President’s Message

Dear APICS Members & Enthusiasts, Join us in April as Kyle Harrison, an ASU Honor student, presents the topic of his thesis:  “ERP in the Cloud”.  This timely topic is of interest as many businesses today are operating in the cloud or considering whether they should and to what extent.  Considerations such as cost, flexibility, and security all come into play.  Today’s executives must weigh each aspect of this decision for their business to determine how to achieve an optimal balance.  It’s a given that your company is assessing the possibility if not actively then as a future consideration.  I look forward to some meaningful discussion on the topic. Additionally this month we will be voting on our 2017-18 Board of Directors in preparation for the upcoming program year starting July 1.  Mike Gahagan, Treasurer, is serving on the Nominating Committee and has been busy identifying potential candidates to be on the voting ballot.  Nominations from the floor will also be accepted.  Please plan to attend this important meeting to cast your vote for the new board members so that we may continue the high quality leadership that Foothills is known for.

In March we received some unfortunate news that the Asheville Chapter has disbanded.  In light of this, some members are joining Foothills.  Ken Donham will be welcoming them to our chapter, and I’d ask you to do the same.  If you have any APICS colleagues or acquaintances from the Asheville area, please let them know that we welcome their participation and membership in our chapter and will include them in our upcoming events and activities.  Also you’ll find a reminder inside this month’s newsletter about the APICS student competition in April that is sure to be engaging.  We hope that some of our ASU or Lees-McRae students decide to participate!

Sincerely, Debbie Boyle, CSCPPresident, Foothills Chapter

April SpeakerKyle Harrison is a top Honor Student in the ASU Computer Information Systems/Supply Change Management Department in the Walker College of Business. He has been nominated for the COB top Honor Student award for the 2016-2017 school year.

His presentation will be on his honor’s thesis about the evolving business trend of ERP system and cloud technology. Included in his presentation will be a summary of his findings from a recent survey of regional business professionals on this topic.

Membership NewsIt is hard to believe that there are only two more PDMs until the summer. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming PDM on April 13th. We are starting April with 137 members. I am pleased to announce 5 new professional members and 3 new student members! No milestone anniversaries this month; however Dr. Crandall is celebrating a 31 year membership anniversary this April. Plant Tour – Transportation Insight

The March 9th education program was a plant tour hosted by Transportation Insight, a world-wide leader in third-party logistics services, with headquarters in downtown Hickory. The tour took place in the newly re-purposed Lyerly Hosiery Mill, a complex of 1930’s mill buildings rehabilitated into a 21st century workspace. The project, costing over $10 million, was recently recognized by the NC Main Street program with the Award of Merit for Best Historic Rehabilitation Project.Paul Thompson, founder and former CEO of Transportation Insight, gave a presentation on the history of the company and the growth of the third-party logistics industry. Later, Thompson personally conducted the plant tour, noting many of the challenges encountered during the construction project. It was clear he took a great deal of personal pride in the project and loved showing it off.Mr. Thompson’s presentation traced the growth of e-commerce and its impact on the retail buying experience. He predicted further growth in that trend, extending to specialized products such as furniture and home appliances. He saw the potential for the growth of small local logistics providers specializing in “last mile” delivery and “white glove” installation and set-up of more complex consumer products. On a more ominous note, Thompson noted the average age of today’s over-the –road truck drivers is 49 years old and the increasing difficulty of attracting young people into that profession. He cited a negative stereotype of OTR drivers and the special lifestyle involved which is not attractive to today’s millennial population. He predicted a potential need for 890,000 drivers by 2024. In addition, new federal regulations requiring electronic driver

logs effective later this year could further impact motor carriers capacity utilization.A wealth of knowledge awaits with every APICS plant tour. Watch the newsletter for tours planned for next year.

APICS Student CompetitionLast month we informed you of an opportunity for students to compete internationally.  The SE District winners will get an all-expense paid trip to the APICS International Conference in San Antonio in October to compete globally!  There is still time to sign up, but you must do so in time to complete all tasks by the end of April.  Read on ASU and Lees-McRae students to learn about the details………………. APICS is sponsoring an international challenge whereby student teams of 4 compete to turn around a failing fruit juice company and improving ROI.  In a high pressure environment the participants must make strategic and tactical decisions to optimize the complete value chain.  The SE District will pay for the winning team to attend the APICS International Conference in San Antonio in October 2017.   The rules are as follows:

Teams consist of 4 students.  Multiple teams can participate.

There will be 1 practice round and 3 live rounds of competition.  The team with the best ROI wins.

Team MUST be all students in October 2017 should the team win.  Hence, no graduating seniors.

The 4 rounds can be run at the team’s

discretion between March 25 and the end of April.

Winning team from SE District goes directly to Global competition in San Antonio with potential for $5000 in total cash prizes.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to meet this challenge, round up 3 of your (smartest) friends and sign up for the competition with your SC Club advisor by March 31.  Check out the video for more……..http://tfcstudentchallenge.org/media/video/
