teaching and learning,” Fleming said, noting that the DVUSD creates a culture of high expectations and collaboration. “Through the process of working collaboratively and the expectation of ‘extraordinary’, we are able to see our staff and students excel!”

“The fact that all DVUSD K-8 Schools in Anthem are A+ Schools of Excellence speaks volumes to the rigor and high quality of education we provide our students,” said Canyon Springs STEM Academy Principal Tricia Graham. “We meet the varied needs of all learners, from students with special needs to the profoundly gifted students in our Renaissance and gifted programs. Collectively, we are able to offer specialized programs that meet the varied interests of our students which include foreign languages like Mandarin and Spanish, as well as highly sought after STEM programs and instruction with technology integration. We are truly preparing our students for worldly experiences as well as 21st century jobs in engineering, computer science, and many more careers that do not yet exist!”

Fleming noted that Gavilan Peak decided as a team that this year was a great year to apply for the A+ distinction, particularly

since the school has been making great strides academically.

“As a team, we decided that our school has made such great leaps and bounds the past few years and our AZMerit scores came out as one of the top in the region and top 5 in the district, so we thought this was our year to showcase our amazing students and staff!” Fleming said.

The application process is comprehensive; each school offered over 40 pages of data, utilizing information from students, staff, parents, and community partners.

“Canyon Springs decided to apply to be an A+ School of Excellence in August,” said Graham. “Our team spent a lot of time gathering data and information and reflecting upon areas of strength and where we can improve.” Graham credited teachers Christen Franklin, Angela Grimm, Stephanie Stephens, and Britnee Abrams for putting many hours of work into the application process and creating an excellent application, which resulted in a school visit from four judges who were or are currently principals of A+ School of Excellence schools, and ultimately, the school receiving the A+ designation.

For the Canyon Springs and Gavilan Peak staff and students, the A+ award confirms what they already know – their schools are exceptional.

“I am incredibly proud of where we have come from and where we are today,” Graham

said. “We are a leader in STEM education with a true focus on 21st century learning. I think we have built an amazing culture where all voices are heard, innovation, meeting the needs of all learners, and high expectations are key...and a place where change is good when needed, and all decisions are made based on what is best for students.”

“Our staff is one that sticks together and supports each other and our community without question,” Fleming said. “If they know there is a family in need, they pull together and raise funds, food, or any support that family needs. If we are short staffed for a day or something out of the ordinary happens and we need help.....there are numerous staff members that

jump in to help without being even being asked. This staff is the type that sees a problem and works together to solve it. There is a strong family feel here! Our students are the other part that makes this campus exceptional. Our students are compassionate, hardworking, and natural leaders.”

In their A+ School of Excellence application, Gavilan Peak quoted students who described some of the things Gavilan Peak has helped them learn.

“I have learned a lot at Gavilan Peak. They have helped me learn about outreach and giving back to others through National Elementary Honor Society,” said 5th grader Cassidy.

Ava, another student, said she had learned “to be a better

leader and to be respectful to others” at Gavilan Peak.

Canyon Springs’ application also included testimonials from parents and student at the school.

“The culture promotes students to be proud of their school and it’s truly like a community as my kids report their daily interactions with other students, teachers and staff,” reported G. Kaye, Canyon Springs parent.

“We love our STEM program and half day investigations. We have fun while still learning,” said students Marissa, Faith, and Kaely.

“It is always my goal to have the staff LOVE to come to work,” Graham said of the caring atmosphere at Canyon Springs. “When that happens, our students will LOVE to come to school and our parents will LOVE that their children love school at Canyon Springs.”

“With our school motto as ‘Learn, Lead, Create’, our students demonstrate this daily with their community service projects, school culture, and innovative thinking,” Fleming said of Gavilan Peak. “Our students thrive to do their best and come to school ready to learn and make a difference every day.”

Canyon Springs celebrated their award last week. Gavilan Peak will hold a celebration on Tuesday, May 17, 9:30 a.m., and the community is invited to attend.

