Michael Alexander Salon and Swankys team up for salon/boutiqueANTHEM – Feeling the

need for some pampering? Stop by Michael Alexander Salon & Spa’s new location, sharing a storefront with Swankys Boutique.

The salon is in the same parking lot on Anthem Way, across from the Outlets at Anthem, but it has moved to a different building in the plaza, now sharing space with Swankys. To celebrate the relocation and expansion, a grand opening party is set for the evening of Saturday, May 30.

Co-owner JJ Jones described specials planned for the grand opening night: package specials for different services, a raffle for gift baskets, and door prizes. The salon will have a wheel to spin with prizes on each wheel section; everyone who buys a service that night will get to spin the wheel for a free gift.

Multiple local businesses, including Maki Insurance Group, Gios Pizza, Planet Beach, and many more will

be on-site on the night of the grand opening, offering their own products and services, either at a discount or in a raffle. Keep up with all the details of the event by joining the event on Facebook – search Michael Alexander Salon’s New Location Celebration.

Michael Alexander is a full-service salon, offering a full range of services for hair, nail services, skin care, facials, microdermabrasion, spray tanning, lash extensions, and selected medical spa services.

“Since we moved, we added the spray tanning and the medical spa services,” Jones said, adding that the salon has an updated line of skin care products.

Other new products at the salon include a new color line called Innocence, for clients with allergies or sensitivities to normal hair dye, OLAPLEX Bond Multiplier, which is a conditioning product that helps heal hair breakage, and O& M (Original Minerals) products. The salon is the only Arizona distributor of O&M products.

Swankys Boutique offers fashion-forward clothing and accessories for men and women. Swankys carries brand-name merchandise, including Miss Me, Rock Revival, Free People, Hudson, and Joe’s Jeans, as well as a variety of other items.

This isn’t the first time Michael Alexander Salon & Spa has expanded. The salon opened 12 years ago as HEDZ. It’s since changed names and owners. Current owners JJ Jones and Crystal Fyke have owned the salon for two years, and the grand opening celebration falls on their two-year anniversary of ownership.

“We’re a team-built salon,” Jones said. She noted that former salon owner Lisa Morton is still working with the team as a hairdresser. All of the staff works together to provide the best results for each client.

“Out of the eight stylists that we have, we have accumulated over 150 years of experience in the hair business,” Jones noted. “We’re constantly educating ourselves. We do things together as a team and as a family.”

In Jones’ opinion, the best thing about Michael Alexander Salon & Spa is the camaraderie of the staff. Staff

members brainstorm together, educate each other on new techniques, and fill in for each other as needed.

“Sometimes, we have clients leave for other salons – they often come back and say, “I like it here. I like the atmosphere,’” Jones said. “We’re customer-service oriented.”

See more about Michael Alexander Salon & Spa at www.michaelalexandersalon.com and Swankys Boutique at www.shopswankys.com. The salon/boutique is located at 4215 West Anthem Way, Suite 111, in Anthem.

HALO Rescue offering Chihuahua adoptions

PHOENIX – Throughout the month of May, HALO Animal Rescue is reducing adoption fees for Chihuahua and Chihuahua mixes. All Chihuahuas older than one year have adoption fees of $50 or less as the escue aims to increase the number of Chihuahuas placed in loving homes.

Last year, HALO helped save the lives of more than 7,000 pets, and Chihuahuas currently make up more than 40 percent of dogs in HALO’s shelter. HALO hopes that this promotion will bring more awareness to this popular breed and help even more Chihuahuas find forever homes.

The ‘Aye Chihuahua’ promotion is available at all three HALO Animal Rescue adoption facilities across the Valley: HALO’s main shelter at 2500 S. 27th Avenue; Metro Mall Adoption Center at 9617 N. Metro Parkway West; and PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center at 2901 W. Agua Fria Freeway.

Founded in 1994, HALO Animal Rescue is the largest no-kill animal shelter in Maricopa County and is housed in the west campus of Maricopa Animal Care and Control. Through this partnership, HALO is able to work directly with pets that come in through the county system to find them new homes. In the past 20 years, HALO has helped save the lives of nearly 40,000 pets. For more information, visit www.halorescue.org.

