OVC SID DIRECTORY

NOTES FROM AROUND THE GRIDIRONLet’s Get It Started: The 72nd season of Ohio Valley Conference football will get underway on Thurs-day, August 29 with seven games, while the fi nal two OVC teams will start on Saturday, August 31. The OVC is made up of nine football-playing schools; since its beginning, 15 of the 18 total schools that have played football in the league have claimed at least one championship.

CFB150: This year marks the 150th anniversary of college football which began on November 6, 1869 when Princeton played Rutgers. The commemoration will showcase the rich history and traditions of the sport and its positive impact on lives and communities, while also promoting the opportunity it continues to provide to thousands of student-athletes across all levels of the sport. Follow the cam-paign @CFB150 and take part in the conversation with the hashtag #CFB150.

Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri Ranked in National Polls: Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri are each ranked in the Top 25 to begin the 2019 season. The Gamecocks are No. 6 in both major FCS polls while Southeast Missouri is No. 17 in the STATS poll and No. 18 in the AFCA FCS Coaches poll. JSU has now been ranked in the Top 10 in 71 of the past 74 weeks and ranked in the Top 25 for 75 consecutive weeks. Southeast Missouri fi nished last season ranked in the Top 25 for only the second time ever, and begins this year ranked for only the second time in program history.

JSU's Cooper and Pearson on Walter Payton Award Watch List: Jacksonville State junior quar-terback Zerrick Cooper and senior wide receiver Josh Pearson are two of the initial 25 players named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. The award, sponsored by STATS and fi rst awarded in 1987, is given to the top offensive player in the FCS and has twice been won by an OVC player: Eastern Illinois’ Tony Romo (2002) and Jimmy Garoppolo (2013). The Payton Watch List can undergo revision during the season. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations direc-tors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on the winner following the regular season.

Three OVC Players on Buck Buchanan Award Watch List: Three OVC players have been named to the 2019 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List by STATS. The award is given to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The OVC selections were Jacksonville State senior defensive back Marlon Bridges, Southeast Missouri senior linebacker Zach Hall and East-ern Kentucky senior defensive lineman Aaron Patrick. The watch list will have updates during the season. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on 25 fi nalists following the regular season. The award was fi rst bestowed in 1995 and the fi rst OVC player to win the honor was Jacksonville State's Darius Jackson in 2017. A year ago it became back-to-back OVC winners as SEMO's Hall won the honor. Hall is seeking to become the second two-time winner of the Buck Buchanan Award (Appalachian State linebacker Dexter Coakley in 1995-96).

Sgt. York Trophy Presented by Delta Dental and Farm Bureau Health Plans: This year marks the 13th of the Sgt. York Trophy presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee and Farm Bureau Health Plans. The trophy (founded in 2007 by the Nashville Sports Council and OVC) goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four OVC football-playing schools located in the state of Tennessee (Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin). The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief’s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2nd battalion, 328th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. The trophy goes to the team with the best record against the other schools (in case of a tie there will be co-champions and the actual trophy will be retained by the defending champion if they are involved in the tie or if the defending champion is not involved in the tie it will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy).

NCAA Division I Playoff Information: This season marks the seventh of an expanded 24-team fi eld for the NCAA Division I Football Championship; in 2010 the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff fi eld expanded to 20 teams, up from 16 previously, and in 2013 the fi eld increased to 24 for the fi rst time. The expansion in 2010 to 20 teams was the fi rst since the fi eld grew from 12 to 16 teams in 1997. The 24-team fi eld is comprised of 10 automatic bids and 14 at-large berths. There are eight fi rst round matchups (16 total teams), while eight (8) teams receive a bye into the second round. For the 10th time in 2019, the championship game will be played in Frisco, Texas at Toyota Stadium, a 20,500-seat multi-purpose stadium. The Southland Conference serves as the host of the championship, which will be held on Saturday, January 11.

Recent Playoff Success: Beginning with the 2001 season the OVC went until 2013 without a FCS Playoff victory. But over the past six seasons OVC teams have performed well in the playoffs. In 2013 the OVC placed three teams in the fi eld for the fi rst time and each won at least one game with Eastern Illinois and Jacksonville State advancing to the quarterfi nals (the fi rst time that had happened in the league since 1991). In 2015 Jacksonville State (who during that year became the fi rst OVC team ranked No. 1 in the Top 25 since 1999) won three playoff games to become the fi rst OVC team to advance to the National Championship game since 1982. Along the way JSU set an OVC record for points in a playoff game with 58 against Charleston Southern in the quarterfi nals, and then broke the record a week later in a 62-10 victory over Sam Houston State in the semifi nals. A year ago Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri each won a game in the playoffs.