City of Phoenix participates in Building Safety Month

PHOENIX – To help raise awareness of building safety, the city of Phoenix is proudly celebrating Building Safety Month during May. Building Safety Month is a public safety awareness campaign to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe, resilient, affordable, and energy-efficient homes and buildings.

Each year, presidential, gubernatorial, and municipal proclamations are approved to bring attention to Building Safety Month. This year’s theme is Building Codes: Driving Growth through Innovation, Resilience and Safety.

Homes and buildings that are built in compliance with building safety codes result in resilient structures that minimize the risks of death, injury, and property damage. Regardless of the department code officials work in, they work hard every day to provide public

safety by ensuring buildings are constructed safely.

The International Code Council, a U.S.-based membership association, created Building Safety Month as a public service to promote safety in the built environment. Code Council members develop the family of International Codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities use the Council’s codes.

seeking an additional $100,000 in funds from donors to cover the costs of the project. Unexpected costs incurred during the expansion caused the food bank to seek additional donations, which can be accepted through its Web site.

“We have already incurred extra costs because we had to remove some trees unexpectedly,” said DiPietro.

The Foothills Food Bank will remain in the building so it stays operational during the expansion, but expect

minimal parking on site during construction. Over the past year, the food bank has seen a 20 percent growth in the needs of its client base, which sparked the Foothills Food Bank to begin its Capital Building Campaign last year to help finance the expansion. It received a $150,000 grant from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, bringing the total amount raised to $247,845 of the estimated $400,000 needed, according to DiPietro.

“They are really moving along with this construction, and with how fast they are moving it might be done before 90 days, but I am not holding my breath

on that,” she said.Currently, the food bank

has to lease space outside of its building to accommodate growing demand for its expanding client base for services in food boxes, education programs, and government sponsored initiatives such as the snack pack program, which provides children on free and reduced lunch programs in the Cave Creek Unified School District with food items to take home on days they don’t attend school. Once the expansion is completed, the food bank can bring these programs back into its own building.

Around the Bluhmin’ Town

JUDY BLUHMThe lawsuit is coming! Oh yes,

those four, provocative words can cause one to shudder with fear. Or burst out into fits of laughter. Looks like the lawyers are having all the fun lately, sort of like having a party and getting to eat all of the cake. First, we have the “distressed” lady in Chicago who is suing Starbucks because (hold onto your hats, Dear Readers, as this will shock you) iced coffee has ice in it! The nerve of those little baristas putting ice in my Iced Latte! It all gets down to trust (according to the attorney handling the case) and “truth in advertising.”

Okay, I get it. I want a Venti Iced Latte, which is supposed to be 24 ounces of coffee. Instead, it appears it might be only about 14-16 ounces of coffee and the rest is ice. Sort of like the “Foot-Long” fiasco at Subway. When a group of people sued because the foot-long sandwiches are really only eleven inches long!

Once again, the public is being lied to and manipulated. We want what we are paying for!

One might ask, where does this all end? Shall we start counting French fries at McDonald’s? Start weighing the quarter-pounders? Hey, it is a known fact that the food industry has been squeezing the consumer for quite some time. Our 16 ounces of potato chips are now 14 ounces and every single product seems to be smaller in weight and volume and higher in price. What are we to do?

Bring in the lawyers! It is not right that the box of “fishies” that my grandson loves are actually just a bunch of crackers shaped like fish. What, no seafood in those little fishies? And what about a Mars Bar? It is not made in some far-away planet as the name implies, it is just another Earthly confection. Isn’t that fraud? We already know that packages of Parmesan cheese contain sawdust as a filler. Hey, that sounds pretty darn dangerous. Go out to eat at a fancy restaurant, order the Parmesan sole, and get a splinter? Ouch.

It has been a week of weird lawsuits. My favorite is the one in England brought about by a fifteen year old red-headed lad who is suing his parents for two million pounds. Why? It seems that both his parents have bright red hair and so do his two older siblings. So this kid (nut) believes his parents must “pay up” because they chose to conceive him, since they would have surely known that he would be born with red

hair. And due to this, he has “suffered” immensely, being bullied, called “carrot top” and “spotty face” (for his freckles). In other words, he claims his parents were “irresponsible” for having him!

