Welfare (AIHW) reports one woman a week is killed by a current or former partner; and one man a month is killed due to domestic and family violence. Purple is chosen as it is associated worldwide with the Domestic Violence awareness movement. The Merredin Branch of the Wheatbelt Youth Council is painting the bench situated at the intersection of Barrack and Bates Streets in the centre of Merredin (outside the visitor centre).
