Staff News

We welcome Mrs Laura Simpkins to the admin team. Laura is based in the Broadwood school office and we hope she will be very happy working at Corsham Primary.

We were delighted to hear that Mrs Becky Lambert gave birth to healthy twin girls on Sunday 29 April. She has named them Mabel Alexandra and Martha Rose. We have been informed that both Mum and babies

are doing well and that Toby is loving being a big brother.

We were also delighted to hear the news that Mr Reuben Elliott has popped the question and become engaged to his partner Emily. We are all looking forward to hearing their future wedding plans.

After twelve years of working at Corsham Primary School in our Early Years Team at Pound Pill Mrs Jane Simons has decided it is time to retire and put her feet up! Jane’s husband recently retired and they are

planning to travel and spend more time with family and friends. We will miss Jane very much; she is a very caring person who has supported so many children over the years and made their first year at school both

happy and memorable.

As you know Mrs Kate Smith returned to school in January after her maternity leave. Kate has now decided to seek employment closer to home as she is finding the commute to and from school just a bit too far and she understandably wants to be nearer to baby Wilf. Kate will therefore be leaving us at the end of

the summer term. We will miss her very much and want to thank her for everything she has done in the last six years to make the children’s time at Corsham Primary a happy one.

Miss Kirsty Robertson has decided to follow her passion for working with children with special educational needs and has secured a teaching position at Springfields Academy. We will be sad to say goodbye to

Kirsty and have enjoyed working with her these past three years. We wish her all the best in her exciting new role and know she will be brilliant.

Miss Ellie Winward will also be leaving us at the end of the summer term. Ellie has decided that commuting to and from Bristol every day is taking too long, she has therefore accepted a teaching position closer to home. We have enjoyed getting to know Ellie this past year and know she will do a fantastic job

in her new school.

Mrs Mel Brewer and her husband are planning to move closer to his place of work and she has therefore secured a teaching position in a school in Bristol. We will be sorry to say goodbye to Mel and want to say

thank you and wish her all the best in her new job and house move.

Another person on the move is Mrs Emma Breen. She and her husband are moving to Bristol so she has decided it is the right time to leave our Teaching Assistant team. She has worked with many children over

the years who have benefited from her calm and fun approach, we will all miss her greatly and wish her good luck with her move.

From September we will be welcoming some new Curriculum Development Group Leaders to the school Leadership Team. Mrs Clare Vines, Mr Roo Elliott and Mrs Hannah Allen were all successful in recent

interviews and we look forward to them taking up their new roles in September.

Following recent interviews we have appointed Miss Ella Ferguson, Mr Geoff Biddall, Miss Jess Waldron and Miss Rosie Napier. All are full of enthusiasm and can’t wait to bring their love of teaching to Corsham

Primary School. Both Ella and Geoff already have experience of Corsham Primary, Jess has recently been teaching in Malmesbury and Rosie in Chippenham. We wish Ella, Geoff, Jess and Rosie all the very

best as they join our teaching team.

Playground Crazes of the Month

June’s crazes are colouring books, Polly Pockets, skipping, dinosaurs and Rubiks cubes.

Craze of the Moment—Fidget Spinners Please ensure that toys and other items are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Code of Dress

Parents and carers, please remember that the only jewellery allowed is small stud earring in

each ear and a single chain with a religious symbol.

No other parts of the body should be pierced.

Extremes of dress, fashion, and hairstyles e.g. mohicans, shaven heads or tramlines, are not allowed. Dyed hair must only be in a natural

colour and for all the hair, not just a part, unless of course children are taking part in an agreed

Mufti Day.

CORSHAM PRIMARY—FACEBOOK GUIDANCE

In line with police governance, we are mindful of the potential pitfalls for children

having a Facebook account. Children under the age of 13 are not legally allowed to log on. As a school, we do spend time sorting

out issues that arise out of social media and would ask parents and carers to please

ensure that children do not use this method of communication.

Sand Tray Intervention Support

We are very excited that we are now able to provide ‘Sand Tray’ intervention support for some children across the school. Mrs Perry and Mrs Smith have just completed their Sand Tray training and are just about to get started on

delivering these sessions.

‘Sand Tray’ is a powerful way of helping children in need of additional support to process relevant issues, situations, and

conditions that may impede their current learning journey.

We are busy collecting a range of

objects to help deliver these sessions. Toy figures and Playmobil characters can be used to represent various aspects of

life that a child may wish to depict through the Sand Tray activity.

If you are about to have a bit of a

Spring clean and are able to donate any of the objects mentioned above, we

would be very grateful. The more choice that we have for the children to use

the better.

Thank you

New Build at Broadwood

We are pleased to let you know that the tender process has been completed and that Wiltshire Council have appointed RIGG Construction to carry out the building works at Broadwood. RIGG Construction are a local company based in Melksham who have experience of working on school projects and understand the complexities of working on a live school site.

We will now start to have meetings with RIGG to agree the final build programme and hopefully they will be on site before the end of term to start

the project. We will let you know about the order of the works and start dates once we have had these confirmed.

DON’T FORGET... CHILDREN’S CHOICE HOME LEARNING

If your child would like more home learning we would like to remind you of our home learning scheme, ‘Children’s Choice’. This initiative runs alongside our current Home Learning policy, in which children have home learning set regularly, aimed at consolidating learning in class (see our policy for details). Children from Year 2 upwards can choose extra home learning activities from the special “Children’s Choice” box in their classroom. You will be able to recognise it because it has a special stamp on the activity sheets. These activities will be appropriate to your child’s year group but may not necessarily link with the learning in class during the week or with the home learning that has been set. Children’s Choice home learning should be marked at home by parents/carers or other family members and can be returned to school to share with others in their class.