Phoenix Chamber announces IMPACT businesses

PHOENIX – The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce has recognized eight outstanding Valley businesses at the 28th annual IMPACT Awards, with Pinnacle Transplant Technologies and Goodwill of Central Arizona earning accolades as the 2015 IMPACT Businesses of the Year. Pinnacle Transplant Technologies was awarded 2015 IMPACT Business of the Year, in the Small to Medium Business Sector. Founded in 2010, Pinnacle Transplant Technologies recognized the need to establish a processing and distribution facility that would enable medical professionals to acquire quality tissue for transplant. PTT specializes in processing musculoskeletal tissue for use in orthopedic, dental, spine, trauma, and other medical procedures and reconstruction surgeries.

Seatbelt law enforcement stepped up

NORTH VALLEY – Buckle up – not only can wearing a seatbelt save your life, it can also save you from a ticket. In an effort to save more lives on Arizona’s roadways this month, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is partnering with the Phoenix Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies to enforce Arizona’s seat belt and child safety seat laws.

Arizona presently conducts enforcement under a secondary seat belt law and a primary child safety seat law. The enforcement campaign is based upon high visibility traffic enforcement with a “zero-tolerance” approach towards seat belt and child safety seat usage.

As part of a the national ‘Click It or Ticket’ seat belt enforcement campaign, law enforcement agencies across the state will be stepping up traffic enforcement patrols and increasing other enforcement efforts to drive home the message: Buckle Up Arizona…It’s the Law!

Despite widespread efforts to educate drivers about the importance of wearing seat belts, motor vehicles collisions continue to be the leading cause of death and serious injuries to the citizens of our state. The enforcement mobilization will run now through May 31.

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. When worn correctly, seat belts have proven to reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50 percent.

Give your family the coverage it deserves.

JUDY BLUHMI hate endings. I guess I am

not alone. My mother just gave up her car keys and is grieving her independence. My grandson is just finishing middle school and is pretty sad about it. My neighbor passed away. And my beautiful white Arabian horse, named Pegasus, is failing. It is like watching someone in slow motion falling off of a cliff. No action can save him. Time is the thief that robs us, never to give back, leaving us empty and wanting more. He is about twenty-eight years old and has become alarmingly thin and likes to nap most of the day, standing with his head down in the corner of his stall. We feed him anything he wants, but he is not interested. He is tired.

Pegasus is one of the “comeback” stories that endeared him to everyone who knows him. He was a show Arabian horse and at one time had the distinction of actually being in the Rose Bowl Parade. Dressed in his finest saddle and headgear, he must have looked quite handsome prancing with a pretty girl on his back as he strutted for miles through the hoopla of the festivities.

Somehow, Pegasus got tangled up in a messy divorce, ended up being sold quite a few times until he was finally found in a sorry, stinking pen in the desert in California with a drunken owner who neglected and abused him. Standing in filth, flea-ridden and covered with flies, a soldier in the Air Force saw the pitiful animal and borrowed a trailer and bought him for twenty bucks and a bottle of whiskey and hauled him to his parent’s house in Arizona. This soldier was a hero.

Unfortunately, the parents had two bossy mares who did not like the new white Arab, so they had to keep him away

from the other horses for his own safety. Alone and isolated, the new owners did what many “parents” do for when their kids are unhappy. They fed him like there was no tomorrow. Giving him “free choice hay,” it meant that Pegasus ballooned up to one fat, sad horse.

That’s where fate came into play. My lovely old mare, Angel, had recently lost her stall-mate of twenty years to a sudden death from colic. Angel paced the pasture, refused to eat, and wandered around looking for her longtime buddy, Tardy, who had happened to be a white Arabian. A friend told me that there was horse in Phoenix that “needs help” and a new home.

I was warned that Pegasus will not load into a trailer and will need to be medicated by a Vet to haul him. He was beaten with a rubber hose and will never stand for being washed. He will “go ballistic” when the Farrier comes to trim his hoofs because he was injured in the past. He will buck when ridden, rear when tied, kick when getting too close. I was told he was “damaged.” Reluctantly, I went to meet him and saw something else.

The day we drove the trailer to get Pegasus (no Vet required) we opened the back doors wide and I went over to him with a sprig of Lavender (suppose to calm animals). No coaxing needed, he trotted right into the trailer and into his new life. Once home, he pranced around the pasture, in and out of the barn and then took notice of the beautiful brown horse, Angel, who was to be his stall-mate. Of course, Angel was fickle and ignored Pegasus. For three days, she acted as if he did not exist. She would not look at him, go near him, or acknowledge him in any way. I was heart-broken.

