Folk Arts Training Centre

Folk Arts Training Centre has been established with the funding of USAID and UNDP through UNOPS. The centre is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of HASDER Folk Arts Foundation. Registered by the Registrar of Partnerships office registration number TU04103. The aim of the institute is not only to produce, display and sell hand crafts using colors, patterns and motifs authentic to Cyprus, but also to give courses in handcrafts to revive this part of the Cyprus culture.

Hand-made furniture and boxes, hand waived clothes, traditional costumes and baskets that occupy a unique place among traditional handcrafts are produced using traditional methods of Cyprus.

The institute is located in the historical site of Nicosia, Walled City, next to the Selimiye (Agia Sophia) Mosque and the restored building hosting the institute displays the beautiful characteristics of traditional British architecture. The institute has workshops and a showroom where handcrafts are produced and displayed.

The organization is administrated by volunteers and within the body there are 11 professional personnel together with 60 housewives coming from rural settlements. With the aim of revitalizing handcrafting, vocational training courses have been given to approximately 800 people in the last ten years.

Folk Arts Training Centre has attracted the attention of mass public, being a non-profit civil society organization which has succeeded to be economically self-sufficient since 2000. The Folk Arts Training Centre is known as an organization that seeks to revive traditional handcrafting; a field that possesses importance and necessity for the island.

AWARDS•Umbrella organization HASDER, as Folk Arts Foundation has won a lot of awards, both domestic and international. BI-COMMUNAL ACTIVITIESJoint "Green Consumer Project" of HASDER Youth Club

and Soma Akriton started with the campfire event on 22nd of November 2003, calling for a solution that will bring freedom, unity and peace to the island.

Young people from both sides of Cyprus lit the fire of peace, as a sign of their demand of removal of all barriers from Cyprus. Teenagers demonstrated an excellent cooperation and performance. A slide show about Cypriot history was performed as well as humours, sketches, dances and songs.

Cycling for peaceYoung people from HASDER Youth Club and Soma Akriton organized a cycling day called "Cycling for peace" on 6th of March 2004. Participants called for solution of the Cyprus problem, peace and freedom for the island by cycling in both parts of Nicosia.

They distributed leaflets with the title "Give peace a chance!" to spread their message to the people. The large interest of the media in the cycling event made it a success for the organizers. Cyclers had a chance to spread their message even more wider and increase their voices for the solution of Cyprus problem and peace in the island.

Youth Club visits shopping centres with Soma Akriton.

A group of young people from both sides of Cyprus visited 3 different supermarkets in each side within the frame of the "Green Consumer Project" on 29th of November 2003. They made observations and inspections about environment friendliness of the products (such as what was the product made of, how was it produced and how is it packaged).

A workshop was organized on 3rd of January 2004 in the southern side and two experts (Micheal Loizides and Xenia Loizidou) from AKTI presented the results of questionnaires to the young people from both organizations.

The presentation by AKTI stressed the the importance of the questionnaire to the participants. Moreover, they learned whether a product is environmental friendly and if the label on the product gives sufficient information to consumers. This activity was important in the sense that young people interactively took a part in the training process

“How did we become enemies?” workshop held.

A group of teenagers from HASDER Youth Club and Soma Akriton had a workshop about Cyprus issue on 6th of February 2004 Ledra Palace Hotel Conference Hall.

In this discussion, young people had an opportunity to hear about each others' ideas. At the end of their discussion, youngsters from both club agreed on a common idea that they want to live in a reunited island.

They investigated the subject "Why Turkish and Greek Cypriots became enemies?" and prepared presentations about it. Each side tackled the Cyprus problem in a historical perspective. They tried to present their own perspectives regarding the roots of the Cyprus problem and the future of Cyprus.

To promote the handcrafts a bi-comunal competition organized . From both communities hundreds of producers attend to the competition .

Nicosia Youth Days is organized by HASDER Youth Division as a Bi-communal event and financed by UNDP-ACT. It is an annual organization created to celebrate the "International Youth Day", which falls on August 12th.

Earthdance Nicosia 2009 and

Earthdance Nicosia 2010

The world's biggest synchronized dance and music event Earthdance and its Cyprus leg was organized by HASDER and Soma Akriton with UNDP-ACT financing. The event, which was held at the Selimiye Square, showcased 19 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot dance and music performances. The event was synchronized with more than 200 cities in 50 countries and ended at 2am, where 200 centers chanted the "peace prayer", which calls all the nations regardless of religion or race to unite in peace.

Folklore Camp Living Together 2-11 July 2009 Loutraki Pella – Greece

The participants of the youth camp will include 40 Turkish Cypriots and 30 Greeks and will receive training on both of the countries’ folklore and folk dancing. The camp will provide training in the area of conflict resolution, which will provide awareness and contribute to a regional peace in the long-term.
