Into the New Year
I will start this by being reactive and then proactive. First of all, I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving with good food and family fun. Secondly, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. There, I feel better now.
As I write this, my thoughts are consumed with the St. Pete boat show coming up the first weekend in Decem-ber. I know that by the time you read this article, the show will have come and gone, but this is part of my reactive section of the article. As boat shows go, this is not one of the big ones, but it is my favorite. If you have never been to it before, you should consider going next year. The usual people are there selling the usual things, but this boat show also gives us the weekend to enjoy the St. Petersburg waterfront, the St. Pete Christ-mas parade, some old favorite hotels, great choices for dining out, and, of course, camaraderie with our sailing friends. Next year I promise to be more proactive in November and remind you to try it.
The Seven Seas GAM was a great success and lots of fun. We must thank David Keane for his leadership and organization which had all of the ECSA volunteers in place at the right time. That made this one of the best events that they have had in Melbourne in years. Thanks to everyone who participated and represented our club so well.
Now it’s time to be proactive. The awards banquet is approaching quickly so it is time to get your reservations in. The club is initiating its own stimulus program and has absorbed some of the cost of the banquet. It is al-ways a great evening of dining well, having fun, and recognizing achievements. We also install the new Board then and say farewell to those leaving. Mark your calendar -- I hope to see you there.
With the installation of the new Board, we will be looking for volunteers, including some fleet captains, to serve and support the ECSA throughout the upcoming year. In the next Foot, Tack and Clew we will be publishing a list of positions that are still open. Please take some time to review this list, see where you might be able to help, and be sure to let us know.
It’s not too late to make plans to join us at Vero Beach to welcome in the New Year. We have made this trip for several years and it is always a wonderful cruise. There is nothing better than spending a few days on

THOUGHTS FROM
YOUR COMMODORE
John Geraci
Cold Beer
This article is dedicated to Mr. Will Garvey – the man whose perspective has opened up an entirely new vi-sion for me in the area of adult beverages, namely beer. But not just any beer, cold beer!
Going back in time, I was up in Virginia helping Will to add shore power to his runabout. We were in the West Marine store in Kilmarnock shopping for electrical parts to install: shore power plug, shore power wire, battery charger, A/C panel, GFCI electrical outlet, etc. We stopped in front of the refrigerators and there was one that ran off of A/C and another that ran off of both A/C and 12 volts DC. Hmmm, Will was pondering the extra expense when I said those two words to him: “Cold Beer!” That’s all it took. We piled the refrigerator that ran off both power sources into the cart and checked out.
Will is a man of conviction. For those of you who have been to my house, you know that I have a separate small refrigerator that is used to keep my beer cold. Not wine, not soft drinks, but beer. I got the idea from Will, who also has a beer refrigerator that is located right near his dining room table so that the beer doesn’t lose its temperature from the refrigerator to the table — truly a wise man.
I mention this as I am now in the research phase for new refrigeration. My Grunert Passagemaker compres-sor has finally failed to hold a charge. It looks like the compressor was built in the 1940’s as it has that Art Deco, almost Emerald city, look about it, with the round-ed edges and fins. I’m sure that it must have served on some 1950’s Sci-Fi movie (Forbidden Planet, maybe), but after almost 36 years of faithful service, I have to retire the unit. Yes, it was a power hog, pulling down 24 amps as it ran, but it only ran about 3 to 4 times an hour, racking up only about 6 amps per hour off of my battery, which is impressive considering that it was driv-ing two holding plates in my converted ice box on Av-ventura.
I’m now wondering which is better: a unit that drives a small rectangular freezer or holding plates? Owning a boat is a quest for knowledge – we are constantly in search of some kind of information to make a decision to repair or replace something on our boats. So here I sit, pondering the universal problem of cold beer afloat. Of course, Lynda would also like to make ice cubes for

2011 SSCA GAM
Thanks to all our ECSA volunteers for the Melbourne SSCA GAM. The SSCA Director Judi Mkam said our club members were of “tremendous assistance” and she greatly appreciated all our efforts. Over all we made $132.12 for ECSA, based on a 50/50 split of the profits from the galley concession stand.
ECSA also had a vendor table where we promoted our club and made some revenue from selling si-phons. Our volunteers also had the opportunity to at-tend many interesting seminars and round table dis-cussions with many well known cruising experts. I was in awe of all the cruising experience which was represented, and everyone was more than willing to share their knowledge and experience with their col-leagues. Several members also picked up some bar-gains at the nautical flea market on Sunday. A few