On the fourth night I asked Angel to give Pegasus a chance. He was running out of options. Down on his luck. Confused and lonely. In need of a friend. I prayed that night for a miracle. The next morning I woke up to see two horses nuzzling in the arena. And a love was born. Something had happened and from that moment on they were inseparable.

Eventually, Angel began to falter. She was nearing thirty, had cataracts and then got a terrible eye infection that would not heal. She had to have her left eye removed. She was blind. The day she came home from the Equine Hospital, Pegasus was waiting for her. When she got off the trailer, he ran to her and placed his nose all over her face and eyes. He guided her with her head placed at his shoulder, back to her stall. He led her out to the pasture and walked with her until she would venture out alone, never far from him. Angel passed one summer day with Pegasus at her side.

It has been said that there are two defining things that shape our character. One is the patience we have when we have nothing and the other is the attitude we exhibit when we have everything. Pegasus exemplified this. He went from a show-horse to a neglected and sickly beast. He was saved. It didn’t work out. He ran to a new life, going past his fears and hesitation. Pegasus never gave up. He freely gave love. He led his partner through darkness. Best of all, he was able to put all “bad things” behind and start fresh. He never bucked, reared, or kicked.

Some folks might say that Pegasus’s finest moment was when he was strutting in full regalia in the Rose Bowl Parade. I’d say it was when he led an old mare out of despair and darkness through the last year of her life.

My niece says that, “Pegasus’s time is a comin’.” Maybe it’s not an ending, just a different trail.

JUDGE GERALD A. WILLIAMSNORTH VALLEY JUSTICE OF

THE PEACEEach year, our state legislature

considers hundreds of potential new laws. As most of us hopefully remember from a civics class, if a bill passes both the House of Representatives and the Senate in identical form, it goes to the Governor. If the Governor signs it, then it becomes a law and will eventually show up in a set of books called the Arizona Revised Statutes.

Many new laws will impact only a few. For example, one new law gives a homebuilder the right to repair problems before the homeowner can file a lawsuit alleging a construction defect. Others have the potential to impact almost everyone.

There are a few new traffic laws worth knowing about. HB 2308 allows people who receive a civil traffic ticket for a moving violation to have the charge dismissed by going to Defensive Driving School, one ticket within every 12 months. The previous law allowed for driving school attendance every 24

months. Another bill, SB 1064, requires that photo enforcement tickets be sent via certified mail and also posted at the driver’s residence, preferably on the garage door.

Other laws are aimed at panhandling. SB 1094 establishes the new petty offense of aggressive solicitation. It makes it illegal for someone hang out by ATMs and ask for money. SB 1063 expands the misdemeanor offense of obstructing a highway or public thoroughfare to include pushing a walk button, not to cross the street, but to trigger a red light so that the occupants of stopped cars can be asked for money.

Some other laws are just really good ideas. HB 2294 allows a court to order veterans to seek counseling for DUIs, or for domestic violence, not just at a state approved counselor, but also at the Department of Veterans Affairs. One that was a very big deal to me was SB 1116. It authorizes justice courts and city courts to order defendants, who are unable to pay their fines, to perform community service or restitution instead.

Overall, it was a relatively quiet legislative session. For fans of limited government, that is perhaps a good thing.

Phoenix Marine among those lost in Nepal helicopter crash

PHOENIX – Six Marines and two Nepalese soldiers lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Nepal on May 12. The group was on their way to provide humanitarian relief after last month’s deadly earthquake.

The six Marines have been identified as Capt. Dustin R. Lukasiewicz, Capt. Christopher L. Norgren, Sgt. Ward M. Johnson IV, Sgt. Eric M. Seaman, Cpl. Sara A. Medina, and Lance Cpl. Jacob A. Hug. Two Nepalese soldiers were also aboard and have been identified as Tapendra Rawal and Basanta Titara.

Lance Cpl. Hug, 22 years old, was from Phoenix. He enlisted in the Marines just after his graduation from Barry

Goldwater High School in 2012. According to the Marine Corps Times, Hug was a combat videographer assigned to Marine Corps Installations Pacific. His video and photo portfolio can be viewed online at https://www.dvidshub.net/portfolio/1208262/jacob-hug.

Hug and the other five crew members were on their way to deliver food and other supplies to areas of Nepal devastated by the April 25 earthquake. The copter crashed in a forest about 50 miles northeast of Kathmandu, Nepal.

These brave veterans will be especially remembered this Memorial Day as those who gave their all to help others.

