Hanover is a private, coeducational liberal arts college, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.a.). Founded in 1827, it is the oldest private, four-year college in Indiana.

Location The town of Hanover is located in southeastern Indiana. louisville is 45 miles away, Cincinnati, 70 miles, and Indianapolis, 95 miles.

2011 Hanover College cOaches

Joe austin - head coach

The 2011 season marks Joe austin’s fourth as Hanover’s head football coach. austin, who guided the Panthers to a 12-17 record in his first three years at the helm (7-3 in 2010), earned the reins of Hanover’s program after a successful tenure at the University of Dubuque (Iowa), where he served as offensive coordinator for three seasons.

austin, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, helped guide Dubuque’s squad to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 28 seasons. The Spartans finished 7-3 in 2007 and 6-4 in 2006. During his three seasons at Dubuque, austin’s offensive unit set 33 school records. In 2007, the Spartans averaged 35.2 points and 433.4 offensive yards per game.

Prior to his stint at Dubuque, austin was offensive coordinator at augsburg College (Minn.) for one season and was an offensive assistant coach at Concordia University (Minn.) for four seasons.

During his season at augsburg, austin’s offense set five school records and increased its scoring by more than one touchdown per game. While at Concordia, the golden Bears finished in the top-25 nationally in nCaa Division II in total offense. austin’s unit was sixth nationally in 2003 with 474.6 yards per game and ranked seventh in 2002 with 447.8 yards per outing. Concordia averaged more than 35 points per game and set virtually every school passing, receiving and rushing record during austin’s tenure.

a former small-college athlete, austin played quarterback at St. ambrose University (Iowa) for two seasons. He suffered a broken vertebrae in his back six games into his sophomore season. The injury, which required reconstructive surgery, ended his playing career.

austin earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Concordia in 2001. He received a master’s degree in organizational management from Concordia in 2004.

tom ross assOciate head cOach deFensive cOOrdinatOr

Tom ross is in his fourth season leading Hanover’s defensive unit. ross came to Hanover after serving as the head coach for the Stuttgart Scorpions in the german Football league for two seasons. Under his guidance, the Scorpions posted a 20-6-1 record and led the german league’s Southern Division in total offense, scoring offense, rushing, total defense and scoring defense.

ross also served as Stuttgart’s head coach in 2002 and was the team’s defensive coordinator in 2001. He previously served three stints at augsburg College (Minn.). He was the auggies’ defensive coordinator in 2003 and 2004. He worked as augsburg’s special teams coordinator during the 1998 and 1999 seasons and also from 1983 through 1989. He was the team’s defensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994 and was the program’s offensive coordinator in 1991.

He additionally worked as special teams coordinator at Carleton College (Minn.) in 1997. He was defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at St. olaf College (Minn.) in 1995 and 1996.

ross earned a bachelor’s degree from augsburg in 1991.

Kenneth eboh OFFensive Line

Kenneth eboh is in his fourth season on the Panthers’ sidelines. eboh joined the Panthers’ staff after three seasons as running backs coach at the University of Dubuque (Iowa).

eboh was a two-year starter at northwest Missouri State University and earned all-conference and all-region honors for the Bearcats. He was a member of that program’s 1999 nCaa II national championship squad.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in interactive digital media from northwest Missouri in 2003.

steve Baudendistel secOndary & strength cOach

Steve Baudendistel is in his ninth year as Hanover’s secondary coach. He also oversees the program’s strength and conditioning efforts.

a 2001 Hanover graduate, Baudendistel played receiver for the Panthers from 1997 to 2000. He returned to his alma mater after one season as receivers coach at anderson University.

Jon Wheat LineBacKers

Former Hanover defensive back Jon Wheat is in his third season on the Panthers’ coaching staff. a four-year letterwinner for Hanover’s program, Wheat earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Hanover in 2009.

Mike Foy receivers

Mike Foy has been a member of Hanover’s offensive staff since 1994. During his stint with the Panthers, he has been instrumental in leading the squad to seven conference titles and six berths in the nCaa III national playoffs.

Prior to becoming an assistant with Hanover’s program, Foy was a four-year letterwinner as a blocking back at anderson University. While at anderson, Foy paved the way for two 1,000-yard rushers.