Gee, shall we all cheer (or jeer) for the Solicitor to bring this to court? Guess it might get thrown out, but the fact that someone (idiot) with a law degree even filed a claim, is pretty mind-boggling. Sort of like the poor guy in Italy. Yes, here is a man who is suing his wife and her family because they are sneaking him a “love potion” that has kept him married for over twenty years. So what is the problem? The husband told the judge that his wife is “mean, fat and ugly” and yet he refuses to divorce her because of the “secret love potion” she is giving him. When asked to elaborate on this “potion” the man only cried, “What else could explain the fact that I am still married to her?” The judge then asked, “Could it be too much red wine?”

Oh yea, the lawyers are having a whole lot of fun this week. But not all things are laughable. There is a woman in California who was arrested for tax evasion. She is suing her husband (who was also charged) because she claims she just “signed on the dotted line” when he brought her the tax returns, and she never really read them. For some reason, the Internal Revenue Service does not like it when we say “we had no idea what we were signing.” People, we must read those documents!

Let’s have a great week by going out and getting a nice cuppa Joe at the local java store. Make it iced. Go easy on the ice. Okay, make it COLD and forget the ice! Or, let’s get a foot-long (and I am taking my measuring tape) sandwich. And try not to be mad at your parents because you were born. If you have red hair and freckles, feel blessed. Oh and if you’d like a “love potion,” maybe switch to a glass of Italian red wine. No lawsuits required.

SNOWBIRDSWELCOME!

Carefree Councilmember Melissa Price announces she will not seek re-election

TARA ALATORRESTAFF

CAREFREE – Carefree Councilmember Melissa Price announced she will not be seeking re-election for her seat or any other open public office position in the town’s upcoming elections, in an exclusive statement sent to The Foothills Focus last week.

Price recently submitted the election packet with the town clerk, Kandace French, which is required to begin the candidacy process in the town’s upcoming primary elections this August. Instead, she announced he is not running for mayor or any of the six open council seats to be filled.

“After much consideration, I have decided NOT to run for Mayor,” she said in an email statement sent to the Focus.

At this point, Price says she only filed the packet when she was “considering” running for Mayor, and took the necessary steps while she explored the possibility of her candidacy. She turned down the opportunity to

run for Mayor during the last election cycle, she said in her email to the Focus.

“I have given five years to public service now, and I am looking more and more to future projects that benefit me personally – I think its’s time,” Price said.

Price has served Carefree as a councilmember for five years, and in 2011 she was appointed Vice Mayor. Reflecting on her time in office, she says she feels great about her accomplishments, and seeing the town’s development.

“I feel blessed to have worked with some truly great people that have also given ‘free’ time and contributed both time and money to help make Carefree a more vibrant Town,” she said in her statement. Price would not comment specifically on what her next plans were, only insinuating she had things in the making.

“Lots of irons in the fire and I’m still considering my options so no concrete plans at this time,” she said.

Carefree’s primary elections will be held on Aug. 30; all six council seats are up for election, as well as the mayor seat. ZIYI ZENGCRONKITE NEWS

PHOENIX – For more than 10 years, professor Stephen Johnston and a team of researchers at Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute have been developing a cancer vaccine aimed at preventing all types of cancer.

Johnston said his vaccine has passed safety trials nd is moving on to efficacy trials in dogs.

Johnston said one of the biggest challenges in developing a preventive cancer vaccine is finding common mutations in different tumors. For example, tumors presented in melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer, can have thousands of variations.

He said this has led many researchers in the medical community to view creating a universal vaccine as impossible.

Most of the research so

far has focused on the DNA level, Johnston said. However, when he looked at the RNA level – another form of genetic information – he discovered common mutations across many tumors.

So is a vaccine possible?“I do not know,” he said.

“There is maybe a 50-50 chance it might work. If it works in dogs, I’m almost sure it would work in people.”

Johnston said other researchers have questioned the viability of his concept.

In an unpublished article, he pointed out that “the industry is responsible for over $200 billion directly spent on cancer in the U.S. each year.”