Gains, goals of Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years later

JESSICA BOEHMCRONKITE NEWS

NORTH VALLEY – The iconic blue-and-white disability parking tags that appear to be proliferating in Arizona were the first and most recognizable effects of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The ADA, 25 years old this July, has been pivotal in the fight to protect and empower people with disabilities. But advocates say there is still work to be done in the next 25 years.

“We have the law on the books – what’s the next step?” asked J.J. Rico, executive director of the Arizona Center for Disability Law.

For Rico, the goals are clear: Education that meets all students’ needs, inclusive employment settings and more accessible buildings.

Rico said special education is the No. 1 issue his center hears about and he expects it will remain so for years, as advocates work to ensure children with disabilities have access to education without being “restrained or secluded from their classmates.”

“School districts have

obligations to educate all children,” which means children with and without disabilities, Rico said.

Education can help children “move into that employment world,” but the workplace can present its own hurdles for people with disabilities – beginning with the application.

Rico said a job posting might require the ability lift 50 pounds, even if that doesn’t apply to

everyday duties. But a person with a disability may turn away, he said, “screening out people with disabilities” in the process.

If that person lands a job, the ADA requires the employer to make a “good-faith” effort to be sure that employee has what’s needed to perform the job. “That is a mandate – a legal mandate – that an employer reasonably accommodate an employee that has a disability,” Rico said, and it remains one of his centers’ biggest goals.

But the main thing Rico would like to see is a new portrayal of people with disabilities, focusing on individuals’ achievements and abilities and not just their disabilities.

Moving forward, he said, the “voice of the disability community” will focus on the “stories – not just the legal battles – but the stories of the outcomes and the achievements.”

Special parking was one of the first and most visible parts of the 25-year-old Americans with Disabilities Act. Advocates praise the ADA, but say more still needs to be done.

“We Come to You!”

students from lower income homes would no longer be available to participate in sports programs. One commenter said that the board funded district office jobs instead of funding sports.

Deer Valley High School football and track and field coach Eric Bolus said that the has “seen what it (athletic participation fees) does to other districts.”

Describing the current school year, Bolus said, “We have students at the school and not at other districts because there is no fee.”

A Deer Valley High School student addressed the Board, noting that people were upset over not knowing where the funds from the fees would be spent.

“When they can’t see where the money’s going, I can see how that would bother them, and it bothers me becaus by my junior year or my senior year, I may not have a cross-country team to run on,” the student said.

Another commenter called using athletic participation fees to save district jobs a “travesty.”

Jim Migliorino, DVUSD Associate Superintendent of Fiscal and Business Services, spoke after the public commenters, clarifying details and answering Board member questions.

“We have had lengthy

discussions about athletic participation fees over many years,” Migliorino said.

Migliorino described the updated fees, lowered from the original plan, noting that the lower fees were the DVUSD administrative recommendation. The fees as implemented will generate $400,000. The proposed higher fees would have generated $500,000; Migliorino noted that a “non-personnel district department allocation” would be making up the remaining $100,000. Migliorino added that the district is currently paying $2 million for coaches, as well as additional transportation expenses.

Board member Ann Ordway asked Migliorino if the athletic

participation fees would be in addition to or replace the charges already assessed by coaches, saying, “It was my hope that it would not be this fee in addition to” the coaches’ fees, “for this not to be on top of something that is already there.”

Migliorino answered that those fees “are set at the school level currently” and that the

district is now working to establish criteria for those fees. Migliorino also noted that it had not been the district office staff ’s recommendation that athletic participation fees be considered by the Board. While the district finance staff had examined the option of athletic participation fees, this option will need more in-depth review now that it has been implemented.

Superintendent Dr. James Veitenheimer also answered Ordway, noting that doing away with the school-assessed fees would be a “budget cut” for the programs and that it would be like telling schools, “Whatever it was that was there, you don’t get to have that anymore.”

“It is a bear of a concept for sure,” Veitenheimer said. He added that school-assessed fees vary across the district.

Board member Ron Bayer spoke next.

“Well, here we go again,” Bayer said. “The decision that we have to make here is really simple: Do we put more funds in the district office for some unnecessary administrators, or do we put this toward the children? To me, that’s pretty clear-cut. It needs to go to the children.”

Bayer added that in the past, the Board has been “treated to this entourage of people” asking the Board to keep the district administrators. “Not one teacher came up and spoke on their behalf,” Bayer said.

