WHY THE CHANGE?The need was recognized for a more consistent and accurate testing method between ANSI/ISEA and European safety standards. While these changes do not create parity between the two standards, they do begin to bridge the gap. There are three main reasons the standards are changing:
• The two standards are very different in classification and testing methods, yet both provide a 1-5 ranking scale which causes confusion. • The standards were created prior to advances in PPE technology, and they don’t address current high cut-resistant materials. • The 1-5 scale for both EN388 and ANSI/ISEA 105 includes large gaps between some of the levels (ANSI/ISEA cut level 4 includes 1500-3500 grams of cut resistance), creating the potential for the use of insufficient PPE.
UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGES TO THE ANSI/ISEA 105 AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDThe new ANSI/ISEA 105 standard will now use a 9-level scale (called out as A1-A9) that extends from 0 -6000 grams of cut resistance, which allows for more accurate identification of protection in PPE. The biggest change with this scale is that the current “Cut 4” will be divided into three separate levels, arming safety managers with a greater ability to dial in on the needs of a specific application. The following chart shows the changes:
GUIDE TO NEW ANSI CUT LEVELS

5
Nylon Gloves– Use warm water: 105°F/40°C– Wash with a regular detergent– Tumble dry at low or no heat
Cotton/Polyester Gloves– Use warm water: 105°F/40°C– Wash with a regular detergent– Tumble dry, medium heat
Coated Gloves– Use cold water: 85°F/30°C or less– Use a mild detergent– Tumble dry low or no heat– Bleach is not recommended
OTHER MATERIALS
Washing gloves very often results in significant savings, especially if you are using high quality Dyneema® gloves. Superior will gladly assist you with any questions and provide you with information on laundering.
Contact our customer service department for tips, especially the do’s and don’ts of glove laundering. We will also provide you with information you need to locate the best launderers in your area. Professional glove launderers will know how to wash any type of glove. Here is a rough guideline that may be helpful.
HPPE can be washed, dry-cleaned, and bleached, all without affecting the specific properties of the glove.
However, HPPE does have one limitation: temperature.
It will not withstand temperatures—wet or dry—over 291°F/144°C, so keep this in mind.
– Standard detergents, ammonium, sodium hydroxides, hydrochloric acid, etc., are not known to affect the performances of the Dyneema® or HPPE fiber. This enables you to wash and re-use the gloves many times– Use cold water only: 104°F/40°C or less– Tumble dry low or no heat

PRODUCT TESTING
ASTM CUT TEST Superior has an in-house cut-testing machine that tests according to the ANSI/ISEA standards. We can test any glove in our line - as well as any other gloves you might be using.
PUNCTURE TESTOur lab can test against a modified version of EN388: 1994 standard. A sharp puncture probe is pushed through the palm side of a glove (or back of hand, if preferred) using a machine that measures the force required to puncture the glove. This gives customers in industries like recycling or lumber an important tool for determining which gloves are suitable protection against puncture hazards.
THERMAL TESTHeatOur lab test measures for ASTM F1060-87 levels of conductive heat resistance. Glove material is placed on a hot plate at a selected temperature. A sensor determines how much heat energy is transferred through the glove and this energy is translated into a ‘time-to-pain’ or a ‘time-to-second- degree-burn’ number. This test provides valuable data as to which gloves provide the best insulation against heat in applications like welding, plastic extrusion, and foundries.
ColdA high tech metal hand form is wired with sensors and heated internally to 98.6°F (37°C) to mimic the human hand.
• The test replicates performance of winter gloves under humidity, wind chills, and extreme temperatures (down to -40°F)• Tiny pores on metal hand simulate “sweating” to allow us to control flow of moisture• Extensive testing and rating systems enable us to minimize glove thickness and maximize warmth and dexterity to protect hands against harshest conditions
“On-the-job” testing is expensive, time consuming and rarely accurate due to psychological biases. In answer to these problems, Superior has developed its own In-House Glove Testing Lab. Using state-of-the-art digital testing equipment, we can provide you with objective hard numbers on the abrasion resistance, cut resistance, thermal insulation, impact and puncture resistance data for any glove. We also use this valuable information to design advanced gloves that balance the most effective combination of cut and abrasion resistance for any job.
CONTACT US - We’ll test your gloves for you!
ABRASION TESTWe test according to the ASTM D3389-94 standard for abrasion resistance using the Taber test machine. In this test, gloves spin while two grinding wheels abrade the surface of the glove, during which the number of rotations before wear-through are recorded. The ASTM level is then determined by the number of rotations applied before either the coating is worn through or the first loose thread appears. This test is important for determining which glove will last the longest and provide the highest value.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The chart at right shows the conductive heat resistance of the glove only and does not take into account that some materials will begin to char above these temperatures. We do not recommend using cotton or leather palm gloves above 420°F (215°C) as they will begin to brown and char at that temperature, unless intermittent contact is very short. Some of our gloves perform well above ANSI level 5. If you are dealing with temperatures above that point, please contact us and we can measure the Time to Pain and Time to 2nd Degree Burn at the specific temperature you are dealing with.

