Challenges of Veterinary Services in Saudi Arabia

• Saudi Arabia imports huge number of live animals and vast amount of foods of animal origin from all parts of the world.

• Each year, during Hajj season the imports of live animals escalate drastically to more that one million Heads in less than3 months.

• There is no national residues monitoring program.• The responsibilities of veterinary services and control of foods

of animal origin are carried out by more than one competent authority.

• Farms are concentrated in one area.

• Increase the capacity of the quarantine services. • Limit the flow of imports of live animals to appointed

Borders’ Entry Points with good quarantine services.• Establish a Regional Rapid alert system for veterinary

services notifications on the rejected shipments or local emerging problems, in collaboration with competent authorities of VS in the Region.– SFDA is in the process of establishing a program for monitoring

and surveillance of residues of veterinary drugs and hormones inMeat (imported and locally produced)

• Establishment of modern Slaughterhouses in Makkah and Mena to facilitate the slaughtering activities of huge number of animals scarified during the 4 days of Hajj.

Solutions

The government of Saudi Arabia established a program to organize the slaughter and distribution of the scarified carcasses to the needy Islamic populations, in collaboration with the Islamic Bank for Development

• Increase the lab capacity to cope with the need.• Improve the personnel knowledge and skills in food

safety.