He asked the other Board members not to consider any

athletic participation fees, ending with, “If necessary, we need to eliminate those district office administrators.”

Board member Kimberly Fisher spoke next.

“Half the district office administrators that you see in this room tonight have been cut,” Fisher said. “The reality is we have cut this district office. Dr. Veitenheimer has gone to great lengths to make the cuts that we requested, based on what the governor has done to funding.”

Board member Ann O’Brien noted that the positions saved included teachers who mentor first-year and new-to-the-district teachers.

“I believe athletics are incredibly important to students,” O’Brien said. She noted that athletics are not considered classroom dollars when it comes to state funding and are actually counted as administrative costs that count against the district.

“None of our options were

good,” O’Brien emphasized.

Board president Michael

Gregoire also said that

neither of the budget options

were good choices.

Gregoire said that the reason

everyone was there was to

“educate our kids. To make them

into good adults. Sports does

that. It creates character.”

“This affects kids directly,”

Gregoire said. “Academic

facilitators affect kids indirectly.”

After some procedural

questions, the Board voted.

Bayer and Gregoire voted

against the fees. Fisher, Ordway,

and O’Brien voted for the fees;

the motion passed 3-2.

Board meeting is scheduled for

movie review

MONTE YAZZIEMOVIE COLUMNIST

The excellent a capella songs and bonding solidarity of the underdog Barden Bellas was the heart and soul of “Pitch Perfect”. The sequel, with actress Elizabeth Banks taking over directing duties, continues those elements but amps up the stakes and silliness as most sequels of successful films are always guilty of doing. The music is fantastic again, with a wealth of musical material taking unique shape through the voices of talented singers. While the humor doesn’t always connect as easily as the first film and aspects of the narrative stumble when aiming to one-up the situations of the first film, “Pitch Perfect 2” still has head nodding musical arrangements and continues the spirited and comical aspects to make it an enjoyable and worthy sequel.

The Barden Bellas are the a capella national champions, repeating a few more times since the first. During a concert where the President and First Lady are in attendance, a wardrobe malfunction sends the Bellas into a tailspin of negativity in the international spotlight. Suspended from competing in the national competition, the Bellas decide to prove their worth in the a capella ranks again by competing in the world championships. But the end of college life and the beginning of real world

responsibilities proves to derail the ambitions of the team.

The usual turns, and sometimes flaws, of sequels are present throughout “Pitch Perfect 2”. Everything needs to be bigger, which the script and characters prove here. The screenplay is crammed with moving parts. Beca (Anna Kendrick) is interning at a music studio and is worried about finding validity as more than just an a capella performer. A new singer named Emily (Hailee Steinfeld) auditions for the Bellas and garners her own side story, Fat Amy is given a love story angle, and a rivalry is introduced between a dominating German team. This all happens amidst numerous musical numbers. So it doesn’t surprise that some characters are given the back seat and some

scenes come out of nowhere for no particular purpose. However, this isn’t always a bad thing because the added scenes are welcome additions and are usually assisted with great music. Also, any opportunity for Rebel Wilson to steal a scene with comedy is always appreciated. It helps that the focus of the film never strays too far from what makes it so good, which is the a capella performance and the friendship and goals that keep these young ladies strong.

There are a few unexpected surprises that compliment the story, one being the addition of comedian Keegan-Michael Key, of television sketch comedy show “Key and Peele”, who plays an arrogant record producer. There are also a few that don’t compliment. The international competition angle lacks creativity, with the Germans getting the only foreign spotlight. And, some of the deliberate stereotyping of characters, one of the Bellas specifically, is rarely humorous.

“Pitch Perfect 2” succumbs to some of the pitfalls associated with sequels, but for the most part director Elizabeth Banks maneuvers through or past many of them. Even though the film is busy and sometimes disorganized, the playfulness is always elevated and the result is a purely entertaining a capella experience.

SHEA STANFIELDARTS COLUMNIST

Award winning figure skater and movie star Sonja Henie once commented, “Jewelry takes people’s minds off your wrinkles!” Well, local jewelry artist Aubree Overfield has made it her business to create sparkle, dazzle, and “bling” that promises to distract from any “imperfections” her client may have.

Aubree is as wild and crazy as she is focused and creative. Growing up in Phoenix, she was born with an edgy, push-the-envelope attitude within the conventional structures of button down society. Attending a high school that required students to done boring and colorless uniforms, Aubree began jumping out of the box of conformity wearing her own jewelry creations. Needless to say, this landed her up in the Dean’s office on more than one occasion with: “you’ve got some explainin’ to do!”