“Any time you have a group that’s making a lot of money and their living depends on it … that community is based on people getting cancer,” Johnston said. “Imagine what would

happen if someone tomorrow announced that here is evidence that you can take this vaccine, and you won’t get cancer.”

There are some approved preventative cancer vaccines. However, they target specific types of cancer, such as cervical cancer.

There are also cancer treatment vaccines, but most are only available through clinical trials, according to cancer.net.

Arizona’s cancer rate is among the lowest in the nation, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It found that 373 out of every 100,000 Arizona men and women got cancer in 2012, the most recent data available. The national incidence rate was 440 cases per 100,000. The only other state with a lower rate was New Mexico.

Daisy Mountain Veterans volunteers creating sleeping mats for the homeless

NORTH VALLEY – A place to lay your head – it’s one of the most basic human needs there is. For people who are living on the streets, this need becomes incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to fill, and simple comforts like blankets and sleeping mats are hard to come by.

The Daisy Mountain Veterans volunteers want to help. Volunteers are crocheting easily portable, cleanable sleeping mats from plastic bags and giving them out to those who are living on the streets.

Daisy Mountain Veterans volunteer Mary Ann Derryberry reported that the volunteers have been making sleeping mats for about a month now. The project was started when a local resident told volunteers about a Laveen group making sleeping mats for the homeless.

“I thought they were a terrific idea,” Derryberry said. “I thought, ‘We can get this going up here.’”

Derryberry noted that she asked someone who had been in this situation about the sleeping mats project, and that person told her it would “absolutely be a good thing” to do.

“We’re going to give them to whomever

we can find,” said Derryberry. Some

volunteers will carry mats in their cars

to give to those in need. The veterans

group is also in contact with the St. Rose

Church food pantry and will be providing

sleeping mats for them to give out.

“It’s a nice way for those who want

to help and just don’t know how,”

Derryberry said. “For a truly homeless

person, it would be very appreciated.”

Creating the mats from plastic bags

takes several steps, including cutting the bags into strips, chaining the strips together and rolling them into a ball, and then crocheting the strips into the final product.

Derryberry noted that she doesn’t crochet, but multiple other volunteers do. Right now, the group’s biggest need is for help in cutting and chaining the bags.

“There are several steps that people could do,” she said. “People don’t have to know how to crochet to help.”

The majority of the work on the mats is done at volunteers’ home; a group meeting is held monthly to facilitate the process.

It takes between 500 and 700 bags to make one mat, so another necessity for the project is space to store the bags. Garage space or backroom storage at an office to store the bags is greatly needed, so if you’d like to help out but don’t have much time to do so, offering storage space would be beneficial.

If you would like to help in creating these sleeping mats, contact Derryberry at [email protected] or attend the next meeting on May 19, 6:30 p.m., at the Anthem Civic Building.

“Anybody can email me, and I can show them exactly how to do it,” Derryberry offered.

Run was held in his honor. MCSO Academy class #138 led the run, accompanied by local residents who wished to join them.

Coleman, who was a north valley resident, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Jan. 8, 2012, while responding to a burglary call in Anthem. He had served 20 years with MCSO and was highly respected throughout the community and by those with whom he served.

During the Deputy Coleman Memorial Run, the academy

class ran 4.2 miles and completed 977 exercise repetitions in the Coleman Memorial Field at the Anthem Community Park. Multiple first-responder units, including MCSO helicopter #977, were on-site for the run. Coleman’s serial number was 977, and the helicopter was designated #977 in his honor.

The first memorial run in 2015 met with strong community support, and MCSO now plans to make it an academy tradition, honoring the memory of a local hero.

Creativity Takes CourageSHEA STANFIELDARTS COLUMNIST

Well-known Impressionist artist Henri Matisse reflected, “Creativity takes courage.”

Courage in creativity certainly describes local ceramic/porcelain artist Les Lawrence. His trip through the “slipstream” of possibilities has spanned the decades from the 1960s to present day with a virtual “Magical Mystery Tour” of useful and ornamental art forms.

