

The search for missing items is ongoing. Many residents also lost pets in the flash flood, and they are being sought, as well. Black Canyon City also suffered flood dam-age. Yavapai County has come out and cleared

the storm debris from lo-cal roadways, according to the BCC Chamber of Commerce. Local resi-dents are organizing fur-ther cleanup. To help with storm cleanup, search New Riv-er Flood Help on Face-book. Needed donations

include nonperishable food, toiletries, towels, sheets, blankets, bottled water, various tools, and pet items. Residents in need of help can also reach out to this group for support. The City of Phoe-nix, Maricopa County, and the State of Arizona are also offering assis-tance to those who have lost belongings in the re-cent monsoon storms. A Recovery Information Center has been set up at the fire station at 1708 W. Dobbins Road, in down-town Phoenix. For more information or assistance through this program, call (602) 534-2222.

CAVE CREEK – Bin-kley’s Restaurant is offering a spe-cial dining experience on Sept. 10, 5-9:30 p.m. Executive Chef Chris-topher Wolf of the Arizona Cu-linary Institute is joining forces with James Beard finalist Chef Kevin Binkley for a special six-course collaboration. Chef Wolf is no stranger to the Binkley’s kitchen, having spent many a busy season helping in the restaurant; he is quite fa-miliar with Chef Kevin’s detailed and innovative cooking style. “Our friendship blossomed out of a mutual professional respect. I think our paths were always des-tined to cross,” said Wolf, who has worked at some of the same five-star restaurants as Chef Bin-kley, just at different periods. The seafood-driven menu follows Chef Wolf’s culinary ca-reer, showcasing his favorite fla-vor profiles with a Binkley twist. To make reservations or see the menu, call (480) 437-1072 or visit www.binkleysrestaurant.com. Binkley’s Restaurant is located at 6920 E. Cave Creek Road, in Cave Creek.
