SAFETY FEATURE: ACCESS MANAGEMENT
• Driveways and median openings create conflict points (x’s on the figure)
• Minimizing conflict points improves safety for people walking, bicycling, and driving
30
ALTERNATIVES
We are currently looking at opportunities for left-turn designs.
31
ECONOMIC IMPACTS – ACCESS MANAGEMENT
Federal Highway Administration:
“Installing raised medians often raises seriousconcerns by the business community that localbusinesses that depend upon pass-by traffic. . .willbe adversely affected by medians. Though thereare few studies of the actual impacts of medianson business sales, there are several surveys ofbusiness owner opinions. Surveys conducted inmultiple corridors in Texas, Iowa, and Floridademonstrate that the vast majority of businessowners believe there have been no declinesin sales, with some believing there are actuallyimprovements in business sales. . .One study inTexas indicated that corridors with access controlimprovements experienced an 18 percent increasein property values after construction.”

32
SAFETY FEATURE: LEFT-TURN LANES
• Left-turn lanes improve
traffic flow by removing
turning vehicles from through
lanes
• Left-turn lanes improve
safety by decreasing rear-
end collisions
• IDM requires left-turn
lanes at all median openings
However. . .
• New left-turn lanes do
impact trees and
landscaping

•Commitment to end
traffic deaths and
serious injuries by 2030.
•Traffic deaths and serious
injuries are an
unacceptable
and preventable public
health issue.