Born in Texas, Les grew up enjoying the exploration of object components. During his childhood, he tirelessly disassembled and assembled objects that caught his interest and imagination. In Les’s case, as he entered his teens, it was hot rods and custom cars that focused his creative talents as he dreamed of one day designing automobiles. In 1963, Les received his B.A. Degree in Commercial Art from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. His first employment was as an illustrator for a large department store, but this did not satisfy his desire to create in three-dimension. By 1964, Les enrolled at Texas Tech University, where he found ceramics, sculpture, art history, and watercolor. At the same time, he connected with a group of older students that were pushing the envelope on kiln construction, pug-mill design, welding techniques, and foundry techniques. A star was

born in the world of 3-D art.Les accepted his first teaching

position at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, TX, where he established the ceramic and sculpture department. Here, he found the opportunity to build kilns and a foundry for the program, as well as keeping on top of a rigorous schedule teaching drawing, commercial art, and art history. Once the HSU’s program was firmly established, Les returned to academia for his MFA in Art/Ceramics at Arizona State University. Here, he found the freedom to further expand his kiln building techniques and focus on his own work in ceramics. This milestone catapulted him into a position with Grossmont College in San Diego, where he would spend the next 35 years heading up their ceramics department. Before retiring in 2005, Les was honored with the Faculty of the Year Award. Going out on a high note, Les and his wife Jaye moved their studio and talents to Carefree, Arizona.

“Courage in Creativity” has been the place Les Lawrence has lived for decades. He pioneered the development of photographic silkscreen onto wet clay. This evolved into mono prints on clay using oil based ink with ceramic pigments. This innovation would become one of Les’ signature techniques as he moved forward into sculptural highfire porcelain sculptures. Through the years, Les’ work gained notoriety nationally and internationally, exhibiting his work in over 290 exhibitions. He is among the list of Who’s Who in American Art, The West, California, and International Education. His popularity, as a lecturer earned Les invitations to share his expertise in Hungary, New Zealand, England, Wales, and Korea.

Les Lawrence’s courageously innovative techniques have made him a “standout artist” with collectors nationally and internationally for many years. A few of the public collections that house Les’ premier work include Museum of Arts and Design-New York, American Museum of Ceramic Arts-California, and Aberyswyth University Ceramic Collection-England. His Web site features a complete list of collections, featuring his most prized pieces. In addition, Les’ work appears in over 30 books documenting art techniques and innovation over the decades.

To discover details of Les’ journey into the collective conscious of noted art historians, and his influence on the American art scene, visit his Web site, www.leslawrence.com. Les’ work continues to be fantastic fun, delightfully whimsical, mysteriously provocative, and amazingly insightful. Perhaps, you too will find one of his “conversation” pieces gracing your “digs” luring family and friends into the most interesting conversations.

Caurus Academy: Focusing on an individualized approach to educationANTHEM – “Learners today.

Leaders tomorrow.” That’s the motto at Caurus Academy.

Caurus students are happy to share how much they love their school, greeting visitors with handshakes and “Welcome to Caurus!” and “We’re happy that you’re visiting.” Students’ engagement in their learning is evident throughout the school.

Caurus principal Dameon Blair notes that the K-8 charter school offers an individualized approach to education and uses the Responsive Classroom model.

“We know that happy kids do well in school,” Blair said. He detailed some of the Caurus programs, including morning meetings in each classroom, assemblies led by the eighth graders each Friday, and student recognition for showing Caurus

C.A.R.E.S. qualities. Caurus first received AdvancED

accreditation three years ago and has continued to receive this distinguished award each year since. In addition to the traditional, rigorous classroom education, instruction at Caurus Academy includes PE classes in the school gym, sports for

middle schoolers, art classes, and music classes from Rhapsody School of Music. Blair noted that every student receives Spanish instruction that goes beyond basic language instruction and offers a “very cultural experience.” Caurus will be implementing a new math curriculum and has purchased 90 Chromebooks to further technological instruction.