Ironically, it was a high school requirement, for community service hours that ignited the flame of Aubree’s creative wildfire. A local thrift shop gladly provided the opportunity for her to complete her required time by putting her to work untangling mounds of donated costume jewelry. Here, endless possibilities emerged from the mounds of tangled chains,

colored beads, and bangles. Not to let this opportunity go to waste, Aubree quickly put her knowledge of wire wrap and beading to work in making her own original creations from castoff treasures.

Aubree did not see her hobby and fascination with jewelry making as career choice, in the beginning. She strayed back to the buttoned-down path of regimented schooling just long enough to earn a degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice. Her dream, at that point, was to become an FBI agent. As Aubree worked her way toward that goal, reality began to set in; a career FBI agent may not be what it’s cracked up to be. A self proclaimed gamer, loving survival horror, action, shooter, story driven, and cooperative games with her husband and

friends, Aubree is now getting her action fix from the safety of her own space.

Today, Aubree Overfield is back outside the box with her own jewelry business online. She draws from her love of 1920s through 1940s fashion and swing, everything colorful, dazzling, untamed in constant motion, looking for fun.

To view a collection of jewelry styles, commission your own creations, or repurpose those old costume pieces, visit Aubree’s online store at www.cityunderthesea.com and support a local lady with worldly talent! Meet Aubree and take a look at her “geek” inventory at this year’s AZ Game On Expo at the Mesa Convention Center, August 28-30 in Mesa, Arizona, www.Azgameonexpo.com.

Registration open for county teen leadership program

PHOENIX – Registration is now open for Valley youths interested in participating in the Maricopa County Teen Leadership Experience, a county-sponsored summer learning experience that introduces youth ages 12-17 to the county government operations.

Departments from Animal Care and the sheriff ’s office to the trial courts across Maricopa County open up their doors and invite youth to join and learn. The MCLE program runs June 1- July 31.

This self-directed program provides the opportunity for teens to choose a schedule that suits them. They will attend at least two on-site experiences in each of three areas – government, community, and the environment; complete at least ten hours of volunteer work; and participate in Maricopa County’s Library District’s Summer Reading Program.

Once they sign up for the

summer reading, participants schedule their volunteer hours, workshops and meetings with various county departments. MCLE offers a wide variety of interactive and educational experiences such as: a Deputy Sheriff ride-along, teen court jurors, animal care and control volunteerism, job training and resume boot camp, stadium and district office tour, and much more. Participants who fulfill the program requirements receive a certificate of completion at the year-end celebration event.

“We are proud of the workshops and volunteer opportunities provided by more than 20 county departments; helping teens explore how individual communities and our governments can work together to make Maricopa County a great place,” commented Board Chairman Steve Chucri. “While MCLE experiences are fun and wide-ranging, the program was designed to support academic and career goals, encouraging students to be lifelong learners

and problem-solvers.” The MCLE program is

sponsored by the Human Services Department. Bruce Liggett, HSD Director, stated, “We at Maricopa County take pride in our government. County departments are offering youth an inside look at their organization and how they serve their customers and general public. Parents and guardians, community leaders, and educators should encourage youth to participate in MCLE. It’s an opportunity to increase a youth’s knowledge about Maricopa County government, create potential career pathways, and it keeps youth engaged and active throughout the summer.”

New River street signs vandalizedNEW RIVER – New River

had a visit from some vandals this week. Street signs along New River Road, from the I-17 interchange to the Welcome to New River sign, were vandalized with yellow material.

Vandalism may not be a violent offense, but it’s definitely an expensive one. According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, vandalism in the form of graffiti costs millions of dollars per year to clean up, and that’s just in Maricopa County.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office Community Action Bureau has a strict prosecution policy for graffiti, including over three years in prison, loss of a driver’s license or ability to get a license until age 18, and possible payment to victims. Additionally, courts may impose fines up to $150,000, and a minor vandal’s parents may be held liable up to $10,000.

If you see an act of vandalism

in progress, call 911. If you have

information about this or other

vandalism, contact Maricopa

County Sheriff ’s Office at (602)

876-1011 or Phoenix Police

Department at (602) 262-6151.