Medicines in School

School staff are not able to give non-prescribed or prescribed

medicine to pupils with short term ailments.

If pupils need non-prescribed medicine or prescribed medicine for short

term ailments during the school day, parents/carers are requested to come

in and administer the medication themselves or nominate someone to do

so on their behalf.

School staff can only administer prescribed medication to a pupil if it is for

a life-long condition. In these circumstances, an Individual Health Care

Plan is drawn up in consultation with the school nurse, the school and the

parents/carers.

Request from Snapdragons’ Nursery team of wraparound

care staff:

Please remember if you have made different arrangements for any reason, to let staff at Snapdragons know what

your child is doing after school, especially if involved in sports clubs

of if you are picking up.

Parking Reminder at Broadwood

Please be considerate to our neighbours if driving to school. We continue to recommend

parking at the Community Centre and walking the short distance to school.

Please do not park in the residents car park at the end of Portal Avenue or block any drives or garages. Please do not park on the narrow entry

to the school or on the bend.

Thank you

Whilst we are pleased to support children in school wearing Fit Bits to promote their physical activity levels – we request that they are not synced

to any mobile phones for message alerts, which could cause further

distractions during learning and lesson time.

Thank you.

About the Teeth of Sharks John Ciardi

A thing about a shark is - teeth

One row above, one row beneath.

Now take a close look. Do you find It has another row behind?

Still closer – here, I’ll hold your hat

Has it a third row behind that?

Now look in and…Look out! Oh my, I’ll never know now!

Well, goodbye.

Children competed in a very tight football match

against Queens Crescent Primary. The score ended up 1-0 to Corsham Primary with Eddie K scoring with 5 minutes left. We had 4 girls in our team up against an all-boys side from Queens Crescent. This did not phase the girls at all and they worked tirelessly from

start to finish.

Well done to all the children involved!

MORE SPORTS NEWS Athletics Event

We had a fantastic afternoon in the sunshine at a recent athletics event. Children took part in four events:

Javelin Long jump

Sprint 600 metres

We managed to achieve the longest throw of any school in the Javelin event. A great afternoon was had by all the children!

Years 3 and 4 from both sites had a brilliant afternoon participating in a cricket tournament against other local schools. Each team played 4 matches and scored many 4's and 6's! At the end the results were announced and Pound Pill came in

3rd place and Broadwood came in 1st place! A great result for both sites.

A special mention for Archie Enstone of Broadwood who played fantastically in the first three matches but had to go home just before the final game due to

being unwell. Well done everybody who took part!

Cricket Tournament

To tie in with World Book Day, Peahen ran a 'Create your own Superhero/Supervillain' competition at Springfield Library. There was an age 4–7 and 8–11 category. The winners would then have their character professionally illustrated and designed into a poster.

Grace C designed a SuperEmoji! Her character really stood out as a winner in the 8–11 category. Here is a photo of Grace collecting her prize. The entries are all on display at Springfield Campus if anyone wants to see them.

Inclusion Quality Mark Award

Corsham Primary School has once again been recognised for its outstanding inclusive practice, through the re-awarding of the Inclusion Quality Mark. The IQM is awarded to

schools who demonstrate the highest standard of inclusion; not only for children with special educational needs, but also for the highly able, and for all children for whom we receive Pupil

Premium (those with military parents, those who have free school meals, and our looked after children).

Here are a couple of quotes from the IQM Assessor’s Report:

“The school works hard to ensure that it’s environment sets a standard of high quality which

ensures everyone feels valued.”

“Joint planning, across all three classes in each year group, one class at Broadwood and the others at Pound Pill, ensure that teachers with subject specialisms can guide planning and

delivery across the broad and exciting curriculum. Children are enthused by their learning and they understand the skills they need to make progress.”

New Procedure

Child Protection—use of mobile phones in school

Please may we remind you that any visitors to the school must ensure their mobile phones are switched off at all times and kept out of sight.

Parents and carers are welcome to take videos and pictures at their individual

child’s events as long as these images remain private and are not shared publicly.

Thank you.

Reduce Recycle Reuse As you will be aware we recycle paper, card and plastic at Corsham Primary. We are also working hard to improve our use of plastic in school as we recognise our responsibilities to help reduce the amount of unwanted plastic rubbish on the land and in the sea. This term we have introduced three new initiatives with the children. 1. We are now a pen collection point for the community with Terracycle. Thank you to Isla in Year 1 for introducing us to this service. The pens are recycled into plastic furniture and other items. To recycle your pens please drop them in the box in either school office foyer 2. Hampshire Catering, having received a very persuasive letter from Archie in Year 4, have

reduced their usage of single use plastics and plastic cups for jelly and other deserts, and will continue to consider where plastic use can be reduced/removed from the kitchen. Thank you Archie and Hampshire Catering.

3. After investigations in Year 5 regarding the plastic island in the Pacific ocean the children have

requested that we all think about our use of single use plastics such as cling film, one use bottles, plastic cutlery, straws and cotton buds. We are determined to be more mindful when purchasing food and drink and where possible use reusable cups, bottles and packaging.

We are proud that our children feel so passionate about this subject and hope that you will support us in our awareness and subsequent actions on helping to reduce the amount of plastic waste seen and used in school.