Mike dowell running BacKs

Mike Dowell is in his third season with Hanover’s program. Dowell served as head coach at nearby Madison High School from 2003 to 2006. In addition to his tenure at Madison, he previously worked as the offensive coordinator at Perry Meridian High School (Ind.) for two seasons and was defensive coordinator at Jennings County High School (Ind.) for one season. He also has worked on the offensive staffs at Franklin Central High School (Ind.) and Seeger

High School (Ind.).

Bill griffin KicKers

Bill griffin has been a fixture on the Hanover sidelines for the past 29 seasons. While covering numerous positions for the staff during his tenure, griffin has been a part of eight conference championship squads, including seven national tournament appearances. He has continuously worked with the Panthers’ kicking game since the mid-1980s.

andy Browning deFensive Line

andy Browning is in his first season as a defensive assistant coach with Hanover’s program. He comes to the Panthers’ sidelines after three seasons working with the varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads at St. Xavier High School in louisville, Ky.

In addition, he has gained experience at the University of alabama linemen Camp and the nFl High School Player Development Camp.

skylar duckworth student assistant

Skylar Duckworth, a sophomore from louisville, Ky., has shifted from the Panthers’offensive line to the sidelines as a student-assistant coach.

He was an honorable-mention all-Heartland Conference selection after starting as Hanover’s center during his freshman campaign.

Pete Compise

Wayne Perry

Former head coaches Wayne Perry, Pete Compise and rick Carter helped propel Hanover’s program into national prominence. The trio posted a 243-111-4 record in 36 seasons and guided the Panthers to 14 conference championships and 12 appearances in the national playoffs during that span. Perry capped his career with the most victories in Indiana collegiate football history.

A fter two seasons of recruiting and re-tooling, head coach Joe austin’s third season on the sidelines produced results the Hanover faithful had grown accustomed to through the years. austin’s 2010

squad posted a 7-3 record - the best at the school in seven years.

Hanover finished second in the Heartland Collegiate athletic Conference with a 6-2 mark. Though the Panthers fell one win short of a championship and an nCaa playoff berth, the 2011 edition of the team is confident the group can perform even better than they did a year ago. austin attests, “after watching spring workouts, there is no doubt that we are starting training camp as a better team than we were at the same time last year. We have to play to our potential and stay healthy to succeed, but we like our roster more than ever.”

In 2010, Hanover started the season with an overtime win against 30th-ranked Centre College (Ky.) on the road. a few weeks later, the Panthers started a six-game winning streak. The seven wins in the first nine games of the season were enough to make the annual victory Bell game with Franklin College the de-facto HCaC championship.

according to austin, much of this progress is due to the maturation of the roster. “We had only six seniors last year, so we have a lot of guys that have played. now our first recruiting class will be seniors and we are in a position to have about 20 seniors every year for the foreseeable future. Many of these seniors have been getting playing time since they were freshmen, so we will be a much more experienced team than we have been before.”

With 15 starters and 50 letterwinners returning from 2010, the Panthers enter the new season with heightened expectations. according to austin, the players are placing these expectations on their own backs. “our players are expecting a lot of themselves and from each other,” he explains. “They are planning on having an even better season than last year. I am happy they are ambitious.”

deFenseHanover’s defense took another step forward in 2010. each season under austin, the Panthers have allowed fewer points, total yards and rushing yards. last season, the unit finished 15th in the nation in tackles behind the line of scrimmage. “as our players mature, we are getting better at reading our keys and executing our assignments,” notes austin.

For three years, associate head coach and defensive coordinator Tom ross has made building the defensive line for his 4-3 defense a top priority. “When we started here, our defensive tackles averaged 215 pounds, so we got pushed around a lot. This year, our defensive tackles average about 260 pounds.” states ross.

Senior Matt Sieg (anderson, Ind.) is the most experienced of the returning tackles. an all-conference selection in 2010, Sieg collected 14 tackles and three sacks. “Sieg is the best we have with technique and his size and strength are even better than a year ago,” adds ross.

Sieg will be joined by senior Dylan Bostwick (norwood, ohio), who has played both tackle and end during his first three years. Sophomore Sean Prieto (Miami, Fla.), the largest of the team’s tackles and former tight end, will bolster the interior line. “Prieto is going to do really well. He is comfortable now with what he is doing.”

Senior neil Ploeger (greensburg, Ind), an honorable-mention all-league performer, returns at left defensive end. last year, Ploeger totaled 37 tackles with 3.5 sacks and a touchdown. “Ploeger is our playmaker,” notes austin. “He makes a lot of things happen for us.”

last spring, junior Josh gilb (aurora, Ind.) made the transition from starting outside linebacker to defensive end. “He really understands football,” claims ross. “end is going to be a great fit for his skills.”

