Why are we here? TheEuropeanfoodsectormustundergotransformationstoaddresssuccessfullythecomplexchallengesrelatedtofoodsecurityandtheeconomicsustainabilityofthefoodsector.Historicallythefoodsectorhasnotsucceededinjoiningforcestodeliversolutionstothesechallengessuchas:climatechange;lossofbiodiversityandsoilresources;dependencyonimportedproteins;changingdietaryhabits;themismatch

betweenskillssupplyanddemand;thegeneralmistrustamongstconsumersandauthorities;andthelackofcooperationwiththeagriculturalcommunityandfarmers.
FoodNexusisuniquelypositionedtotakeupthistask,beingabusiness-ledcommunityoftop-levelfoodpartnersacrossEuropeandacrossthefullfoodsystem.
Asanindependentnetworkwestrivetomakethefoodsystemstrongerbysupportingtheapplicationofstate-of-the-artresearchtosolveindustrialandsocietalchallenges.
What is our vision? ThevisionofFoodNexusisatransformedEUfoodsystemthatissustainable,consumer-centred,fullyintegrated,transparent,climate-resilientandresource-efficient,andthus,competitiveglobally.
What is our mission? ThemissionofFoodNexusistoserveasthegame-changingdriveroftransformationintheEUfoodsystemandtocreateandeducatetheleaders,entrepreneurs,talentandinnovators–thepeoplewhodrivethebreakthroughinnovations,developmentandimplementationofconsumer-orientedsolutions.
Which societal challenges do we address? FoodNexusaddressesthreeinterconnectedsocietalchallenges:
Bycollaboratingwithothersystemsintheareasofhealth,bio-refining,bio-basedmaterials,climate,water,energyandICT,FoodNexuswillcreatethenecessaryconditionsfortheEUfoodsystemtomeetsocietalchallenges,tostrengthenitsinternationalcompetitivenessandtocontributetoeconomicgrowthandjobcreation.
Byestablishinganewecosystem,FoodNexusseekstoincreaseconnectivitybetweenalltheactorsintheEUfoodsystemandtointegratenewactorswhocanbringnewbusiness,innovativetechnologiesandtalentintothesystem,makingitthemostcompetitiveintheworld.
What is the story of FoodNexus? FoodNexusisanopencollaborationwithalonghistory.Aftersomeyearsofinitialstart-upwork,theEuropeanconsortiumwasformallyfoundedin2011,underthenameFoodBestbyØresundFoodNetwork,WageningenUniversityandINRA.Theaimwastocreateaworld-leadingcommunityforcollaborationonfoodinnovation,educationandentrepreneurshipabletotransformtheEuropeanfoodsector.Sincethen,ithasenjoyedconsiderablesupportfromawiderangeofleadingEuropeancompanies,universitiesandpublicbodies.

Today,FoodNexusisanopenandparticipatoryorganisation,whosepartnersareinvolvedinthedevelopmentofstrategiesandactivities.Organisations,companiesandinstitutionsfromalloverEuropenowtakeanactivepartinshapingthejointinitiatives.Youcanalwaysfindthefulllistofcurrentmembersonourwebsite.
Thecollaborationiscurrentlyorganisedintoregionalcentres.ThesecoverEurope’sstrongestfoodregions–bothintermsoffoodproductionandtheinternationalrecognitionoftheirfoodtraditionsandintermsofinnovationandexports–aswellasEurope’sinnovationleaders.Eachregionalcentrefunctionsasaregionalnetworkhub,embracingtheregion’spartnersandbeingtheirrepresentativeintheregion.
2. Focus and activities
What do we do? Throughitsactivitiesandimpact,FoodNexusfocusesonbeingrecognisedasthepan-Europeanconsortiumthat,givenitsnatureandcredibilitycreatesanewlevelofcompetitivenessintheEuropeanfoodsectorbytransformingitintoafullyintegratedandconnectedfoodsystem.
Tothisend,theFoodNexuspartnershipwilldevelopactivitiesintheareasof:

Influence the food system - at both an EU and National Level AtFoodNexusVisioningSummits,topindustrydecision-makersfrommember-organisationmeettodiscusswithkeyexpertsanddevelopaninformedviewonwhatthefuturewillbringusandhowweshouldaddressthis.Theoutcomeofthesevisioningsummits,providethecoreoftheunifiedvoiceofFoodNexuswhichisusedtoinfluencerelevantnationalandEuropeanresearchagendas.
TheFoodNexusnetworkisalreadybeingregardedbyEUbodiestobeaneffectiveandefficientagentforimplementingtheirstrategies.Forinstance,wearealignedwithandindialoguewiththeEuropeanCommissionregardingtheFood2030strategy.
Givenourcurrentposition,wewillpushforaflagshipprogrammeoraJointTechnologyInitiative(JTI)relevanttoourconsortium.BeingcloselyinvolvedinsuchanoverarchingEuropeanprogrammeprovidesanenormousopportunityfortappingintofutureinnovationandeducationactivity,includingfundingforcommoninitiatives.
WeensurethatthroughouttherelevantEUbodies,ouragendaandsuggestionsforimprovementsoftheinnovationandeducationframeworksarewellknown,e.g.regardingadjustmentsorfocusoffutureframeworkprogrammes.
Wewillcreatesynergybetweenthevariousinitiativesbylinkingtoregionallevel.
Accelerate innovation FoodNexusprovidesanalysisofmember’sfoodinnovationneeds,capacitiesandcapabilitiesandsuggestsmatchesbetweenpartnersintheconsortiumwithinthethreecommonlydefinedsocietalchallenges.Thetrustwebuildbyworkingtogether,combinedwithourpartneringtoolwillhelpuscombineskillsandthusinnovatefaster.Besides,wewillincreasechancesofapplicationsuccessfromca.8-14%(current)to30%bymaximizingthefit:consortium-program-proposal-impact.
Start-upscanhelpaccelerateinnovation.WethereforehaveinitiatedtheannualFoodNexusStartupChallengetocelebratethebestfoodandagristartupsacrossEurope.Eachyear,primaryroundstakeplacearoundEuropeandthewinnersaregatheredoncetoappointandcelebratethewinnerofthewinners.Alongtheprocessofthisunique,Pan-Europeanagrifoodcontest,corporate-startupcollaborationisnurtured.Readonatfnsc.eu.
Develop talent ThenetworkhoststhebestUniversitiesinFoodandAgroinEurope,whowanttointeractwithindustryinordertomeettheeducationalneedsoftomorrow.TogethertheycancreatethecomprehensiveeducationportfoliorequiredtotransformtheFoodindustry.FoodNexuswantstobuildthebestbrandforFOODcontinuingeducationintheworld.
Who does FoodNexus want to be in the Innovation landscape of the EU? In2017,thevalueofFoodNexusconsortiumhasbeenrecognisedbyEIT,DG-RTD,ETPFood4Life,severalexistingKICs,nationalgovernmentsandothers.FoodNexuswantstoremainakeyplayertoimplementtheEUstrategiesgivenitsbusiness-lednaturewhilecontinuouslyfocusingonvalue-creationforthemembers.
Ournexttarget(2017-2018)istodevelopandpromotethedevelopmentofamissionforFP9.

3. Governance
How is FoodNexus legally organised? FoodNexusisamembershiporganisation.Currently,itscentralsecretariatishostedbyUniversityofCopenhageninDenmark.ThemanagementofFoodNexusisinaprocessofdevelopingtheorganisationtowardsregisteringasanindependent,legalentity,bytheendof2017.
How is the governance of FoodNexus organised? FoodNexusiscurrentlygovernedbytheExecutiveBoard(ExBo).ThreepersonsfromtheExBocomposeaCoreTeam,which,togetherwiththeleaderofthesecretariatexecutestheoperation.ThegovernanceofFoodNexusmaybeopenformodification,giventhatitisdecidedbythemembers.
How is the Executive Board (ExBo) composed? ThecurrentFoodNexusExBoiscomposedofonebusinessandoneacademicrepresentativefromeachoftheformerregionalFoodNexuscentres.ThecompositionoftheFoodNexusExBomayisdecidedbythemembersandwillbeopenformodifications.
How is the secretariat composed? Thesecretariatiscomposedofapprox.3persons,physicallylocatedinCopenhagenandBologna.ThesecretariatinteractswiththeFoodNexusregionalcentrerepresentatives.
What is the budget and cost of FoodNexus? Thebudgetcoversjointactivities,seedmoneyforprojects,secretariatsupportetc.TheUniversityofCopenhagen,whichhoststheadministrationofthenetworkensuresgoodfinancialmanagement.
Thebudgetfor2018isnotyetdecided.Firstestimateis€500000for2018.Theactivitieswillbeadaptedinfunctionofthefundscollectedviathemembershipfees.

How is the fee structured? AnnualmembershipfeeofFoodNexusis5.000Euro.Thisincludestheabovementionedbenefits,butparticipationfeesmayapplytocertainactivitiesandmeetings.
How do I become a member? TojointheFoodNexusnetworkyoumustcontactyourcentreandprovideinformationonyourorganisationandmotivationforjoining.TheFoodNexusboardapprovesofthemembershipandonceyouhavepaidthemembershipfee,youareconsideredfullmemberofFoodNexus.
