    In every type design the basic character is determined by the uniform design characteristics

    of all letters in the alphabet. However, this alone does not determine the standard of the

    typeface and the quality of composition set with it. The appearance is something complex

    which forms itself out of many details, like form, proportion, rhythm etc.

    Font services

    Cosmiquais a text face for a youngergeneration. With its hip and informal

    appearance, Cosmiqua is best suited forlife-style, fashion, or music magazines

    and publications. Its tone of voice isthat of an equal, making it a perfect

    choice for design projects that aim toestablish a more at-ease and almost

    party-like appearance.

    Cosmiqua was designed by Linotypes TypeDirector, Akira Kobayashi. Kobayashi rst drew

    the Italic weights of Cosmiqua, rening his

    favorite lowercase forms (x and y), as well ascreating sublime ball terminals on t he A and N.

    Only later did he move onto the upright, Romanforms. Although Cosmiqua was originally

    conceived for display uses, it is a serviceabletext face as well. The entire family works as

    a system and the italics bring in lively move-ment and a fresh and dynamic appearance.

    Individual characters were based

    on classical concepts. Essential

    Compatil is the first comprehensive type

    system which enables all typographical

    Compatil is designed for financial docu-ments such as annual reports and income

    statements and it has been successfully used

    in a large number of the winners of the annual

    winner in Linotypes Second International Digital

    Design Contest in 1997. Since then, Linotype Ergo

    has proven to be a popular design which prompted

    Linotype and Munch to expand the family with new

    compressed and condensed variants, a total of

    bringing the total number of type styles to twenty three.

    Linotype Ergo has generous proportions and wide open

    Meridien; redrawn and expanded,

    it now harmonizes with several of

    Adrian Frutigers sans serif designs.

    took up the challenge to adapt and

    expand Meridien. It is characterized

    by sharp, but elegant, serifs and no

    straight lines. Where most fonts have

    completely straight strokes, Meridien

    Sebastian Lester, designer of the Soho family,

    took care to ensure that the Soho and Soho

    Gothic designs are in perfect harmony. Each

    and every character was redrawn, resulting in

    a completely new design. Soho Gothic is a more

    understated and more subtle design than Soho.

    In addition, Soho Gothic is spaced and kerned

    as an entirely new design to ensure even typo-

    graphic color at all sizes. According to Lester,

    The typefaces were developed alongside each

    other so that I could consider every aspect of

    each design and be certain that they would

    be absolutely compatible. Lester also drew a

    collection of alternate and semi-slab characters

    to give the design added versatility.

    The result is a type family that will perform

    equally well as the backbone of a global brand

    as it will in an edgy fashion magazine.