Caurus Academy has seen a rebound in growth since Blair became principal two years ago. In that time, enrollment has grown from 163 students to 254 students. The average class size is 22-23 students, and next year, Blair says the class size average will be 17-18 students. While the school is growing to two homerooms per five different grade levels, Blair plans to keep Caurus small and personal, preserving the close-knit student community.

“Our family joined Caurus Academy looking for something ‘better’ in education. Immediately, we realized we had found one of the ‘best,’” parent and PTO board member Leigh Steele said in a Caurus testimonial.

“My husband and I are continually impressed at the fervor in which principal Dameon Blair and his faculty strive for excellence and integrity in education,” Steele continued. “The staff recognizes that learning doesn’t always have to look conventional to be successful. Teachers deepen student bonds and trust by forging a mutually-beneficial classroom learning environment. This manifests in a whole-child approach to education as well as the notion that discovery can happen in dynamic and innovative ways.”

“Great schools embrace that academics

goes beyond learning with the brain; it encompasses the heart and spirit of a kid as well,” Steele said. “In great schools like Caurus, students flourish socially, emotionally, and academically.”

Blair calls himself a “passionate leader” and says the staff at Caurus is equally enthusiastic about providing an exceptional, individualized education for every student.

“I believe in the families and the teachers here,” Blair emphasized.

See more about Caurus Academy at www.caurusacademy.org. The school is located at 41900 N. 42nd Ave., on the west side of Anthem.

MOVIE COLUMNISTA splash page in comic book

terms is a full page, sometimes two page, illustration that is meant to set the mood and grab the reader’s attention. These iconic images would often show the hero meeting the villain for the first time or introduce the reader to a new world in a far off planet or alternate dimension. However, none grabbed my attention more than the images of hero vs. hero altercations, and few were as effectively captivating as Marvel Comics “Civil War” saga that set an entire team of heroes against one another.

The Marvel cinematic universe has crafted an exceptional world where all their superhero characters can coexist with one another if the setting calls for it. While inviting more people to the party has potential to confuse elements, Marvel’s world has taken meticulous steps to establish all the characters and their motivations, we know who and what Captain America stands for, we know how Iron Man will respond to conflict; this is one of the primary reasons a film as jam-packed with characters and storylines like “Captain America: Civil War” is works so well.

The Avengers have battled hordes of flying aliens and a powerful living automaton. They have prevented the world from coming to an abrupt end numerous times, though in the process have left a trail of damage, destruction, and devastation. After a recent battle to prevent another weapon of mass destruction from getting into the wrong hands, significant collateral damage in Lagos, Nigeria provokes the action of

world leaders to put limitations and stipulations on the activities of The Avengers. Steve “Captain America” Rogers (Chris Evans) is conflicted with the decision to comply with these measures, while Tony “Ironman” Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is assured that the actions of The Avengers have consequences and they need to held accountable and regulated. This becomes a significant rift within the team, placing allegiances on the side of Captain America and Ironman. Further complicating the situation is Captain America’s old friend Bucky “The Winter Soldier” Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who reappears as the primary target in a deadly explosion.

The superhero film continues to get bigger and bigger, packing more action and more characters into their films in a consistent game of movie one-upmanship. However, Marvel has taken their time, over many years now, establishing these characters. Ironman has three standalone films and Captain America has two, and the viewer has an in-depth understanding of the history shared individually and between each of these characters, which is why the subsequent battle brings about as much emotion as it does. It should be stated that those coming into this film without any prior Marvel character film knowledge may have a difficult time keeping up; however, the film does its best to try to explain the events that have led up to this point.

While this film may have a primary emphasis on Captain America, this is very much an Avengers film. Most of the team is here, with the exception of Thor and Bruce “The Hulk”

Banner, but there are also some new recruits. The Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), the prince and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, joins the team to capture the wanted Bucky Barnes. In a clever addition, directors Anthony and Joe Russo give a refreshing spin to the familiar Spiderman (Tom Holland) story. In every scene, the teenage Peter Parker, with a finally recognizable New York accent, adds a youthful comedic charm to cut into the serious

tone just when it seems to be taking over. Even the recurring characters have their place in the film; Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff continues to play a critical role within the team structure of The Avengers, Wanda “Scarlett Witch” Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) have an interesting chemistry, Sam “Falcon” Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Clint “Hawkeye” Barton (Jeremy Renner) have some good moments with Captain America, and Scott “Ant-Man” Lang (Paul Rudd) steals every moment in his small cameo in the film. Again, just reading these last few lines may call out warning signs to some viewers thinking that this many characters all in one film would be a mess – they are all utilized effectively and play their role, big or small, within the film excellently.

