Professor Edward FeigenbaumComputer Science DepartmentElectrical Engineering DepartmentStanford UniversityStanford, California 94304

Dear Professor Feigenbaum:

Enclosed is a quotation for the DECSYSTEM-2050T. The goals of thisquotation were to configure a system that approaches the University'sacademic requirements and to keep within its fiscal limitation.

Digital is currently determining the earliest possible shipping datebased upon a decision by the University to 6 October 1978 and a purchaseorder no later than 13 October 1978. I will call your office immed-iatly upon receiving this information.

In order to meet the full requirements as set forth by Mr. Gorin andProf. Van Cleemput, you will have to expand this configuration to 1megaword and install the 2060-UC upgrade kit. The financial break downfor the expansion is as follows:

$ 50,000.2060-UC uparadeMF2OPA 768KW MOS 250,000.

$ 300,000.(40,000.)

$ 260,000.less trade-in for (4) MB2Omodules

It is a portion of this upgrade package we would like to explore withthe Corporate Contribution Committee thru Jim Bell. We will need aformal research grant proposal from the University before we can pursuethe possibility further.

Please call me if you have any questions. Thank you and your staff forthe opportunity that allows Digital to present this proposal for yourconsideration.

Very truly yours,

ichard S. BruckerSenior Sales Representative

At the meeting of August 14, 1978, the following configuration was identifiedas desirable for the CS/EE Computer Facility:

$982,000 o-nr,rri

We can expect a discount between 20 and 25%, which leaves us a net cost ofbetween $736,000 to $785,000 to which we have to add $80,000 for graphicsequipment.

NSF Computer Equipment Grant

As I have discussed with you on August 3, the Computer Science andElectrical Engineering Departments have jointly received a ComputerEquipment Grant from NSF. Ed Feigenbaum and I are the steering committeein raising funds to match the NSF contribution. Our proposal was fundedfor a Digital Electronics Computer (DEC) System 20 and several majorperipherals. The list price for the proposed system is $700,000 (seeattached) . The machine is to be a joint research tool for Computer Scienceand the Integrated Circuits and Digital Systems Laboratories. U-l

>z■tion_The present state of financial commitments is as follows:

$550,000

This leaves us $150,000 short of the required amount. Ed Feigenbaum willbegin negotiations with DEC concerning a discount, however I anticipatethat we should plan on having at least $75,000 additional funds on hand.It is my hope that given the present all out financial commitment onthe part of CS, EE and the School of Engineering that supplemental Univer-sity funds can be found. I appreciate your help in this matter.

Subject: CIS Computer System

I talked to DEC salespeople today and the first available slot for aDEC 2040 system is in February 1979. Currently, the CS department isstill waiting for funding of their contribution ($200,000).

If this funding does not come through we may consider one of the followingoptions:

1) Use the NSF money for a smaller DEC 2020

2) Purchase part of the system outright and get an installment agree-ment over three years for the rest.

In any case, we should decide on this as soon as possible in order toget our activities in the VLSI design area going. o

-nomFurthermore, we should order the color graphics equipment for IC design

as soon as we can, since this equipment seems to be covered financially.2m2O

>?:c2

Sending a letter of intent to DEC does not commit us at this time sincethey only want a firm purchase order 60 days before actual delivery.

It may be useful to get together the key people from DSL, ICL and CSin order to get this off the ground.