Junior andy Dalton (guilford, Ind.) will patrol the middle of Hanover’s defense. a two-time all-conference honoree and all-region selection last year, Dalton has 200 tackles career tackles and four interceptions. “Dalton is just starting to really understand his role and what we are counting on him to do,” states ross. “With the development of our tackles, he could be even more productive this year.”

Sophomore Brandon Foster (Fort Branch, Ind.) and senior Jay neal (Shirley, Ind.) each made starts for Hanover last season. “Foster and neal gained experience last year and both showed progress during spring practices.” In addition, senior Xavier Jackson (Stuart, Fla.) will move from safety to linebacker will be a stalwart for the special team units.

Senior rory Mannering (Walton, Ind.), a three-time all-HCaC performer, will lead the secondary. Mannering has been among the Panthers’ leading tacklers throughout his career and posted 68 tackles with three interceptions last season. “We will be counting on him to have a great senior year,” says austin.

Sophomore Matt McConnell (Buckner, Ky.) and senior Cord Dorsey (Franklin, Ind.) will join Mannering in the defensive backfield. McConnell totaled 48 tackles and two interceptions last season. Dorsey, who saw action at both linebacker and safety last year, added 32 tackles with two interceptions and a sack.

Junior Jason Chisholm (Florence, Ky.) and sophomore Derrick Worden (galveston, Ind.) lead a group pushing for time at cornerback. Chisholm recorded 44 tackles with an interception last season, while Worden netted 15 tackles and two interceptions. “overall, our athleticism at this position will be the best it has been,” claims ross. “So the guys who win the jobs will be good athletes.”

OFFenseIn 2010, Hanover’s offense averaged more than 30 points per game in conference action. Fueling this production was the emergence of a running game to compliment the Panthers’ passing attack. “every year we’ve been able to add about 50 yards per game to our rushing total,” says austin. “as our offensive line continues to develop, our offense will be more balanced. The more balanced we can be, the tougher we will be to defend.”

Unfortunately, illness has made an impact on the Panthers’ offense more than graduation. Daniel Passafiume (louisville, Ky.) and Skylar Duckworth (louisville, Ky.) will miss the 2011 season with health issues.

Passafiume, a nCaa record-holder and Hanover’s career receptions leader, will miss the season due to a battle with mononucleosis. He was a preseason 1st-team all-american selection heading into the season and plans to return in 2012 for his final campaign. Duckworth, an all-HCaC center as a freshman, will join the coaching staff as a student assistant.

on a brighter note, two-time all-league performer C.J. Croft (Fort Campbell, Ky.) is the leader among a trio of talented quarterbacks. “We have three guys that are not only good enough to start, but they are good enough to be all-conference if they had the opportunity,” adds austin.

In 2010, Croft led Hanover with 1,749 yards with 18 touchdowns through the air and 487 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. In his career, Croft has amassed 5,396 yards of total offense and is responsible for 60 touchdowns. “With his experience, I am confident he will smooth some of the rough edges this year and his production will really take off,” says austin.

austin has assigned two other signal-callers to dual roles as quarterbacks and receivers. Sophomore Dexter Britt (louisville, Ky.) saw action in seven games last year. Britt accumulated 101 passing yards with one touchdown and four receptions for 50 yards. He also rushed for 205 yards with a team-best 6.4 average.

“Britt could be our best open-field runner, so we will use him at split end and quarterback to maximize his skills.”

The second dual-position player on the Panthers’ offense is junior Shawn gibson (Indianapolis, Ind.), an all-HCaC wide receiver last season. as a receiver, gibson grabbed 13 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a score. “It does not show in the stats, but gibson is our best perimeter blocker and one of our best overall players.”

Junior Colton Zeck (galveston, Ind) will lead the receiving corps. Zeck caught 14 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns in limited action last season. “Zeck is a talented player with the ball in his hands and we need him now more than ever,” adds austin.

Junior Jacob noger (lexington, Ky.) and senior Chris Cason (Crestview Hills, Ky.) will also be counted on to contribute.