Holiday Boat Parade December 17
Dave and Marci Hutson
REVISED START TIME: We will start the party at 1700 rather than 1800 as originally stated. The earli-er start time will allow most people to find our house while it's daylight and to finish eating before the pa-rade starts.
Come by boat – Bring your dink to our dock. We are on the Grand Canal directly east of the cut-through between Tortoise Island and Samson’s Island. You may also tie up to our next door neighbor's dock, north of us, or to Simon's dock, north of our neighbor.
Come by car – We are at 458 Nautilus Dr. in South Waterway at the end of the cul-de-sac. You may park on the street, in our driveway, or in Simon’s driveway (457 Nautilus Dr.)
Please bring a dish to share, your favorite beverage, and lawn chairs. We will provide fine plastic din-nerware, cheap paper napkins, and equally cheap plastic cups.
- Dining at 1730 on the lawn overlooking the canal.
- Boat parade after dinner.
- Holiday sing-along after the parade. Bring your in-struments and your best singing voice.

Pinedaville Review
There was something definitely in the air this Pinedaville – the weather! Despite a windy and some-times rainy day, 76 faithful braved the elements to have a delicious barbeque prepared by Memaw’s, with coleslaw, beans and a large variety of side dishes. The music was provided by Susan Conrad and her sound system, which had dancers up and about while our firebugs stoked a contained fireplace provided by Rob-ert Baird and Cherie “almost Baird”.
The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the new King and Queen of Pinedaville: Joe and Karen Coleman. Watch for them in our general meetings and special appearances throughout the year!
In keeping with the theme of “Gilligan’s Island,” the weather was almost like the verse “the weather started getting rough…”. In spite of the weather, everyone I talked to had a good time.
Participants (in order of appearance) by boat: Joe and Karen Coleman on Alibi, George and Terry Schorn on Serena, Susan and Park Conrad and Rick on LaLeLu, Don and Joanne Theriault on Impulse, Chip and Louise Worster on Chip Ahoy, Bob and Karen Sowden on Banyan, Simon Koumjian and Eileeen Kiesel with Phil and Lois Scalise on Ginny II, John and Lynda Geraci with Nancy Guynn on Avventura, Kenny, Pam and Brandon Windsor with Andy on Imagine, Robert Baird and Cherie Harp on Wanderlust, Burt Pareja and Cristal Wood on Seaventure, Chris and Liz Calder on Spindrift, Tony and Kathy Samilian on Genesis, Kevin and Louise Walters on Serena Rose, Lane Williams and Deborah Kuiken on Zinfandel.
By Car: Jesse and Carmen Camp, Jim (who made a great “skipper”) and Lynde Edwards, Dave and Nancy Keane, Judy and Bob Pavan, Dave and Gail Cordial, Bob Cahall and Vickie Cockman, Amy Pierce, Page and Claudia Proffitt, Bob Wiley, Rob and Trish Zetter-berg, John and Loretta Schnitzius, Tom and Mary Ann O'Shea, Clay Bernichon and Pat O'Brien, James and Dolores Miller with JJ, Doris Jannke, Heidi, Christo-pher, Christopher, Mark, Michael and Heidi Rose Salmon, Karen Williams, Tom and Margie McIlree, “Captain” Kirk and Peg Adams and last but certainly not least, Jennifer Clendinen.

in Vero Beach
Although there is no formal cruise host for this outing, it has become an ECSA tradition to spend the New Year’s weekend at Vero Beach City Marina. Tentative plans call for a potluck dinner at the marina on New Year’s Eve and dinner at the Riverside Café on New Year’s Day.
Call the Marina for reservations (772-231-2819) for a slip or (possibly shared) mooring.
For more information, contact Joe (321-223-6871) or Karen Coleman (321-795-5588).
your boat in a nice place with good friends and no pressure. Be sure to make your reservations at the city marina soon as they tend to fill up quickly.
Last but not least, let’s all make a New Year’s reso-lution to be more active in the club in 2012. We have put together a very active cruising schedule, so I hope that I will see more of you on the water as well as at the monthly meetings throughout the year.

some of her drinks (don’t forget about a Dark and Stormy), and we have the Bahamas trip coming up next year! I’d better sign off and get cracking on that research so I can anchor in Great Guana Cay, watch the sun drop into the crystal turquoise waters and have an ice cold beer.
Cheers, John