We’ve talked about a wealth of heroes, but what about the villain? Here lies the small issue with “Captain America: Civil War”. Talented actor

Daniel Brühl plays Zemo, a mysterious terrorist with an equally mysterious motivation. Brühl is hardly utilized and the villainous plot that he puts into action doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’s not hard to question the lack of attention paid to this aspect when the whole reason for this film is to see Team Ironman face off against Team Captain America. And once the amazing, jaw-dropping action scene everyone is waiting for happens at an airport, it becomes much harder to pick out the flaws when you just watched a comic book splash page come to life. However, once the dust settles, questions arise.

“Captain America: Civil War” is an enjoyable and fun experience. Even though the film tackles more serious subjects this time around, you can sense darker days on the rise for the characters in the future. While some narrative points, specifically those concerning the villains, don’t completely connect one action to another in the long run, the superhero franchise at work here has established enough confidence throughout their film journey that they can pull off a showcase this complicated with ease. While “Captain America: Civil War” may not be the best film in the Marvel cinematic universe, it is definitely one of the best ensemble superhero films the studio has put together so far.

NORTH VALLEY – In an effort to save more lives on Arizona’s roadways this month, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is partnering with the Yavapai County Sheriff ’s Office and local law enforcement agencies to enforce Arizona’s seat belt and child safety seat laws.

“Even though Arizona is a secondary law state for seatbelt usage, law enforcement officers will be taking a zero tolerance approach on drivers who are

in violation of state law,” said Alberto Gutier, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

As part of a the national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign, law enforcement agencies across the state will be stepping up traffic enforcement patrols and increasing other enforcement efforts to drive home the message: Buckle Up Arizona…It’s the Law!

Despite widespread efforts to educate drivers about the

importance of wearing seat belts, motor vehicle collisions continue to be the leading cause of death and serious injuries to Arizonans. The enforcement mobilization will run from May 23 through June 5.

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. When worn correctly, seat belts have proven to reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50 percent.

The proper and consistent use of child safety seats has been found to reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants (younger than 1 year old) and by 54 percent for toddlers (1 to 4 years old) in passenger cars. Properly installed booster seats reduce the risk for serious injury by 45 percent among children ages 4 to 8 years old.

Funding is provided by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. See http://www.azgohs.gov/ for additional information.

Pet of the Week: HudsonMeet Hudson, a seriously

handsome guy who has been waiting for a home since January. Hudson was rescued from the streets of Anthem where he was begging for love from strangers.

He is about 6 years old and is very affectionate and social. Even though he was a stray, his personality shows that he was once a house cat. He is eager for attention, loves to be petted, and even likes to be held. He is diabetic but this is easily controlled by two simple-to-administer insulin injections twice a day.

The injections don’t even faze him. He would do well in a household where he is the only

pet, for he loves to be the king

of the house. However, with a

slow introduction, he could co-

exist with other pets. He is a big,

lovable boy but would prefer a house with older children. Hudson is longing for a house where he will be treasured, loved, and given lots of ear scratches.

If you would like to gve this deserving boy the forever home he so deserves, please complete an Anthem Pets Matchmaker Application, available online at www.anthempets.org/adoptionprocess.

Anthem Pets (www.anthempets.org) is a nonprofit animal rescue organization serving lost, found, and abandoned animals in the North Valley since 2005. Operating on donations only, it aims to find forever homes for abandoned animals and return wayward pets to owners. If you’re not in a position to adopt but would still like to help Anthem Pets, please consider making a donation or becoming a pet foster!

We’re looking for forever homes, too! To learn more about us, visit www.anthempets.org.