OVC Game of the Week on ESPN3: For the seventh-straight year the OVC is producing a “Game of the Week” package that will air on ESPN3 this fall. The eight-game schedule is once again in conjunction with Tupelo Raycom. Kevin Ingram, host of “The Wake Up Zone” on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, will handle play-by-play duties while Bob Belvin, on-air talent and contributor at ESPN Clarksville, will provide analysis. The duo has worked together each of the past seven years in the league’s TV package. Sept. 28 - Tennessee Tech at Eastern Illinois, 4 p.m. CT

Three OVC Quarterbacks on CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Watch List: Three OVC quarterbacks are among the 40 players named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Performer of the Year Watch List. The selections were Austin Peay junior Jeremiah Oatsvall, Jacksonville State junior Zerrick Cooper and Southeast Missouri senior Daniel Santaca-terina. The 2019 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy is a 22-inch K-9 optic crystal tower with eight-inch crystal football on top. All FCS players are eligible for the award. The award winner will be announced January 15, 2020.

Two OVC Punters Named to FCS Punter of the Year Watch List: Murray State's Steve Dawson and Southeast Missouri's Jake Reynolds are two of 28 players nationally named to the inaugural FCS Punter of the Year Preseason Watchlist by the Augusta Sports Council. The 2019 season will be the fi rst for the FCS Punter of the Year Award which is presented by the Augusta Sports Council. Based in Augusta, Georgia, the Council is also home to the Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation's top FBS punter each year. The FCS Punter of the Year Preseason Watchlist was chosen based on 2018 All-Americans, 2018 All-Conference selections, and conference nominations. Players were reviewed based on their eligibility and inclusion on their team's 2019 roster.

OVC Teams Against FBS Opponents: OVC teams will play nine total games against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents in 2019. OVC teams are now a combined 35-237-1 all-time against FBS foes, including wins over FBS teams in fi ve of the past seven seasons.

Academic Success: During the past academic year (2018-19) there were 106 OVC football student-athletes who were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for having a 3.25 grade point average or higher. In addition, 10 student-athletes were awarded the OVC Academic Medal of Honor for achieving perfect 4.0 GPAs. The OVC also awards a Team Academic Award for the football program with the highest percentage of players with a 3.25 grade point average or higher; that award went to Murray State for 2018-19.

A Look at the Coaches: Seven of the nine OVC coaches from last season return to their respec-tive teams in 2019. Jacksonville State's John Grass, Tennessee State's Rod Reed and Tennessee Tech's Dewayne Alexander are currently coaching at their alma maters. The longest tenured coach in the league is UT Martin’s Jason Simpson who is in his 14th season with the Skyhawks in 2019. Simpson has 80 overall victories in his career, seventh-most in OVC history (one win away from tying for sixth-place).

Preseason Forecasts: For the sixth-straight year and eighth time in the past 10 years, Jacksonville State has been picked the preseason football favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference for 2019. The Gamecocks, who have won fi ve-straight OVC Championships and 39 of its last 40 OVC games, received 14 of a possible 18 fi rst-place votes in a poll of league head coaches and communications directors. The Gamecocks totaled 126 total points to out-distance Southeast Missouri, who ended the Gamecocks 36-game OVC win streak a season ago and earned an at-large berth into the FCS playoffs, who picked up the other four fi rst-place votes and was tabbed second (115 points). Eastern Kentucky was picked third (98) and followed by Austin Peay (70), Murray State and Tennessee State (61), UT Martin (60), Eastern Illinois (35) and Tennessee Tech (22).

JSU's Cooper, SEMO's Hall Headline Preseason All-OVC Team: Jacksonville State junior quarter-back Zerrick Cooper and Southeast Missouri State senior linebacker Zach Hall were named the 2019 OVC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in a vote of by the league’s head football

coaches and communications directors. Jacksonville State led the way with seven total preseason selections, while Southeast Missouri followed with six picks, Tennessee State had four selections, Eastern Kentucky, Murray State and UT Martin had three apiece, Austin Peay had two picks and East-ern Illinois had one. Returning players who were fi rst-team All-OVC selections last year (15 in total) were automatic selections to the preseason team this year. The squad also included eight players who were second-team picks in 2018. Of the 29 total selections, 26 were seniors and three were juniors.