CUT-RESISTANT
CUT-RESISTANT / KNIT MATERIALS:HPPE – HPPE is a high-performing synthetic fiber that offers excellent cut resistance in finely-knit gloves. It’s an extremely popular choice amongst customers since it’s cool against the skin and extremely comfortable to wear. Note: HPPE can be bleached. Also, since HPPE has a low melting temperature of 145° C, it is not recommended for high heat conditions.
NYLON – Since nylon is lightweight, non-linting, and non-absorbent, it’s an excellent choice for food-handling and inspection applications.
TENACTIV™ – This lint-free, composite filament fiber yarn is stronger than steel on an equal weight basis. For this reason, gloves from our TenActiv™ series are reliable, durable, and extremely cut-resistant, making them a great choice for the food processing industry.
WHAT IS THT?Introducing the most revolutionary change to knit gloves since we learned to count to 5: a glove that’s shaped like a human hand.
True Hand Technology, THT™ from Superior is the first knit glove that’s actually designed to fit your hand perfectly. The greater comfort and wear of a knit glove is now available with improved fit and dexterity.
How? It’s simple really, every other string knit glove is shaped the same way. Unfortunately none of them are shaped like a human hand. THT™ changes this by creating a glove where the crotch of the baby finger is lower, the same as your hand.
1. Strength: Examples of high-strength yarns would be TenActiv™ or HPPE.
2. Hardness (dulling): An example of hard yarn would be stainless steel, which is often a primary component in composite yarns.
3. Lubricity (slickness): slippery yarns such as HPPE or TenActiv™ allow a blade to slide over their surface without cutting through.4. Rolling action (knit construction): Most knit gloves allow the individual yarns to ‘roll’ as a sharp edge slides over them, producing somewhat of a ball-bearing effect. The edge slides across without cutting through the material.
ENGINEERED (COMPOSITE) YARNSEngineered composite yarns are yarns made with two or more components (i.e., HPPE and steel). These yarns have allowed glove manufacturers to make gloves with higher levels of cut resistance, without sacrificing comfort or dexterity, than with high-strength fibers, such as TenActiv™ or HPPE alone.
Without With
Typically, the more of these factors that can be engineered into a yarn, the more cut resistant it will be. For example, anengineered yarn may consist of ultra high molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) such as TenActiv™, which is both highstrength and slick; and stainless steel, which is hard, and then knit in to a seamless glove, which provides ‘rolling’.Taken together, these characteristics result in a material that is far more cut resistant than a material made with only onecomponent. Engineered yarns are typically used in applications requiring higher levels of cut resistance, such as cleaningequipment with sharp components, trimming, chopping, anywhere that a cut hazard is possible.

LATEX, NITRILE, AND VINYL: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?LATEX – Latex is a natural product made from the sap of the hevea brasiliensis tree, which is primarily grown in Southeast Asia. Although disposable gloves made of latex are thought to provide the best fit, many people are allergic to latex. If you fall under this category, we’d recommend that you opt for nitrile or vinyl disposable gloves instead.
Note: To limit the risk of allergic reactions, many of our Canadian-made gloves are now crafted with latex free materials.
NITRILE – Although nitrile has similar characteristics as natural rubber latex, it does not produce the same kind of allergic reactions. While nitrile gloves offer a number of additional advantages (including high flexibility and a good resistance to snags), one shortcoming of nitrile is that it’s typically more expensive than other materials.
VINYL – For those looking for a more economical alternative to nitrile and latex, vinyl is a great choice. Available with and without powder, disposable gloves made of vinyl are great for all food related applications as they resist tearing and are very comfortable to wear. Our vinyl gloves are also CFIA-approved for food handling.