Kiwanis Carefree donates to CCUSD preschool program

NORTH VALLEY – Financially strapped working parents with preschool-aged children got a helping hand on May 12 when Bob Swan, President of Kiwanis Club of Carefree presented a $10,000 Kiwanis Club of Carefree Benefit Foundation check to Education & Community Services, a department of Cave Creek Unified School District.

The funds will provide scholarships for underprivileged families of preschoolers. Gina Durbin, ECS Director, accepted the check to much applause during the Cave Creek Unified School District Governing Board meeting.

“Whenever possible, members of the Kiwanis Club of Carefree try to help kids succeed in life. Every kid, underprivileged or otherwise, has the same potential just waiting to blossom,” said Swan. “We look at the Education & Community Services Save One Student program as helping to level the opportunity playing field, and are happy to support it.”

The Save One Student (SOS) Project allows preschool age children who need financial assistance to attend preschool. SOS enables working parents with limited income to have a safe and developmentally stimulating place for their preschoolers while their parents are at work.

Recipients of SOS financial support will attend Child’s Play Preschool, founded in 1988 by Education & Community

Services, CCUSD. Historically, a total of 125 to 130 children are enrolled annually in Child’s Play Preschool. Of those, 6 to 15 children have required assistance.

ECS Child’s Play Preschool (for ages 3 to 5) has four locations in the Cave Creek Unified School District serving families in North Phoenix, North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree. Enrollment in CCUSD is not required.

“Child’s Play Preschool believes children should be given an opportunity to create their own knowledge by actively exploring their inside and outside environments,” said Jenny Stahl, ECS Early Childhood Coordinator. “With our low teacher-to-student ratio (1:10), we provide a safe, special

place for children and families to grow physically, socially and cognitively through their daily experiences.”

Before and After Care, STEM, Spanish Immersion, A Touch of Chinese Immersion, A Touch of Spanish Immersion, ABC Music and Me, Character Counts, Get Ready to Read, Love and Logic®, and Developmental Preschool are offered at various Child’s Play Preschool sites.

Full and partial financial aid funds are available for ECS Child’s Play Preschool, as well as other ECS programs such as Kindergarten Prep, Ramp Up Reading, middle and high school academic retrieval courses, and Super Camp. Call (480) 575-2440 for more information or visit www.cavecreekpreschool.com.

Pets of the Week: August and AprilOMG…Look at this pair

of sugar babies! August and April were rescued after being dropped off at Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital. The resident who found them kept a watchful eye out for their mother, but sadly she never returned.

This brother and sister duo was bottle fed and socialized by one of our very best foster moms. They are highly active, healthy, and very happy little kitties. August and April like nothing more than to play and frolic about. They are super sweet and have loads of charm and character. They zip around the room like lightning, and you should hear them purr! You’re sure to fall in love the moment you hold them in the palm of your hand. As a result, you may decide to adopt them together!

April (female) and August (male) are approximately 6 weeks old. At the time of adoption, they will be neutered/spayed, microchipped, and will have their first round of kitten vaccinations. Please call Anthem

Pets today at (480) 287-3542 to schedule a meet and greet or email us at [email protected]. Don’t delay; these cuties will get adopted fast!

Please visit our Web site to view many more dogs, kittens, and cats available for adoption: anthempets.org. We need fosters, too!

Anthem Pets is a nonprofit organization serving lost, found, and abandoned animals in the North Valley since 2005. Operating on donations only, it aims to find forever homes for abandoned

animals and return wayward pets

to owners. For more information

about our rescue and other beautiful

animals awaiting their forever

home, please visit anthempets.org.

Comfortaire® has been delivering Individualized SleepExperiences™ for over 30 years. The air bed we invented provided an independently adjustable surface by utilizing

latex-cotton air chambers. While our original design is functional, and has been the industry standard, Comfortaire®

is and always will be an innovator. Our time tested line of adjustable sleep systems, enable the users to adjust either side oftheir mattress at any time for any reason. If you feel different tonight than last night, simplypush the button and change your bed.

The pressure within the air chamber is exactly the same everywhere. So although yourpointy body parts will settle deeper into the mattress than your other parts, the mattressdoes not push back any harder on those parts than any others. Unlike other mattress typesthat can cause a numb, sore or even tingly sensation, particularly in the hips and shoulders, our products provide a deeper more motionless sleep with less tossing and turning.

This is really two beds wrapped up in one cover. Therefore, motion transfer from side to sideis reduced dramatically. If she is still tossing and turning, at least it will have very little affecton his side of the bed.