Instant Replay: For the third-straight year, the OVC will have instant replay for all non-conference and conference home football contests. The league has partnered with DVSport to implement replay which is defi ned by Rule 12 of the NCAA Football Rule Book.

I-AA No More: Although some people may still refer to it as I-AA football, the term that represents the level of Division I football in which the Ohio Valley Conference competes has been long retired. Beginning with the 2006 National Championship game, the term Football Championship Subdivision (or FCS) is to be used. Teams who play at the FCS level can offer a maximum of 63 scholarships (Football Bowl Subdivision teams can offer 85) and compete in a 24-team playoff at the end of the season to determine the national champion.

2019 OVC Football Weekly Release - August 26 • 6

The 2019 season marks the 13th of competition for the Sergeant York Trophy, an award created by the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference. The trophy is contested between the four OVC football-playing schools in the state of Tennessee - Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennes-see Tech and UT Martin - and goes to the team with the best combined record versus those schools in a given year.

The award is co-sponsored by Delta Dental of Ten-nessee and Farm Bureau Health Plans.

In the event of a tie, the award will be shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy.

The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief’s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. where he dedicated his life to improving education and facilitating educational op-portunities for children in the state of Tennessee.

GAME NOTES: A pair of fi rst-year head coaches will begin their collegiate careers on Thursday as Eastern Illinois travels to Chattanooga for the fi rst-ever meeting between the two programs. This is the opening matchup of a home-and-home series between the schools (with the other matchup com-ing in 2022). This marks the 19th time in school history that the Panthers have opened the season on a Thursday night; EIU is 11-7 in those games, including 10-4 against FCS opponents.

SCOUTING EASTERN ILLINOIS: Adam Cushing took over as the 25th head coach in Eastern Illinois history in December after a 15-year stint as an assistant coach at Northwestern. Cushing's team has only two offensive starters back this season, superback James Sheehan and quarterback Johnathan Brantley. Brantley set the EIU and OVC records for consecutive passes thrown without an interception (230) a year ago. He fi nished the season with 2,016 passing yards and 14 touchdowns while Harry Woodbery passed for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns in his time under center. Both should see action this season. Senior Darshon McCullough was a running back as a sophomore, switched to defensive back a year ago and is now back as the Panthers starter to begin this season. On the defensive side of the ball the team is much more experienced, as they return 14 players who started at least one game last season, with six of those starting in eight or more contests. That includes Terrell Greer who was named a Preseason All-OVC selection after making 48 tackles a season ago. Also returning is linebacker Joe Caputo who led the team with 86 stops a year ago, including 7.5 for loss. Junior Dytarious Johnson also fi lls one of the other linebacker spots after he made a team-best 15.0 tackles-for-loss in 2018; he also had a sack, an interception, three quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles. EIU will play three of its fi rst four games away from home this season, with the lone home contest during that stretch coming against nationally-ranked Illinois State.

SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA: Chattanooga is under the direction of new coach Rusty Wright, a 1996 UTC graduate who was a four-year letterwinner for the program and has previously served two stints as an assistant coach with the program. Wright, who has been an assistant coach for over 20 years, spent the past two years at Georgia State, where he coached inside linebackers and special teams and was the team's recruiting coordinator. He was last with the Mocs from 2013-16, when the program won three South-ern Conference titles and made three playoff appearances. Chattanooga is coming off a 6-5 record in 2018 and return nine offensive and six defensive starters. Six UTC players were named to the Preseason All-SoCon team including junior wideout Bryce Nunnelly (112.5 receiving yards/game last year), senior linebacker Marshall Cooper (8.9 tackles/game), junior defensive backs Brandon Dowdell and Jerrell Lawson, senior running back Tyrell Price and junior offensive lineman Cole Strange.

GAME NOTES: Murray State will kick off the season by hosting fi rst-time opponent Pikeville on Thursday night. It is the fi rst matchup between the teams and the third different OVC team that UPIKE has ever played (joining Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech).

SCOUTING PIKEVILLE: UPIKE is coached by former Eastern Kentucky quarterback Allan Holland Jr., who led the Colonels to a pair of OVC Cham-pionships (2007, 2008) and was the OVC Offensive Player of the Year in 2007. He is in his 10th overall season with the Bears and the sixth as the team's head coach (making him the longest tenured coach in the program's history). This season the team has been picked to fi nish sixth in the Mid-South Conference's Bluegrass Division. The team returns All-Conference quarterback Bowen Smith and running back Xondre Willis. Smith passed for 1,726 yards and 17 touchdowns a season ago while Xondre Willis had a team-best 1,074 yards and eight rushing scores in 2018. Also back is Willie McCloud who had 609 rushing yards a year ago.