Senior all-conference tight end Matt robinette (otwell, Ind.) returns to help the run and pass game. “robinette is a very good blocker and a big asset in the passing game,” notes austin. He was second on the team a year ago with four touchdown receptions. aiding robinette is senior Kraig eckstein (Sunman, Ind.). “eckstein has a great motor and will help us in various capacities.”

Seniors Jeremy Cook (Batesville, Ind.) and Darren Bailey (Detroit, Mich.) return as the Panthers’ top two running backs from a year ago. “our two returning running backs complimented each other well last year,” states austin. “Having two guys that we can count on is important because it keeps both guys fresh and healthy throughout the game and the year.”

Cook was all-conference after rushing for 479 yards and three touchdowns and hauling in 21 passes for 203 yards and two additional tallies. He also averaged 21.7 yards per kickoff return. “Jeremy is one of our most versatile players,” says austin. Bailey contributed 401 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Senior tackle Matt Money (oakwood, ohio), a pre-season all-american, leads the offensive line. a 1st-team all-HCaC tackle last season, Money is a former defensive lineman and three-year starter. “Money is the anchor of the line,” says austin. “He has a great deal of experience and we like the example he gives our younger linemen.”

Sophomores Joe Sander (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Jacob Porter (Paducah, Ky.) will line up with Money. Sander is slated to be a guard after playing both positions in 2010. Porter is poised to be Money’s bookend. according to austin, “Sander and Porter are ready to have good seasons for us. Their success will mirror our success on offense.”

a collection of returners and newcomers will compete for the center and remaining guard spot. Sophomore r.J. Beitz (Simpsonville, Ky.), who saw action

at defensive end last year, and senior Michael Schlitt (Warsaw, Ind.), who was a spot starter in 2010, lead the competition. “We think that we have the best group of offensive lineman we have had in our four years here,” says austin.

Sophomore Dylan Dunlop (Miami, Fla.) returns as the Panthers’ placekicker. Dunlop made 29-of-37 extra points in his debut season and 5-of-8 field goals. “He is a talented kicker and we know we will be able to count on him when it matters most.”

Zeck, who also plays for Hanover’s baseball team, is slated to take over the punting chores.

President sue deWine Dr. Sue DeWine became the 15th president of Hanover College, July 1, 2007.

as the former provost of Marietta College (ohio), DeWine has extensive experience as an administrator, fund-raiser and communication consultant.

DeWine was a professor at ohio University from 1985 to 2000 in organizational communication and research and consulting. She served as director of the School of Interpersonal Communication from 1988 to 2000. She received an award for scholarship, teaching and leadership and an award for dedication to excellence and acceptance of diversity, vision and forthrightness from the national Communication association.

She has served as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, government, and educational institutions. a well-published author, she has written more than 60 communication-oriented books and articles.

DeWine earned a doctorate in communication and counseling psychology from Indiana University in 1977. She received a master’s in rhetoric and public address from Miami University (ohio) in 1967 and a bachelor’s degree in english and speech education from Miami in 1966.

Lynn hall - athletic director lynn Hall is in her 13th year as Hanover’s director of athletics. Under her leadership, the Hanover’s athletic program has continued to thrive, with both the men’s and women’s programs winning Heartland Collegiate athletic Conference all-sports awards.

a 1982 Hanover graduate, Hall was the head coach for the Panthers’ volleyball program from 1987 to 1998. She was able to build an outstanding volleyball tradition, win three conference championships and be named league coach of the year three times.

She is a past member of the nCaa Division III national volleyball Committee.

In addition to her administrative work with athletics, she also serves as a faculty member in the exercise science department.

The Heartland Collegiate athletic Conference is a union of 10 private small colleges and universities from Indiana, ohio and Kentucky. Formed in 1997, the Heartland Conference is affiliated with the national Collegiate athletic association and participates at the Division III level, which offers no athletic scholarships.

The league currently sponsors men’s championship in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and wrestling. Championships are awarded in nine women’s sports, including: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball.

Five member schools were formerly affiliated with the Indiana Collegiate athletic Conference and three schools were members of the association of Mideast Colleges.

anderson University, Franklin College, Hanover, Manchester College and the rose-Hulman Institute of Technology were each charter members of the ICaC. Bluffton University, Defiance College and the College of Mount St. Joseph were each members of the aMC.

Transylvania University, a former member of the national association of Intercollegiate athletics (naIa), officially joined the Heartland Conference in 2001. earlham College, a former member of the north Coast athletic Conference, joined the HCaC prior to the 2010-11 academic year.
