Folding ShapesIntroduction

•  A4 coloured paper can be folded to make many 2 D shapes withno measuring or cutting

• Follow the diagrams

• See if you can make the shapes, create designs and solve puzzles• Try these folds with big A3 and smaller A5 paper

What can you tell me about thisspecial quadrilateral?

Look at the sides and angles . . .

What about lines of symmetry?

Will it tessellate?

What shapes can you make with1, 2, 3, or more of these kites?

or more of these shapes?•

Compare it to the kite – how are theythe same, how are they different?

8 of these kites willmake a regular

octagon.

What other designs can you

make?

• What can you tell me about thisspecial triangle?

• Look at the sides and angles . . .

• What about lines of symmetry?

• Fold it in half and investigate thenew shape.

• Will it tessellate?

• What shapes can you make with1, 2, 3, or more of these shapes?

Make a square with 4 right isosceles triangles

What can you tell me about thisshape?

Look at the sides and angles . . .

What about lines of symmetry?

Can you fold it in interestingways?

What shapes can you make with

1, 2, 3, or more of these shapes?(The ‘omino’ activities are sointeresting especially the ‘net of acube’)

Omino Family

• 2 squares = dominoes

• 3 squares = triominoes

• 4 squares = tetrominoes

• 5 squares = pentominoes

(12 shapes can be formed and some can fold

to make the net of a lidless box)• 6 squares = hexominoes

(35 shapes can be found but only 11 will foldto make the net of a cube)

Investigate all the ominoes –

Lines of symmetry

Will they tessellate

Same area – different perimeters

Explain what ‘parallel’ means.

Try different ways to make the net of atriangular pyramid or tetrahedron with4 equilateral triangles.Extension – try the net of anoctahedron

What about lines of symmetry?

Will it tessellate with other shapes?

What shapes can you make with 1, 2,3, or more of these shapes?

All the Shapes

How many more shapes can you make?

Try folding all the shapes in half

 joining some different shapes

overlapping the shapes

using larger paper A3 using smaller paper A5, A6 etc

(Record your investigations and havefun!)