SCOUTING MURRAY STATE: Murray State fi nished last year 5-3 in OVC play, its fi rst winning Conference record since 2011 and only its third winning OVC mark since 2000. Included in those wins was a 40-38 victory over No. 19 Southeast Missouri on November 10 in which Malik Honeycutt returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown with just three seconds remaining to give the Racers the dramatic win. Honeycutt was one of three Murray State specialists named to the Preseason All-OVC Team, as he was joined by kicker Gabriel Vicente and punter Steve Dawson. Vicente has connected on 29 fi eld goals in two years with the Racers including a pair over 50 yards. Dawson led the OVC and ranked 19th nationally in punting (42.1 yards/punt) a season ago. The Racers do have to replace quarterback Drew Anderson who graduated after passing for 2,840 yards and 20 touchdowns a year ago. Sophomore Preston Rice will get the fi rst look at the position; he completed 6-of-12 passes for 121 yards in limited action last year but did score the team's only touchdown at Kentucky, rushing on a 21-yard keeper late in the game. A year ago 18 different players caught at least one pass.

GAME NOTES: Eastern Kentucky opens the 2019 season by hosting Val-paraiso at Roy Kidd Stadium. It marks the fi fth all-time meeting between the programs and fi rst since the 2015 season. That meeting between the teams also opened that season and saw EKU roll to a 52-10 victory. In that game a trio of Colonel quarterbacks combined to go 24-of-37 for 283 yards and two touchdowns while the team rushed for 127 yards, while holding Valpo to only 38 yards on the ground. A victory on Thursday night would give the Colonels a fi ve-game overall winning streak (dating back to last season), which would be the longest winning streak for the program since 2014. EKU is 224-57-1 all-time at Roy Kidd Stadium.

SCOUTING VALPARAISO: Valparaiso, a member of the Pioneer Football League, enters the fi rst year under head coach Landon Fox, who spent the past 11 years as the defensive coordinator at the University of Dayton. During that time he helped the Flyers to an 86-36 record, three Pioneer League titles and a 2015 playoff berth. The two programs played in 1947, 1965 and 1966 with the Demons winning the bookend games, includ-ing 26-7 in October 1966 in Natchitoches. This marks the 91st season of football for UT Martin and 28th as a Division I program. The Skyhawks are 4-9 in season openers under head coach Jason Simpson.

Simpson enters the season with 80 career victories, the seventh-most in OVC history. GAME NOTES: Regional rivals meet for the 87th time on Thursday night. The long-standing rivalry took on an added twist last year when it was branded the "War for the Wheel" with the winner taking home an authentic ship's wheel to display on campus (when the series fi rst began in 1909, the teams use to cross the Mississippi River by boat; one year the SIU boat sunk and the team had to swim to shore). Last year's meeting saw plenty of excitement as the two teams combined for 92 points and 1,078 yards of total offense as the Redhawks pulled out a 48-44 victory. SEMO running back Marquis Terry set OVC records for rushing yards (311) and all-purpose yards (438) in the game. That win marked just the second for the Redhawks in the past eight games with the Salukis. Southeast Missouri head coach Tom Matukewicz spent seven years (2001-07) as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois. SEMO is 9-19 all-time in season openers in its Division I Era. This year marks the 11th time Southeast Missouri has opened a season on a Thursday at home.

Senior safety Jeremy Chinn was named a Preseason All-American by STATS after netting 55 tackles, nine pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick a season ago.

SCOUTING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI: A season ago Southeast Missouri qualifi ed for the FCS playoffs for only the second time ever and won its fi rst playoff game, topping Stony Brook at home. The Redhawks fi nished the year 9-4 overall and ranked in the Top 25 polls. Southeast begins this season ranked No. 17 in the STATS Top 25 and No. 18 in the AFCA FCS Coaches poll. It marks just the second time in program history the team begins the year ranked (2003 was the other season). Among the team's returning play-ers is senior linebacker Zach Hall who won the Buck Buchanan Award as the National Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. Hall tallied 168 tackles, 12.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, four interceptions, two pass breakups, six quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two blocked kicks and a safety a year ago.
